For the record, the reason the guy who ran the café in part two looked so familiar is because it's the same actor who played Geoffrey in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Also, the story you were thinking of where the Doctor lands on Skaro and destroys the Emperor Dalek was The Evil of the Daleks featuring the Second Doctor.

Remembrance is an absolute banger. It efficiently introduces all the main players without lofty exposition dumps or needless pandering, and gets right to the meat of the matter through good pacing and snappy dialogue without feeling rushed. It features the most iconic villains via a fun action romp - and makes them feel very threatening (including great cliffhangers, explosions, the revised 'extermination effect', and more). The Doctor is paired with an independent ass-kicker instead of a screaming side-kick, and their teacher/student father/daughter dynamic is very fun. There are moments referenced by modern who, and moments referencing other classics, so many generations of fans might notice Easter eggs and bonuses.
Spliced with good twists, a well-handled surprise cameo, and the beginning of 7th Doctor's transformation from a bumbling goof to dark and devious Machiavellian schemer, there's plenty to enjoy, and it all whizzes past at an enjoyably brisk pace. I still regard that first cliffhanger (stairs) as one of the best in the franchise, and some of the other moments (eg. beating up a Dalek with a baseball bat, blowing up Skaro, the "Special Weapons Dalek", and more) is very iconic and memorable.
Objectively, you can make a very strong case for Rememberance as the best episode of the season, and possibly classic who as a whole - and the best part is, it's not even my favourite story of Sylvester's run. There are at least two that I like just a tad bit more - but at this point, we're erring towards subjectives and potential spoilers, so I'll shush.

    (1) This is where the McCoy era truly begins. After the excess and silliness of S24, new script editor Andrew Cartmel aimed to take the show and especially the character of the Doctor in a much edgier and darker direction. This change in tone and direction is immediately felt here and it's a massive step up from anything in the previous season. This is just a really great story that is very action packed and exciting to watch, but also has a lot of thematic depth and explores the Doctor's character in a very intriguing way.
I love the way it explores themes of racism and xenophobia and shows how pointless and self-destructive those belief systems are through the two Dalek factions fighting and destroying one another. The implication is that if those two factions joined forces, they'd be a lot stronger and could possibly defeat the Doctor, but their inability to put their differences aside is their undoing and the Doctor cleverly exploits this fact. I also love how, with this story being set in the early 60s, this story shows that there were still people around that were sympathetic to Hitler in the aftermath of WW2 (neo-nazis essentially) and the Daleks are using them for their own gain. Ace has a little flirtation with Mike, who seems like a perfectly ordinary and nice guy, but he turns out to be working for the Daleks, which is a great way to show that people aren't always what they seem on the surface.

There’s a nice remark about a guy named Bernard, who’s involved with the British Rocket Group. This is a reference to the Quatermass serials, which aired in the 1950s. They are *seriously* good, especially ‘Quatermass & the Pit’, and are well worth watching.

The Daleks (a lot of which were new builds from newly created fibre glass moulds) were fitted with three large balls instead of castors they'd had since 1963 and as a consequence the centre of gravity was off which made them wobble as they moved. :)

There's a joke in this which you probably missed. The UK only switched to decimal currency (100 pence to the pound) in 1971. Therefore Ace, as a teenager from 1987, is confused by the older coins. The kind of thing which makes the adults feel old.
There are some great practical effects in this story. The Dalek flying up the stairs was done by attaching it to metal poles and having the crew lift it up (the orange glow being early CGI). The spaceship landing in the courtyard was done by lowering it with a crane. Not to mention the explosions when the two Dalek factions fight each other. Apparently the police responded to the explosions during filming, believing it to be an IRA terrorist attack, only to discover Daleks emerging from the smoke.

The Coal Hill sign reading Headmaster: Ian Chesterton is from the beginning of the 50th Anniversary story, Day of the Doctor. In Remembrance it reads Headmaster: H. Parson, an in-joke reference to series video editor Hugh Parson.
You're 100% correct about them using a crane to lower the spaceship.
The hasty departure of Eric Saward and the firing of Colin Baker had left the show scrambling to find replacements for season 24. With season 25, both Sylvester McCoy and new script editor Andrew Cartmel had had some time to think about what they wanted to do with the character of the Seventh Doctor, which is why you haven't really seen much of the manipulative aspect of this Doctor's nature until now.
Cartmel is (IMO) a much better script editor than Saward and is excellent at characterization, which I feel was Saward's Achilles Heel. This particularly shows itself with Ace and is why she's immediately more interesting than Mel, who, since we don't know how or why she joined the Doctor or really why she left, and since everything we know about her we're told second hand instead of seeing it, is kind of a cypher.
The pyrotechnics used in the final battle between the two Dalek factions were so loud and realistic the London Fire Brigade were called by local residents who thought the IRA had set off a bomb in the area.
The Jamaican cafe worker who looked so familiar to Richard is played by Joseph Marcell, who is perhaps best known for playing the butler, Geoffrey, on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
The Dalek Emperor design with the globe shaped upper half is taken directly from the Dalek comics of the 1960's.

Before SJA, the BBC wanted Russell T Davies to do a spin off exploring the Doctor’s origins but thankfully he turned it down. The reason why Doctor Who itself works, is because we don’t know the character’s definitive origins and we should never know. If everything gets explained, it’s takes away the “Who” part. Don’t get me wrong, it would be fun to explore the Doctor’s life pre-AUC but it would feel like a betrayal to Sydney Newman, Verity Lambert, Waris Hussein and William Hartnell. Before people ramble on about TTC in the replies to my comment, remember: the character’s origins have been contradicted since the beginning. So that just adds another layer to the mystery.

I agree totally with your thoughts on The Timeless Child. It raises a load of questions that can be explored in the series.
What exactly is the Doctor's species? What is his home universe like? Are there any more like him or is he the only one? If there are more, will they be friend or foe? Apart from the Doctor's species, what else exists in that universe and could it be a threat to ours? And why did the Doctor end up in our universe?
I haven't seen the Timeless Child episodes yet so I apologise if any of those questions have already been answered.
In short I think it leaves the series with a lot of potential places to go.

    (2) I also love how, with this story being the first of the 25th anniversary season, it celebrates this fact and has lots of nice callbacks. Coal Hill school is brought back, which is the same school Susan attended and Ian and Barabara worked at. Ace picking up a book on the French revolution from a school desk, the same book Susan read in the very first episode and the references to people thinking the Doctor is an old man with long white hair and that's really interesting. It implies that the hand of omega is something the first Doctor left behind before he left 1963 with Ian, Barbara and Susan and the Doctor is only now getting back to it and is now using it to lure the Daleks into a trap to destroy them.
It's really interesting the way this story shows a more ruthless and manipulative side to the Doctor. He's determined to destroy the Daleks by any means necessary and that's understandable. By this point the Doctor has gone through a lot with them and the Daleks are a scourge to the universe, there's no positive to them being around. However, I like how this story shows all this weighing heavily on the Doctor's shoulders too. The key scene is when the Doctor has the conversation with the guy in the cafe about every decision having a ripple effect and the bigger the ripple, the bigger the consequences. With the benefit of hindsight, it's clear the Doctor knew what he was about to do to the Daleks and he was contemplating whether he was doing the right thing or not. The story ends on a similarly ambiguous note with Ace literally asking the Doctor if they did good and he just replies that time will tell. This has never been confirmed, but many fans believe the Doctor's actions in this story directly led to the Time War, so it's a very interesting way to end the story. I like how this story doesn't glorify the Doctor's actions or paints them as inherently heroic, but more as him believing that it's a necessary evil to fight a greater evil, but it asks the question that is it justifiable and morally right to fight fire with fire? It's fascinating.
Remembrance of the Daleks accomplishes some important things that will shape the show going forward. First of all, it changes the seventh Doctor's character from an impish, bumbling clown to a chess master, who likes to keep his enemies and even his friends in the dark as to his true intentions. He's shown to be quite ruthless and manipulative, and all of this will only get further developed as time goes on. This story also begins this era's political activism and using the platform of Doctor Who to make powerful social commentary and statements. This is one of the best Dalek stories ever and just one of the best stories in general, it's brilliant.

Azmat: My takeaway is that the Doctor *didn’t* destroy Skaro - he gave Davros the opportunity to stop what happened and Davros refused. I believe this was his solution to the “no-win” choice he had in “Genesis.” [Just a thought…] ~ Dad

    • @Mrazmatmahmood
      @Mrazmatmahmood 9 місяців тому +1

@@richardlemin7840 I've always thought the Doctor was using reverse psychology to goad Davros into using the Hand of Omega. I mean, his whole plan was to lure the Daleks to Earth and make sure the "right" Daleks got possession of the Hand. The doctor destroying Skaro here is definitely a follow up to the dilemma he faced in Genesis. In that story it was "Do I have the Right?" and at the end of this the Doctor emphatically answers yes! The seventh Doctor is far more ruthless, manipulative and morally ambiguous than any of the others before him. Almost Machiavellian. This story is only the start, that side of him will get more development as time goes on and we'll see how that affects people around him, like Ace.

Between seasons the script editor, Andrew Cartmel, had a major rethink on what to aim at (he'd socialise with the new writers and the lead actors and they'd share ideas). It helped that he had time to do that which he didn't when working on season 24. McCoy also didn't feel like he'd quite found who his Doctor was (relying on more physical comedy as his default due to his performance background).

3:50 Also dictating the air time. America gets new episodes at Prime time on a Friday, we get them at midnight, thus killing Doctor Who's appeal as "event" TV. Not even 2021, Power of the Doctor was October 2022.
This story is sort of a 25th anniversary special. The one that ACTUALLY aired (and takes place) around the 25th anniversary is Silver Nemesis, but this one is so clearly written to be an homage to the beginning.
This isn't really relevant, but in my first year of university, I got somewhat hooked on rice pudding. So unlimited rice pudding would have appealed to me.
Ben Aaronovitch is a pretty successful author in his own right, outside of Doctor Who. He wrote a young adult fantasy series called Rivers of London. I read the first one as a teen and really enjoyed it.
You joke that the Daleks killed JFK. I learned recently that on the 22nd of November 1963, that is the day that episode 2 of the original Dalek serial was recorded, the first time we properly see them. Coincidence? Perhaps to the untrained eye...
Something I only noticed on a recent re-watch of this is that the Doctor knows where there's a café, and he knows the owner. Suggesting Hartnell must have frequented it in his time on Earth.
I'd just like to point out since you may not have noticed, Ace is 16, but the UK driving age is 17. So her driving isn't something she should probably be able to do.
The actor you said you recognised, the black guy in the café. I've looked him up, and I assume you recognise him as Geoffrey Butler in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I've never watched that, but IMDB says he's in 146 episodes.
Milkmen are still around here. Until they died in 2020 and 2021, my grandparents had milk delivered.
My friend from uni has a McCoy cosplay. He's met Terry Molloy at a convention and done the "UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING" exchange.
Supposedly the BBC wanted a show about the young first Doctor, but RTD thought it was a stupid idea, which is why we got the Sarah Jane Adventures instead.
The Ian reference you're thinking of is in Day of the Doctor, where Ian is one of the Governors. The Governors are basically above the headteacher, the people who run the school.

Remembrance of the Daleks I remember my first time watching it, when I watched it at my next door neighbour’s house on vhs. It was in a Dalek tin set packaged with The Chase and the only two stories outside Tom Baker episodes on vhs my next door neighbour owned. I really love this story and it’s my favourite story from Mcoy’s era. After a campy season 24 it starts to get better. A more manipulated and darker portrayal of 7th Doctor. Ace is great in this story as well, I love that bit when she beats the heck out of that dalek at the school and all the action and explosions this on the edge of my seat. The downside I have in this story for me is the presence of Davros is not properly seen til the end of the story. I’m probably in minority here but I wished Davros had more presences in this story till say like part 3 or all of part 4. As a kid I remember getting worried that Davros wasn’t going to be featured at all and that vhs cover was a lie, thankfully it wasn’t the case.
