The usual positivity is great, but these talks are very valuable too. And even when you gotta get real, you guys seem to handle it with grace...which is something I personally struggle with sometimes.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS PRISCILLA!

Thank you for speaking so openly and honestly. I have the upmost love and respect for your family. Repeated vomiting is so dangerous. Even purposefully vomiting once can lead to the esophagus rupturing in severe cases /: and that scares me. The acid burning and her fingernails scraping up her esophagus.. poor girl. No matter what anyone says you're doing the absolute right thing. I hope this gets better soon! Talking about the hard things is what makes you so real.

Thank you guys so much for getting real about what's going on with Abby and her autism. I was wondering when a vlog like this was going to come because you guys are so positive all the time it didn't show the other side of things. I really appreciate your willingness to be transparent and I think what you're doing as a solution is really awesome. I wish you all the best, and hope Abby gets through the gagging and the screaming part of this journey you guys are on.
    Thanks for everything.

I grew up with a very awesome girl with aspergers ( i may have spelled it wrong. ) And she was literally so incredible. She wore two wendys styled braids every day. As well as she had a fear of growing up. She hated opra and didnt want you to sing her happy birthday. For 14 years we grew up together. And i was always her 2nd best friend. She has benefitted my life in so many ways. She referred to her syndrome as her magical power. We are now 18 amd 19 and i visit her on a weekly basis to watch disney channel. And i pray that it never ends❤

I wonder if Chloraseptic spray for the throat would help her? Like the numbing medicine you give for a cough? Not for all the time but it may be soothing for her every now and then.

This was a wonderful talk, Priscilla and Asa. Thank you. I can sympathize on how difficult it can be to talk of SIBs. I have been emotionally struggling this week with the memories and other various after effects of 13yo son's severe SIBs and aggression toward others on and off over the past 9 years. I really needed to hear how you have dealt with this issue and it's given me a little bit of hope. Like you we have an entire team tracking "data" and we brainstorm regularly to come up with strategies to extinguish these behaviors. In trying to emulate your optimism I see now that we are making progress, albeit slow with some regressions over the past year.

So many positive, respectful comments here. You handled this serious topic with bravery and sensitivity. You did the right thing to address this issue and you preserved your child's dignity while doing so. You have a gift for this, you know? There are people who really needed to hear this. A child can become dehydrated and seriously malnourished if this behavior continues unaddressed. I know not all parents are as vigilant as you are. It takes a whole lot of work to parent any child if the job is to be done well.

My daughter was born with Cornelia De Lange Syndrome. She has a lot of SIB ,she hits herself a lot, and she recently took a piece of a broken CD and cut the entire lower lip away from her jaw. it required stitches and it was just awful. Nicki also gags and has a lot of reflux issues. she throws up at least 3 times a day. part of her syndrome is, is she doesn't feel pain like a "normal" person, which allows her to do a great deal of damage to herself. thank you for sharing this, I really hope things get better for you guys!!

yes, the same here, puberty had added sib on my son, yes, the gagging and pica increased also, so I know how you guys feel.... there are times where I try to ignore it to see if that would do it, but it seems that he just has to do it. Yes, the vomiting comes with the gagging, I am hoping this behaviours will subside....

Again, hard to watch, but so very glad you are letting the world see what life looks like for some of us on this journey!! No sevant for us who paints pictures for millionaires. I really love you guys! My son was diagnosed at age 2, almost 15 yrs ago. We have been throughout the stim ringer. Just when you think one is over, another one shows up. His worst one was "the chin rub". He would rub his chin on his shoulder constantly. Clothes on or off. His chin would bleed, scab over, and bleed again plus the odd head movements. It seemed like forever until we were able to get that one to go away. Our kiddos have bad times but they also have good times. The good times help us parents keep going. I commend you for staying strong and keeping the positive attitude...as much as you can. The days will get better. Stay strong! Love you guys!!!

I only discovered your channel a couple months ago after reading Earlyvention’s newsletter sharing a link to your review of their fabulous product and community program.
    I am hooked!
I am so grateful for your vlogs addressing the hard stuff. While your solution may not be the exact solution my child or my students need, I am taking them in for future reference. Your ideas that are created with experience, care, love and deep understanding of you child. Your family, your attitude and dedication to connecting with others are all truly inspiring- for me both personally and professionally. Thank you, thank you! I’ll be watching and sharing!

I wanted to step outside my 'zone' and post a comment to thank you guys for your honest to life videos, I have two children with ASD on extreme ends of the spectrum, I guess i was lucky that the elder of the two was the easiest, but it has been a godsend to find you at the same time my youngest is being diagnosed. To see a child like Abbie who is so happy with herself (If that makes sense) gives me so much hope. So thank you, thank you, thank you. I truly hope you guys continue to grow and share your story with the world.

Y'all are exceptionally loveable/helpful people. I appreciate the way you guys face an obstacle...even if it requires coming up with a self-made invention to "tackle" the issue. The person who sent the engraved gifts .....I felt like she was speaking for me. I, too, found your videos due to a need for information....a feeling of desperation because it was becoming more and more clear that our 4 yr old grandson was on the spectrum. I pray that y'all never feel worried about others' reactions when contemplating sharing some of the challenges and y'all's ways of handling them. Besides the charming personalities of each and every one of you that is so entertaining...the more serious subjects shared are REALLY helpful to so many that feel alone in these nonstereotypical challenges. You guys DO make everything feel as if whatever has to be faced....it can be done...and done with hope and positivity. I can't find enough words to express how much I appreciate y'all. One more thing..... Priscilla, I'm right there with ya on Christmas, girlfriend...I LOVE everything about it...from the decorations....to the food...and especially the spirit of giving! MERRY CHRISTMAS and Happy Holidays to all you guys!!!

One of the many things that I love
About ya’ll is that you understand that Abbie has bad days or is in a “mood.” As “typicals” we have bad days too! Everyone does. Maybe Ab’s days are more extreme but I just love how you’re understanding as to her “moodie days.” I don’t have anyone with autism in my family but i volunteer with kids/adults with autism or other disorders. Thank you for being so real. The word restraint As for me and my house, we use restarainnts for is a hard word for any parent to say but truth be told all parents use restraints even parents of neurotypical children. Parental controls on computers are restraints. Curfews are restraints. I am a retired OB nurse who experienced first hand children in their early teens coming into have babies. What always amazed me was the amount of friends with her that were out after midnight or longer on a school night. Thank you for being the parent who honestly cares and digs in when the tough gets going.

We have been dealing with a behavior for 17 years, now. We've tried everything and nothing sticks. I'm convinced we'll never know what's causing it. Just when we think maybe, just maybe it's over it rears its ugly head again! I believe when our kids act out they are suffering in some way. It's so frustrating and heartbreaking. I hope you guys can get the gagging eradicated and Abby feels better soon.

I work with developmentally disabled adults who have various sibs. One method used with our population is a pair of mittens (which is a long long process just to get approved, requires documentation, recommendations from physicians and psychologists, court approval, etc.) They kind of look like boxing gloves but they prevent individuals from making themselves throw up or from hitting themselves. And everytime they are used we document what led up to the behaviors, what interventions we attempted prior, etc. I never realized this was an issue until I started working in this field. I never realized how tough outside criticism was until I took my guys out in public and people stare and question why it is they have their hands covered. They assume it's abusive when in reality it's done for their own safety. I'm an advocate for the individuals I care for and watching your videos teaches me how to do my job more effectively when it comes to discussing these things.

19:20 Awww. I’m crying now. You guys are great. What a great letter. You are a great example of how no family or loved one is every the same as the next. No matter the difference, we should still love and care for them.

Also the talk that you guys had about Abbie and the restraints was super informative and helped a lot with understanding people with autism more. Would love more detailed autism centered talks that discuss the downfalls and solutions. The sweater is an brilliant idea.

Thanks for uploading these videos. We're another family that really appreciate the information and experiences you share. It shows us what to look out for as your 4yo grows and gives us some ideas of how to handle it if it should come up. With this gagging thing, our little guy doesn't do it, but it is good to know that it is something that might happen and to know what to do if it does. I just find it very comforting knowing there are people out there who have walked down this road and are still walking down this road.
    Your positive attitude is inspiring.
Good luck with the current challenges.

Ya'll have seriously just given me so many ideas. I have wanted to ask ya'll about stuff like this, but I didn't want to be the "Debbie downer" of the group. I do wish ya'll could do some of these types of videos of like, how do you handle the huge tantrums at home and in public. I mean in a way that won't take away Abbie's dignity. But ya'll do such wonderful videos. We all see your families love. We know how amazing you are. I for one would like to see some of the other side too. Thank you for this video :) . #LoveAbbie

She is amazing in abstract!!! Many think by looking at it that it's easy although it may seem that way by glance it's quite the contrary. I can see why she got 1st place!! You should if u haven't already get her doing more because if she's pulling off these pieces at her age i couldn't even imagine her progression over yrs to come but 1things for sure she'd kick ass at it.

I am dealing with my son biting himself, its really escalated lately. I have a dr appointment tomorrow, but I am nervous to ask about restraints because people respond so harshly. His poor little hands are just wicked bruised up all the time.even though its an older one, this video helped me with some encouragement and some ways to open a dialogue w the doctor.

My son gags himself to try to get out of going to school. He is usually congested when he does it. My son takes a lot of medicine for anxiety.
Currently we are dealing with bullying at school and I'm waiting to find out what the school is going to do about it.

Thank you for sharing the arm restraint Abbie uses to keep herself safe when she gags. I worked with a student with Lesch Nyhan Syndrome who actually bit the tip of his finger off during self-injurious behavior. This PVC-lined sweatshirt would have worked well for him. Please know that your interventions sometimes apply for people with Autism and other diagnosis as well.
