  • Today, we're sitting down with Catie VanDamme, contributor to the Federalist. She discusses her experiences with ob-gyn doctors who pushed IVF as the only way to get pregnant due to her diagnosed endometriosis and reveals how one of her doctors even questioned if she really wanted to be a mother at all, leaving her in tears. She also reveals what helped her conceive - charting her cycle with NaProTECHNOLOGY, a holistic and natural method that worked with her body. We give some encouragement for women who might be struggling with infertility and explain God's role in it all.

Was diagnosed at 24. Married at 25. Told by a fertility dr that chances of pregancy even through ivf would be futile. A month after that devastating appointment, we found out I was pregnant. Had my first baby at 28, second baby at 29, no interventions either. Had my left ovary removed at 30 because it had been taken over by cysts and endometrial tissue. Was told how lucky i was to have the 2 because conceiving a third time would be very difficult due to my medical history. Had my third at 32. Praise God!

My husband went through 3 years of chemotherapy for leukemia and after we were told we had about a 1% chance of getting pregnant naturally. Even though we both wanted kids so badly, it was our dream, with the power of the Holy Spirit, we were able to make peace with a (biological) childless future. We knew IVF does not honor God or his plan and design for sex and making a family. 3 years later, we got pregnant with our oldest. Now I am pregnant with #3. Doctors are NOT God and can NOT predict the future. It’s so important for Christian women to keep telling women IVF is not the way. Give your life to God and his timing. Pray for God to give you peace that pregnancy may never happen. You do NOT need to have children to be a valued Christian wife or woman. God loves you no matter your womb.

I was told I’d probably never conceive naturally by 2 different providers. I had PCOS. Yes “had.” I was told the syndrome isn’t curable.
I ate Keto for one year while exercising and going to acupuncture.
I ended up getting a normal period for the first time in my life, and 9 regular cycles later I fell pregnant. I had 3 babies in less than 3 years. I have had no pcos symptoms since. Also no extra or large cysts! Completely gone.

Yes there’s a fantastic PCOS channel on UA-cam that is by a PCOS dietitian. Things like inositol, keto, gf/df and spearmint tea, sleeping enough and reducing endocrine disruptors in household products can turn it around. So many doctors are uninformed. I can’t imagine how many women are out there heartbroken and feeling helpless when there is so much they could do!

I know a woman who had her first baby in her late thirties/early forties through IVF. Per doctor recommendation, she made significant diet changes in order to reduce uterine inflammation and increase the chances of implantation. She learned that healthier foods taste better and didn't go back to packaged foods and commercial desserts. She ended up pregnant again 3 months postpartum. What I would want to ask the doctor is: if you knew my diet was impacting fertility, why did you not give me nutrition and lifestyle counseling BEFORE these "treatments"?

    • @LykaLo
      @LykaLo Місяць тому +5

I agree that diet is extremely important, but unfortunately, doctors have learned that most of the time, patients want quick solutions instead of long-term lifestyle changes. As a European now living in the US, I am shocked at what people eat here and what is considered "food". It's the entire system and mindsets that would need to be changed, so no wonder that "just" IVF is seen as an easier option.

I’m a grandmother now, but when I was young, and had endometriosis, a precious angel who owned a health food store took the time to teach me about nutrition. She coached me and told me by changing my diet , that I could completely get rid of my endometriosis and avoid the surgery my doctor wanted to perform. She was a Christian, too. It seemed surreal , and it was difficult, but I stuck to it and sure enough, by diet alone and the will of God, my endometriosis was GONE!! I hope someone will be encouraged by this. The “ food” we eat in the USA is junk and is making us sick. It’s difficult to eat healthy, but worth it if we want to have health.

Thank you for doing this episode. I was told at 25 by a male gynaecologist that I had PCOS and I would be unable to conceive naturally, and I would need his help. He had a terrible bedside manner, and when he went to do a cervical examination, asked if I wanted a female to come and hold my hand while he did so.
Fast forward to present day I’m 32 years old with a healthy one year, and currently pregnant with my second baby after dietary and lifestyle changes. I was able to put PCOS in remission and have conceived naturally and healthy.

The problem with PCOS is not ovulating (or at least not every month). That can be solved quite easily with a shot such as letrozole to trigger ovulation and then conceive naturally. IVF is different and not needed in this case.

      @dianaaugustine5438 Місяць тому +2

@@LykaLoThe meds that are supposed to trigger ovulation in PCOS patients often don’t work in which case IVF is recommended. Even if they do work, women who conceive with pcos are at much higher risk of pregnancy diseases like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia because the underlying issue has not been resolved. Not to mention, they are still at a hugely increased risk of uterine cancer.
Treating with a low carb diet and fasting can resolve pcos in a matter of months allowing natural conception. Doctors won’t tell you that though because it doesn’t make them any money.
I learned about insulin resistance and it’s link to pcos after 10 years of doctors saying there was no hope, just take the drugs. Now my pcos is gone and I’ve carried two healthy full-term pregnancies with no fertility treatments.

PCOS is part genetic and part lifestyle and if people can do the lifestyle things - keto for insulin resistance, inositol, spearmint tea, slow weighted workouts rather than high intensity, sleeping enough, reducing endocrine disruptors in products - you can bring health to your body. Artificially forcing ovulation will not help you long term.

@@jennprescott2757 Oh, I 100% agree. Treating PCOS is complicated. But when it comes to having kids and that alone, it's very much possible to do so without treating PCOS at its core and without resorting to IVF. I have more than one friend who got pregnant multiple times, and each time, it was because they were given an ovulation shot. They still have PCOS, but they also were able to have multiple kids despite having the condition. So it's not true that PCOS prevents women from having kids.

It was surreal to watch this conversation because this woman had very VERY similar experiences to me - I believe our story is very common and not talked about nearly enough. IVF truly IS a cash cow and is being pushed on everyone regardless of their actual fertility situation. I got married at 35, started ttc 6 months later and we got pregnant right away but had a miscarriage at 5 weeks, then another, then another, all very early. I went to an reproductive endocrinologist who told us IVF was probably the best option, but it didn't make any sense - my problem was sustaining the pregnancy, not getting pregnant. I took matters into my own hands and did acupuncture/Chinese herbs, changed my diet, took supplements and was pregnant with a healthy baby less than 2 months later. When I wanted to have my second and third babies, my OBs told me I was SOOOOOO old (39 and 41 respectively) and I should go straight to IVF and not even bother to try on my own. I didn't listen and did try on my own. I had a few early miscarriages each time - when trying for my third baby I finalllllly got fed up and was able to track down a NAPRO doctor (not easy - these doctors are hard to find). My doctor told me I was dealing with inflammation and I needed to eliminate caffeine, dairy and gluten. I did and was pregnant with my third baby the following month at age 41 - it took me less than 6 months to get and stay pregnant at 41, which was half the time it took me at 36! I have counfounded my OBs at each pregnancy and saved us a literal fortune, plus the heartbreak of embryo harvesting and going outside of God's design. Praise God. Don't let any doctor who has too much money to make off of you determine how to care for your fertility.

I’ve really thought about telling our story of “Catholic, traditional, yet childless. And why.”
I want women to know there are other options like this convo points out. And that children are a gift, not a right and not a burden. A gift. And there can be peace and joy in being VEHEMENTLY pro family while being childless. For example, I’m so happy for this lady and that God answered her prayers for her child. Even if it isn’t in the cards for me to be a parent. It was His plan for her and her husband, and that’s beautiful. He has a plan for me too, and that’s okay too. Good, even.

Since there are so many beautiful birth stories on here ill share my second birth story.
My husband and i had been trying to get pregnant with a 2nd baby for over a year. I wasn't ever worried and never even considered going to a dr about it (i dont trust them, for the most part sorry! God is the Great Physician!). One night i was visiting my friend at her church service and it was a very open and relaxing atmosphere. People were playing praise songs quietly for us all to enjoy and it was an open time for anyone to speak a Word from the Lord or read a verse. I was reading the Bible through chronologically at the time and i had read Psalm 105 as my reading that morning. Well, that night someone read that very same passage and i was praying and when i heard that i thought it was amazing but didnt know what to make of it. Then, toward the end they told us to get into small groups and pray together. I only knew my one friend there, and she knew very few people too, but rather than pray with her i felt the need to stand up and ask who had read psalm 105? A pregnant woman raised her hand. I thought how interesting, but went over and told her i think i may be supposed to pray with her. She was with another man, Grover, from the church who knew her well. The 3 of us circled up. It turned out her name was Rachel. I told her we had been trying to get pregnant for over a year and I wasnt worried, but maybe she was supposed to pray for me. Grover immediately warned me that I'd better be sure of what i was asking for, that Rachel had already prayed this prayer for someone else and within the month they were pregnant. I said yes, so we prayed together. It was such a sweet encounter, and i never saw either of them ever again. The church was just a temporary stop for my friend while she lived an hour away from me for a short time. So we never went back to tell them that within a few months i did end up pregnant, and had a little boy the next year. I now understand why Grover said "are you sure this is what you want?" It was the hardest time of my life, but my son is such a gift to me. God provides ❤

My husband and I do not agree with IVF. And that was never an option for us. But once we heard of embryo adoption, our hearts were turned towards trying to get those kids out of frozen orphanages and bring attention to their plight.
We were wary of working with IVF clinics but eventually found one that said it was Christian (no selective abortion recommendations, and we were told that they won’t freeze embryos, which we later found out is not true).
Because I had endometriosis, the IVF doctor insisted that I needed to do a surgery to remove endometriosis before transferring the embryos so that my body wouldn’t create a potentially toxic environment for them. The doctor said there’s a possibility that if a fallopian tube was swollen, he would recommend having it taken out, again to prevent possibly harming the embryos we were adopting.
When I woke up from the surgery, I was told they had to remove both fallopian tubes, but I was never given a full explanation as to how swollen they were.
Long story short, we went through with the embryo adoption. Of the eight embryos we adopted, only three survived to transfer (the rest were too damaged by their previous freezing process and died in the petri). Unfortunately, I ended up miscarrying early.
When we followed up with the IVF doctor, he then made the comment that they frequently deliver babies to women with endometriosis, and that he personally doesn’t think that it’s necessary to remove the fallopian tubes, but the head doctor at his clinic requires it.
I was so sick when I heard that. Why wasn’t I told that before. I have been sterilized by the removal of my fallopian tubes to “protect the embryos” only to be told afterwards that there is debate as to whether that even affects the embryos or not.

My surgeon told me the procedure caused scaring that would probably make it hard for me to get pregnant again or carry a healthy pregnancy. I got pregnant with our third after only two months of trying. Ultrasounds have confirmed the presence of scaring but baby is healthy, growing well and due in 8 weeks! When I was in my 20’s, we tried to get pregnant. After a year, my doc gave me the fertility pill called Clomid. I took one pill and was pregnant immediately (I wonder if the pill even made a difference). It was a difficult pregnancy with pre-eclampsia and hospitalization, but it was successful. Our daughter was born 4 weeks early. A few years later we were ready for a second child so we looked into adoption. We had a friend who had a daughter that wanted to give up her baby for adoption. We met with her and she was struggling to decide between us and another family and I said choose the other family. I’m Pregnant!! Another very risky pregnancy but she was only two weeks early. I was warned another pregnancy could kill me. I didn’t want my two girls being without their mom so I made the hard choice to have a tubal ligation. A few years later we ended up adopting two more babies, both boys. I really feel God brought our 4 children to us. They are now all adults and two are married with children of their own. I never in a million years thought I would be a grandma to six. I wasn’t supposed to ever have children. I’m on dialysis now because of kidney damage from both pregnancies, but it is all worth it. God works miracles. ❤ PS, I take a test tomorrow to see if I can qualify for a kidney transplant. Please pray for me that God’s will be done. (No matter what that is). Thank you!

I was told at 18 that I had endometriosis and a double uterus(didelphic) double cervix…..that most likely I wouldn’t be able to have kids. If I did get pregnant I would most likely miscarry. Or have a very preterm baby. Fast forward, I married at 21 and we started trying and a year went by…nothing. My obgyn did a laparoscopy and lasered out the endometriosis and made sure my tubes were open and not blocked by the endometriosis. Surgery was successful and I started clomid after a few months of taking ovulation tests and finding out that even though I was having periods every month I wasn’t ovulating or I was ovulating too late in the cycle. Took 4 months of clomid and I got pregnant with number 1. Delivered at 37 weeks because of preeclampsia. When she was 9 months we started trying again. After a year on clomid and nothing we did another laparoscopy and kept trying but nothing. Saw a specialist and was told IVF was my only option of getting pregnant again 🙄🤔. I knew I could get pregnant without IVF since I had one already. We decided against it and trusted the Lord. A few weeks after my daughter turned 3 I found out I was pregnant with number 2! carried him to 38 and 6 days. We started trying for number 3 when number 2 was 2 years. Had a couple of early Miscarriages and so we tried clomid again and got pregnant the first month. Fast forward I was told by my current doctor since we had a hard time getting pregnant with the others and took either a long time or having to use clomid not to worry about getting pregnant if I was exclusively BF. I got pregnant 4 months post partum no meds. Exclusively BF. Fast forward I am not carrying number 7 and am due in 4 weeks! no meds with any other kids. I changed my diet ate healthy and exercised. I was always thin so weight wasn’t an issue but I definitely believe how we eat and exercise makes a huge difference. God is good and I’m so blessed to have 6 healthy babies and one more coming soon. Also I only carry to 37 weeks after baby 3 because of the double uterus and there being risk for uterine rupture if I go into labor. Baby number 3 I had a tear in my uterus when the doctor performed my csection. So for safety of baby and I …I deliver at 37. And they are all Csection babies! Myth that you can’t have more than 2/3 csections. Obviously it’s case by case but I have a wonderful obgyn.

I found a NaPro doctor and I’ve been pregnant 5 times but I keep miscarrying 😢 they haven’t been able to find the reason why since my follicles grow to the appropriate size and my low progesterone was addressed. Upon recommendation of my NaPro doctor, I even started to see a reproductive immunologist since my immune system was high and I have two clotting disorders. I underwent two biopsies and surgery to remove polyps. I am losing hope and may consider IVF. It is not my first option but the pain of recurrent miscarriage is difficult 😣 I am well aware that I am not the rule when it comes to NaPro and it might work for others.

Love this video. I'm super passionate about this topic right now as my husband and I experienced two miscarriages last year and are currently 12 weeks pregnant. ❤ We don't have any children yet. We went to an RE and he was very helpful, ruled out some bigger issues like bad AMH (although it did come back low for my age), thyroid (had already started taking a low dose medication for this), and an endometriosis cyst that they decided was worth just watching. He also recommended trying progesterone the next pregnancy. All this gave us way more peace of mind, he also reassured us that we WOULD have our baby.❤ So I'm thankful overall for that experience. However, in the last session with him, he DID say that if we continued to have miscarriages and any attempt to treat the endometriosis cyst with medication didn't work, we could always try IVF. He detailed the process of creating 5 to 10 embryos and seeing which ones would be viable, pretty much mentioned discarding the others. It seemed like IVF was his last resort instead of trying to treat anything naturally. My husband and I knew that was not on the table and kindly moved away from that part of the conversation and didn't go back. In the end, it's been my naturopathic doctor who has helped me continue on the journey. He recommended supplements for egg quality and prescribed the progesterone suppositories. I can't say enough good things about how much hope our ND has given us in the journey. He didn't end at IVF but said there is ALWAYS something more we can try to help the process naturally happen for us. 🙏

i never dealt with doctors much growing up just typical yearly visits so i didn't really have an opinion on it but man i had/am having 3 kids back to back and going to the first ob appointments during covid right after the vaccine coming out and my ob practically trying to shame me and tell me i'm harming my baby everytime i saw her because i refused to get the vaccine and then the care my first son got at hospitals (soooo many pointless painful things he had to go through) then i had two different paediatricians with him and am planning on looking for a different one soon, and also all the stuff i've gone through with my second son (nothing bad but i had a different ob and it's interesting seeing how i'm having two babies and it seems like the information is just dependant on the doctor you're seeing) it is just obvious how they're basically just experimenting on you again and again and again and again. like with my first doctor wanting me to get the covid vaccine probably 3 months after it had been approved and she told me it was 100% safe and effective and i was just thinking in my mind ok but if it isn't are you going to be held liable for trying to force me into getting this? she literally shamed me and was so rude to me everytime she saw me because of it. whether it was because she truly thought i was hurting my child or she needed the information , ok x amount of pregnant women got covid vaccine during 1st trimester and we have a 20% incline in miscarriages. that's how i believe they're getting there information theyre just testing on you and give you some info to get you to take or do whatever and then what your outcomes are in 5 years they will change there recommendations

If it helps encourage you, I think you are making the right decision. I took my ob at her word and got the vaccine in the first trimester like she recommended. It did nothing to protect me from getting covid.
I still got covid twice while pregnant. The second time was at 39 weeks. That same doctor refused to give me in-person care for 2 weeks after a positive test. I came back into the office after 41 weeks for an ultrasound and baby was in terrible shape. No movement, very low fluids, heart-rate decelerations. Apparently covid is linked with placental inflammation and can cause these issues along with still-birth, but getting the stupid vaccine didn’t prevent any of it. Thankfully we were able to get him out safely with an emergency c-section. These doctors don’t really care about us.

I seriously thought IVF started out with the troubleshooting & more detailed testing, like hormones.
And ESPECIALLY progesterone. It's so widely known that hormone sustains pregnancy.
But obviously not as well known to those not in Mom groups or seeking this info.
I only found out about it after hearing other people's stories of miscarriage etc, when in Mom groups after my 1st at 28yo.
Well and maybe a little before, because Arbonne had a progesterone product that was widely used & loved. So it was talked about a little there.
So strange the more natural doctor had to come along to do this BASIC stuff, after 3 other professional fertility docs 🥴

I don’t understand why your doctor told you that you would need to do further testing or whatever after trying for six months. EVERY resource I have ever looked at - online or otherwise - has said that the benchmark for seeking fertility assistance if you’re under 35 is 1 year. Not 6 months. It takes the typical healthy couple an average of 6 months to get pregnant naturally. 4 months is literally no time at all.

I held my mother 5 years ago as she passed. My sister and i were her greatest joy in life. Ivf is a gift of life. I thank God everyday I'm here and my children are as well. I feel bad for all the infertile couples praying to god to magically fix their fertility issues. While many people do get lucky after a long time of trying, a good percentage of these people will not have any children and will wake up when they are out of time looking to try IVF.

I don’t understand why people don’t see IVF as a medical intervention just like anything else. If everything that happens naturally was God’s intent than why go for chemotherapy when you have cancer? Why wear contacts to fix your vision? Maybe God intended for some to die of cancer or for some to have poor sight. Just something i’d like people to think about.
There are certain ethical things that CAN come up with IVF. I don’t deny that. Such as creating excess embryos just for gender selection, selecting embryos based on gender, implanted many embryos with the intent of selective reduction, etc. but often these conservatives miss the mark on what actually needs to be addressed in IVF to make the practice more ethical and just turn to bashing it completely.

    Fertility treatment isn’t linear.

Loved this episode, thank you so much for all you share on this topic!
21:21 Allie talks about the “authority” or the voice that’s louder in your head. I think something that isn’t talked about much is also the pressure that comes from the “motherhood is the highest calling”/motherhood should be your goal, you are wrong if you are married and not trying to have children…. That is a strong voice that I think drowns out the Holy Spirit sometimes too. A feeling like if I don’t do everything I can then I’m not doing my duty. Obviously this is only pertaining to the people who don’t understand what really happens. But doctors and nurses will flat out tell you that they are pro life and it’s not a baby until implantation.

I was told by multiple doctors that our chances of conceiving naturally are very slim (but not impossible) as we both have issues that cannot be addressed. I refused to give in to their recommendation to go for IVF and changed our lives pretty much overnight - diet, supplements, acupuncture, exercise, therapy etc. and after 2 years without any results, (we spent sooo much money, time and energy) and no change in our tests (we are actually very healthy and we both don’t have any chronic conditions and deficits) we came back to the clinic to look at the options.
The Doctors were happy we tried our own natural way and were very sympathetic to our situation. Proceeded with IVF which was a great experience for me personally and got blessed from the first try ❤️ We now have a chance at building a bigger family and never been happier in my entire life.
God bless the doctors! I will be forever grateful for giving us the gift of IVF, a tool for life creation.

I was so tunnel visioned on being a mother and giving my husband a child that I ignored those feelings. I don’t regret my beautiful babies, but now I find my self asking God to forgive me for what I have done and now I have 2 embryos left that were abnormal and still being stored. These posts are all so ignorant- and really based on false information. Your babies would not be created without God... and remember "abnormal embryos " are ones that aren't dividing regularly- which happens all the time in the natural process- people just don't know because often they don't implant or even read as a chemical pregnancy yet. You could always transfer both if you felt like you should- chances of them sticking is probably impossible but if you felt better about that might help with your peace of mind.... ❤

Where the name of a supplement was repeated over and over when I woke up I learned it was a supplement that helped balance hormones mostly in men but some info was found on it doing the same for women. I took this supplement as instructed through prayer and personal revelation for a single cycle and the very next cycle I was pregnant with my child who is now 2. I know God listens to our prayers and I was so grateful that my prayers were answered in the way I had hoped I know sometimes they aren’t always answered how we want but God does listen and answer.
