I knew rolls took over Bentley but had no idea what it did to them! Quite sad for the inventor. Growing up in England in the 70s the idea was a Bentley was for people who had money but couldn’t afford a rolls.
This is a Haunting Question of the Ages: Do Cars and Companies with their unique attributes and trademarks, have a destiny for fulfillment in future time, no matter what happens that seems to contradict that, as in the Fate of Individuals as well as Nations?
To be fair, Rolls-Royce didn't do anything new, hostile and/or silent takeovers have always been around, it's harder to do now as you have to disclose a lot more and there's too much information out there but we see big companies buying up their competition just to shut them down, Amazon has been notorious for doing this, Google too.
@@NorceCodine the Bentley’s were road cars that were so good they were adapted for racing and won. The Mercedes that you mention was a one off, financed by the Nazi Party as a propaganda stunt. It’s like comparing a Bugatti Veyron to Thrust SSc

I for one am delighted to see that after the controversial acquisition of Rolls Royce and Bentley Motors by the Volkswagen group from Germany, and the subsequent sale for a "bargain price" of Rolls Royce to B.M.W., Volkswagen kept the Bentley Marque. They have wisely decided to distance themselves from the one time "sister" company who, had always intentionally overshadowed them and return to Bentley's sporting roots. Even today, one can see the Rolls Royce never built a sports car as Bentley have. Yes, some will say the "Dawn or Wrath" but they are no where near the Continental GT. Bentley have always been the inervaters even when with RR. Just look at the Bentayga Bentley introduced, only for RR to bring out the Cullinan which is no a patch compared to the Bentayga.

It’s a great story. Just sad to see all the British brands have horrible reliability nowadays and lose value so quickly. From jaguar, Land Rover and Bentley to rolls Royce. While I love the jaguar v8 cause there is nothing like driving a v8 jag. The reliability rating is always the lowest.
You left out the part where a woman financed Bentley during the 20's and early 30's . I forget her name ? I've owned an '89 Bentley Turbo R for 5 years now. Sad to say , it's going up for sale when it comes out of hibernation .Buying my dream car , a '75 Rolls Royce SS .
Napier had intended to buy Bentley. Napier was once Rolls Royce's most hated enemy but Napier had stopped making cars after a disastrous model release to focus on their aero engine, the Napier Lion a Broad arrow 12 (John Cobb's Napier Railton land speed record car still exists and gets out every once and a while Lion powered car is still raced today). Napier decided to get back into cars by acquiring Bentley but was thwarted by RR. I am sure WO would have had a better time at Napier. There was a bit of a kerfuffle over the hidden RR purchase, Napier was not best pleased, a number of people have always maintained it was a dirty deed. The vido should have provided information the cars WO designed for other manufacureres including the Lagonda V12. To rub salt into the wound, Montague Napier had a big row with A.J. Rowledge, their then chief engineer who did most of the design work on the Lion, the Cub aero engine, and their cars. In my opinion, he was the greatest aero engine designer of his era in Britain and certainly up there in the world stakes. Rowledge went to Rolls Royce, where he had major input or acted as chief designer on the following aero engines, Condor III, Kestrel, Buzzard, the R (which replaced the Lion in the Schneider Cup races), did preliminary work on the Merlin before he became "unwell". When he returned to the company, he led a small team that designed the Exe X24, a very reliable engine, and RR's only air-cooled aero engine apart from the Pennine which was alarger version of the Exe . Sadly, the Exe was cancelled to allow more resources to be applied to fixing the serious issues with the early Merlin. Oh yes, in his spare time he designed a slew of smaller aero-related components and worked on the RR car chassis, creating a power brake system that was used for many years
Enjoyable - certainly! But the pivotal point about aluminum pistons has almost nothing to do with the weight of the car. Reducing the weight of the parts that move and change direction, thus combating enertia, is what made the difference. The authors lack of understanding and subsequent blunder, which was repeated, is a death blow to the piece.
It all seems that Mr.Bentley had a cursed life too…. Just too many a few setbacks in his life that ultimately left him with nothing in the end…. Another sound proof of the existence of curses in human life.
I never knew the story about Bentley in the 1960s I live in California and had a Bentley it was not an it was not a new Bentley it was used and it was beautiful and I loved it so much but it wasn't made for California Hills and Benedict Canyon. At least I can say I once owned the Bentley. Now I take the bus.
The end story is a bit more complicated that that. When Volkswagen, after purchasing what was the Rolls Royce car company. Were driven to use the 'Bentley' name because they did not happen to own the 'Rolls Royce' branding legally, because the Rolls Royce name had ownership by the Rolls Royce Jet engine factory.
