Well said steve scot the drummer. As you and i know and everyone else who plays in pipe bands know how acurate and precise jim kilpatrick is and the influence he has had in pipe band drumming. And how far he has pushed boundarys in the drumming. And to lead one of the best drum cores in the world is impressive. I listened to shotts tune up in banbridge last week at the british championships and it was very impressive. FMMPB cleaned up. But shotts will allways reamain very favourite.
Has anybody even asked Mr Kilpatrick for an evaluation of this video ? If any of us were half the drummer he is then i am sure we would be finding clips of ourselves here !!!!
i can respect this man immensely and thats only because he does not claim to be the best he just does what he does and isent like all the other drum core snare players who think there the shit because they can do fancy stick tricks and rudiments.
4. This is a fanfare at a concert. Probably towards the end, so I imagine after a couple of hours of accompanying the bagpipes, it was a welcome treat. If you don't care for fanfares or stick tricks, that's fine, but you have to understand that it's only a small fraction of what he does. 5. Joe Morello is a great drummer, and was friends with Alex Duthart, but he isn't a pipe band drummer. I'm quite certain he's friends with Jim as well, so I would ask him what he thinks of Jim's playing.
xpdnc12......QUOTED " the departure from what I might call in my arrogance a departure from the likes of Joe Morello and Alex Duthart." Sir, Jim was brought up in Dutharts corp as were most of the top guys playing in the the top Grade 1 Pipe bands, with a few exceptions. Jim has departed from Duthart,..??? I think if anything he has taken everything he taught to a new level.

Mr Kilpatrick is undoubtedly an AMAZING technical drummer. These disagreements which are being discussed are just a matter of personal taste about what the music is to convey/what is being communicated. I love this style of playing for demonstrating the possiblities of technical skill. Most music which I like to listen to makes me want to get up and shake my ass, but i wouldn't play a cd of this style of drumming for that. There's no denying his talents - he the b****ks!
Doug, pretty dead on.... with regards to the Max Rayne insight. The video I have of Alex with B-Cal at Stone Mountain was taken right before he passed away. I posted so that everyone could enjoy the big man leading now what are some of the big men in the game today. The boys or guys in his corps then are now the leading tips in the best bands in the world. Nuff said. We all know this is just Jim havin a bit o' fun.
hes as good if not even better on a kit, seen jim doing a drum solo on a drum kit many years ago in a group called loving feeling 1 word springs to mind > AWSOME
To Whomever wrote, "a departure from the likes of Joe Morello and Alex Duthart" - a few comments: I'll post this a few times to fit it in: 1. Much of this fanfare is directly written by Alex Duthart, sounds like his "Salute to Max Rayne" although I believe he put in a number of variations including stick clicking.
2. He played in Alex's corp, and if the notes by SSA76 are accurate, this video was taken around the time of Alex's death. 3. You obviously haven't listened to much of Jim's playing. His drum scores (solo snare with pipes or full band) are MARRIED to the pipe music. Every note he writes is weighted to the tune.
Well, I usually don't interject on my own videos but Jesus H .........I respect ALL drummers in their respective fields, but to say Travis could hold a stick to Jim at what he does.............I've seen every video of Travis...I repsect him on a kit...I've seen what he can do with two hands and ONE drum.......No comparison......I've seen high school kids that could kick his ass on a snare.
Travis Barker would look sooooo silly up against top level elite pipe band drummers like this guy...its an embrassment to even mention Travis in the same sentence.
The ironic thing is that there is no way Travis Barker would claim to be better than Jim Kilpatrick. He would probably have a lot of respect for him, and vice versa. No professional musician spends their time bitching about others and claiming titles, so all people who compare drummers to each other are doing is showing themselves to be amateurs and naive. Said my piece. xx
I parcially agree. Theres no doubt in my mind that what Kilpatrick has of technique mastery, he fails in sheer and ORIGINAL creativity. I mean, hes obviously incredible, but he likes to repeat 6 or 7 things over and over again. Look at what Buddy Rich could do... he could play a 10 min solo without one single repetition of an idea. Thats what I call a GENIUS, not "just" a master technician.
it's beyond me why you even asked in the first place. Scott owns Jim on technique, sound quality, and pretty much just the over all way he presents himself.
I think it's funny how on that jeff queen video you still talk smack about jim kilpatrick when you know mostly only DCI guys will see your comment but on here... Where it is mostly pipe band drummers you suck up and say your blown away....two-faced are we???
To say Travis Barker kicks Jims ass With two sticks in hand and one snare you must be fuckin smokin crack. Sorry, there, I said it. No.........Not sorry cause thats the truth. Give the MAN his DUE Watch current videos of Jim... CHRIST sakes Jim kicks Travis's ass with one hand .......... screw that one thumb! Peace love & keep drummin dudes. Keep the world in perspective.
That's pretty funny, (not musical) the guy has won 16 world solo titles as well as Corps Champion of Champions countless times. As for juggling, well I didn't see any, and if you don't know that's called backsticking your obviously not a drummer of any level worthwhile to make that kind of comment. You have a nice day.
Watch, listen and learn. This here is a Scotsmen. Centuries of ancestors guide his hands.
GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!! Its too bad that there are people who cant simply enjoy this great playing for what it is.
The Head Captain himself. What a hero Jim is.

Just beautiful 🙏🏼🥁
Jim kilpatrick is the best! No doubt about it!

Incredible.
