It's glorious to see the Maids really blooming as performers. This 10th anniversary concert was truly next level with amazing production, new outfits, massive crowd and top-notch performance. You're right: Saiki was smashing it that night - pitch-perfect, and really owning the occasion. (She even did a solo piano song arrangement.)

Akane's drums TOTALLY made the Solo/Interlude. In the background but there.

The entire concert was fantastic. SAIKI was on fire from the first song to the last. She even did a solo performance of one song, accompanying herself on piano.
If you listen to enough of BAND-MAID’s more recent work, you will recognize that they have been embracing Prog for a while, already.

Great reaction Mark. This was one of the songs from their 33 song 3.5+ hours set at Yokohama arena on November 2023, the finale concert of their 10th anniversary tour. The ladies were fabulous for the whole concert and Saiki was just on fire and so engaging with the audience, really enjoying herself. In the early days a lot of people nicknamed her the Ice Queen, but I think that was totally mistaken, she was just not very confident and shy. However all their constant touring in Japan,Europe and USA etc has given her vast experience and she is now very comfortable ast being a fantastic frontwoman. You are correct as well in that her vocals keep getting better, they are now more powerful (they would have to be to last for such a long concert), and I have noticed she now introduces some grit and rasp into her voice when required. Kanami is such an unassuming sweetheart until she straps on a guitar, and she will either be away in a world of her own when soloing or have a smile on her face. The converstion between her and Misa was soooo goood.

This particular concert, MISA’s bass tone was so perfect that it ought to be studied and patented. And Saiki? This show was obviously incredibly important to her. She had to have done massive preparation to be able to sing like this for the entire show. Never winded. Never missed a note. Power when she wanted, emotional when she chose. As great as she is, this was the best she’s ever sounded, in my opinion.

The bass sounds so good through the entire song. I'm not always a huge fan of Saiki's vocals but there are some songs like their punk rock songs she kills it on and this is one of them. And as always Kanami doing Kanami stuff.

Upvoted as soon as you mentioned the science and rigour of the emo scale.
Kanami: "in a wee world all of her own" ... it was ever thus. Kanami lives off in Music Land, the happiest land of them all. From there she drops brilliant riffs and songs onto the other band members, who scrub them up into full performances. Kanami appears herself in performances through a magical vision from Music Land. That is why we love Kanami.

As the Maids said at this huge, 17,000 seat Yokohama concert, it's "Chapter Two" for Band-Maid. What does that mean -- a new direction in music on their upcoming summer album... new battle gear... different stage show or venues... more collabs (The Warning, Lovebites, individual musician appearances?)... member and band projects like scoring movies, aniMaids, soloing projects like Cluppo... someone getting married or 👶🐣?? Pretty exciting stuff! Thx, Mark!

In the last couple of years she seems to have more weight and authority in her voice, and I don't know if that's from continued practice or age. Thanks for another (pause) great reaction.
You're correct about Saiki, her vocals have definitely improved over the years along with her stage presence. I love the extra passion she seems to give with every new performance as her confidence grows. Even when you compare older photo's of her to today, she looks more confident. I'd like to think that the 12000+ of us that were there helped with the entire experience. I will admit, when she walked down that runway I didn't notice (not sure about anyone else) Micho & MISA moving up the risers behind Akane until the solo started. Talk about demanding your attention by just walking and singing.
IMHO if not for the fact that (poor) Kobato wasn't featured more, it would be their best live performance video to date. I still think Domination live is the best just for the fact that all 5 had their 5-10 seconds of fame. Cheers!

This isn't even the best LIVE version of this song. That would be the Zepp Tokyo LIVE version that was taken down ahead of a DVD release. Now you can only find it on the Chinese site Bilibili. It's the 9th song in. This one's a bit more technical but that was was more dramatic. They sort of brought it back for the Lollapalooza show, but it was over shadowed by the one in 'Hate?'. There another little Call & Response "Battle" in the Studio Coast version of 'Take Me Higher'. It's pretty good as well, but that too was taken down ahead of the DVD release and is only on Bilibili..

I would not say Saiki steals the show. Sure, her singing was very good in this performance. But, for me Kanami stole it when she just chilled and played some slow wonderful musik at the beginning of the solo section, and then, after MISAS first delicious base solo part, took it up one notch with lots of echo/chorus/whatever and got it up to Pink Floyd level. Then I did drop my jaw in my knee. And then during the Kanami/MISA battle she played something "complicated" and smiled at MISA and MISA replicated it. Heaven!

Band-Maid does go a bit prog sometimes. Some people think of them as "sneaky prog" - they're not making their music obviously weird and technical, but there's a lot going on below the surface.
Giovanni, Wonderland, Balance, and Black Hole are probably their proggiest songs. Why Why Why will take you on a journey, although none of its parts are individually strange (aside from Akane being on a rampage). I'm sure there are some contenders I've forgotten.

Science is important, but history is also an important element when talking about bands as social movements.
When you chose the STUDIO version of "Don't you tell me," was your choice a coincidence, or was it someone who recommended it to you? If that choice was due to someone's recommendation, the "Don't you tell me" that someone recommended is definitely not the STUDIO version, but the live version from 2018'ZeppTokyo. Many MAIDIACKS think so. The structure of "Don't you tell me", which was performed there in 2018', is the same as this MV, which includes guitar and bass solos.
For BAND-MAID, the ``10th anniversary concert'' held at Yokohama Arena, where this music video was recorded, had a completely different meaning from a concert aimed at profiting from the attendance of a tour.
Gather as many fans as possible who have supported us up until now,
Looking back on the band's history, they played carefully selected songs from over 100 songs, and
BAND-MAID would like to thank the band's fans for their passionate support.
It was a concert that was almost like a "festival" with that meaning in mind.
That's why BAND-MAID performed a 3 hour and 40 minute live performance that would be unthinkable for a normal solo concert.
Therefore, "Don't you tell me" was also performed in the 2018 arrangement, which has rarely been done recently.
The band's 10th anniversary concert at Yokohama Arena was streamed live to the entire world, but you probably didn't watch it.
You were physically "analyzing" the role of guitar solos in music videos to promote sales.
However, I didn't think there was any value in something that ignored "history."
You don't even mention the scales Kanami uses in her solos or the composition techniques, which are extremely simple for Kanami, and you pretend that your own impressions are science and even present strange graphs, and
you talk about the wonders of SAIKI that everyone must have felt.
This "Dont you tell me" was composed by Kanami. She leads the band's practices and acts as bandmaster during live performances. You probably have at least some experience playing an ensemble at school or elsewhere. An ensemble always needs a leader. That's Kanami. She composed almost all of the songs after "Alone". Come on, I'll tell you. The music must exist before it can be played.
It's been a while since I've seen someone bring up "science" to increase the authority of their own React, and I was "impressed" by how ridiculous it seemed.
By the way, I'm not a maidiacks.

You’re also not someone who understands a joke…
I’m sorry, but your entire comment there was extremely patronising and pretentious, and honestly, my channel is not for you. You won’t get any enjoyment from any of my videos, I promise you. You’re much better off finding a classically trained musician who will sit and break down all the guitar parts for you. It’s not something I care to do. You seemed to have completely missed the point of every aspect of my video, which is a shame really, but that’s okay. Different strokes for different folks.

A two-hour rock opera about a young girl from Kumamoto who transforms into a small pigeon and goes to Shibuya to conquer the world (with the help of a sweet princess, a half-human (and half-gorilla), a ninja-assassin, and an ice queen) would be acceptable. They seem to be allergic to any songs approaching five minutes, but most of Rush's giant epics are made up of two or three minute pieces so they definitely _can_ do it. Kanami probably drinks too much coffee to ever write the Band-Maid equivalent of "Echoes."

Instead of “MarkAbusivePauseDuringKanami’sSolos” you should make “Emo Scale” t-shirts 🤓

The difference between live and studio is striking. I understand your rationale for prioritizing studio versions over live versions. However, in the case of Band-Maid I think it results in a flawed perspective. Their studio tracks give you a perspective on the label, producers, engineers - everyone except the musicians. If you want to know who Band-Maid is and what they are about as a band, live is the only way to get an accurate picture. For me, a lot of their studio tracks have become unlistenable after hearing them live. Warning! is an exception. There are a few others, but not many. Yes, they are improving always, but the difference you hear between studio and live versions of this track are not about them maturing. They actually did a (slightly) better live version of this track in 2017/18. Its behind the Band-Maid Prime paywall. Their production team does them no favors by sanitizing their studio recordings.

At this point, I just have to assume that, collectively, the UK has greatly suffered Stockholm Syndrome at the hands of Emo.😝 I say this cuz every time you say 'that's Emo,' you're just stating the things that Emo stole from Pop-Rock and Pop-Punk in the mid-2000's.

    • @markabusireactions
      @markabusireactions  6 місяців тому

You know that the pop punk from the mid-2000s derived from the emo of the late 90s, right..?
Like, Jimmy Eat World et al are basically a cross between the guitar work of American Football and the choruses of a band like Emery.

Thought you was gonna cry at one point ( 8:56 ) then again..... maybe not.
As to your EMO chart, a definition of EMO is a style of rock music influenced by punk rock and featuring introspective and emotionally fraught lyrics. Not so sure BAND-MAID's lyrics are what could be considered as introspective and emotionally fraught, quite the opposite in fact.
