The basketweave definitely has a little more high end roll off, but it's mostly noticeable with the LH close mic and the room mic. What a big job it was to make this video. Thanks for the effort Johan!
Not everything has to be Americanised. We’re already ready losing too many British words to American ones through the medium of TV and it’s descendants! 🤣
This is the kind of video that every sound geek is going to link to in every internet discussion about 4x12 cabinets, forever. Simply amazing. Your level of commitment is off the charts. Watching the making of part of the video I felt like you were unwrapping an Egyptian mummy LOL. Thanks!

I guess I am sticking to my Palmer speaker simulator plus equalizer set up , but , hey , we love you Johan , we all need a friend like you in our lives and in our records !!!! Shout out from Madrid , Spain !
You actually did it! I asked pretty much exactly that question under your last video and have been thinking about the possible differences all the time. So great to finally be able to listen to an exact A/B comparison. :)
I only scrubbed through your video on my phone before and was kind of surprised how little difference there was. However, now after carefully listening to it again using proper headphones connected to an audio interface, I can really hear the difference: It's not massive but the grill cloth does clearly affect the tone. The Checkerboard seems to have a steeper cutoff over ~3kHz, making it sound very warm. The Basketwave seems to let through more high mids, making it sound a little bit more aggressive but also giving it a bit more clarity/note separation. Having a quick look at my RME interface's spectrum analyser confirmed this pretty well. Again, thank you so much for doing these experiments in an almost scientific manner! Cheers from Germany!
My two cents..I have had them all, from 1964 through to the 70's and to modern 4x12's. I had some of the cleanest basketweave cabs around. My favorite cabs were the early 70's Checkerboard. I still have a mint 1973 "1935" cab that just sings and has gorgeous tone. The basketweave smothers the speaker too much for me. The G12H cabs I had were great, but the G12M cabs were too dark/muffled for my taste. I much prefer the check cabs with Pulsonic cones both G12M and G12H, up to the end of '73.. You can turn the treble and presence down if needed, on the check cabs, but the basketweave blocks a lot of information. That's my experience, for what it's worth.
If you consider doing this again in the future, it would be interesting to hear the cabinet with NO grill cloth, as a baseline point of reference. That would help to establish if any cloth makes any difference. Thanks for another great video! I don't know how you keep coming up with all of these interesting ideas for videos, but your channel is really helpful.

I could hear a slight difference in the top end roll off like you mentioned. Glad it was you doing the "tedious process" and not me! Looks like a lot of work. God bless and rock on brother.
What a fabulous work Johan ! Least one can say, you don’t skip any effort !! Seemed to me that the basketweave filtered highs a bit more, thus putting more mids forward. The checkboard probably cuts more in a mix. Bias/Positive Grid are offering a choice of grillcloths in their apps, but I doubt it has any effect on the sound 😂
Your attention to detail is just wonderful! Anyway, I’m really looking forward to hearing your demo of the new studio series! Can’t imagine what you’ll be able to do...
Hi Johan, again a great video. I wonder if you'll make a video about the old Park/Marshall valve amps. Can't find much about this great amps. Would be exciting.
Holy crap, this is a lot of work. I really respect and appreciate you doing this. FOR SCIENCE!!! Aside from what I mentioned the two sound identically badass to me!
Now, after seeing your efforts at 0:45 - 0:46, I understand why the cleats for securing the back of the cabinet are shaped like they are. I always wondered... I'm curious if doing this on an "A" cabinet would be easier or worse. I suppose with speakers loaded, much, much worse.

victorjbarker - Interesting... I also wonder what difference in tone there is with a cabinet made of Pine vs Birch vs MDF [Particle Board]...another project for Johan if he has not already covered it -JOHAN, what do you think ?
An amazing amount of work went into that , much appreciated my friend. Great tones ! I would love to see you add an old Ampeg V4 cab to your arsenal. They are inexpensive and sound great with Celestions. Super solid cab, not friendly to transport though ;-)
Johan, you are very knowledgeable about your gear, my question for you is I have a 1970-'72 Marshall 8X10 cabinet with 6 original silver celestions like the one on the bottom right of your cabinet shown here, checkerboard grill and plastic handles ... two missing speakers I replaced with eminences ... stupid now I know ... is this worth much? The grill's in good shape, just old.
Remember the Boogie cabinets with the barbecue grill wire on the front? Other than stopping whiskey bottles and beer cans what was the purpose of that?
It would have been interesting if you'd also recorded a sample without any grill cloth. However, I think I slightly preferred the checkerboard here, but either works for me.
It's the most identical two samples have ever sounded haha. I think it not only proves there is absolutely no difference, even the room mic sounded identical, but it also shows that after moving the cab, mics and setting them up again, you get exactly the same sound as before and not something a little different because a mic moved an inch etc.
I actually heard a difference! Subtle in the very top end, using pretty good in-ear headphones. I wonder what a metal PA grill cover would do? (You know, the beer bottle proof perforated metal grills). Loved the tune and the mix, very enjoyable. Please mix up an hour or two or three of your best music!

Next comparison: does a cork 'sniff' differently through one's left nostril, versus through one's right nostril ... 😉 Keep rockin', J-Man ... and, of course, checkerboard looks better - so it must sound better, too! 😎😉👍🏼
Hello Mr Plexi, I have a question about speakers and I figured you would be the best person to ask, I'm looking into building my own 2x12 and wondering what speakers to use for a late 60s early 70s Zeppelin/Plexi type sound, vintage 30s, greenbacks, creambacks, or a combination of 2 of them? Thank you again and thank you for another Great video! Keep on rocking Johann!! "Let's Go"
I love the focus of basketweave, it seems to fatten the tone more than just by reducing highs. Any chance of doing this comparison with pinstripe cloth as well?
"Looks Only" being the question? my vote would be checkerboard.. hmmm roll off.. perhaps at times the basket weave may have seemed to taken a bit of "topiness" off? The room mic didn't seem to reflect as much difference to my ears? Now I have a old plywood vox 2x12 cab loaded with modern greenbacks that has the cross in the cutout compared to the 2006 plywood reissue with the same greenbacks that has an open cutout and of course "night and day" different.. makes sense... Very subtle (almost indiscernible) difference I think if you were in the audience between these two?
I don't think i'm crazy. But, I definitely hear a tiny loss in highs and mids from the basketweave. Probably inconsequential in the context of a rock mix. This is not a concept i'm too familiar with so that's just what I hear. Great video, Johan.
"As if we needed another excuse to crank some old Marshalls up and make a video". I must admit that checkerboard is really growing on me lookswise though. Especially that 4010 combo you sometimes play.
The room mic is an AKG C414BXLii. I’m using 3 mics that sound as different as possible. One bright close mic, one bassy close mic and a room mic with lots of lower mids. I pan the room mic almost hard right, and the other two are balanced to make it sound as big/wide as possible but still natural. Cheers
I'm nearly 50, have a badly deaf left ear and tinnitus in my right.... If there was a difference, I'm not aware of it anyway. So in essence I'll take whichever one you don't want mate. You have to throw in the amp as well of course.... Do we have a deal???
Definitely can here a slight audible difference... Forgive my thought but the Checkerboard sounds more open and the Basket weave has less "breath" (?) ... Slightly less projection but cuts some "harshness" from the Checkerboard... My opinion anyway... Always great Johan
No differences tone wise to me. Psychoacoustics for vintage connoisseurs perhaps... but i'm not, or not enough..or my 50+ y.o. ears have already that high frequencies roll off ? I would not do the reverse job, the checkerboard style is cool looking.

Thanks Alex! Jimmy Page used Marshall model no 1982 4x12 cabs with G12H30 55Hz Greenback at least live.
@@JohanSegeborn awesome, thank you so much Johann, hope all is well and can't wait for the next video! Cheers
Checkerboard seems a little smoother to my ears while the basket weave cuts through a little more.
I love the focus of basketweave, it seems to fatten the tone more than just by reducing highs. Any chance of doing this comparison with pinstripe cloth as well?
If I get an opportunity!
Thanks Johan !!!!
Thanks man! :-)
Did you document the torque values for each screw when removing and make sure you duplicated them when you put it back together? ;)
I don't think i'm crazy. But, I definitely hear a tiny loss in highs and mids from the basketweave. Probably inconsequential in the context of a rock mix. This is not a concept i'm too familiar with so that's just what I hear. Great video, Johan.
Thanks!
Checkerboard seems to roll of a tiny bit more high end...probably good since the later 70's heads could get BRIGHT!
There is definitely a deference. The basket weave seems to be more detailed / the checkerboard takes a little something away.
I think it is more a visual thing more then sound tone
I was actually expecting a bigger difference
"As if we needed another excuse to crank some old Marshalls up and make a video". I must admit that checkerboard is really growing on me lookswise though. Especially that 4010 combo you sometimes play.
what room mic is this? :D And how do u get the sound to be so open?
The room mic is an AKG C414BXLii. I’m using 3 mics that sound as different as possible. One bright close mic, one bassy close mic and a room mic with lots of lower mids. I pan the room mic almost hard right, and the other two are balanced to make it sound as big/wide as possible but still natural. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn Thank you very much! I wish to have such good recorded tone as you one day haha
There is no way these cloth don't alter and change the sound!
I prefer Basketweave in sound, and in looks.
I'm nearly 50, have a badly deaf left ear and tinnitus in my right.... If there was a difference, I'm not aware of it anyway. So in essence I'll take whichever one you don't want mate. You have to throw in the amp as well of course.... Do we have a deal???
dcs2402 I’m as old as you and heard a slight difference in the upper treble. Did you use really good headphones?
Definitely can here a slight audible difference... Forgive my thought but the Checkerboard sounds more open and the Basket weave has less "breath" (?) ... Slightly less projection but cuts some "harshness" from the Checkerboard... My opinion anyway... Always great Johan
I like the Mesa basket weave visually and tone wise... So many factors get overlooked in our signal path!
Thanks Jason!
No differences tone wise to me. Psychoacoustics for vintage connoisseurs perhaps... but i'm not, or not enough..or my 50+ y.o. ears have already that high frequencies roll off ?
I would not do the reverse job, the checkerboard style is cool looking.
subtle, but checkerboard wins for my ears.
