  • On Megyn Kelly TODAY, former TODAY production assistant Addie Zinone describes media outlets pressing her for details of the brief sexual relationship she says she had with former TODAY anchor Matt Lauer 17 years ago, as well as criticism and shaming she has faced for coming forward now. “I’m coming forward and saying yes, this was consensual; this was an abuse of power,” she tells Kelly.

    I think I understand. It was a professional workplace. He was much older. She was young and inspired. It was an abuse of power...there was an inappropriate power dynamic with Matt being the power source. That's not just two adults doing their own thing, that's something different. She's actually illuminating something more complex, which is also more pervasive. That's what's not being received here. She actually repeatedly says she's not a victim. But in the comments, she is lambasted while everyone just looks at Matt's involvement as being an adulterous man.

    All who criticize her have no idea what they would do in the same situation. It is obvious the impact it has had on her life, especially enlisting for 2 tours of duty in Iraq. Addie is a very intelligent and brave woman and I wish nothing but the best for her and her family.

    Unfortunately, this interview does not give Addie's story justice. She's trying to validate the accusers' stories by sharing a different side of Matt Lauer that most people didn't know. You'd really have to read the piece in Variety to fully understand the scope and impact of the power dynamic that she is trying to bring to light. When I first began reading her story, I wasn't sympathetic either since it was consensual and he was married. However, after reading the entire Variety article, I do see the power dynamics at play. She's not trying to be a victim. Matt was so beloved by viewers and his accusers are anonymous, so she is coming forward to show that there were enough similarities in the other accounts that she knew that they were telling the truth, because of the same pattern of behavior. However, in her case she erroneously gave in to his advances while his accusers didn't. So she just wants people to know that he is capable of the behavior that his accusers are accusing him of.

      Katie B Erm, no, not well said Tiffany. Addie Zinone happily had an affair with a married man, and thought nothing of it, until 17 years later when she felt the urge to jump on the MeToo -witch hunt- bandwagon and blame him entirely for the whole sordid affair.
      MeToo has undoubtedly done some good, but unfortunately there are also countless cases like this where the female, who by her own admission was *consenting* and just as much to blame, accusing and vilifying a man in order to look superior, absolve herself of blame or just to experience her 15 minutes whilst playing the victim. It makes the women involved look extremely petty and makes a mockery of genuine sexual assault cases.

    • @wandadevitry5236

      Exactly, Tiffany. She stated that and Megyn did also. Several times. Lauer is a sleaze bag with a long list of victims. No matter how you look at it he is a narcissist who misused his powerful position to achieve his own sexual needs. The very fact that Addie was warned about being hit by a bus proves that she is still a victim! What kind of butt hurt people are you sticking up for womanizing dcks like M Lauer!

    I'm glad you are coming forward because these situations happen to women in the workplace all the time and knowing how to handle yourself in these situations is very important. You try to do it gracefully, but that is not always possible and you don't know what the repercussions can be. You are a human being and people make mistakes but you can also be in a vulnerable position because of how you handle things.

      People today have no morals at all and may as well be an animal. An animal has more discretion and self respect than most humans. There is no self respect at all and this woman should be ashamed of herself to expose herself over the air waves. Lauer is like a dog on two legs and the best is not to have anything to do with him. I feel sorry for his wife and kids. The children pay the price of the parents. This woman was 24 and should have known better about what goes on today. This isn't the 1800s or early 1900s she knew the score. This woman is doing this for fame and money.

    She just upset, she didn't get anything out of the relationship except branded as a homewrecker. He didn't leave his wife for her and he didn't help her professionally either. She should have kept her mouth shut and moving forward keep her legs close. Try to climb the professional ladder with sweat n tears rather then sleeping her way to the top

    If they both knew she was leaving the show, how was this an abuse of power? Also, back in 2000 Matt may not have been the same person who later went on to actually abuse some women. She is not a victim and neither was she abused, so they don't need to hear from her as much as the women who were the real victims. And those women should tell their stories, which I think they have, and he's been fired. And they can remain anonymous if they so choose. Really all she has done here is gain publicity, because everything else has already been said.

    • @angeleyesgreen1586
      @angeleyesgreen1586 6 років тому

      Stephanie Jade I wasn't looking for any response really. It was a "musing" of mine.
      I will never understand a anyone that chooses to enter into that kind of relationship and then lays the lion share of the blame on the person they did it with. It was her choice. If he had come out and said do it or you're fired, well that's criminal isn't it? But, she had an affair with a married coworker. Was he gross? Definitely. Should she have said no???
      Her case is just another, different, kind of situation we have to navigate as the metoo movement is worked through, simply because they worked together and he was the "star" of the today show.

    • @stephaniejade7056
      @stephaniejade7056 6 років тому +7

      It's much more complicated than two consenting adults going into a relationship. He was not her boyfriend. He was also 42+ and nearly 20yrs her senior!. She was only 24 (the human brain does not complete development until 25: she was biologically not an adult).
      The power imbalance DID have a psychological affect on her -- this is what too many people misunderstand or do not acknowledge, so they'd rather use armchair psychology, which doesn't work because it so far from the truth of what was actually going on, and they do more damage to society. It's like a witch-hunt and it's really ignorant and can be cruel.
      Like I said, your question is rhetorical -- for effect, not seeking real answers. You've already made up your mind, and that doesn't help anyone. And that is the problem that adds to the one already existing (her story). When you say, "I will never understand..." that's very telling. And, you go on, "...anyone that [who] chooses to enter into that kind of 'relationship' and then lays the lion share of the blame on the person they did it with." She's taking her share of the blame, and she says it over-and-over.
      Also, what amazes me is that you say you are not looking for a response, yet post a public comment for millions of people to see. How is that logical? Perhaps if I agreed with you and didn't challenge your assumptions you'd be happier in your complacency.
      Of course I don't know you, you're probably a decent person. But, please, think deeper about things if you really want to get answers for your questions -- you're obviously perplexed, why not dig deeper? Certainly there have been times in your life you did things you wondered why you did them. Only in this woman's case, the lure/manipulation was much more deviant. I feel compassion for her.

    In the comments I see women most ardently attack a women who has been exploited by a powerful man. The lack of compassion & aggressive shaming is abusive. Young women are very often targeted by such men FOR A REASON: their inexperience makes them more vulnerable & easier to manipulate. Sexual abusers have patterns & they choose their targets carefully because they know, as she knows, the victim will be blamed & harassed--as we see right here. And every single attack emboldens sexual predators.

      Well I guess you've not been the target of uncomfortable, disgusting advances by powerful men at your workplaces. Good for you! Might be different for your sister, mother, aunt, cousin, daughter. You can't win because these men have all the cards - refuse their advances and risk your career might die down before it started (if it happened to oscar winner Mira Sorvino, what do you think will happen to a small PA?!). Give in - live with the shame all your life. The only thing that could stop it is powerful men stopping to claim sexual favours from people working for them. The law hasn't done much - quid pro quo sexual harassment has been illegal for 30 years. No one cared, apparently. So there needs to be public shame. If it goes onto your nerves - you're either not capable of empathy or ignorant. The latter can be helped by education. Maybe your future daughter will start in a better workplace. Will that be with your support?

      Sounds like a whole lot of excuses you're giving as well. The insults also show your intelligence. No where in my writing did I say I'm without sin nor did I say I'd never been a victim. I just see excuses and lies made constantly by woman and in order to heal or be taken seriously you need to own up, stop with the excuses and lies. Just a bit of advice for the next time you want to comment..... gather your thoughts, don't call names and don't write something you know nothing about. You don't know me, you don't know my life. Your rambling nonsense and name calling doesn't help the awareness you are desparetly trying to bring to this excuse filled youtube video.

    My opinion is that if you sit down and talk to your mother's, aunt's, grandmother's you would start to understand how many years females have been put into situations that their counter parts are not. Example women had to wear dresses, makeup, if they could not afford a new pair of Hosiery for their legs they had to draw a line up the back of their legs to look like they had some on. It is a fact for many years women have been put into positions where they will loose if not in agreement with their male peers.. It still goes on today.. She never called herself a victim, nor says what she done was right. She carries blame. She just wanted to put a face to the picture that was going around. I am proud of her for taking her own blame in this story. That takes strength that most of humans do not have...

Being 24 back then versus being 24 today is different. I think women today may be a little stronger and know what avenues they can take for support..

    People in relationships and married women can be abused. When it is forced that is abuse. She was very young when she was with Lauer. Some people do not want to lose their job and not get other jobs because of saying no. Then she heard about others whom he controlled. Anyway--they went to her home now and put her name out there. She had started a new life with her husband and children. Lauer kept working and the women could not.

    Two things I think a lot of commenters are overlooking is that 1. This woman is not necessarily calling herself a victim. She has never claimed that this was anything other than consensual. She is trying to shine a light on behaviors that constitute sexual harassment by someone in the work place who has more power over you. These behaviors, like making comments about how a woman is dressed at work and sexualizing coworkers are often not consensual. I’m sure there are many other women out there that he said the same things to that were uncomfortable by his behaviors, especially when it’s their boss. She’s pointing out a pattern. And 2. This woman did two tours of duty in our army in Iraq, and I applaud and thank her for her service to our country.

      @@tjmichael8773 I am saying that as a powerful authority figure and a married man, Matt Lauer had a responsibility not to hit on women in the workplace. He was much older. She was starting a new job and she didn't know if he would be vindictive if she refused his advances. One word from him even in a new town and new job could ruin her career. The relationship was not on a level playing field so I do believe he should at least pay for her therapy bills. He messed up her life and he messed up other young women's lives. To put it simply, it was an abuse of power. Also, did you see the tapes where he was talking to Meredith Viera in that creepy voice? He is a predator.
