- Carrion reviewed by Mitchell Saltzman on Xbox One and PC. Also available on Nintendo Switch.
Carrion nails the power fantasy of being a horror movie monster, but makes exploration a chore that pads the adventure.

So this is why monsters aimlessly wander the halls in horror games. They don't have a map.
Where the mapp
I should just make a mod for all these crybabies lmao.
Hah, yes! A map mod for all those unintellectual crybabies that don't know where they are going, haha!
Ha... when's the mod coming out? I need it for a friend.
@@silver1340 A friend you say...😂😂😂
@@zombieburger8990 yes, a "friend"
It's not like he need that btw
This game might bring some fresh air to the horror genre. Hopefully we'll get some unique reverse horror type games in the future.
So far, only thing like it is the Alien campain in the AVP games.
Solid 8.5, had a lot of fun and the puzzles aren’t that hard long as you know how to solve simple problems
puzzles were real cool.
Agreed, and as a biological mess, it would have felt weird to have access to a map. Is the monster supposed to bring up its PDA to look up where he is?
@@Gashtalf right? and honestly learning the map was real cool. rather than just blindly traversing from here to there.
@@ot4_AUT and sometimes fleshy echo location
@@Gashtalf Maybe there could've been some rooms where there would be a digital map on a screen or something? Even though the facility is full of people who should know what they're doing and where they're going, there should've been at least something for the interns
Its an 8 for me for its originality.
ikr originality is hard to come by these days
a 6 for me, its originality was cool in the first 30 mins, after that it got really repetitive.
@@artefloe7676 nah
@@artefloe7676 honestly if you're there because you can throw people about, the game loses it's novelty very quickly. But if you're there for the gameplay loop, progression, and puzzles, then it's a really enjoyable up to the very end.
Been having a tonne of fun with this. Solid indie title. Even better when it's free on gamepass
Gamepass is just so awesome and XSX and all those games on gamepass its not fair.
Bro this game is on gamepass. Like xbox or pc?
@@techh9171 You can get it on PC game pass too!
It's on Game Pass?! Dude sick
Yup I just finished it on game pass. I want more!!!
Now I want a new Alien game where you play as a xenomorph like the old AvP ones
*Yes*
the killing animations would be way better and the graphics would be awesome if they made a unexpected sequel.
YES!
8/10 really makes you FEEL like carrion
For a indi game I’ll give it a solid 9. Yes you feel lost at first but you’ll quickly figure out the layout. I just fell in love with the horror. I’m ready for the sequel already.
_A little something for everyone._
Really makes you feel like The Thing
@@aarronsmith17 Yo it would be cool if we had some ability where we can infect Some people in the game when the monster's blood splatters on the npcs or when the monster grabs them for 3 seconds and Lets go and they start turning after 12 seconds and they help you in the game by killing the soldiers or drones or robots and you can command them to Fuse with you to get more mass but the people with hazmats and soldiers can't get infected just like how when the thing touches you you Become infected
Did anyone notice how there was a second containment cell under the one you start in that is broken?
I thought it was great, solid 8/10 imo
It’s way too easy to get lost. And the game absolutely grinds to a halt when that happens, as you retrace your steps through big empty rooms.
Yeah, I least the enemies don't respawn
All because the developers didn't bother to put in a map when you could remedy that by having the "monster" leaving behind red trails. To make it easy to retrace steps.
I completed the game no bother, it’s when I was trying to get all the secret collectibles is where I got super lost. Eventually found them all without a guide so I can give it credit on that. A game where you don’t need a guide to get all the achievements! 9/10 from me imo
I wish there was at least a tiny arrow on the side of the screen hinting me in the right direction. But once you got lost it is easy to put more and more distance between you and the next objective making the way back even harder and more incomprehensible. It really is THE major design flaw of the game.
👌
This feels like the closest thing to a Carnage game right now.
"makes you wonder how these monsters got around without a map"
Are you serious my guy since when does a monster need a map to go around causing destruction? Never seen a monster asking for directions on where the next victims are.
Brooooooo I said the same thing!!!!!!
Ever heard of a joke?
Let me see so you get it right : Objective is not the same then go around and cause destruction.... Let me give you a objective to do but i won't tell you where it is on this world. You would get lost pretty quickly right? Well same in the game. Can be fun but most of the time really frustrating after countless times.
The sophisticated Carrion: "Ah yess, let me consul my map as to figure out where I should go about my conquest of human destruction next.
map is unnecessary but texts literally embedded into the bricks directed towards player doesn't break immersion
one of my absolute horrifying memories that scarred me was watching the movie DEEP RISING and now this takes me back to it but let me be the monster ! instant buy !
great flick :)
I used to love that movie when it dropped I was in like 4th grade lol
Yeah after seeing that movie, you will never see your toilet bowl the same way again.
the green exit signs are usually an indicator on where to go, once the path is open
10/10 Truly appeals to the male fantasy.
Nevermind just kidding😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
S U B A R A S H I
I'd give it 9/10, played it all the way through in one setting on xbox one game pass, very interesting game and couldn't let go till i was done with it.
Does the camera have to move around THAT MUCH?! Making me nauseous after 30 seconds, let alone however many hours it'll take to beat it.
i happen to my to in some games ,in this i get some head problems
It is because the camera pans in the direction you point the R stick. When thrashing the people with the tentacles. When you are the one controlling it it isn't too bad
It’s not bad at all when you’re the one doing it.
"Awesome game, but no map."
7/10 - IGN
Around the lab there are green signs with white arrows (2:05) directing you where to go just like the game Control. People complained about that game's map too.
Personally, i would give this game an 8/10. I 100% completed it in about 3.5 hours in my first playthrough. I did wish from time to time for a map but I didn't have as big an issue getting lost as this Mitch seemed to. I don't think he learned to use the roar function properly if he was actually lost for 2.5 hours. That shouldn't happen unless you are completely terrible at navigation. I agree that it could have been a little more Metroid-vania like with more secrets and meaningful things to backtrack for, it did feel rather linear and the ending is a major missed opportunity (no last boss or final challenge of any kind) but man I still can't wait to play through it again. It is a LOT of fun moment to moment. Highly recommend. It's not AAA First Party Sony game but it definitely is a satisfying meal of a game absolutely worth your time.
So...how to maximize the usage of the roar? Just for the navigation, for stealth and combat I have no problem with it.
Anyway
The important thing is this game is Indie, and *NOT FROM EA*
The roar function just locates dead bodies. Doesn’t tell you where to go.
@@StevieRoyale Then you sir, do not know how to use it properly.
@@Draidis explain how to use it.
@@StevieRoyale It also shows you the direction of portals into different areas. Which is actually useful when navigating
You are 100% right about the map. I got lost big time, but due to how short the game is I found it more rewarding when I finished the game. It was frustrating but overcoming it was worth it.
I finished it in about 4 hours and then went back to 100% it which took another 2 hours because I didn’t want to look any locations up. The game time definitely could’ve been cut in half with a map. Towards the end I was pretty familiar with the layout. It felt kind of short and I was hoping to get more from those flashback scenes and something after the escape from the facility. Not really any replay value in my opinion but a solid one time experience
There is a modding discord where people create custom levels to the game.
@@lokki9203 You say that and give no link.
I would love a fully fleshed out triple A game where you play as a space monster
Reminds me of this old game on iOS called perfect cell from years ago this game is played in almost the same way and almost exactly the same premise ( getting more mass and ability , Platforming , story , etc )
As soon as I saw enemies being flung left and right, the first game that came to my head was a PS1 game called Wild 9!
8.5 or 9 should have been a fair score, these original games are supposed to be recognized and motivated!!
They are recognized. And I'm sure they are motivated with a low score to keep them hungry and push for better games.
You cant have 16-bit look scary... nevermind
Some people were scared by distraint too
I thought it was a very solid game. It’s a bit short but a great start for this kind of genre. There needs to be more single player “be the monster” games out there.
I've been playing this game for a little bit and it's ridiculously easy to get lost, so many of the environments look pretty much exactly the same. It's pretty linear ando you sometimes have to take a seemingly pretty convoluted path to get where you need to be
if you enjoy being lost this is a game made for you
Ign is giving almost every game a 7/10
I think a that makes sense though considering they basically only score 5-10. 7 is average, "if you think it's looks cool give it a try, but don't feel like you're missing out"- that's like 80% of games imo 😂
Ghost of Tsushima got a 9.
Sounds like confirmation bias to me.
@@GrimJackal ign has a median score of 7.2. Not too far off tbh.
Lotta mid games out there
Solid review. Loving the idea of playing as that monster. I'd be grinning too. Thanks.
i dont normally like these kinda games honestly but i actually want this now
That's lotta tentacle.
Just finished the game few hours ago. Solid reverse horror.
“I got lost for 2 hours.” 7/10 IGN
"of AIMLESS WANDERING" ....
It's a great game but even I got lost towards the end 😄
Project Warlock and a few other shooters had levels inspired by John Carpenters' "The Thing", where you shoot at fleshy monsters and now we have a game where you are the Thing...
its also on game pass if anyone wants to try it.
Yeah, it´s fun, but backtracking is an issue without a map. Luckily you can find some maps online if you intend to find all the optional upgrades.
Don't usually go for these types of games but I'm definitely downloading this...
Now we need another game like that but 3D
I know there’s Prototype but I meant a different IP
I think it deserves a 9 for nailing the core concept so perfectly. I agree with the reviewer that it's easy to lose your way, but equally, navigating the environment is a joy and you really get into the mindset of this awful creature stalking the halls. Loved it.
Such an awesome choice to have it added to gamepass, map is issue is real but otherwise fantastic. Hope to get a 2nd one but in the artic like The Thing
does the screen move so fast like that? it hurts my eyes
Fun game, sound design is on point. Haven't played a Digital Devolver game before and it makes me curious to check out their other games.
Katana zero is pretty damn great.
I enjoyed Carrion, but because of the lack of a map, and no clear way to tell what you’re supposed to do, it was very easy to get lost
You sound like you're repeating whta you just heard, and probably didn't even play the game.
@@grubbybum3614 rather than what other reviewers do? Just repeat the opposite and clown the reviewer?
When he said getting lost was miserable......I felt that
Can't wait to see this on AGDQ
the Roar ability helps with navigation. i didnt mind not having a map. you're an newborn monster quick mobility lol it kinda made sense. the controls and movement are smooth and fast. too many paths or secrets to find would make navigation more frustrating. i just wanted to run around and kill things as fast as i wanted to. i also felt that i still had just enough room to play around with
I wonder if this game has replay value, and if it doesn't, hopefully the length of the story is enough to make it worth $20.
The level design is confusing (because there's no map or compass) but brilliant!
Amazing game. I loved it. I just wish it was longer. It'd be cool to continue to play after the ending scene. xD
I'm waiting for the BLASPHEMOUS free DLC/expansion coming tomorrow. it's gonna be great.
There used to be an Iphone game exactly like this, can't remember what it's called but the whole feel of it and concept is the same.
Anyone remember what game that was? You could split into multiples and it has a puzzle element, really similar graphics to this.
Harry Tucker sounds interesting
Harry Tucker Someone mentioned Perfect cell in the comments.
perfect cell, I was thinking the same thing
I'm going to wait for a sale. Was super pumped to play this but looking at the average completion time...seems way too short of an experience for the price.
I loved it but was so upset when it ended.. i wanted much more content so I get what you are saying.. def worth the current price tho to help out the indie devs
Gamepass ;)
@@shittysingingaccount Got it on switch here
There are custom levels.
Would recommend Butcher, the studios previous game, to anyone who enjoys this!
really want this but for such an expensive game to be so short, i'm gonna wait for it to be on sale. i couldn't justify buying it with so many other games on my wishlist no matter how much I'd love to play it.
Almost all games can be had for about €5,- to €10,- if you are willing to wait a year or more.
Who else had an evil smile on their face for 90% of the video?
Are there more games like this and Butcher that anyone knows?
Please 4 Playstore!!!
The demo felt more interesting for some reason (I also feel like it had more details). I did 100% in 5 hours during my first playthrough, can't deny I was expecting more :/
So your disappointed then
Try playing custom levels?
Reminiscent of Metroid Fusion and i fkn loved that game for the gba
No Parkway drive references or in the ost?
9/10 just for that
a map or a current objective reminder would make this game a 9 or 10
7 seems fair to me. I did get lost quite a bit and it is very frustrating. Even more so when you quit your session and continue later, starting at a safe point that is miles away from your next objective and you don't have the slightest clue where to go for that and what it even is you are looking for.
*hears about Carrion* hey, this sounds cool. Let's check out a review.
*starts video*
Jesus, that's brutal.
The monster reminds me of the movie named the thing
10/10 never thought ide be playing meatball simulator in 2021
I cant help but remember SAYA NO UTA in this game...
Reminds me of the movie slither
yeah 7 is what i gave too, its would be an 8 but i got so lost so many times
That's supposed to be the fun part of metroidvena because there designed that way to the point that it makes you feel like you want to get lost and take in all the environments and feature out where the secrets are
One of the more positive reviews I've seen for this game. It really is mixed all around.
Its amazing one time play game
It seems like the creators got some inspiration from the final last parts of the game “Inside.” Pretty awesome
My wayward son. There will be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't you cry no more.
Finished it one day, it is a great game
It might not be the best game ever.
But I beat this game 100% in one sitting.
It's short enough to not get tired of the mechanics which are pretty unique and has just enough secrets/puzzles to keep going around the map to find them all.
Story is.. well, nothing's perfect..
I think this is where I was hoping Playdead's "INSIDE" would go
Yeah that would've been refreshing
Keep calm and carrion
This game is a 9 for me, didn't get too lost but can easily see someone doing so.
They need to make an Aliens game like this, that’d be dope
The Blob: super saiyan 2 edition
Can’t wait for ultra instinct blob
Nope this is more like The thing movie.
*would be fun if it's release on android!*
Dark souls has numbed me when it came to having no maps
Dark Souls had a fast travel mechanic to make up for the lack of a map. And it's easier to memorize locations in 3-D. I love Carrion so much but I believe it desperately needs a map.
Plus, Dark Souls isnt a Metroidvainia.
Thanks for the review Mr. Saltzman, but not for me. I prefer the scary, intelligent villains to the force of nature monstrosities, and while this game does look scary, I found the monster designs in the early Metroid/Castlevania games scared me a hell of a lot more back in the day.
This game isnt supposed to scare you. Its designed so you can have fun scaring the NPCs. It also involves strategy because you face off against some heavily armed people. You need to figure out how to get them to lower their guard long enough to eat them.
@@josephfrechette9916 Thanks for the reply. While that is a novel approach, and 2D horror with regular strategic encounters have been used well in recent games (ex. Hollow Knight, Death's Gambit, Salt & Sanctuary), this particular one isn't for me. Reminds me of the final level of INSIDE, but that only worked because it concluded the narrative and put a new perspective on the story. Carrion doesn't have the same nuance or sophistication. There is definitely an audience for these type of games (ex. Doom: Eternal, or Dark Souls), but its not for me.
It's like the Carnage symbiote
For me its an 8.5, Its pretty fun killing people and moving around, and though i did get lost a few times, plus a near lack of story, the game play is where it shines best and thats exactly why i got it, and i had a blast till the end.
Deserves an 8/10 for what it is. Fun as hell game aswell.
When is it out for ps4?
It's unknown for now
@@Ashley_J.W thanks for the info!
It's easy to find the exit, but it's hard to complete 100%

Reminds me of Inside. Disappointing how short it is though.
Isn’t Inside 2 hours long?
Shiftingerino Shaderino yea i mean i was disappointed by the length of that game as well. But it was so well designed and well paced i could overlook it. I also got it for free.
I knew this game was more than just for me when I play it in bed in my switch and my girl takes her eyes off Facebook to look at my screen

I love that song.
@@grubbybum3614 likewise my friend
So based on the comments, I should wait for a steam sale?
seems like something you would find in the scp foundation
Never would give this game below a 9. It's a fantastic experience unlike anything else. Sure, it's a bit short and the lack of a map are both issues but I never found the game repetetive. If you find the game repetetive you don't have an imagination.
Anybody else think parkway drive when they saw the title???
Fantastic review
Yes, I got lost one time playing this game, it took me only 20 minutes to understand where I needed to go so... Honestly I don’t know if I was lucky or if this reviewer is a little dumb. For me the game it’s a 8 without doubt.
I think you just got lucky, I found myself getting lost quite often and it seems like others have the same problem
Juan Carlos Rodriguez
I didn’t get lost at all. But once I beat the game I used a map to find the collectibles
The only thing I can't stand is the camera. It's honestly making me dizzy as the camera violently zooms LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All in about 10 seconds. I can see this causing seizures in people that normally wouldn't experience them.
