For years, I consumed copious amount of dairy from cows milk and cheese. It allowed me to keep my blood sugar in check easily and efficiently. Unfortunately it had negative consequences for my skin. Granted I was consuming in quite large amounts. I've tried some of these substitutes, but found them all to taste horrid. Particularly in coffee. I find it easier to simply omit these foods from my diet entirely. Coffee was nothing more than a morning routine for me, I've never understood the pronounced caffeine effect so many experience. I feel nothing. For cheese, I've switched to goat cheese and seemingly removed any of the negative side effects.

It's unfortunate that almond milk is one of the most resource intensive plant-based milks to produce, requiring much more water than the alternatives. Apparently a single glass of almond milk takes about 74 litres (roughly a shower's worth) of water, while a glass of soy milk takes about 6 litres.

Unfortunately, almond milk is high in oxalates, which contributes to kidney stones. I've had kidney stones and, believe me, you don't want them. Coconut milk is best. Unsweetened Coconut milk is not that good, but put a little stevia in it and it is more than adequate! It is also very low in oxalates.

Soy milk is out since I’m allergic to soy and I can’t afford goats milk or coconut milk. I drink 2% cows milk 8 oz every morning with my eggs toast, bacon and 2 oz orange juice. I’ve been looking at a couple of containers of almond milk in my refrigerator not knowing if I should drink it. I think with everything moderation is key. Anyway, the most challenging time of the year is coming up for diabetics, thanksgiving and Christmas then New Years. I may have to tattoo the words moderation on my forehead.😂😂😂 or hand to remind me.

Sorry to tell you Dr. Ergin and others..When you buy regular Almond, or other nut milks they hardly contains that much of that nut! For example the Almond milk in 8 oz uses about 4-7 Almond nuts and the rest are fillers.... If your store caries the cardboard milks that use up to 4x the almonds and no fillers much better then the main nut milks!

If you love milk but can’t have it because of lactose intolerance or you can’t have it because of the milk sugar content, try the Fairlife brand which is lactose free, has only 6g of carbs per cup, 6 g of sugar and has a whopping 13g of protein to boot! It is also very tasty just like any other milk! Fairlife milk is made by a filtration process that separates milk and water, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals and lactose (milk sugar) and then recombines them into different proportions which produces a lactose-free milk with 50% more protein, 30% more calcium and 50% less sugar then regular milk, with a benefit of tasting yummy! I have been drinking this milk for a long time now after a friend of mine who’s daughter is a surgeon that specializes in weight loss surgery recommended it to me and who is using it herself. I am not a diabetic, nor am I overweight, however both my brother and my mother (both deceased now) had diabetes and I am trying my very best to avoid this disease at all cost by eating right.

I’ve tried all sorts, but much prefer cashew milk - not mentioned here. I eat a very low fat plant-based diet anyway as fats drive my insulin resistance something awful. And pasteurised dairy is the worst because the enzymes & beneficial microbes that would help my gut process the stuff is destroyed. That breaks me out with Candida, too.
I did Low Carb Keto for over 8 years, struggled with it all the way through, but eventually it not only drove my insulin resistance into orbit & not even loads of insulin would get it down, but it also trashed my digestion which refused to process animal protein any more. Probably my poor lymph is so clogged & congested around my gut it just can’t deal with the digestive outfall or lipids any more.
If I stick to a very low & even better, no fat/oil plant-based diet, my insulin sensitivity returns & I need way less insulin than when on Keto, despite the carbs. But i have found that the more fats or oils I consume - even small amounts, the more resistant I become & the more insulin I need to get my blood sugar down. Low/no fat is also the only way I can lose weight. I actually gained loads of extra weight on Keto, even though my carbs were less than 30g per day & I even tried ‘Zero Carb’ for a while. Had I realised my body was becoming fat-saturated I never would have embarked on Keto.
