Beatrix in FFIX actually must be defeated in order to progress her boss fight and force her to do the AoE attack that takes everyone down to 1 hp and brings it to a close. This only happens if you can survive for 10 turns, or if you get her HP down to 0. If she wipes your party before either one of these conditions are met, it's game over... So you still have to be good enough to survive and/or do enough damage!

You did Baldur's Gate 3 dirty to put them on this list. In contrast to all the other unkillable bosses mentioned in the list (except Helldalf), the game actually lets you go through with killing the Emperor and lets you reach an alternative ending with its own cutscene. It's not as if you beat the Emperor and then the game ressurrects him and forces you to play on as if you had lost the fight, You instead die of the consequence of killing the Emperor and get a bad ending (Because it turns out he was actually telling the truth about him helping you out to prevent your transformation, so fighting him at that point was simply the wrong call. But that's not disrespecting player agency/skill, it's quite the opposite. Of course almost all players will reload and make a different choice to see the rest of the game, but they don't have to. You are perfectly free to take the bad ending and end your playthrough there because you decided your character would never have trusted a mindflayer.).

Holy Essaying "No a game over screen forcing you to reload is super duper different!"
Dude, it's just a game over screen and a different way of forcing the game back on the rails.

It's a totally different story outcome, based on your decision to attack an NPC who was vital for your survival at that point in the story. Games that railroad the player usually just don't give you the option to attack such an NPC.
Also, it's not a boss fight that you have to lose because you have two options to play on: Decide to either not trust him and lose the fight OR decide to play along with his scheme for now and not attack him at all.

Biggest gripe was NOT KNOWING, RPGS on PS1 were notorious for this annoying trope. So you’d waste half your inv (not you elixir, you stay for the very real post credit boss) thus making you lose a bunch of items that were either rare drops or stupid expensive and since the save points were few and far between you had to just give up and roll with it, that or hope you get o that annoying part again with minimal losses, again.

Disgaea (and for some reason Melty's Quest) does this a lot, to the point that you can fill this whole list with NIS game. Make you fight Etna or Laharl or some other overpowered demon that is like level 5000 while your strongest unit is level 10. But on New Game+, or if you abused random dungeons, you can win those... which will give you a bad ending and send you on a new cycle.
That said, I think there was at least one NIS game, where winning that battle led to a whole new route. A short one, where you're basically a conqueror, but still, an actual proper route.
Also, Langrisser punished you for beating the unbeatable in a different way. On a second stage, you are supposed to run away. You can somehow beat the cavalry captain (which greatly outlevels you) chasing you, but doing so will make his commander hate you. While he is supposed to offer you to join them later, an offer you can accept (and probably should, since your side sucks in their misguided heroism), defeating that captain will rob you of that option.

It's not really a "you lose if you're too good" deal, but I remember in the og Tales of Symphonia, you couldn't beat Yggdrasill (The Main Bad Guy) in any of the battles you fought against him other than the last ones. Because, as soon as you dealt enough damage to him the battle would end and he'd pull a cutscene attack that would instantly move the plot as if you'd lost to him.
What's funny is that, in the first encounter you have with him, you can actually beat the two bosses you fight before him, who can also be scripted losses, and they'll trigger alternate cutscenes. But, of course, this is easier said than done and is usually much more possible in a New Game + run than in a new run, at least the second boss.

While triggering the auto loss cutscene in the 1st fight against Tao Pai Pai in Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure is kinda hard, it is by no means the hardest enemy in the game. There is a 2nd, much harder unwinnable fight, against old Piccolo. While against Tao Pai Pai 1st encounter you still have 1 full HP bar against 3 HP bars, against old Piccolo your health is equivalent to 7 hits (less than 1 full combo from Piccolo), while he has 4 HP bars (about 16-20 times your HP), crazy unfair hard CPU, insane stance damage, and more. Triggering this forced loss cutscene is crazy hard, harder than completing the entire boss rush.

I'm still a little pissed off about the first Kahn fight in Ghost of Tsushima.
Of course I didn't know it was scripted when I first played it when it came out so I ended up wasting so much time trying to beat him, in the very first encounter alone I spent over 40 mins kicking his arse with his health totally empty and I just couldn't figure out why he wouldn't die.
I thought it was a glitch or something, so I restarted my PS4 then I tried again and I got him to the same point and he wouldn't die, so of course I tried again and again and again. It was only after restarting the game for the 5th or 6th time and spanking him but not being able to beat him that I finally got so pissed off that I tossed my controller aside and just let him win, it was only when the cut scene kicked in that I had a gigantic face palm moment and I realized it was scripted.
It was a total let down that SuckerPunch didn't think to do something like an early alt ending where you stop the invasion and the games end if you happen to beat the Kahn in your first encounter or they could've at the very least given us an Achievement/Trophy for it.
I mean if they would've at least given us a Trophy I wouldn't have wasted like an hour and half replaying the mission bc I would've realized when it trophy sounded that was scripted as I would've paused the game and looked it up.

No. 1 actually should've been the boss fight against Doku in the first mission of Ninja Gaiden 1 (2004). You can beat him easily enough, but he still successfully kills Ryu Hayabusa anyway whether you win or lose, and a hayabusa aka peregrine falcon (the clan's patron deity) perched on a nearby overhead branch revives him from death.
The Dynasty Warriors franchise also has quite a few enemy officers and commanders who get to retreat from battle instead of falling. Lu Bu is king, but Meng Huo has to be beaten a whopping 8 times in the Nanman campaign with the Shu forces to win him over as an ally - which is the highlight of his place in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story.

Simply because although you can upgrade your characters for a strategic defense, you also need to be lucky enough so "GUTS" works almost everytime. He kills a character with 1 attack and you do 1hp damage per hit. So, it took me several times until this "lucky" happened! hahahaha
Nothing changes, but the satisfaction is true!!!

I can’t play Ghost of Tsushima without shouting, “KHAAAAAAAAAANNN!!!!!!!” whenever Kotun does something evil xD
THANK YOU, also, FOR MENTIONING TALES OF ZESTIRIA!!!!! It’s such a good game that doesn’t get as much love as it should IMO. And while I’m thinking about bosses your suppose to lose to, the Tales of series is a bit notorious for having these kinds of fights at some point in the run. Symphonia had MANY fights against a boss you’re meant to lose to, but if you’re doing a New Game+ run (or are just really good/have enough items/have the AI setup correctly), it’s possible to win.
Hell, I did that when I did a New Game+ run the first with in Tales of Symphonia Knight of Ratatosk, and because I had bought a certain item exp item from the grade shop, Emil went from level 1 to level 50 instantly after I won xXlD

I believe in the original mega Man x game, you have to fight someone towards the beginning of the game that they won't allow you to beat. Then another character comes in and saves you.

Gades (1st encounter) in Lufia 2. He has the same stats as when you fight him toward the end of the game, so you typically lose within a few turns.
Nevertheless, he's kinda weak for an endgame boss, and he can be legitimately beaten if you grind a bit, have a good strategy, and have enough attrition to whittle his large HP pool. Doing so will earn you a huge chunk of EXP, and you even win his unique sword!
That doesn't stop him from knocking out your party in the cutscene afterward, and the game proceeding like normal.

It wasn't that Heldalf beat you bigger in the bad end. The interaction between Seraph and Vessel is at play; you learn Heldalf's Vessel is pretty significant. Killing him killed him; what happens after involved the vessel.

My favourite unwinnable boss fight is the one from Jedi: Fallen Order. Unlike these ones you dont get "punished for being too good" you just cant win in any way. The boss is too powerful. This seems like it wouldnt be fun nor interesting, but after defeating the final boss seeing Vader himself come to fight you and you realizing he cannot be defeated is a perfect way to showcase his strength in terms of the lore AND the game. (half of this "battle" is literally you running away as he ravages the entire base with his mind)

  • @kurokaze511
    @kurokaze511 15 днів тому

You know, I'm not all that upset when if you're winning the game goes to a cutscene showing you lose. At least with that there's an explanation, and like in the Sekiro one they even give you an alternate cutscene to take into account your win. The ones that really irritate me are the ones like Khotal Khan and the guards that arrest Bayek in the beginning of AC:Origins that stop losing health once they get halfway down. I absolutely hate it when they don't even bother to take into account that you might win so they just make the enemy immortal until you get frustrated and just let them kill you. Honestly that happening just turns me off of the whole game, I never got further than an hour or so into Ghost of Tsushima because that annoyed me so much. I think it's because when that happens I kind of just go "Oh well if I'm throwing a fight this soon into the game then what's the point of me putting an effort into beating any of the other bosses."

  • @Toadzx
    @Toadzx 17 днів тому

Being forced to lose isn’t annoying.
It’s only annoying in situations like the magic knight rayearth game where in the fight your supposed to lose every time you win there is some dialogue and then you start the fight over without being able to heal, but that game was so easy that I could have probably won that fight a hundred times before losing by attrition.

  • @Terastas

Does Gades from Lufia 2 count? The first time you fight him it's meant to be a forced loss, but it's possible to beat him. You even get experience, money, and a weapon that's stronger than most of the rest you can get outside the roguelike bonus dungeon. The reason I'm not sure it counts is because when you beat him, it's the whole kit & kaboodle where his battle sprite fades away like in any other fight you win against him or his ilk and you get the battle results screen. You get the weapon outside of battle, and then Gades flexes his full power for a moment to instantly put your party in the same condition that losing the fight would.

Iris 3 has really BRUTAL bosses ie the time guardian boss at low HP will keep on Making CLONES of itself and since you won't SURVIVE 4x Meteor spells even at its MAX lv of 50 in 1 turn if you can OFF that OPTIONAL boss before it makes even 1 clone DO so.
Every time the boss clones itself the REAL boss gains ALL of its lost HP back to 100% and starts to clone itself as soon as it and its clone lose HALF of its HP it by default and its clones RESIST physical hit damage and its resists ALL SPELL damage at the same time sadly Iris 3 doesn't HAVE a skill/spell to completely remove BOTH its physical and magic resistence.

I wonder if the four Black Knights in Final Fantasy 2 count? I'm not sure it counts as a boss since it's the first enemy encounter in the game, happening before you even gain control of your party, and uses the regular battle music. However, a lesser version of the Black Knight enemy serves as a mini-boss in the dungeon where you fight...I think it's the penultimate boss? Well it's a stretch either way given you have to hack the game to give at least one of your characters end-game stats to beat them, but if you do the game basically rage quits. It spits you back out to the title screen. I'm sure there's something going on with not having a field position set or whatever if you want to seriously discuss the fine details of what happens here, but the general consensus among those who discuss this little peculiarity is that the game is like 'f*ck it, you win'. It's funnier that way, too.
