When Cold Chisel reunited and got together to rehearse after many, many years apart Jimmy Barnes said: "After five minutes together we were all wondering why we ever broke up. And after an hour we remembered."

Mr modern Renaissance Man, I would love to hear your reaction to the "Star Hotel" by Cold Chisel. This is a song about a riot that happened when a pub closed down and on the final night the police arrived early and told everyone to leave. The Star Hotel was in Newcastle which at the time was a very blue collar, steel and coal city. One thing you never do in Australia is cut off the beer. SO when the police did just that, there was a riot. It really was just an effect of the times. Low wages, poor working conditions, etc. The blue collar worker struggling to just pay the bills and then they cut off the beer. Silly mistake.
I remember having to drive through that riot, was a fun night, and even better pub, had the 3 bars where everyone tolerated each other, the front bar where the wharfies drank, the middle bar for the lgbti (this was back in the 80's) and the rear bar for everyone else.
melvin matthews Jackpot! I watched this because the name sounded familiar. I have many music reference books but no mention of them. I now remember them, so that's what happened. They outperformed the old Kinks and were dismissed. That sucks. I consider Jimmy Barnes the vocal "Thunder From Down Under". He is awesome. I learned of him thru INXS. Australia have given the world some of the best artists. I love INXS, Midnight Oil, John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes, Air Supply, Little River Band, the Bee Gees, Rick Springfield, Men At Work, Models, Olivia Newton John the list goes on. Thank You!
I wouldnt call them a pub band, they had to go out and do shows and perform unlike today where they go on TV shows and get overnight success/recognition. Its called putting in the hard yards which many people do not want to do these days, would you call AC/DC a pub band?
This is an Aussie band, no 4th of July over here. This is just classic Aussie rock, we only have 24 million people over her and we are a young country, this is good Aussie music just because it is!
G'Day, this is a great song, "Jimmy Barnes" is the soul of "Cold Chisel", and two of their best songs are "Khe Sahn" and "Working Class Man". I left home at 22, moved to Cairns in North Queensland. "Cold Chisel", were at their peak, at the same time I was."Working Class Man" showed scenes of sugar cane burning and harvesting from North Queensland.

The thing with aussies rock n roll bands your not a true aussie if you dont know all the words to certain songs. The bands and songs we like may not be well know in america or overseas. But to a lot of us aussies certain songs are the soundtrack to our lives. If your in a pub or just hanging with mates having a beer everyone knows the words we will all sing along. When recording our song in 1993, Chris the harmonica player wandered into our studio "zone" and gave some amazing feedback that lifted our spirits and left us starstruck. Chisel themselves are huge legends and have aged nicely. $0.02
At the risk of sounding like an old fart, music was better when it didn't matter when a musician was ugly as a hat full of arseholes. Cold Chisel/Jimmy Barnes is the ice that runs through your veins then turns to steel that pumps your heart full with ochre red liquid. A top drop if you're a vampire.

Brings back memories of my high school years... my faves of theirs are probably Forever Now and Flame Trees. Thinking on older Oz stuff, I'd love to hear your reaction to a band called Rose Tattoo - classic fun pub rock.
lovemyrainydays Have to agree with those two song choices from Chisel - love them too! Some Rose Tattoo would be great as well! One of my favourites is Bad Boy For Love. Another one, from 1987 was a song Angry Anderson did solo called Suddenly. So different to hear a ballad, as opposed to Rose Tattoo’s hard rock.
Guns and Roses were big fans of Rose Tattoo and count them as a big influence. They dragged them out of retirement to support them on an Australian tour a few years back.
The GREATEST Aussie Rock band. Unknown or under appreciated internationally. They have a number of songs that are unofficial national anthems. No pretense, no BS just straight at you and still delivering the business 47 years later. I first saw them in Adelaide in 1975 just after Jimmy Barnes joined and was an immediate convert. Not just elemental rock but great social comment and observation in many of Don Walker's lyrics. Like a fine wine or a classic car, never out of fashion or out of place.
Classic. One of my favourite songs of all time. First heard it as a kid playing my dad's records, loved it ever since. For me it embodies a working class man who dreams of kicking back in the country but is stuck in a factory job in a dead end town, his plans of being back in Bow River fading into fantasy as he's "pissing all his money up against the damn wall". Love Chisel. Thanks mate. Cheers from QLD, Oz.
The thing that made Cold Chisel so popular is apart from being dam good, they sung about everyday Australians and everyday situations which meant people could relate to their songs.

Cold Chisel are just the soundtrack to our lives, but l do think it's very difficult for a non Aussie to fully appreciate Aussie pub rock. It just really doesn't translate or compare well to anything else. Farnham is different, he has that broad appeal, but Chisel, no sorry, they're ours.
This is twenty years past the band's prime. The only time I was able to see Chisel live was 1983, on The Last Stand tour. When they broke up. .. The 1983 Bow River is the lads at the peak of their power. This is very good, but they're older, and struggling ever so slightly with those vocals... Just for your information sir. Cold Chisel broke up in 1983, and in spite of being offered massive amounts of money, they never took the bait. In 1997, just because they wanted to, they recorded The Last Wave Of Summer album. In 2003 when this was done they just decided they wanted to do a tour.... The balance off us, that in 1983 they had been playing 250-300 gigs a year for about ten years... it makes a difference. In 2012 they got together again and have since recorded more albums and done tours... the last album being recorded was Blood Moon in 2019. The bands peak is the trilogy of studio albums - East - Circus Animals and 20th Century, accented nicely by the two live sets, Swingshift and Barking Spiders live 1983. In recent years we have had the blessing of The Live Tapes series, with classic concerts on cd and dvd. I think you may like "It Ain't Wrong", which never even made it onto a studio album at the time. God bless brother
This song, apart from being a rocking tune worthy of eternal recognition, is about an average Joe, blue collar assembly worker. Specifically a Holden worker, who spends his working days dreaming of the next getaway to his favourite holiday spot by the river. There ain't nobody who can't relate to that. "I've been working hard, twelve hours a day. But the money I save won't buy my youth again." Actually, maybe there are a few people who can't relate haha
Cold Chisel were never political. They spoke directly to the heart of the working man. 'Cheap Wine' may be the greatest expression of that. And that's something Jimmy Barnes carried over to his solo career, with 'Working Class Man'.
Bow River is a Diamond Mine in the Kimberly in Western Australia. Top End is the North of Australia...Nothing there but outback and bush. Very Hot and Tropical Rain. Nothing to do or go but work 12 hours a day. Good Money that you Piss up on the Damn wall. Better than wasting your days working on the factory floor in the cities down south where u earn no money. But the Money you save won't buy your youth again. Next set of wheels (Car) and i will be Back in Bow River again.
If you want to go early Australia, try the psychedelic “come and feel the real thing“ sung by Russell Morris and written by John Young. It was a reaction to a Coca-Cola commercial that was global at the time.
Great, great song, gotta say though, they've done far better performances. Each time they do this song, it's different! They're masters of improvisation!

Love it...another great Aussie band. :)

But the money I save won't buy my youth again."
Actually, maybe there are a few people who can't relate haha

Cold Chisel were never political. They spoke directly to the heart of the working man. 'Cheap Wine' may be the greatest expression of that.
And that's something Jimmy Barnes carried over to his solo career, with 'Working Class Man'.
one of the worlds best bands ever.
Cold Chisel have several great songs, go to Spotify and hit random, just one after another.
National icons of Aussie rock - great song to react to...
My favourite Chisel song.
May I add, it was written in 1968 and recorded the following year. All of the video interpretations are subsequent to the original release.
sounds of my youth - sensational
It might be old Aussie music but it was the best. Bring back the pub scene.
Ian Moss - sensational. Watch his Matchbox album.
Ian Moss, lead guitar, Geargia on my mind.
This song is the soundtrack to my life
No pointless interruptions, thank you.
Jimmy Barnes from working class Elizabeth..
Ian Moss from the Alice..
Australia's great artists..
Aussie, Aussie....😘😘😘
I remember they played bow river at Narara and Tanalorn, wow!
Definitely my fave Chisel song. Awesome vocals
Thanks you for just listening to the song......great respect....nothing worse that dumb interruptions to a great song. Thank you.
Live performance is cool but the studio version is very cool.
That's a jam session

If you want to go early Australia, try the psychedelic “come and feel the real thing“ sung by Russell Morris and written by John Young. It was a reaction to a Coca-Cola commercial that was global at the time.
Aussie Best Kept Secret....Barnesie, Farnham...etc
Great, great song, gotta say though, they've done far better performances. Each time they do this song, it's different! They're masters of improvisation!

Chisel have been one of my favourite bands forever. This song comes from the Circus Animals album which is full of brilliant songs. Check out When The War Is Over & Hound Dog.
