The mighty Chisels. They took no prisoners. Went to the States in the 80’s and record executives tried to change their sound. The Chisels told them where to stick it and headed back to Australia and wrote a great song called “You Got Nothing I Want”.
Cold Chisel are indeed Australian. Cold Chisel really have two lead singers. Ian Moss on guitar, and Jimmy Barnes on mic (although sort of backup vocals in this song). I was in that crowd. This was the last song prior to the encore, which is probably why they all look so sweaty, and also why you see Jimmy walking off stage at the end. Although they have broken up and reformed a few times, this year they are performing their 50th year anniversary tour.
Chisel are pretty much the biggest thing ever hit Aussie stages. ACDC , Midnight Oil, Angels, INXS, Icehouse.. and Cold Chisel. Take any of these over pretty much anybody anywhere ever.
Many of Cold Chisel's songs are anthems in Australia. They are rock royalty in Australia. Brilliant musicians and song writers in their own right, combined were just genius. Ian Moss here on lead vocal and guitar but Jimmy Barnes is the vocal powerhouse. Ian Moss is a great player and Don Walker on keys is an amazing songwriter. Not sure why they didn't have more success overseas. Was not because of a lack of talent.
Brilliant band. They are hugely popular in Australia, and rightly so. The guy on backup vocals is actually their lead singer. He is my favourite artist and joined this band at 16 and a half years old in 1973. Ian Moss, the singer here, was previously their lead singer, but he asked the band to get another singer in so he could concentrate on playing guitar. As you can see here, he has an excellent voice too. They do share the role, but a highlight of their music is their harmonies and how tight the musicianship is. Don Walker is on keys, Phil Small on bass and Steve Prestwich on drums (RIP in 2011 🕊). They sing blues, soul, and rock, but they are known asa Pub rock band. I'm seeing them this October. I can barely wait.
@@kazz3956 Well, given Jimmy's early lifestyle, he was taking LSD at age 16 and that doesn't exactly leave the brain cells in pristine condition, his memory may be off. Documented facts clearly state that he was born 28/4/1956 and joined Cold Chisel in December 1973. That is after he had turned 17. In fact, the band formed as "Orange" in early 1973 and Jimmy would have been 16 and a half in late October 1972. So, impossible for him to have joined the band at age 16 and a half. None of us has perfect recollection of past events.
Aussie here, 57 years old. Grew up with Cold Chisel in my formative years and have never stopped listening to them. Saw them in many venues, pubs in their early days, too many concerts to name. Whenever I’d take a date out it would be Cold Chisel playing in the car whether she liked it or not! When the War is Over Flame Trees Saturday Night Breakfast at Sweethearts Khe Sahn Cheap Wine All songs you should cover. There’s a relentless thread of lost opportunities, lost love, melancholy, redemption and bitterness in their timeless songs. One of the greatest Aussie bands ever formed. If you ever happen to be in an Aussie Pub when Khe Sahn starts playing be prepared to hug and sing with your fellow man! Peace.
Cold Chisel's signature tune is Ke San, about a Vietnam Vet trying to deal with PTSD and any Australian male who grew up in the 70s and 80swill call it the Anthem of our generation.
Australia's most iconic rock band, formed in 1973, they split up a few times but are back touring this year. The classic line up is two British migrants (Jimmy Barnes and Steve Prestwich), three Australians (Don Walker, Ian Moss and Phil Small) ,with two of the original members leaving by 1975. The harmonica player, Dave Blight, only joined them for some concerts. All five band members wrote songs that were hits and there aren't many groups that can match that. Sadly, original drummer, Steve Prestwich, passed away in 2011. I first saw them play in 1975.
Not being born with a talent, doesn't mean you can't appreciate it. Appreciate honesty over arrogance. Great song, great band, glad you liked it. Go Aussie!!
Playing to a big crowd, with the heavy lighting on stage, the band might only see a few rows in front. Part of the magic that makes Cold Chisel so good is they give 110% on stage, you can see and hear them in the zone. I've never come close to playing to a crowd that big, but I understand the concept of just playing it safe or giving it your all.
Iconic Australian band. Ian Moss, who wrote the song is lead singer. Mostly, lead is associated with Jimmy Barnes, the other singer with the 'big' voice. All of them have had massive careers as musos and producers. Jimmy Barnes daughter, Mahalia Barnes is a great singer as well
Hey Mike, glad you liked the song. Great reaction, no bs and told like it is. I grew up with Chisel music in the 70's and 80's.....a bit like mothers milk. The screamer is an excellent singer (Jimmy Barnes) that you heard with John Farnham on 'When Something is Wrong with My Baby'. All the other comments so far on this one say it all so I won't clog up the page anymore. Look forward to more of your reactions, and also keen to look more at your music tastes.
Hey Buck - Cold Chisel were huge contemporaries of GenX Australians. Late 70s early 80s. You will see a lot of very emotional 40yo's in that crowd, suddenly thrown back in time to their high school days .... memories of house parties, and friends made and lost along the way. That's what you are seeing here.

Cold chisel started off playing rough little pubs. Jimmy ,the singer without the guitar was usually well and truly pissed(drunk) on stage. In the old days he'd have bottles of grog in version stages of consumption planted around the stage. They did their own thing and personified the Aussie attitudes legitimately.jimmy and one of the other band members used to get into fist fights and then continue drinking together.😊it was a better time but most people were fundamental decent. In Australia, the great Top End means something like the deep south in the US, but crocodiles instead of alligators. Tropical, hot and with a big wet season.
50 th Anniversary tour starting October 2024 , Cold Chisel formed in South Australia in 1973 , with 17-year-old Jimmy Barnes as the frontman , AC/DC also formed in the same year in Sydney Australia, Jimmy Barnes had a short stint with Fraternity when Bon Scott went to AC/DC . They broke up in 1983 and reformed in 1998 . Jimmy Barnes and Ian Moss had solo hits in those 15 years . Must agree Ian Moss doing Georgia at the final Cold Chisel last stand concert in Sydney in 1983
One of our newer, like for the past twenty years, performers is Guy Sebastian. He has become one of the best in Australia during that time. If you get a chance, have a listen to him. Either "Battle Scars" or "Before I Go" I guarantee you won't be disappointed. He was the orginal winner of the Aussie version of The Voice. Singer, songwriter musician. He is pretty bloody amazing. He carries the tradition of no BS Aussie musicians leading the way. Guy, like most Australian singers sounds best live.
On the stage fright, stage work is practice, like everything else. You rehearse and rehearse and rehearse and you might be nervous beforehand but once you’re up there the training and muscle memory takes over
One of Australia's greatest bands, up with AC/DC and The Angels. Ian Moss wrote this song and sings lead(he sings lead on a few songs and has since had a succesful solo career, he is brilliant), he grew up in Alice Spring, dead centre of the 'outback'. Bow River is a small community in the middle of the Northern Territory. Jimmy Barnes, the usual lead singer has had a life long battle with booze andoften played drunk, often swinging a bottle ov vodka on stage. I have seen then many times as CHisel and solo, but they are back for their 50 year tour and I'll down there again in November. Ready to rock. As commeted below, get on to 'Swingshift' the album, live in their prime, absolutely brilliant. or Mossy doing Georgia... WOW.
Very Australian. The keyboard player was a PhD physics student at the university I went to and I remember them when they began playing college dances. At their best a brilliant band though there was more to them than you see here. Ian Moss is the guitar player, Jimmy Barnes the main singer Don Walker the keyboard player and main songwriter. Some pretty wild shows now and then.
Cold Chisel: the most Aussie band Ever, - for me the best Aussie music happening was in 1970s & 80s. - got to check out Aussie "Pub Rock", Angels, Rose Tattoo, Divynals, Hunters & Collectors --- and if you like Country Music or rockin tracks with a good Twang (inspired & influenced by `Southern US sounds ), we in Australia have some great bands and artists playing top-grade highclass music
Cold Chisel iconic Australian band. Two lead singers, Ian Moss had a silky smooth voice and Jimmy Barnes had gritty soul in his voice. Ian Moss did a hit solo called "Tuckers Daughter" and Jimmy Barnes is currently working with Joe Bonamassa (USA) Their drummer Steve Prestwich wrote most of their songs such as "Flame Trees" from Britain
So true. We are fiercely protective of them all and anyone that says Jimmy Barnes (the lead singer taking harmonies on this track to lead guitarist Ian Moss on lead vocals for this song) screams have no idea about belting out a song. JB can sing the phone book and make it sound good.
Aussie musician here. I stated out with stage fright so bad i thought the crowd could see my legs shaking. After about 15 years i must've shaken it because the singer swears he's seen me playing while asleep. Some gigs, if your tired, its like falling asleep driving, you dont realise that you're asleep till you jump awake.
These guys started as young adults in the dirtiest of dive pubs trying to make a quid. Agonizingly working their way from dark humble beginnings to being outright legends and australian music royalty. They perfected their raw talent and even now in older age, they can still pack stadiums to max capacity and perform flawlessly to entertain their fans. Both On and Off the stage. This is a rabbit hole that will lead you to many other equal legends of their time. Music just isn't the same anymore. Pure Talent is overrated and not aspired to in any conceivable way by most modern singers and musicians.
Ive said it on another youtube channel, but it bears repeating. Its a real shame that Cold Chisel never made it big in America. Our American cousins would have loved them.
Chisel is very Aussie. Songs like Khe Sanh, Flame Trees, Saturday Night, When The War Is Over, to name just a few, were a big part of our culture... my teen years & beyond. Ian Moss (lead vocal on this) is an icon who isn't as well known as he should be. A true musical genius. Barnsey (Jimmy Barnes) was Scottish born, but came to Australia as a boy.
There you go my Texan friend, diggin' Aussie rock 'n talent. Suggest you check out Midnight Oil & the Black Sorrows especially "Chained to the Wheel".... Cheers from Sydney.
The singer without the guitar is Jimmy Barns. Tom Jones said the only singer he has ever been intimidated by on stage was Jimmy Barns. He has sutch a loud voice. Mightn’t be to everybody’s taste but world class loud it is. And yes thay are an Australian band
And he had a voice range of F2 - B5. I remember an anecdote that he shared about when singers were trying to record a tribute album to him, and people such as Axl Rose were saying that nobody could match his vocal range.
One of the best ever bands out of Australia and South Australia. You will find it hard to find better, still going and still awesome. The songs will live forever. Aussie Pub Rock at it's best. Mossy on lead vocals and the great Jimmy Barnes doing the back up vocals.
Cold Chisel are absolute superstars in Australia but never really took off overseas. They have the luxury of two great lead vocalists, both of whom have had successful solo careers. They are still going and have just released a new single a few days ago.
He's actually lucky to be alive had pain presenting as back problem for many years which surgery didnt fix then discovered heart probs and has recently had more than one successful yet ominous prodceedure
Cold Chisel is one of the best Aussie pub rock bands of all time! Although Jimmy is the nominal lead, this one is Mossy’s song so Ian is lead and Jimmy is back up. Yes, there is a difference between Aussie pub rock and your standard everyday rock!!! Pub rock songs are about everyday people and for the audience…songs to get them singing along and on their feet dancing to make a night out fun and enjoyable + get people talking about the bands they saw/heard, building a big following before getting (hopefully)signed and recording. Most standard rock is just usually about studios, albums and tours. Just about everyone in Australia knows the lyrics to their songs and they are belted out by the punters in pubs and clubs all around Aus (even over 40 years later) whenever the songs are played (live bands or recordings)! 😂❤ Jimmy and Ian are still recording as solo artists but Chisel gets back together again every now and then too. You really need to check out Chisel’s catalog…some phenomenal songs in there, way too many to name!
Mate! Cold Chisel (or the Chisels as we often refer to them here Down Under) is the most iconic Aussie band. Awesome story behind their formation and ups and downs of fame. Jimmy Barnes has the most recognizable voice ever and has grown into a most amazing human being. I highly recommend anyone who has seen this clip to check them out. Straight up good rock with a deep story behind every song.
There's two lead singers in the band. Ian Moss is the one on guitar, he has his own solo career as well. The second is Jimmy Barnes, and he too has his own career. The band formed/split/reformed/re-split you get the idea. So, there's three rabbit holes you can dive down from here. Enjoy a bit of Australian Culture.
A lot of Australian singers and groups, especial through the 70's and 80's, gained popularity in the pub(that would be bar for you) circuit. A lot of early artists and bands had to go overseas, in search of international exposure; so a majority of Australian music will be completely new to you, a real treasure trove.
They're a well-known AUSTRALIAN band. Ian Moss is the singer here. Please check out his stunning rendition of the American classic, 'Georgia'. It was not intended for this concert but what a gorgeous 'Georgia' ending to it !
How to start a fight in a pub in Australia: “I’ve never heard of Cold Chisel”

WOW.
I love it when a song is so epic is sounds like the band has troubling bringing it to an end
No, Walker wrote Flame Trees and most of their greatest songs.
In Oz, if you have a bad word to say about his band... keep you guard up.
So true. We are fiercely protective of them all and anyone that says Jimmy Barnes (the lead singer taking harmonies on this track to lead guitarist Ian Moss on lead vocals for this song) screams have no idea about belting out a song. JB can sing the phone book and make it sound good.
They were one Australias best rock n roll bands 👍🏻
Thanks for checking out some legends.
Aussie Aussie Aussie!!! Oi Oi Oi!
This band is legendary down here in Australia - it might interest you to know this band has reformed and is touring again right now
Ive said it on another youtube channel, but it bears repeating.
Best Australian Rock Band, Guitarist is Ian Moss, Lead Singer in none other than the legend Jimmy Barnes
I agree. I'm grooving on it here in Texas
Chisel was an awesome band, seen them live a number of times during the early 80's.
Lyrics so important. What everyone pines for - chucking in the job and hitting the road
First time I saw them was the late 70’s and they never let you down. Brilliant band
so f.....g good raw energy , great aussie sounds ,
There you go my Texan friend, diggin' Aussie rock 'n talent. Suggest you check out Midnight Oil & the Black Sorrows especially "Chained to the Wheel".... Cheers from Sydney.
Great reaction.
This song is an anthem here, and Chisel are royalty. This still gives me goosbumps.
Bow river is the song that made me a lifetime cold chisel fan.
Me too now
Yes Mate, Cold Chisel ARE PERFECTION, and they’re still playing live shows, I’m seeing them later this year in Adelaide Australia 🇦🇺
👍👍🤟
Aussie icon.
Well loved here mate.
Love the videos
Another great Aussie classic
Earlier live versions have way more energy - believe it or not.
Don't stress buddy your a cool dude 👍
I'm off to see them tomorrow night. It's their 50th anniversary as a band.
How can you watch that without your head nodding just a little bit…no movement. They rock..! You can help but jiggle on your seat
ha ha.. I was tapping my foot off camera. I am coming around, but I was very camera shy when I did this one.
@@SonofBuck-f7z Apologies , wasn’t meant as a criticism, just an observation. keep up the good work😊
Australia has 7 states and each produces a top band from time to time. Cold Chisel were originally from South Australia
Yea mate Aussie Convict legends , watch them hammer out ‘Wild thing’ as well. ,it’s the definition of hard rock.
Watch the entire “ringside gig” worth the time and gives a good idea of their range. Amazing band really……thanks for reacting
They're a well-known AUSTRALIAN band. Ian Moss is the singer here. Please check out his stunning rendition of the American classic, 'Georgia'. It was not intended for this concert but what a gorgeous 'Georgia' ending to it !
Happy and glad you enjoyed it. Love the USMC hanging on your wall. Regards.
This is one of the very best driving songs ever. Get a full tank of fuel, some new tyres and turn it up and enjoy the miles go by
Hot Diggity dawg you done got a baptism in fairdinkum Aussie rock music. Mossy is the absolute king of Aussie rock guitar and he can Sing.
One of my favourites from Cold Chisel… When the war is over.
A Kiwi perspective.
Love to see your great reaction. Another to react to is John Farnham, HELP Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Love from Australia.
Arguably the greatest Aussie band of all time. Certainly the best live act I’ve seen bar non.
2025 NewZealand Cold Chisel
