It is a song about someone stuck in the city of Adelaide in South Australia working in the auto industry "I don't want to see another engine line" and wanting to escape to the hot, wet and relatively empty north end of Australia ("the great top end") where Bow River is. Ian Moss was from the Northern Territory. Peace out.
for the Americans, Bow River is on the WA coast about 2700KM or 28 hr drive from Adelaide beautiful fishing and a simple place. Aussies loved to go to these places and recenter themselves. for some they worked killing jobs just so they can get back there on their holidays.
Love this song and especially this version. I just love Ian Moss' voice. It's so unique & unusual & compliments Jimmy's wonderfully. Listen to When the War is Over from the same concert. Ian Moss perfection! Grand reaction. 🙂
Cold Chisel are the GOAT!! It’s both guitar and harmonica and there are more than 3 of them. All brilliant musicians. He sings about going to Bow River for the weekend..... Mossy is up there with Jimmy. They compliment each other! Aussie Rock royalty....🇦🇺🙋♀️
When Aussie bands make it big overseas (AC/DC, INXS, Midnight Oil) they rarely come back to Australia to play. We've been so lucky to have Cold Chisel here for almost 50 years for Aussies to enjoy our favourite band. I've seen them multiple times - and loved every one of their concerts. It's good to see the rest of the world is starting to hear their awesomeness in these reaction videos now.
The instrumentals in this performance is insane combined with the deadly vocals of Mossy and Barnsey makes this an epic performance. Not only can Mossy sing but man his guitar skills are fire 🔥
Mossy is a bit like Stevie Ray Vaughn....play guitar too well and no one notices your singing. The other singer in this band is Don Walker. A literal rocket scientist (yes, I'm not exaggerating, he's a rocket scientist) you'll see him playing the grand piano in this clip. He also wrote about 90% of Chisel's music including this banger. Went on a road trip today and my partner put this on in the car and I found the damage done to my voice by podcasts and pandemic. Use to be able to match Jimmy note for note. Time to start singing again.
Early on they went to the states and were snubbed by the record execs they came home and releases You Got Nothing I Want as an eff you to the American market and the rest is history. If you haven’t reacted to the above track suggest you react to that next. Loved your reaction your eyes closed head bobbing silly grin on your face expression is exactly what they do to me every time! 😂So great to see you genuinely felt it right down to your toes!💕😎👍
Caro I don't really understand why they got treated like that but their story lives on you know. When the music hits your soul there's nothing you can do but to just feel it and enjoy. Music is our soundtrack to life.
@@CVTECK1 the reason they weren’t wanted by the American labels was that their sound didn’t fit the new wave and hair metal that was the up and coming sound in the US in the early 80s. Chisel was considered to be too different and probably a little outdated for American audiences. Funny thing is they have a lot in common with Springsteen and he obviously did very well for himself.

Same here - we are very lucky in Australia that we get to see these guys (and others) live. I once saw them play live under the pseudonym 'Barking Spiders' at the Armadale Hotel in Melbourne in the very early 1980s. The only other band I ever saw at the The Armadale was a band called Swannee - coincidentally led by John Swan - Barnesy's brother!
If you want to know why chisel never went to America, listen to 'Nothing I Want' which Jimmy Barnes wrote for the American Promoters they signed with who wanted them to modify their whole act to 'fit in' with early 80s American rock. Ain't no way jimmy was wearing spandex and cannons and re-recording the songs. They just wanted to get up and belt out the songs and get rotten drunk. They decided pretty early that they wouldn't bother with the US and made a good enough living in Australia and Europe. Kind of the same with Farnham although his was as much a family decision. It's a shame because they would have been pretty big I think.
As much as Jimmy is the front man of the band, Ian moss is the soul of the band . Not only is he one of the greatest guitar players in Aussie rock but also one of our greatest song writers
I'm going to respectfully disagree. I think that Don Walker (on keys) as songwriter is what really lifted Chisel from being a good band to a great one. (Yes, I know this song was Mossy)
Thats my mate Dave Blight, playing harmonica. Plays the best harmonica solo in Oz Rock.. Still lives and plays in my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia, where Cold Chisel are from. (in the middle, down the bottom haha)
Circus Animals is a great album, I got the cassette as a young teen in the mid 80's and it is still one of my favorites. The songs are brilliantly written and take you on a journey . 🇦🇺
I'm pretty sure that Ian Moss would never say he was a singer in the same calibre of Jimmy or John, but he's a fine singer in his own right. And an amazing guitarist.
Its like a town you want to leave but the first thing you know you are back in Bow river like the town I grow up in the 70s 80s Geraldton Western Australia working on the factory floor cray factory and getting a new set of wheels on the beast or hot rod and cruising the streets running a muck living it up letting your hair down good old Cold Chisel one of my favourites
The origins of Pub Rock is typically rock played by local Australian bands in past decades in small venues where they needed to be damn good and versatile with great showmanship and audience engagement - if they weren't great they got no further gigs - pretty cut-throat stuff booking-wise. And mostly no distance between the bands and the crowds - that kept thing honest, and real. The really great ones took this same realism and accessibility with them regardless of how big their venue's or audiences became. The ability of many great Australian pub rock artists to create hits with brilliant musical structure and lyrics that their audiences could immediately and deeply relate to was a big part of what made them so timeless.
Aussies are always incredibly hard workers, pushing ourselves to stupid levels that when it comes time for weekends and holidays that we religiously revere them. Everyone has their own preference of where they want to unwind. Be it mountains, rainforest, desert, coast, rivers, ocean. Moss obviously likes Bow River (there are actually two Bow Rivers and i think he is refering to the far northern one) where he can lean back and relax with a fishing rod on the banks in the shade and do sweet FA and relax. An old Little River Band (LRB) song called Cool Change is similar in story, and is an amazing listen. Its about working to the point of physical and mental Burn Out and just needing to escape to the place everyone feels is their peaceful place.
That brilliant harmonica player, David Blight, is not a band member, but always played for them at their live shows. A song they do that might be more up your alley, is one of my favourites off their first album One long day. And if you would like to hear mellow Jimmy, the last song on that album is Just how many times.
If you listen to You Got Nothing I Want from Cold Chisel, it's directed to American music producers. You asked why you hadn’t heard of Cold chisel? Or ‘ chisel to Aussies, because when they went to the US the record company treated them badly, Jimmy came home and wrote the song ‘You got nothing I want’ which is a great song but it is basically talking to the record execs. You should react to that …it is fabulous. Love your reactions x
Just think , you used to be able to see Cold Chisel, INXS, ACDC , John Farnham , in our Pubs . Thats where they learned their craft and why they are as good as they are. If you like kick ass rock look up the Baby Animals with Susie DeMachi up front or go old school and check out the Divinyls.
It was the content of their lyrics that set them against the US music executives ie pregnancy termination, Vietnam war and the damage done to innocent Australians at the hands of the industrial military machine. Then ask who controls the music industry, drug trade, birth control and the industrial military machine. The answer to those questions is also the reason why you’ve never heard of them.
There's no hierarchy, really, it's about what your ear wants at the time. Mossy's voice is smooth, Barnesy's is raw, but they harmonise so well and they choose the lead the songs need.

If you want to hear more of Ian Moss solo, look on You Tube for Ian's cover of "Georgia" live from the "Last Stand" concert. Truly amazing. Oh, and the reason the harmonica player doesn't run out of breath is that the sound that comes out is breath and air passing over a reed, and it makes that sound whether you are breathing out OR BREATHING IN. A very simple trick. Didgeridoo players need to be able to breathe in and out at the same time (a very difficult manoeuvre to learn). Bagpipe players inflate the bag and squeeze the air out constantly with their arms, refilling the bag as needed. It's more about breath technique than being able to hold your breath without passing out.
Don't know if you've ever played the harmonica, but you play it both on the breath in and out. That's why they can have it go for so long. There are special harmonicas you can buy that will only work on the out breath, usually they're for 'tuning' instruments or sounding a note for singers.
perfect version of a perfect song, thanks for the reaction :) PS I strongly recommend you pull up the lyrics and have a re-listen on your own time with them in front of you :)
Thanks Andy. After I do the reaction I always go back and listen with lyrics to understand more about the song. I just don't do that on the first listen because that's what reaction is for me. But I always go back
I'm old - I saw them live... and I bestow on you 'honorary Aussie' status. You understand... you feel it... you sense it! Now's your chance - research more Australian bands... Midnight Oil... The Saints... Mental as Anything... INXS. Just enjoy. Oh... and 'Skyhooks'... go big!
Yes that's a harmonica. But they've got it processed as if it was a nasty ass guitar. You've got that nice distortion overdrive and feedback straight from the swamp.
thank you for reacting to our great aussie artists i suggest trying i was only 19 by redgum, try a video that includes lyrics for this is an extremely emotional song about the vietnam war
One guy said how can I be doing review on music but can't tell if it's a harmonica or guitar lol. I'm not even doing review it's a reaction lol. But that's how good the harmonica player was that you had to listen closely to know that he was playing. Amazing

@@aussiekat6379 No True, You are 100% right there. But that doesn't mean that people haven't heard about them. It's more that Americans on the whole only look to their own country for entertainment. Look at your education system. Many A. don't even know where Aust. is! Nor can they name a single continent. it just proves that most A. live in a VERY small bubble. People in the music industry will know of them and many other bands from here. Others? Not so much.

The first thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again
The first thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again
The first thing you know I'll be
Back in Bow River
Again
Dave Blight took his to Memphis and the blues challenge, saw him off with Mick Kidd they blew some American minds.
Ian moss is the best guitarist i have ever seen.
This is a fantastic aussie song but it sounds even better live
Ian Miss is also a brilliant solo performer
Love mossy
You're a legend tekky baby! you are looking at some great stuff. it is a blast to watch your journey. cheers m8
Glad you enjoy it! i hope my Journey is a little bit close to what you felt. what a song and what a band!!!!!!!
Chisel is one of the best Aussie bands of all time,2nd only to acca dacca
bow river is a gospel song here in Australia , cheers Alister in OZ.
perfect version of a perfect song, thanks for the reaction :) PS I strongly recommend you pull up the lyrics and have a re-listen on your own time with them in front of you :)
Thanks Andy. After I do the reaction I always go back and listen with lyrics to understand more about the song. I just don't do that on the first listen because that's what reaction is for me. But I always go back
@@CVTECK1 of course 👍
Great reaction 💥
Aussies rule and rock!!
agreed
I'm old - I saw them live... and I bestow on you 'honorary Aussie' status. You understand... you feel it... you sense it!
Now's your chance - research more Australian bands... Midnight Oil... The Saints... Mental as Anything... INXS. Just enjoy. Oh... and 'Skyhooks'... go big!
Yes that's a harmonica. But they've got it processed as if it was a nasty ass guitar. You've got that nice distortion overdrive and feedback straight from the swamp.
You might like 'Saturday Night', the live version.
Growing up with this song, I can’t say I ever questioned the harmonica, but it has some extra distortion on it here I guess.
thank you for reacting to our great aussie artists i suggest trying i was only 19 by redgum, try a video that includes lyrics for this is an extremely emotional song about the vietnam war
Will do
I think it's Dave Blight on harmonica......
"You got nothing i want" by Cold Chisel explains the reason why they didn't take off in the USA. They were big in Germany though.
My order out the three Farnham, Barnsey, diesel, then moss
I won't argue that frost
Suggestions for other songs: Khe Sanh by Cold Chisel or You're the voice by John Farnham
Great song . I’m with you it’s always been hard for me to distinguish between the guitar and the harmonica.
One guy said how can I be doing review on music but can't tell if it's a harmonica or guitar lol. I'm not even doing review it's a reaction lol. But that's how good the harmonica player was that you had to listen closely to know that he was playing. Amazing
@@CVTECK1 no hate here ,only help
@@speedypete5445 your good speedy I appreciate you.
Download Cold Chisel album (East). Every track will leave you speachless
Whoever said that Mossy was third. NEVER!!
What do you mean Cold Chisel should be globally known...THEY ARE!!!
To some but a lot don’t know them but that’s ok they are discovering just how great they are through channels like these..😊👍🇦🇺plus Cold Chisel told America record companies to stick it because they want to all the money etc that’s where the song You Got Nothing I Want comes from! It’s a dig at them after they went over their. 😊
@@timbackster2910 umm don’t you mean their education system not ours (Australia)and as for the rest I have watch a lot of reactors from other counties and they have never heard of them so it just not Americans. And true a lot of Americans live in their bubble that they are it and don’t have clue that the rest of the world exits except those who have travel or education themselves. But these American reactors that are discovering our Australian music are getting the word out and that’s great.
@@aussiekat6379 What ever...
Well just because I didn't know who they are doesn't mean they're not globally. But like I said I never heard one song from AC/DC but I heard of them. Michael Jackson Bob Marley Beatles those are globally. Not one person from my circle of friends has ever heard of cold chisel Tim. Also I live in America but I'm not American I'm from Cabo Verde and I never heard of cold chisel so Tim you know who they are and how great these boys were but I don't think they are global.
The Last Stand Concert version is the best!
Ahhh. Toooo good.🤩
Jimmy grew up in Elizabeth north a few doors down from my Nanna mum uncles
Did you hear any music coming from the house like band practice 🤠
@@CVTECK1 I wasn't born yet they all knew each other as young kids my Nanna actually apprantly smacked barnseys bottom for being a little shit lol.my Nanna knew his mother

Is that David blight on harmonica?
David blight on a D harp
This is Australia.
I LOVE IT Jono!!!
"can't here what he is saying" blame the wireless headphones. But yeah gotta be on top of Mossy and Barnsy.
Have you seen Mossy doing Georgia yet?
Not yet Kathleen
Awesome! Nothing else to say.
Hey Notric. These boys are Amazing.
Whose the 3 blokes? Jimmy & Mossy are both lead singers but there's no third singer
A lot of that style of music was born in Pubs,, ( Drinking Bars)
