Peter Hook schools me on how to play Love Will Tear Us Apart, Manchester UK 7/01

- I was lucky enough to get to go to Manchester UK in summer '01 to interview New Order in advance of their "Get Ready" album. I was the last interview, and the band was preparing to tour with Moby's Area 2 festival, so instead of doing the interview at a hotel in Manchester, I got to drive out to the countryside where Stephen, the drummer, lived with family - and where the band, I discerned from the thump thump thumpa thumpa thump through the farmhouse walls as we rolled up past the grandpa in wellies and the sheepdog - rehearsing for the tour. Full interview clips to follow, but I did get a chance to play Hooky's bass and my favorite bassline - only to get schooled that I was in fact playing it wrong. Galaxy 500 had the same experience when they covered "Ceremony."
If you'd like to see more, let me know in the comments because I've got a ton of these things.
If i heard Peter Hook tell me "you're wrong" i'd fucking start to cry :-)
I know this comment is 8 years old but so would i
same here
@@denise7090 same
Yup, same here.
I'd cry for having the privelage of Hooky telling me "you're wrong". Who gets that chance in their life to have one of your "idols" correct you.....
I've never seen a bassist play the bass like an acoustic guitar. Awesome!
LEMMY
Ever see Lemmy play
I play bass lines with acoustic guitar. Why? Because I can't afford a real bass.
listen to morphine
@@simbakissa ibenez makes cheap acoustic guitars that are decent. i got mine for 150 bucks new
Mental note:- never play anything in front of the person that composed it, especially if it's on their rig.
Or do it so you can see them playing it privately for you ;)
That's the way I think and it has only let me down. Boldness is a virtue.
That's literally how most musicians join bands that have an opening lmao.
In other words, never meet your heroes.
@@kingpluto555 No. It'd be the biggest honor fo me thatr the guy who composed it took the time to show you how it was actually played. I would be over the moon.
“Oh man this is like a total privilege”
You and everyone else dude, absolutely magic moment.
UA-cam video with an honest title? Like for that alone.
Hooky is one of the most unsung bass players of all time.
He's absolutely brilliant live too
Agreed, he is incredible. A sound and a style completely unto himself.
he's one of the most iconic bassist alive!
Not in our house.
Can't sing worth shit though. He should get a singer when they tour.
That's BASSicaly the sound of New Order right there. When Hooky left, the sound went with him.
true. Without Hooky it isn't New Order
And yet, when Hooky left, New Order released their first great album since Technique. If Hooky leaving is what it took for New Order to make great music again, I'll begrudgingly take it. I have a soft spot for the dense and complex One True Passion, but Music Complete is better than any album by Revenge or Monaco.
Maybe I'd rather see Hooky live, but I'd rather listen to Barney and the crew actually make new music.
Actually, that’s BASSically the sound of Joy Division...
lazarus28 if you don’t appreciate “Get Ready”, you are missing the boat, period
New order aren't fit to polish JD shoes
All Joy Division songs are purely epic Peter Hook is the soul of the band
Totally agree man. For all his presence and flamboyance, his basslines really brought out the best in his band mates.
Curtis was the soul, Hook was the beating heart
@@stupidhandles Yep
Peter hook was the heart, Ian was the soul.
“Heart and Soul, one will burn”
I love how he slowed down at the end to show him exactly how to do it. That Hook tone is unmistakable.
His bass lines are insane, especially the way he plays everything so high on the fretboard.
Kevan B it’s because they had crap equipment and Hooky couldn’t hear himself over the guitar and drums, so he started playing high on the neck and chords
The plus side was that they automatically created a new sound, as well as always sounding like they had two guitars and bassist in the band
Also, the fact he played so high enabled him to use lower strings as drones
@@NoxiousRob what is drone?
@@henrydauseb2844 a drone is when you play an open string with a fretted note below it. So one note is always being played or “droning” in the sound
@@tombstoneharrystudios584 indeed, the Hondo II ric copy he was using was, by his own admission, a pile of crap that didn't play right. The rest of the world is all the more better for it though lol.
Love how Hooky dropped the hammer at the first sign of it being wrong (0:42) but did it in such a way that he didn't seem like a jerk about it.
That would have been through the respect that the OP had already garnered.
He may be wrong Peter BUT that is a damn good attempt on a right handed guitar by a left handed guitarist!
Thanks Peter, love your bass playing, absolutely amazing sounds, thanks for years of super music...
The notes were correct he just played them in a different position.
Peter said you can have your tongue back now! 😛
all the chorus and flange. because new order uses a lot of synthesized bass, and ian curtis back in the joy division days liked the bass to carry the melody so he didn't have to, hook has turned into this sort of guitar-bassist more than a bass-guitarist. thanks for watching
Hook said somewhere with the cruddy amps they had to start with he could clearly hear the bass only on the high end, and that's how his style started
Absolutely! Well said!
Thank you for Majesty Crush ❤. I'm from Russia and i like yours music!!
Also dude you play left handed, strumming without pick and with no strap? Dood, hardcore.
yeah, the strings aren't even reversed
Are the strings upside down to??
Guessing this is ironic because of your name but if not that's what he means by the strings aren't reversed
the mok yeah because peter hook is right handed and it’s his bass
Mikael Salander whats up with non nylon string players and picks? him strumming without a pick isnt impressive
Hearing Hook play on the new Gorillaz track made me feel nostalgic for New Order. His sound really is something unique.
the guys reaction when he hears Hooky's trademark tone, brilliant :)
This is AWESOME. What a great experience that must've been! Also, your upside-down lefty version was very impressive, even if Hooky had to correct you on the finer points.
Nik Farr Fuck yes
Peter Hook had always been the John entwhistle of new wave
Completely agree
Left handed on a right handed bass makes it sound fantastic - strumming from higher to lower strings creates an incredible depth or better width of sound
Fuckin underrated is hooky. Quality bass player
What a powerful and iconic bassline dude. I get chills everytime I listen to it.
It never gets any less impactful
Always comes across as generous, humble and down to earth. Genius bassist.
0:13 that sound everyone makes when they hear Hook start playing
WROOOOONNGG!!!
wrong? it's peter hook!!!
Cédric Lindecker did you watch the video?
@@cedriclindecker1990 He was repeating what Peter Hook said.
If I ever wanted to see someone mend broken fences, those two gentlemen would HAVE TO BE AT THE TOP OF MY LIST! If miracles truly exist, please let this happen within my lifespan!
Peter Hook has never been a technical bassplayer, but he created his bass language and style. Anyway, for me the best postpunk new wave bassplayers are, beyond to Peter Hook, Derek Forbes of Simple Minds (period 79-82) , John Taylor of Duran Duran (the basslines of DD and Rio are fantastic), Simon Gallup of The Cure, Mick Karn of Japan and Paul Gardiner of Gary Numan/Tubeway Army too. I was forgetting Steven Severin of Siouxsie and The Banshess.
Jez Kerr of A Certain Ratio?
And damn...i forgot JJ Burnel of The Stranglers!!!
I'm agree with you but I need to add Gianni Maroccolo of Litfiba. See some his bassline on youtube
Parli a un italiano, caro amico. Gianni Maroccolo è una leggenda!!!
CatoMinor a hahaha, allora non ti insegno niente :-)
This is probably my favorite video on UA-cam
Oh my gosh thank you so much - mine too obviously
He’s one of my favourite bass players if not the favourite.
One of the most innovative bass players.
He's basically playing his bass like a dulcimer. JD songs were always bass driven, the guitar was merely an overlay to the bass.
Interesting musical insight. Yeah, I see where you are coming from on that, thanks.
I think a lot of post punk music is like that. Synths and bass drive the song.
@alienvomitsex Yeah but mainly bass guitars because they’re a staple instrument and every band needs a bassist. Most post-punk bands mainly use synths just to add texture and atmosphere.
like the Smiths
Now I have to disagree. The guitar is just as integral, it's just that there's more people playing guitar similar to the way Barney plays his.
an honor to be schooled by the master
Hook very underrated bassist! Truely a badass.
It's nice seeing them together ❤
Back when Bernard & Peter were friends.......c'mon lads, make up already & tour.Who ever agrees give me a thumb's up !
I cannot heart this sentiment enough!
I have to believe Hooky when he says Bernard became a bit big-headed, but they've reconciled before, though it's New Order's decision to let him in. Besides, if you asked me if I wanted to see New Order or Peter Hook and The Light, I'd choose The Light any day of the week, great band with a spectacular atmosphere and energy.
That video looks about 15yrs ago mabe more
@@sorryrocco july of 2001 as stated in the title.
@@squiremuldoon5462 i must be a thick basard not reading that
Subtleties - Note just after the 1:03 mark (after the open D to A chord part), when he does the A chord/drone strum: The first two eight notes are downstrokes, the rest are up/down. Repeat.
Makes all the different in the world.
I saw Peter Hook this year total privilege singing love will tear us apart have loved Joy Division and New Order forever but missed Mr Sumner...xxx
Wedding gift from my wife...Tickets to Hooky in Edinburgh, Scotland at Queens Hall...maybe 500 people...2nd day of our Honeymoon....Sooo..amazing...
Video just taught me this line, thanks
It’s funny- me too, but I’ve seen a vid of flea playing it like I did. Hooky has that punk rock off-ness sometimes that’s all him.
One of my favorite songs in my life.I carry it with me wherever I go.
Super!!
Thats just beyond beautiful.
Hearing their music takes me back to a time when life was vibrant and easy. Love Captain Hooks bass style
He is a true legend
What a GREAT ,MELODIC BASS LINE !
A means to an end has got several different compositions of the bass thats why i luv hookys bass playing he makes it look so easy just as what stephen does with the drumming.
Completely agree.
I would love to see Peter tour with new order just one more time
This is beyond legendary!
HOW SWEET IS THAT
If this was with me I'd start crying, god damned
this bass line is magic!!
when he starts playing it's immediately like magic
More, please!
I love when he turns the rig on at 0:13. So powerful!
Peter Hook is a genius - Period!
Awesome, Peter, Thank you so much for sharing such a jewel wit us. You are my hero!!!
That’s real music!!!!!
WOW this is something extremely cool. Thank you for sharing!!!
Goosebumps hearing Hooky play
Sweet! Bernard hangin' 'round too - Cool.
Love hooky. One of the best !
Hooky. Amazing!
I give you major credit for playing it upside down!
Love will tear us apart, agaiiin
Awesome!
Omg it took me so long to find this video again so happy I found it
I'm getting a bass yesterday! What an inspiration! 👏
I think I finally understand Joy Divisions's sound. The bass is front and center. Not being a musician myself I didn't notice it but now I get it.
1:28 the look my cat gives me when I shout to him
This video is an all time classic. I always come back to it.
That was so good i had to watch it twice.
Thank you. It’s a very important bit of education on the wit and heart of Joy Division and New Order.
Nice footage of the best song ever written. Nice to see Peter being accommodating.
Thanks for sharing.
What a tune 👌!!!
Thank you so much, I learned how to play this bass line exactly from your video. It really is a privilege to learn directly from Peter Hook!
What a difference its not just technique its as though the instrument absorbs the players soul essence and radiates it back outward through the sound
Now that is awesome!
Mitic Mr Hook !
God bless hooky.
INCREÍBLE!!!!
Post more of these man!!
Hooky...destroyer of dreams
Multi Strickland dreams never end
that was amazing
Brilliant love that song and riff
Love it and interested in seeing more.
Love that riff!!!!!!
Yes more!
Awesome moment
PH - LEGEND !!!
Brilliant Hooky!
That moment when you realise you’ve been playing it wrong for years. The simultaneous horror and the thrill of finally learning it properly.
Its awesome that pete plays it like i always thought it was played
Totallly AWESOME! That is sooo cool.
Of note: he drones D then A, NOT G.
Thanks!
So Cool !
Hooky still is his today! Legend.
Dunno why I love this video so much. Hooky is king!
Wow, thanks for sharing this! I ❤️ Hooky too! And miss him being a part of New Order... ☹️
that was awesome
Amazing
You are quite right. This was most definitely an honor and privilege. I am sure he was quite touched!
Thank you. The perspective I got
From them is that they thought of new order as a shadow of joy division and would
Work with producers and take risks with technology to almost dare themselves to succeed or fail. Really humble.
I'd be beside myself to get a personal Masterclass from Hooky 😍
What a cool experience!
Val Ouimette humbling but perfectly so!
Wow. That is amazing!!! You should post all you have. Would love to see more! Thanks for uploading.
