listen...i'm 43...i grew up playing DOTC on nes. I DID NOT know ...until just now....there was a part 2. I'm FREAKING OUT! bro i can't wait to get fat for an hour watching this. GOOD KNIGHT!!!
So more like an upgrade than a sequel. I vaguely recall playing this before or seeing it played. I recall the idea of raising a ransom to free King Richard. Of course this differs from the first game where the King is assassinated at the start(not actually named King Richard). In the first game you were literally defending the crown, whereas this time you're defending the king. I realize now that the idea of ransoming Richard from Leopold was in the 1952 Ivanhoe film and I think in the original book(and apparently based on fact). I like the British narrator. Interestingly the music, as well as the graphics, was done by Jim Sachs from the first game. The first game's music was by Jim Cuomo who was previously in bands like Fireballet and Mormos.
Geoffrey Longsword is the only character I can play because his jousting is good and swordplay is great. He is the only one can outmaneuver all the Normans.
@Jonathan Harrison have you watched this video or haven't you? I've played the 1986 version this is the second iteration the graphics are higher resolution and there's a voice over. It sounds as if its part of the game. Have you taken your meds or did you just not bother to watch the video?
DEFENDER OF THE CROWN II may look great, but i'm still a big retrospective fan of the original DEFENDER OF THE CROWN on the Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 😺👍🕹️.
This is what DOTC should have looked like in the first place (minus speech/fancy sound/fancy animations aso and some "trimming" done ofcourse) I wouldn't have minded back then to pay extra if it had come on four disks instead of two :) The CDTV-version was pretty much "Defender of the Crown +" and not much "Defender of the Crown II". Nice never the less 🙂
It was 1986 and the graphics on the ST/amiga on DOTC were on another planet compared to any other game or system. Not sure what the expectations are if something is state of the art at the time. The first game is so much better than this.
Wilfred of Ivanhoe was unbeatable at the joust and his father Cedric would never have sullied himself with the Norman affectation of jousting on horseback. That being said I think the designers of this game should have chosen another goal. Once you take all the land and castles you could pretty much get twenty thousand pounds anywhere. Seems pointless to continue once you've taken all of England. Unless the French join in this game somewhere.
I am 15 min in this video. Two things I noticed. a) Jousting appears much easier and it looks like broken if you can so easily take all these territories like that. b) Did I miss the part where the player bought armies? Or does the game automatically buying armies for the player?
please realize that most of these gameplay videos on youtube are done by guys who are very good at the game or they are cheating with emulator and savestates, etc.
@@kangarht Why would anyone cheat on a strategy game? It didn't even cross my mind. I play strategy games since 1987, I never cheated once in a strategy game.
@@Trusteft youtube gameplay videos are like this, this is not played for fun, but for the sake of the video. if you know the game very well you can always see that they are too good, for how hard the game really is like in your case.
They should have called it Deluxe Edition or something. Because it only has better gfx and audio then the CDTV edition. It's not really a sequel to the first game in any way. Therefore its a bit confusing to call it DotC II. 🤔
this version is very bad and buggy, i conquered the whole territory but i could not buy any more soldiers and also would not make enough money for the newly introduced ransom. the graphics are not improved at all, except the voice acting the version just got worse. definitely stick with the original amiga or atari versions, they are better.
A sequel, are you kidding me. Well lets hope it doesnt ruin the first one, by going the extra mile. Never had Amiga CD32. My mate had one. I remember rise of the robots
Weird, the others are barely active at all?! Not even buying a home army?! And you can joust your way to their castles as well in this version?? Another big change to see opponents pop back on the map repeatedly, after they would have been wiped out in the other versions we played.
you can download it here: gamesnostalgia.com/game/defender-of-the-crown-ii but it is not worth the download imo, the game is worse than the original. seems like a rushed release.
I like some of the graphical improvements, but the game doesn't seem all that rewarding in the end and it seems really boring after a while. It also takes too long to achieve your ultimate goal and the game hardly seems to even acknowledge your wife at all. Whereas in the original, you'd at least see her picture next to yours.
For some reason, Jim Sachs didn't like the original music (including the very iconic theme) and re-did them all himself. It would have been a much better result if he had just remastered the original's musical score.
My initial thoughts as well but then I checked... The pound is the world's oldest currency still in use. It was used already in Anglo-Saxon England, so this is actually correct. 😮
There's a recently released Atari Jaguar version of Defender of the Crown that appears to have some (all?) of the C64 enhancements, but with graphics at least as good as DotC1 on the Amiga. Yes, people are still commercially releasing new Atari Jaguar games! I just ordered it and am excited to play it. That version of the game even supports using an Amiga mouse with the Atari Jaguar, interestingly.
Sad their call it Defender of the Crown II their could just have give a subtitle Lionheart or Braveheart sad it didt have a multiplayer version it will have more joy to it
Amazing graphics - I think I like them more than in today's games

I had a cd tv. Never played defender on it though. Looks good.

Amazing for 1993. The commodore amiga was truly underrated!

The only thing missing from this game is the original music.
never knew part 2 existed. It looks identical to part 1 but improved graphics....
Different gameplay. You have to get money to pay the ransom for the King.

It's an Amiga CD32/CDTV exclusive. In my opinion the best version of DotC. Produced by Jim Sachs.
It did not sell well, not due to the game but sales of the console at that particular time.
