Great video, two of the best battling it out on a circuit, albeit in a very unconventional way ;-) I was fortunate enough to drive a VW GTi TCR road car back to back with their race car TCR at Portimão earlier this year. Surprisingly once rolling there was very little in it between them in a straight line, the aero drag from the race car slowed it down over 100mph along the big straights, but under braking and anywhere in the corners the slick tyre clad race car was on another level all together.
Battle being the proverbial word there. The TCR car was trying to pass the road car like being stuck behind a Sunday school teacher, albeit in the corners like you said.
Very needed video. In general, the EVO staff passion is admirable. The only thing I wish you did and you don't is say/write something more for us unlearned motorists who may want to buy a sporty, gritty car without really being sports drivers. For instance when you say the Fiesta ST "quite soon reaches its grip limits" you could add that for six-tenth drivers it will never reach its grip limits :), and six-tenths drivers would have this (this kind) of info from following you without the need to fetch it elsewhere.
I think you two guys are among the very best motoring journos but jeez I've absolutely had it with cars going round a track. It's so BOOORRRRIIIIINNNNNNGGG!.
I was wondering where Mr. Sutcliffe went. BOOM! He's back! I think it woulda been MUCH more of a better promo if Hyundai had added a 3rd car: a totally modified road car with ECU tune & sick aero, in order to show off what the road car can BE. THAT would be a sales pitch.
Weird race. The TCR is awesome. Great first effort from Hyundai on the road car though. Given the race car is custom spec etc, I do feel you could have at least put racing tires on the I30N and maybe even had one with a Stage 1 tune. Cool though.
I'm going to be a little bold......I've had enough of the likes of Shmee and Mr JWW and would like to see EVO etc have more of the market. P.S I'm not talking about people like Joe Achilles.
Well EVO need to start driving round in circles in london looking "cool" ( which they don't btw ) and shouting chaos for that to happen. I gave up ages ago and those type of channels tbh. JWW and Shmee are just toff's IMO
just give the regular hyundai N a stage 2 remap put some kw's under it and upgraded ebc brakes and pads and you have a car that will hang with this tcr all day long for maybe 4000euro's more than the standard car costs with all luxery still inside.
@@mbardos the weight difference wil still be there but than again put some lightweight recaro's in there and lightweight wheels and the difference in performance will be minimal, definitely if you keep the price difference in mind and you still get a fully functional interior, nice comfy seats even with recaro's (i have recaro poles myself), aircon, radio ect.
@@swansmeister the difference was 300kgs... no Recaros or wheels will save that much. You will have to throw out rear seats, stereo, AC, sound insulation, everything...
An Epic race but not quite a fair one in my books because the race car has pretty much everything better in terms of acceleration, brakes..than the road car. However I still maintain what I think about the road i30N. Its simply mindblowingly fantastic😍😉 that I only wish that one day I can get a crack at it as the N is not available in my country sadly😔
Dis I miss the bit saying "includes paid promotion"? Surprised they suggest that its a focussed hot hatch ket alone o e of the quickest. I did the Nth degree experience day and it's a decent car but really I couldn't find it's USP. A bit plain and average in my opinion.
The i30N has been on my radar since it came out. Now that there are 2nd hand cars for a reasonable price I just have to have one. Problem is at the moment I drive an automatic BMW with a 3.0 6 cylinder without a turbo and rear wheel drive. Will it be a step back to a fwd 2 liter with turbo and manual transmission?
tubejorrit It'll be different - whether it's a step back or forward is up to you, but you won't know till you drive one (make sure you test the Performance model, not the cooking version). Either way, the days when Hyundai made cheap tat (or safe, average cars) are long gone. Have you tried a Kia Stinger GT?
If Hyundai wants to get serious they need to reinforced the bottom end of the engine. Close the deck, 4 bolts per main or bed plate girdle with mains, good oil flow (oil pump). If you can't have 4 bolts per main leave space to machine another two bolts per main.
@@Nathancl22 nah, not really. The GTI is more of a contender for the i30N in my opinion. Both have LSD, manual and power&torque in the same ballpark. The R has Haldex AWD, DSG and more BHP/torque. And it's better on track. I'm curious how the R holds up to the TCR.
Say what you may but if there is a car company that is completely reinventing itself from the ground up,it's HYUNDAI,about 10,15 yrs ago here in Australia this was like those rubbish communist lada's in Russia! But now i can't help but admire their Renaissance!Sure its no Bima,Merc or even Toyota but with a 7yr warranty they know what them up to,Give them about 5-10yrs and you will be blown away.
pops and bangs TCR belongs to the GTI not Hyundai or any other car company. The Mk8 will gap your i30n that's for sure. I like i30n's but I like my car more and especially the GTI family.
Given the climate emergency, should we still be producing these ? The obvious answer is no, especially when electric cars costs similar money and have bags of torque on tap . They’re fun.
I30N, what a masterpiece of a car.
That TCR looks stunning. I'd have that as a road car.
Welcome back Mr. Sutcliffe
That was such a weird race. No idea where the cars were, or on what lap they were on. Not sure what the point was.
@ We don't know what lap they are on, not how many total laps.
Meaden and Sutcliffe in a video, more of these please!

I love the i30 N but when I saw the Veloster N....wow!! What a masterpiece... !
aren't they the same?
@@DonLee1980 No. The Veloster is one model and i30 another model. Same engine but different cars
and then you have the i20n also. The one that races in the WRC i think is better looking than the i30n tcr.

Valid point indeed
2:40 Michelisz became the WTCR World Champion in that year 2 months later with the Hyundai i30N TCR. He didn't know it yet.
this is by far one of my favourite videos !

glad to Mr Sutcliffe 😁
Nice filming and editing 😍
Sutcliffe! Where have you been
I thought that they were going to put slicks on the road car. That would be so much different.
Mihelisz Norbi a legjobb!🇭🇺
Wait, so a road car is completely different from a race car?
Holy shit.
Good job pandering
That was an exciting race good to see and both beautiful cars 🚙
Evo used to have one of the very best Youtibe channels. Together, Meaden and Sutcliffe could bring it back to relevance
The dogbox transmission on the race car sounds so good. Great video.
Both cars are still really fast!!!!
i30N a milestone for Hyundai
