  • Sylvester Stallone stuck to his guns when he was trying to sell the screenplay for "Rocky," refusing to give it up unless he was given the title role, even though he says was a "terrible choice."

@Huma17 if it wasn't for that lip thing he would be respected far more than he is now. What's weird is he got this far in spite of it. He's by no measure dumb, quite the opposite, he knows his craft. More than most actors I'd say given his experience as screenwriter and director. Whatever, at the end of the day it's your opinion, it's terrible, but it's yours.

@weelewisdgfc That's why he knew it was a perfect role for himself, it's certainly not as if he went way out on a limb or anything. I mean, put into perspective, he didn't write a role based on the life of Cockney football player, you know? 😉

I know Stallone is being self depreciating here, but he WAS Rocky, just like Brando was the Godfather. Nobody else could have played it better. He knew the character inside and out because he created him. Add to that his looks, his mannerisms, his speech, his acting style (yes, the man could act, and was quite good) everything.....he was perfect.

In many ways, the fact that he wasn't a good looking and immediately charismatic A-Lister but more of a plain looking guy who mostly mumbled his lines and didn't really show that many emotions, was the point of Rocky. As he said, at first Rocky looks like a bruiser and not much else, but the more we get to know him in the film, the more we see that he has so much heart and personality.

The studios had originally wanted more established leading men such as Burt Reynolds, James Caan, and Ryan O' Neill to play "Rocky Balboa". Lucky for us, Sylvester Stallone had stuck by his guns and insisted that he play the title role that he had created and had made famous for a while now and the rest as they say is pretty much history.

I still have the scrapbook I made filled with headlines and photos of SLY when I was only 10. Im 20 years younger and only YOU, the Indiana Jones character and my Father have been my Mentors in life for various reasons. At 10 years old it was because you were a badass action star. As I grew older it developed into the fact that you were and still are clearly a man of Faith and an Amazing Father of 3 incredible daughters who love and admire their DAD. I only Fathered One. You the Man SLY.
    ...AND THANK YOU.

2:51 but those are EXACTLY the points that made Rocky the character of Rocky so goddamn believable. No offense to Burn Reynolds or Ryan O'Neal, but those two are good looking people. They look like actor fighters, but they don't look like actual fighters, if you know what I mean. Stallone, he just had the look of a fighter - that crooked look on his face actually gave the impression that he was a boxer who kind of stunk at boxing and spent more time taking shots than giving them. His face looked like it had taken countless blows over the years. And that fucking sold it. It was exactly what Rocky needed. And that's why Stallone was perfect for the role. God am I glad that things worked out as well as they did for this guy.
