The average Komodo Dragon can run twice as fast as the average human. Out in the open like that if it decided to go after you I really don't see how you could escape. My guess is that the guide would just trip you up with the stick and then get away while it was feeding.

The rangers feed the dragons table scraps down at the ranger station below. That guy just followed them up the trail because he knows that ranger. There's always a bunch of them down by the buildings. The rest of the island is fairly devoid of them. The other Indonesian islands had a number of them as well, but the locals ate them. So this little island and the neighboring ones are the only place left where they are "common" in the wild.

I was on a hike near horse tail falls in Mexico with my boyfriend back in the early 80s. Out in the middle of nowhere we came across this huge hacienda with a stone gate at the entrance of a long road to the actual house. Chained to this gate was a Komodo Dragon! Scared the livin' hell out of us! He had just enough chain length to protect the entrance from people walking up to the house passed this gate. (Looking back now, I'm wondering in this was some sort of drug lord estate.) Even though this guy was chained up, just seeing this thing was horrifying! We didn't get too close and left pretty quickly. I guess that was the idea.

Komodo dragons will stalk anything that might be appetising, and which might exhibit signs of being catchable.
If the dragon had eaten fairly recently, it would be less compelled towards food, however there is never any doubt that these are highly aggressive animals.
Anybody who imagines they have any gentle intent need only see the way they kill each other. They are unpleasant deeply motivated predators, and I'm always amazed at those who refer to them as elegant or beautiful.
The animal, from any angle, is largely repulsive to look at, as most reptiles evolved to have good armour and to appear immediately terrifying to prey.
I am equally fascinated and disgusted by them. Horrible creatures.

I read a story about a group that was walking out in the country side. After a while they noticed one of the people was not around. They went back to look for him, and only found his torn up shirt. Yep, a Komodo dragon sneaked up, jumped him, killed him before he could scream, and did something with him, leaving bits of his red shirt behind I guess he got eaten. Not sure if this story was true, but it was mentioned where I read it, to inform people how dangerous and sneaky Komodo dragons were and to take caution while being around them or where they lived.

Not really the way they operate. They are more than capable of grabbing hold of s prey item and ripping it apart rite there and then . Suggest you watch them grab a monkey pin it ,snap it's spine then swallow it whole ALIVE ... Or pull a baby buffalo away from its partners and rip it apart in front of them . So yes with bigger animals ie adult buffalo etc they bite then follow and eat it from the back legs when it weakens. But the animals they can overpower they won't wait they will rip it apart rite there and then ... They brutal asf in all their methods....

It is a strangely elegant creature, and I am glad it was a non-violent encounter. I wouldn't want to see the person or the dragon harmed. I once lived in an area where there very large iguanas all over the place (outside the USA) and they were not fearful of humans, but not particularly aggressive either. They were also protected and the fine for harming one was steep. I was delivering some items, and when I returned, one had taken refuge under my vehicle behind the front wheel. Shooing him off didn't work, as he just hissed back. I had to sit there for almost an hour until he moved on. Try telling your boss a story like that when he asks why you took so long to deliver a package.

St. Thomas Virgin Islands ?? I worked on a cruise ship that sailed to st. Thomas weekly, I would take goodies from the ship and go to Lime Tree beach to feed the sea iguanas. They loved the snacks I brought them every week. They knew who I was and immediately came to me and surrounded me waiting patiently for snacks. Cereals, veggies and fruit. Yes, they looked forward to my arrival. Some came down from the tress, they must have facial recognition. I called to them in a high pitched voice, I even sang to them. They ate & listened. Some of them would put their little foot on my knee as if to thank me !!!😊😊😊 iguanas are very interesting.

it will take time for the anti coagulants in its saliva to kill you from just one bite. It's saliva makes you bleed to death slowly but I guess it really depends on the size of the bite and where it gets you. I would imagine applying a tourniquet on a limb that gets bit would buy you time. If you make it to a hospital and get medical attention the effects of the anti coagulants can be stopped.
