  • This is an old video where two wolves (dire wolves?) are shown on tape (it was tape back then folks) and shared for reaction purposes to see what you think of these amazing beasts - they are not horses by the way!

For everyone worrying about the dog in the first video: The dog lived! I've read the story. The owner was standing by with a shot gun, the dog ran after the wolf because it had been hanging around. She was protecting the property (which is where this took place). The wolf bit her in the back end and threw her up in the air. The owner shot his gun into the air and the wolf ran off. The dog had some wounds but she healed.
EDIT: because of all the comments, this happened in Saskatchewan, Canada. You can easily google it and many articles will come up with quotes from the owner saying exactly what I said in this comment.

I believe Timberwolf is the largest remaining subspecies of grey wolves. Almost any wolf in North America - outside the arctic region - will be a timberwolf. Red wolf (another grey wolf subspecies) is all but extinct. The Eurasian wolf is another Grey Wolf subspecies. Basically, all dogs, wolves, coyotes, dingoes, and jackals are the same species, 'Canis lupus'. It's crazy, right? I'm fairly sure they can all interbreed - maybe not jackals but the rest can for sure.

Or just one deafening bang and the wolf buggers off with it's tail between it's legs posthaste. @@swayzy762 that is the more common perception of dogs, tools to be used and broken. While I didn't specify this, which is my bad, in this case the dog represents anything that you would try to protect and the wolf a predator or other threat that might attack. Did you hear about the recent case in Seattle territory where a guy woke up to find a cougar in his kitchen? We are not helping ourselves by encroaching on predators territory and disarming ourselves at the same time. Plus predators aren't even always the worse. I don't think we have any hyper aggressive prey animals in the US, but cape buffaloes and hippos in Africa kill more then lions, hyenas, venomous snakes, crocodiles, hell everything. Nature is scary and we don't have fangs or claws or armored hides, we only have our brains and tool making abilities.
On your specific comment though, the dog was doing exactly it's job and I never heard the owner even try to call it off. In my mind that creates a moral obligation to protect your proverbial brother in arms, the dog in this case. Thanks for your reply, my original comment was a little off topic.

Wolf size typically depends on their diet in the wild. Wolves that typically get huge usually eat a diet that heavily consist of Elk and Bison. The meat in those animals have clyglocengens that builds muscle in the wolf at a much faster rate then typical sized wolves that feed on deer, gazelles, or smaller aquatic forest animals such as fish. clyglocengens in animals is identical to creatine that helps in strength and muscle building in humans by the way.

I actually might know an explanation for this. Wolf-dog hybrids are typically much larger than either parent, because of a genetic phenomenon called heterosis. Black coloration is usually an indicator of domestic dog ancestry, because it's exceptionally rare in full-blooded wolves.

When I saw the first 'wolf' video, what stuck out to me was the tail. A wolf in the wild does not have a long 'hook ended' tail. That was not a pure wolf, it actually looks eerily like a black German Shepherd. Wolves have shorter body, longer leg, and shorter 'bottle brush' shaped tails. If anything the animal in the first video is a wolf hybrid, and like you said, that makes it bigger than it would be otherwise.

The first wolf was trapping that dog for the kill, tactically. That wasn’t just a random bark and chase ordeal. The wolf ran at the dog and then ran away from the dog to lure the dog to do exactly what it did…to pull the dog away from the open safer area, owner and all, and essentially, bring the dog deeper into the woods to attain more of it’s own territory to attack.

First video's absolutely fascinating. Here's what I observed:
Dog is barking at the wolf. It's curious and scared and obviously alarmed. Wolf assesses the situation. Some people in the comments say that the dog's aggression triggered a response, but I disagree. What the wolf is doing there is waiting; seeing how close the dog will get. The wolf isn't trying to play with the dog either; some people think that. It's trying to kill the dog.
The wolf launches at the dog, but quickly realizes that the dog can outmanoeuvre it, and it's fast enough to anticipate the attack and get away. Also, the wolf's position is already compromised: the dog knows it's there, so it can no longer ambush the fast dog. The wolf gets all of this information from just charging the dog once. What the wolf does now is extremely clever and quite scary: it immediately stops the attack and fakes a retreat. Tail between the legs, arched back, staying low to the ground: it's pretending to be scared of the dog, showing very submissive and fearful/cowardly body language. Dogs react to that behavior, thinking the other canine is fleeing. This triggers the aggressive chasing instinct of the dog, and it quickly persues the wolf.
The dog does this to make sure the threat leaves; chase it away as it's already scared and fleeing to ensure that the wolf doesn't change its mind. If you own a dog: try it. Play fight with your dog, then cower and whimper, and quickly run away and see how your dog responds to that. It will give chase; thinking that's its chance to dominate an intimidated opponent. The dog isn't dumb, it's just dog nature: instinct. Normally, what the dog does there would certainly work in making sure the threat vacates the area, but that's actually pack behavior. A pack of smaller, loud and aggressive animals will chase away a single, larger predator. Think of hyenas loudly chasing after a single lion. The wolf is displaying the same behavior as a lion would if it were being chased by a group of smaller hyeanas. So the dog is not stupid. It's just doing what it should be doing, except there's no pack to back it up.
You can see the wolf constantly looking back, checking the distance. The dog hesitates a split second, halts, and keeps a distance, and the wolf sees it, and cowers even lower; faking hesitant flight attempts. This makes the dog feel brave enough to get just a little bit closer, effectively taking the bait. At that point, the wolf knows the dog is within range, it turns around and quickly launches at the dog. I believe the wolf grabs the dog; most likely on the backside of the body, or a leg or something. Dog realizes it got bamboozled, cries in fear and panick, and probably in pain too, and the owner finally decides to do something.
The behavior of the wolf is very interesting. It learned how to do that: fake a retreat to invoke aggression and let the faster, aggressive canine approach till it's within range. It either learned to do it with other wolves, or it had some practice on other dogs, which could mean it killed dogs before. The wolf seemed to know how dogs respond to that. It might have even specifically been targeting the dog; looking for an easy meal. If the dog hadn't spotted the wolf, I think the wolf probably would've jumped it and killed it anyway. Wild animals are extremely alert and aware of their surroundings. It would've noticed the man and his pet dog and moved away long before they were close enough to film it like that. But the fact that it's that close to the dog implies to me that it was hunting it. It looks like the wolf got super close; close enough to ambush the dog, but at the last moment the dog spotted the wolf.
I don't think I've ever seen a dog do that. Whenever carnivores behave like that; they mean it.. and they'll bolt the first chance they get. But the wolf wasn't trying to leave; it wouldn't have tried to catch the dog first. The dog didn't have a pack to support it, nor did the (much smaller) dog show superior power in any way. The wolf just knew the dog would chase it if it would fake a submissive retreat. That's manipulation and deception. I mean its monstrous size is impressive, but the intelligence is truly scary.

great observations. though, i don't know if speed was the greatest factor here though. the dog's first evasive maneuver wasn't to turn back and out run the wolf, it ran to its side.. knowing something that big wouldn't be as nimble at zigging through the obstacles of the trees. in a straight line race, there's no way, with that stride advantage, the wolf wouldn't catch up. both animals calculated the environment, and each other's strengths and weaknesses (size/speed/experience/etc) in little to no time. instinct, experience and intelligence. i agree, the wolf most likely has had more successful interactions with dogs, and that dog probably had little to no experience with a predator of that size. if the dog was truly without a pack, or alone, i think it's clear if it behaved the same way, it would have paid the price. though we can't assume that the dog would have made the same choice to pursue without the backup it had, and had exp with having their gun support.. though, was prolly hoping the human would have put his gun to use sooner. anyhow, i totally agree, this was a brilliant display of split second decision making/intelligence on both parties. nature is impressive, always to be respected.

I live in Northern Alberta where we have the largest wolves in the world ( The Mackenzie Valley sub-species of Timberwolf ). A few years ago my son and I were hunting overnight in the late fall and we slept out in the open on a sandbar by a river. Just as it was getting dark I gave a couple cow moose calls and a whole pack of wolves started howling. It sounds pretty eerie and CLOSE when you are out in the wild and just sleeping on the ground with no protection. So we built a fire and my son fell asleep in his sleeping bag... I couldn’t sleep and made sure to have my rifle loaded and by my side. Just as I was nodding off I heard something sneaking through the bush and walking down to the river bank where we were. I had my flashlight ready as it came closer, just as I was about to turn the light on it turned around and headed back the way it had come. Gave me goosebumps, that’s for sure. I don’t think it was a moose because it sounded smaller, I’ll never know, but it was definitely creepy!

The dog was bitten on it's back and got launch in the air. It did survive however. Shot a couple shotgun shells in the air to scare it off and he ran after it. But yeah, this footage is legit. Monstrous wolf size. I'd guess it's around 5.5-6ft tall and over 11ft. The location is near the northern parts of Saskatchewan which is...pretty remote.

for those asking, I highly doubt that wolf killed that dog. The wolf didn't seem to be hunting or defending territory. The wolf wasn't even violent until the dog chased back after it. Probably just got ahold of him to scare him a bit, which he did 😂 but the dog was probably unharmed. It's very rare for a dog fight (or wolf fight) to end in death. A wolf will especially back down and run away if you, a human, starts to come into the fray. Wolves in most instances are more afraid of us than we are them. It's been instinctively ingrained into them and pass down through their DNA, that humans have been successfully hunting them for thousands of years.
