    The i5 12400 is simply an incredible deal. I recommend it to everyone building a midrange build. It’s a no brainer. On the lower end I always recommend the 12100. I don’t recommend AMD simply due to the all the issues AMD platforms have given me over the years. Including AM4.

      "I don’t recommend AMD simply due to the all the issues AMD platforms have given me over the years. Including AM4." Huh? AMD's AM4 has been the most stable and long-lived platform I've ever used, and I've been using PCs since my first AMD 386/40MHz back in 1991. This sounds more like an paid Intel comment than an honest report of user experience.

      I've thought about giving AMD a try since but in my place every good AMD part costs 10-20% more than Intel + out of stock, even pre-built. So for the sake of my wallet and peace of mind, my 2nd PC is Intel, and it works great this time, amazingly tbh.

    4:33 You say the RTX 3060 is a more reasonable buy for an i5 12400 build, but I respectfully disagree. If you go with a 3070 or 3080, it's assumed you will be gaming at 1440p or even 4k, where the GPU matters a lot more than the CPU. Benchmarks show that the i5 12400 will not bottleneck a 3080 at those resolutions. So, for a dedicated gaming PC, my advice would be to just stick to an i5, save money, and buy yourself the biggest graphics card your budget allows.

    The Problem with the higher Memory frequency has almost no effect to the Performance increase is due to the fact the timings are higher on Memory with higher frequency - in this case. If you would have used a Memory with higher than 3600 MT/s (3600 MHZ = 2x1800 MHz), the timings would get relatively lower on the Memory although the CPU does not support that high frequency. In this case the Memory would reduce it´s supported frequency to the highest the CPU provides, the timings would get lower as well, so the performance increase should be significantly higher. (usually the mainboard always provides much higher memory-frequencies than the CPU for it´s Generation/Socket). Not to mention the much faster, but also expensive DDR5 (maybe not in future)...-> Much higher Memory Frequency -> lower Memory timings -> higher FPS
    It´s also to mention if you have only one or up to six memory modules and if the memory has one or two ranks, this would boost the FPS as well a bit, if there were more.

    I also found that when comparing more premium MB's prices for 5600x and 12400 the total cost was almost the same, I went with Intel this time, because the platform is newer, and the b660 board I got had 2,5gbe, which was notably lacking on the b550 offerings

    • @Kermeous
      @Kermeous 2 роки тому

      Although I just got a 2.5Gbps modem (for getting 1+Gbps speed), there's a serious lack of 2.5Gbps routers at the moment. You can find some switches, but I can't find any decent Routers with multiple 2.5Gbps (for both input from modem, and output to LAN)

    • @DerSchaddan

      @@DerSchaddan I plan on getting an ASUS AX-86U that you can do that with, but its only one port. If I want to have the modem input 2.5gbps its locked to that port, with no way of distributing the 2.5Gbps out via ethernet.

    Great work on the 12400. This and 5600X are probably the most popular gaming PC for most people. It will be great if there is a link to show how to remove the power limit for 12400. In addition, what will be the performance impact if the users do remove the power limit for the 12400.
    Due to the crazy pricing on the GPU. Unfortunately most of us have to limit our budget on the CPU/MB and other components.

    Awesome detailed advice!
    Don't understand the part about the need for 12600K to pair with 3080 for 4K gaming though. Why? Coz often being GPU bound, isn't the 12400F good enough? I still believe in the saying that @4K gaming, CPU don't really matter.

      I was wondering about this as well, I was about to go for the 12400F + 3080 combo too. I really wish he would've elaborated more on the reasons why this is supposedly a bad idea, since his videos are otherwise so in-depth.

    For cooling, you gotta start recommending the Gammaxx 400. It comes with mounting hardware for just about every relevant CPU socket and the brackets for adding a second fan and the cooling is fantastic. All for under $20 and if you get the blue version they're only $15. I'm using it (with a cheap (3pack for $10), no name second fan added to make a push pull configuration) to overclock my 5700G iGPU to 2400MHz at 1.3volts and temps still stay in the 40s while playing Cyberpunk.

    • @PCBuilderChannel
      @PCBuilderChannel  2 роки тому +4

      Yes that is one I often recommend! Some people don't like the LED which cannot be turned off, so I typically mention the ID Cooling one which is a couple of dollars more.

    • @Stonerman135
      @Stonerman135 2 роки тому

      @@AyushGarg82 the Gammaxx 400 is basically a Hyper 212 EVO clone so your 12600f should be fine especially since it can't overclock. As for the V2 or the Pro, I'd say if you happen to have an extra 1200mm fan I'd get the V2 (that's the route I took but I lucked put and was given a fan that cost about as much as the Gammaxx itself) but if not and there's room in your budget for it, the second fan for the Pro model will definitely help.
      One thing you need to do is make sure you can fit the Gammaxx in your case. If you're using PCpartpicker and already have the case you want selected, the Gammaxx (and other coolers that won't fit) won't be listed when you go to select a CPU cooler and same thing if you pick your cooler first.

    With the I5 12400 I'd start with a better upgrade path on the motherboard and spend more on a full ATX Z690 board in the $200 price range compared to a upper end B660M at the $170 range. My choice would be the Gigabyte Z690 UD DDR4.

    A genuine sincere thanks for this nice informative video from a 13 year long pc gamer and builder, who, thinks of themselves as tech savvy compared to the general population, but was a bit "out of the loop" with cutting edge stuff. After dealing with a very frustrating past few months dealing with either a failing 3700x couple year old ryzen and/or the apparently widespread Ryzen "fTPM" issue, I said screw it and ordered a 12500 setup. Was only $10 more than the 12400. I ordered the black 120mm ID cooling tower cooler per your suggestion. I'm pairing it with 32gb 3600 ram, a 2tb Sk Hynix p41 gen4 7000mb nvme(went a bit overboard on this drive, but, I've kept my Samsung regular 840 for nearly 10 years, I'm in it with this nvme for the long haul), and reusing my existing 3070. Will make a quite potent 1440p high refresh rate gaming pc. Unfortunately, myself and some others still suffer from the stuttering and lagging with the fTPM issue even after venders released a bios update in May, a few months after AMD acknowledged the problem. When myself and others posted about still suffering from the fTPM problems, we were essentially met with crickets and tumbleweeds basically being left out to dry and abandoned. Idk if they expected us to just sit here and suffer, but, there is definitely something funky with the CPU after multiple new motherboards and new OS installs tried, no virus, temps ok, drives checked out ok, still the same problem when trying my old gpu too. I was just truly stumped and it was getting depressing so I threw in the towel on that build and ordered the 12th gen i5 which isn't affected by the ftpm stuff like ryzens are to hopefully ride out the rest of this console gen trouble free on w10, I'm waiting a few more years on win11 lol. I genuinely tried for a long time and did everything I could do. This will be my first intel since the good old 2600k. I didn't end up streaming like I thought I would so the extra threads on the ryzen 7 didn't benefit me much. Encoding can be offloaded to the GPU these days anyway. I sure do miss the good old days on windows 7 with stone cold reliable ivy bridge/sandy bridge with set it and forget it 1600mhz ram or even 1333. Great find on the 120mm ID cooler, I kinda grimaced when I saw how much the old venerable Hyper 212 shot up in price these days. I took a "gamble" on an up and coming tower cooler many years ago on a tinkerer build for fun with the very well regarded Cryorig h7 and it cooled an OC'd 8320E very well. Very intrigued to try out the ID cooler. I would have gotten that cheap $19.99 Deepcool Gammax v2 but didn't want to have to wait for them to send me the intel 1700 socket adapter...the ID cooler said it was already compatible.

And im thinking which one the best between 12400 vs 5600G. But many friends told me that 12400 WITHOUT VGA is better than 5600G.You think 12400 can handle any games like for example Valorant or Apex?

    Good info. In my case it was after the fact since I already recently (March '23) built a PC using the 12400F with an ASUS Prime H670 Plus D4 and a 3060 Ti, but in watching this video it sounds like I did ok. I waited an extra year for prices and availability to improve and was able to come in at around $900 including a bump up on the tower and 750W PSU, but re-using my existing 1 and 2 TB SSD's with the OS from my old PC already installed. I'm very happy with the new build so far. My old PC (which still works, btw) is from 2009 with upgrades over the years on everything but the mobo and processor. Of course the new one is light years better.

It was a pre build and didn't have option to change motherboard to H660M unfortunately. It was a great price at the time i bought so i had to buy it :) I wonder if i can still increase the power limiter from that motherboard thought?

    Hey, Jason. I have a question. Is the MSI MAG B660M Mortar DDR4 still a good choice for an i5 12400F build? PCpartpicker says it's incompatible when compared to some other boards which are much more expensive. The MSI B660M Mortar is currently on sale for only $128, that's why I'm wondering.

    Just built an i5-12400 on an Asus z690-plus wifi d4, 32GB ddr4 3200 ram, 1tb M.2 and 4tb hard drive. All of it, tries, to come together with a RX 6500XT GPU. The GPU is temporary, hopefully. Everything is in a NZXT H510 case. This build is a lot better than what I've been running for a few years (i7-6700k).
    Going to be building another one, for my son, soon. We are going to go with the i5-12400K instead.

Due to the current GPU price drops, I’ve decided to begin building my first PC, it’s an i5-11600k RTX 3060 build, I’ve began buying my parts and will probably wait and hope for the GPUs to drop a bit more ( the GPU will probably be the last part I buy), needless to say I’m very excited.
