- What is Luxury? The boys are back, proving once again that you don’t have to be old to be bitter. On their inaugural episode for the Hagerty Podcast Network, automotive journalist Jason Cammisa and Walking Encyclopedia of Automotive Knowledge Derek Tam-Scott discuss different types of luxury cars.
Their unexpected conclusion: the best luxury car might be a cheap beat-up car. After all, there is no luxury greater than not having to worry. Or at least, that’s the theory.
Along the way, the Carmudgeons touch upon the difference between a perfect BMW E30 (like Jason’s 325i Touring) and a beater (like Jason’s 325i Sedan.) Then, it’s off to the Lucid Air, Derek’s Mk7.5 Volkswagen GTI, and how sometimes daily-driving a cheap example of an expensive car is possibly the least luxurious way to go. Because nothing is less luxurious than a tow truck.
Or is space the final luxury frontier? After all, the Rivian R1T packs more cargo space in it than an AMG SUV. And it can keep up with an R35 Nissan GT-R.
The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network.
About the Podcast: The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure and TV host with over 250 million views on UA-cam alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.
The audio quality upgrade is very welcome. Congrats on the new gig.
Too much bass. Way too much bass. Hurts my head
@@PigglyWigglyDeluxe Meet the new gig, same as the old gig.
we get nothing for ages now i have TWO NEW SHOWS TO CATCH UP to?!??!
not even mad. fantastic! good luck ya cracky old farts!
Love to see it.
“You don’t always have to win the race with horsepower, you can f*** with the other cars on the road.”
First episode and it’s already off to an amazing start
Derek: "A GTI is a solution to a problem I don't have". Now owns a GTI! Great audio - can't wait for more consistent Carmudgeon pods!
I have carefully re-engineered my life and cognitive frameworks in order for it to “make sense” to buy something that I want. Don’t all enthusiasts do this in order to create logical reasons to buy cars?!
@@Dtamscott You mean like convincing ourselves that a P38 is a good idea? Yes, we all do it....
@@Dtamscott I am an avid watcher of your content (think all episodes, some more than one, including all PCF and Jason's Hagerty content).
My one question if I may, for you who daily a GTI, have you driven the FK8 Type-R?
Excluding the looks (which I love, but they are not for everybody), what would be your thoughts?
We have 2 episodes in one day, oh boy, it clearly is a great day.
what is the second
@@markokozic First one is on the ISSIMI channel, this is second episode of Carmudgeon in this day.
@@Kocan7 tnx
The lamps could move back out of frame. And aim a couple 400 watt soft lights on the ceiling for some fill.. get the guys to the middle of the table so the tv fits better in the wide shot.
A black background would be even better.
Hey, you're hired. Wanna come here and DP/Set Design? Our budget is a million... thank-yous. :P
Jason went on Matt's podcast, heard the SM7Bs, and got Hagerty to pay for them here
And Matt went on Rogan's podcast and did the same! Literally, actually. Heh, yeah, I was about to comment something like, "looks like you texted Matt Farah and asked, 'tell me exactly what equipment to buy for a podcast studio.'"
The audio quality is great! So excited for the new setup with y’all together in a studio!
God damn the bass is excessive. It hurts my head. I turned the bass all the way down and off in my system and still is excessive. Idk how you guys enjoy this
I am so here for this and so happy you guys are going to continue doing these!
So glad to see The Hyphen made it here, with The Hagerty-verse realizing the value of The Carmudgeons. How about adding a forum where one of the topics can be a running poll of ideas to discuss in future Carmudgeon episodes?
Loved the hierarchy of Italian vs. German vs. Japanese cars. Keep up the greatness.
Lads can you do more content on the VW Golf GTI , you barely mention it.
Yes, ladies are here 🙋🏻♀️
Best car content on the internet is going weekly rather than quarterly, get hyphenated!… I mean hyped!
Hagarty has been clawing it's way into the life blood of Car Culture and especially Sports Car Culture.
Yes I know the obvious it aligns them with insurance prospects...but it's working. I'm going to use Hagarty for my Datsun restomod, insurance. But really they have been hitting the Sports Car Enthusiast right in the heart of our World!
Good job Hagarty !
I'm a Lady who listens!
I know nothing about e-Golf other than what I've heard on this show (from about 2020), which makes it sound like a pretty good good electric car. Question: why didn't VW make any more noise about the electric Golf and acted as if the pointless "cute" ID3/4 was their first electric car?
Great to have you in a dedicated channel! That way I hope to enjoy more carmudgeon shows because it is always a delight to hear you both. Continue the great work on all channels you are in. Thanks!
Congrats on the new channel and old podcast.
Love this! Great to see this back to the old format, I've been hoping for this for ages now!
L.E. You better deliver on the weekly issue of this podcast, you promissed!
I feel like we just warped into the future with this new audio equipment! Great to hear you guys get to continue this!
I'm really excited that this show has moved from ISSIMI to Hagerty. I laughed so much during the conversation back in forth between Cammisa and - (Derek) that I suspect this wil become l my favorite podcast on UA-cam 😎😎😎 currently forward to next week's episode!!!
Very happy this is a thing now and we're going to see more of these as I absolutely love this show, the sound quality is also massively improved which is ace! Keep up the good work..
I'm glad I stumbled across this podcast. I've found that I enjoy everything that Jason Cammisa does. Thank you to Hagerty for making me aware of him.
I daily my mk7 gti all winter in minnesota.... and mine is slammed on the floor. Trust me -- you are fine
My 95 year old self was surprisingly able to find the channel. Glad you guy's finally found a way to make the show more often. Looking forward to it. THANK YOU HAGERTY for helping make this possible.
Had to pause the other one to come here and subscribe
So glad to be getting new episodes again, keep up the amazing work
Jason I bought my E36 325 i about 5 years ago. I just fit in it and I love it and its not going anywhere.
I admit I watched both shows back to back. Im a Carmudgeon masochist
Even I can't stand that much Hyphenation in one day! :P
Watching back to back with episode 47 really highlights the benefit of your new studio setup and sound quality! Looking forward to more episodes to come with these massive car nerds.
I drive a luxury shitbox, an e38 turbodiesel (so its actually reliable) with 400k miles and absolutely no clearcoat left anywhere, and its, for me, the ultimate definition of luxury
Why aren't you talking through free iPhone 4 headphones?
On seat heaters, I just learned about the 1951 Buick Lesabre concept car! Aluminum 215” hemi with a supercharger and two carbs, one for gas one for methanol, with the transmission in the back, heated seats, rain sensor for the top…cool stuff, that probably worked once. That engine was also the predecessor to the nailhead V8 and explains its goofy valvetrain geometry.
My wife runs a Clubsport exhaust from the euro GTI. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a bit more volume and tone without making it obnoxious.
I am continuing to enjoy you, guys, with your cute jokes... especially HYPHEN being the father of your new.....(A.K.A. 3RD BMW) acquisition. Very cute. hahaha
...keep them UP! lol
What is the name of that Ferdinand Peach documentary you referenced on that other channel please?
Sure - the doc I talked about (in English) is: ua-cam.com/video/AsPmJdlrBiI/v-deo.html - but the scariest quote ever of Piëch is here: ua-cam.com/video/_NH4jtHQ4qQ/v-deo.html
Nice to see Hyphen make it to Hagerty
This show was cool as F***… Now it’s at the nth degree of coolness. Love the better schedule and can’t help asking again for the Piech episode, and the Lancia episode Derek had mentioned in the past… Love you guys.
Kvetching About Kars?
Grumpier Old Car Men?
The Old and the Relentless?
Quick note: Cadillac had the auto-dimming headlights in 1956.
Hyphen, if you're interested my '19 Golf R Lapiz Blue with only 32,000 km has just had its service. Canadian car, 2 sets of wheels (19" summers, 18" winters), is going up for sale shortly. I've got a deposit on a GR Corolla Circuit Pack that I was going to replace it with.
If I was told... my car had failed to proceed, Id tell the dude, "NO the ____________ thing broke!
P,S
If I ever saw a E30 Wagon: 1. Id probably fall to the ground and say Im not worthy. 2. Id have to get at least 50 pics of it and have to personally give the owner a handshake.. cause Its just a beautiful WAGON err (meanwhile.. Id probably hyperventilate at how beautiful, rare and awesome this Wagon is.) and I thank him for buying it.
@jasoncamissa Pro tip: own two of your favorite great car. I own two Porsche 996 911's. One has 150k miles, one has 180k. Both from 1999. I have NEVER not had a running car that I love to drive.
💀from earpods to a sony-shure setup that probably costs more than my dad's car. Y'all came a long way. I'm excited. When will this be on Spotify Jason? Also congrats on your E30 purchase. Hope it brings you joys and pain in equal measure, as all BMW's do.
Jason is in for serious pain if he bought a BMW that a Ferrari mechanic couldn't fix. E30's are pretty straightforward to work on, though.
@@dougrobinson8602 no ofc I was just kidding. 325i's are pretty reliable, except for the cooling system , which is made of bavarian fat 🤡
I'm with them on the GTI, but with a twist. Mine is a Mk7 wagon (because we need to carry a sea kayak and SUP on the roof) with a hideaway hitch (because we only have one vehicle and we need to rent trailers to haul stuff every once in a while). Being aluminum, the EA211 1.4 is much lighter than the cast-iron EA888 in the GTI, and with the manual transmission making it even lighter, the DCC suspension and GTI brakes are working with a less nose-heavy platform than the standard GTI. Mine tops out at about 135 mph and has averaged over 36 mpg over its first 70k miles. The economy is important to me, as the price of gasoline is about 2.5x what it is in the U.S.
Two episodes in one day. And I have the day off!!!!!!
And i have a Cornflower Blue GTI. Have to look at the mods that we’re discussed!
There are 46 episodes of Carmudgeon over at ISSIMI. This episode 48. Where is episode 47?
Edit: found it. its on ISSIMI but not in the Carmudgeon playlist for some reason...
For Derek, you should be able to press and hold the traction control button and turn ESP all the way off. It works on my MKVI R, I hope they didn't take it away for the MKVII.
Also for the chains, get auto socks. They get you through chain control faster and for less money, though the top speed is 25mph.
I have a completely stock MK5 VW Golf/Rabbit - put in SS brake lines, and my friends convinced me to get 034 motor mounts and the solid dogbone mount when they needed replacement. Now, I knew that I was going to get some vibration - but holy crap, first time I started it up, it was like a motorcycle - whole thing shook - after a 1000 miles, they're broken in now, and adds just the right amount of motor noise and vibrations (on top of doing a good job holding my transmission in place)
Lady and Gentlemen...
18:45: There are exceptions... I know a guy who needed a new engine with his Toyota at around 30 000 km. (And no, he drove it the same way he did with all other cars, and they made it further than that) And i knew a guy who was sooo proud of his Lexus for being "better than any german car and more reliable" and after a few years, his complete dashboard came off during driving. Neither of them modded their cars.
I have never spend insame amounts of maintenance money on my german cars. Spare parts for cnsumable items were cheaper than for japanese cars where i live, and in my 24 years of driving i was lucky enough that out of 6 different Mercedes i never had anything expensive to break on my. (currently a 12 and a 10 year old one, all of them bought used)
Do you think that JRG 3 series you bought could have a clogged catalytic converter? If there was a fueling or timing issue previously it could be toast.
It's great to hear so much more talk about the 6.3 - a true bargain as you mentioned.
Even Steve McQueen's 6.3 didn't go for very much even though it was fully restored!
The reincarnation of the Carmudgeon show
The studio needs built in shelves with toy cars 🚗 and random shit on it. 😁
GTI has better fuel economy, it’s cheaper to buy, it’s got accessible limits for road use which makes it more fun anywhere but a track.
Congratulations to you both. I can't believe we are going to get this "weekly". (I know how the sausage is made).
Good choice on the Mics. They will last you the rest of your lives. I recommend bringing your own mic when you do other podcasts/interviews. Both for the audio quality and for health reasons. Trust me, as someone who talks into mics everyday. The audio quality is much improved as well.
Thank you again Hagerty, for recognizing this hidden gem of a "podcast". (A meat-cast in a video casing?) I may have stretched that analogy....
Are we finally going to get to hear Hyphen wax poetic about the DS? How about the SM?
Would love if you guys could get your hands on a well-done electric conversion of something blasphemous, and give us your opinion. (eg. Electric classic cars is doing FOUR Testarossa conversions, and finished an E9 bat mobile. I know they are in UK, just an example).
Kool, that should help the algorithm.
All hail the Algorithm!
Here’s an interesting fact, car companies have stolen many ideas they so called pioneered from the general public without paying a cent through car magazine quizes promissing jobs or cars etc for the best ideas, they give the win to a usless idea and are able to steal all the good ones to sell to car companies.Autocar england did it with my magic carpet ride that i wrote in 2004 ,didn’t win, didn’t hear back from them but it came out on mercedes years latter and then rolls Royce and now so many others. This has probably happened with most great puoneering ideas ,disgraceful really
Jesus guys turn the bass down. I’ve turned the bass all the way down and off through my speakers and it still hurts me head. I just came from the last episode on the Issimi channel too, big oof here
Former MK7.5 GTI owner here. I 100% agree they need a larger gas tank, and the engine braking is nonexistent.
Would it be too much to ask for pics of the shitboxes yo'll are talking about🙄, otherwise I'm quite a fan🤨
they have risen!
The world could do with a few more curmudgeons, I mean carmudgeons, I mean, I don't know what I mean ;)
Surprised that Cammisa didn’t just start shout nine and nein in German. Opportunity completely missed.
Coming from the last issue podcast and wow audio quality
Derek can you please recommend another book? The father of modern safety guy can't be bought for less than $60
At least lady
Super happy. I have a friend who owns a Forester XT EJ257 tuned to 450bhp. The thing is on 275 all-rounders. It fucking rips, even though its super ugly. He sandwd it down and didnt paint it yet
That's nice! But why can't I find this on podcast apps? Please make it happen!!
Please enable the high pass filters on your microphones. Thank you.
Should start singing at the start for no reason again, now that the microphones are upgraded
Nobody wants to hear that. NOBODY! :)
@@JasonCammisa you know you want to, don’t let us stop you
Jason you need a better and more masculine co host, like Liberman. I really dislike the feminine undertone of the segments.
Sorry I haven't seen any of your videos recently. Blame the algorithm
Man! Adamn sandler's voice sounds really good with these new mics
I know the guys already recorded the podcast talking about the collector car value of sedans, and how they changed. I would expect, the generation that only had Coupes and Sedans for the most part, saw the sedans as family cars, and coupes as note. You get a generation that grew up with mini-vans and suvs as the family cars, and all of the sudden, sedans can be cool, because they weren't just a family car.
Yo know we will watch it if you record it from home anyway?
GR Corolla as a GTI alternative?
I’ve been thinking about exactly this!
I miss the danglers... (Still awesome though. One of my favorites!)
Awesome comment 👏
I wish you (jason) would do an episode on hagerty about the egolf.
I would like to see Derek and Jason on The Smoking Tire podcast together. A Carmudgeon threeway
no... the answer to driving in snow is NOT "get an all-wheel drive", the answer is to get a set of snow tires.
Rose sounds like an ETA … (jumping to conclusions)
Just coming from your old show, the sound is so much gooder
Cadillac was actually the first with airbags in the 70s. It didn’t sell so they stopped doing it
First with heated seats in 66
Nice audio quality, but I don’t need to see a mixer in the foreground…. Lol…. Furthermore, couldn’t you afford a table made out of REAL wood?
That 400-lb table is solid wood, thank you!
SANDLER, HYPHEN, WHERE'S THE BS BUTTON??!!
Great show guys, as usual, but would prefer a louder level of audio.
Jason Shirt, you're what they call an eccentric!
The KONA N is what you guys are looking for lol
Can I stream the audio only for listening in the car ?
Did you guys compare the NC2 & ND2? I was looking forward to that.
It’s coming in a future episode!
That's also why I tuned in
The last episode on Issimi was 46, this is 48. Where'd 47 go?
Nevermind, after just looking I went back and looked again and it was there🤔
Impoverished people talking about their 9th car and their 10 year anniversary with a 911
Still love you guys
Oh compression braking = engine braking
Any chance we could get you on Spotify?
It's pretty empty down here
Can you grab the bullshit button? Lol
Cammisa.... This is the channel i was waiting from you!!! ❤️ Say hi to Derek from Fabio (the one with the manual r129 from Spain from Instagram which I don't use anymore lol). Take care you both!
God i am soooo stoked!!!
Finally rid of that damn patio table.
Frazier and Niles back at it!
