You said it brother! This band grips my soul! So glad that the This Is It crew is spreading the word. The live performance, though wonderful, misses much of the nuance and presence of the studio version of YYZ. Listening to the entire Moving Pictures album is a spiritual experience.

The intro to YYZ is Morse code: Y: dash dot dash dash Y: dash dot dash dash Z: dash dash dot dot. So together its: dash dot dash dash dash dot dash dash dash dash dot dot then repeat that pattern remembering that the dash is long and the dot is short, one of the cleverest intro's I've heard, brilliant really.

This concert was in Rio in Brazil. Rush has a huge following there but it took them a lot of years before they were able to perform there. That is why the crowd knew this instrumental well enough to "sing" along with it. The fans probably never thought they would get the chance to see the band live.

The beginning of the song is in Morse Code which they heard when Alex Lifeson the guitarist who is also a licensed pilot flew them back to Toronto.
This was in front of a crowd of 40,000 people. They had no idea when they planned the tour that they were so popular in Brazil.
As for not getting the Grammy. The music "business " hated Rush because they refused to be cookie cutter and created what they wanted to play not what the industry wanted them to play.
    Cheers

The band didn’t know they had such a following in Brasil, where this is shot. This was probably the biggest crowd they played for. You can tell by the bewilderment of Alex's (guitarist), and Geddy’s (Bass) faces at time. Neil Peart, the drummer, also known as the “Professor”, was very stoic in his expressions. He also wrote most of their lyrics which are just as impressive as the music. I learned how to play drums listening to Rush. They are a tremendous example of humbleness. RIP- Neil Peart.

Olli: 1, @6:57 Geddy (bass) and Neil (drums) made up this jam when Alex (guitar) wasn't around, so it's a heavy bass and drums groove even BEFORE my guitar hero added his touches to it. @7:22 Neil doesn't have to turn around, the drum set does that for him when he needs it to. The drums behind him in this video are a whole other electronic set, with all synthesized sounds, and the set rotates. All he has to do is stand up and sit down again and he's playing the other set. You really gotta see this drummer's solos! RIP Neil.
Rush is my favorite. Thank you, THIS IS IT Reactions, for doing them justice! Gonna look for that Tom Sawyer reaction now.

Great band of musicians that never had any drama surrounding them, pretty regular guys from Canada that just like to jam together; cool thing about Rush, they've said they wrote music in the studio for themselves first, they have to play those songs show after show so why write hit songs to please others, if the fans dig it, that's a win.

Their instrumentals, especially when played live are the ultimate testament to their individual and collective virtuosity, I think.
Sure, it's a bear in the studio but you can always take the best takes over several days. But live? You have one shot to get it right or blow it. I saw at least one show on each tour from Hold Your Fire to Vapor Trails and then Time Machine. Never once heard them botch an instrumental. Talk about playing like a single musician. Stunning.

This was from their first tour to Rio - they didnt know they had such a huge fan base in Brazil.
These guys can do almost any type of music - slow, fast, heavy, acoustic, etc. Check out La Villa Strangiato. Also, of note, Neil Peart - the drummer - wrote all the lyrics. Listen to The Trees or Nobody's Hero for some amazing lyrics.

I'm not sure if you guys are playing, but "grammys?" YYZ was, at best, the 4th most popular song off this album when it was released. The live performance of it is what really provides for the thrill.

YYZ was nominated for a Grammy in 1981, lost to The Police instrumental Behind My Camel. Several Rush instrumentals werre Grammy nominated but none of them won.

@@gold98gtpI just listened to “Behind the Camel” and there is NO WAY that should have beat out YYZ for Best Instrumental. It was less the 3 minutes of a very repetitive riff. UNBELIEVEABLE!

Hey, guys, love your reactions! You asked how many drums Neil has. To see him in the extreme you should see his drum solo from Frankfurt. It'll blow you away!

Just so you know, Neil Peart would play with a double drum set on a rotating platform and he would rotate and switch to the other set on the fly! Amazing! As an old RUSH fan I recommend that you check out their other amazing music!

This is a great live performance! Another of my personal favorite live performances is 'Between the Wheels', live from the R30 tour in Germany.
