Ever notice how some movies totally wrap you up in the world of a character to the point of it being claustrophobic and uncomfortable, while other movies make you feel more like you’re just observing events in their lives unfold in a more detached way? Much of this tone and feeling is a result of the filmmaker’s choice of shot sizes.

I would love to see a video where you cover different approaches on how to deal with difficulties that will always come up during shooting a movie. (Such as working with reflections in large windows, working with natural light, countering the changing color temperature during sunset or sunrise etc.)

Your channel is how I hope a great film school curriculum would be like, especially for the more technical courses. So many shots from different movies being used here as great illustrative examples. Thanks for creating this!

Great video. I think this highlights a lot of what people feel when they watch a movie, but don't know why. Shot size is such a great tool to also highlight non-verbals, like you mentioned, information. It works really well to show feelings when there isn't any dialogue between characters. Spaghetti Westerns are a great example.

Great video as always! Well I think that the focal length is almost as important as the shot size. If you shoot from a distance and zoom-in to, say, a two shot, it won't feel as intimate, especially if there is enough background so we as the audience sense that a telephoto focal length (zoom or prime) was used. A zoomed-in shot always feels as if observed from a distance. An extreme wide angle very close to an actor/actress is very stark and can have a comedic effect or if its dynamic hand held it makes us aware of the camera. Then of course our perception of speed and distance varies enormously with focal length. So I'd say how a shot feels is a combination of shot size and folcal length, to gether with other important factors such as eye level.

How do you do a shot for shot analysis? I try to do this but some shot sizes seem ambiguous towards meaning. Is that normal? How do you make it easier for analysis?

There are some movies where you feel really deeply for the characters and some where you don't, having a great script with characters that are compelling and have depth to them is a start to telling a great narrative, on another note I aslo watched an interview with Quentin Tarantino where he said that he had a great script for Natural Born Killers and that Oliver Stone messed it up, what ended up being filmed was far different from his original script.

you keep using shots from memoria but that film was a boring rip off of fine art films the type you see in galleries, except its about a white british person, who is the female john malkovich, who no one wants to see act
