Generally I liked Unicorn's opening start the best because it did a good job of both calling back to previous series while also being nicely fleshed out for newcomers. The nostalgia effect is just too potent not to capitalize on even in a new beginning 😁
Zeta and SEED Destiny. Kamille is pretty wacky in the first episode. The Gundam having the dark color scheme is pretty cool too. SEED Destiny's 1st episode is just jam packed. Its main Gundam's introduction was well done with the build up. Although the Impulse have the traditional color scheme, it's introduced with an alternate red instead too, which is pretty cool to me
I just have to say, I can't express how much I appreciate someone finally pointing out that Gundam isn't actually about people killing each other. It uses that to emphasize its actual message, sure, but it's still not ABOUT that, any media that has people killing each other that's actually about people killing each other is just vapid and I can't believe the amount of people I've seen that are adamant that Gundam is just that, I can't tell if they realize whether or not they're insulting the series by that assertion.
It makes me extremely sad when people only see this franchise as that. It's like saying Berserk is a series that is just violence and nothing more, but we all know that it's something more, and I wish people view Gundam with more nuance.

I feel like it's got more to do with how each series is presented. I've come to realize how each series always had some sort of "production" problems which almost seems like a curse, considering what happened during the production of the first Gundam show back in the 79's. This is definitely a problem that's hindering the franchise in portraying its messages, and may even be what's setting people off of the franchise. Shows like Gundam UC and 00 did a great job portraying its messages, it's just sad how much people are looking down into them just because they're just OVAs or because it's "different".

I felt that way when I first watched it but I challenge you to rewatch it. When I did I found that Lt. Jerod doesn't even intentionally insult him and Kamille just has hurt pride and starts a fist fight. Yes the Titans mistreat him after, but Jerod doesn't intentionally do anything to personally attack Kamille until after he had killed several of his friends. Remember Jerod killing his mother was due to his ignorance. After giving the series another go I think Jerod could've been a better person if he just been with a different faction. His problem is he thinks he's one of the good guys.
00’s way of introducing pretty much all sides of the story in Season 1 sort of made me dig in to it especially about Celestial Being’s motives, and it definitely made me want to see more of how things would turn out And then the show tricked me to getting more Gunpla than my shelf could handle
God, I remember starting with IBO and my favorite thing about it was how you actually had to THINK about the characters, what they were doing and why they were doing it, whereas most anime just.. do not expect that from the viewer, they tell you everything outright and leave very little to the imagination. Gundam really out here filtering media literacy and I'd have it no other way. Though I went back and confirmed that this was indeed series tradition, I'm glad G Witch kept that up as well, and goddamn is it filtering people left and right lmao Well, I say that, but the vast majority seem to have enjoyed it, in sheer contrast to IBO season 2, which I still love but hey.
IBO is like the odd one out of the franchise, it reflected its spot not only in the franchise but in the sea of saturation of 2010s era anime, I love it for that. I feel like G.Witch drew alot of influence from IBO in how it tells the Gundam story in a different way, given it was made for a new audience, I can see why. I can appreciate how they decided not to redo what they did with 00, which was like a re-introduction of the franchise to that era of anime. I have my qualms with G.Witch but I ultimately I've grown to like it, it does right by the franchise and also reflects its spot in the current era of anime. The 2nd OP is dope too, that always helps.

Because, when you go back, you have to ask yourself... why was it encased in stone, and how could human civilization forget something this powerful? What happened that led to this in the first place?
Gundam as a whole is really big. It has movies, ova , manga, novels etc.. Theres always something for everyone. I started with the old shows zeta era but my favourite with always be Unicorn Gundam Ova/series. Its what brought back my love to gunpla after being burned out. It also energized my love to gunpla.
There's a reason why GUNDAM was one of the three most influential anime in the Japanese anime industry. In 1979 it set an Enshutsu standard for almost 20 following years. Tomino Yoshiyuki was a true legend. The way he staged using a lot of techniques from the movie. I actually considered Turn A GUNDAM as the perfect piece of work in his career.
And speaking of taking its time to unfold the story, another good example was Eureka 7. I really didn't like Renton for the first half of the show. But he was constantly developed as the protagonist. And the way he became mature was believable and the audience could relate. That's what most modern animes and characters lack.

Top tier video, you nailed every aspect of it 👌 As of now, I'm watching almost everything gundam-related in broadcast order, which for those out there who want an actual order of any long series is what I'd recommend. Otherwise I agree with you that we can just watch the things that caught out attention and start from there. I'm currently at 0080 War in the Pocket and out of all the Gundam series I've watched, my favorite 1st episode definitely is 0079's, even with its flaws it's just so iconic. I'm hopeful that with all the Gundam series I have yet to watch, I'll find another 1st episode as great or even better than that one.
Every single fight in 08th is won by complete and utter plot convenience and Shiro ever meeting Aina again is infinitely more convenient than any instance of Newtype magic in the series. I love 08th, but please praise it for what it actually is, comments like yours are why I hated it on my first watch. The only thing realistic about the series is the animation, everything else is borderline Looney Tunes, not that far off from typical Gundam Looney Tunes, but regardless.
The first episode of the original series is almost perfect as it quickly establishes characters, the conflict, the factions, and importantly, the tone.
For me when I first watched Wing on YTV in 2000 (from Canada 🇨🇦) I was like WOAH when I saw Deathsythe. Then became hooked and seeing Wing Zero Custom in EW I was 😱 and then found the Gundam encyclopedia from 2002. Been hooked then took a break but Z and IBO got me hooked again. Now love the series and don’t plan on leaving ever again.
Imma be honest. WFM episode 0 was the only reason I got 5 episodes into the anime. If epidsode 1 was the first I saw I would have just walked away. Then for a YT comment to make me think that it somehow got better. I want those hours back.
The "make your 1st ep a banger" is an industry standard not just in anime, but all media. Much less a Gundam show. It's a no brainer. Nah, this is just a You thing. You got tricked easily! Everytime i finish a Gundam seires, i'm always left sated. The next gundam series i would watch would always be in 5-10 years, purely by chance, but i would stay till the end. And be left sated again
I would describe the prologue as displaying the tone and aesthetic, and the first episode as setting the setting, stakes, rules and properly display the main gundam.
I don't mind if they show the Gundam in the last few minutes of the first few episodes as long at it's done properly. SEED Destiny's 1st ep for me. It screams massive potential. It even introduces my favourite Cosmic Era girl, Lunamaria. GSD almost have the opposing side aka the enemy of the previous war as the main characters and I really like it, I really do. ZAFT got the best looking uniform! But alas, as Kuai Liang says, such wasted potential (Mortal Kombat meme).

Mostly cos i've not seen it yet; i never knew the Turn A doesn't appear in its first episode. The Alex doesn't either, not even being activated until the penultimate episode when the Kampfer attacks.
Gundam Seed is still my all time favorite Gundam series, followed by Gundam 00 and Iron Blooded Orphans. I've seen them all, every Gundam show. I just love the themes in Seed, as it dives into the notion of what a soldier is and what it means to give up your agency, to follow orders and fight your moral and ethical stances. It has a rich cast of characters that struggle with this notion as it culminates into beautiful development all across the board - those who find agency, those who fights for it and those who give in to their orders and lose agency. All around greatness that just delivers a solid Gundam show.
Yeah SEED is one of my favorite AUs. It’s so overhated, but I really got invested in the story. I find it 3rd behind Universal Century and Gundam 00. I still need to see Gundam X and Turn A tho, and I heard those were amazing.
I couldn't agree more with the the conclusion, I always tell my friends who are trying to get into it to just pick one that looks cool to them. The way that I see it, entry in the franchise is made in a way so that new people can hop in and have at least an understanding of the current events, although they'll miss out on some of the nuance and deeper understanding it'd still be a enjoyable experience, albeit only one that can be enjoyed at face value. P.S. The way you cut and edited this is masterful, those seamless transitions are on another level, especially at 3:50.
WfM has a mechanical designer from Fromsoft, powerful, competing megacorporations lording over the population and guess what? The premise got me expecting a story about mercenaries fighting for their employers, the corporations interests and the MC is callsigned or nicknamed Witch but it turns out to be, you know the end product. Tbh, Witch would've been a fine Raven's nickname. If you know the word Raven, then you know this mecha game. Not to mention the anime has an arena, a game mode which the game franchise is known for. Hint: Fromsoft.

I gave up on Blood Orphen. It’s was kinda boring. Then I watched 3 more episode and it just did not stop being boring. But I can’t lie, the Barbatos looks awesome.
I somehow feel the urge to watch Turn A Gundam now. To be honest, the Gundam shows that stuck with me the most, were the ones which didn't have a hero Gundam. Namely MS 8th Team and War in the Pocket. Because those shows are about the people, their lifes, relationships and the things they want to protect. It's a bit sad that these kind of shows are rare, because of course, Bandai has to make their hero Gundam badass because they want to sell us that plastic crack (and yes, I also fall victim to that). But still, in the end a good story/world building always wins over a cool hero Gundam.

I think it’s really good, one of the better AU series, although I felt that they set up a larger scope only to end on a small scale. It just felt dissonant in that factor. I do appreciate that it is so much different from other Gundam which makes it stand out.
Every Gundam's story seems surface level, and every Gundam expects the audience to be intelligent enough to figure out the nuances for themselves. If you want Gundam to spell its nuances out for you, you're in the wrong franchise.

Just started a year ago. I would recommend the first Gundam show made with subtitles. Especially since you are probably familiar with Wing, so you already somewhat know what you are getting into. Or just choose a Gundam show with an interesting sounding premise. Series I wouldn’t recommend as a starting point are Zeta, ZZ, and Char’s Counterattack as they are all sequels to the original series and each other. Anything else is mostly fair game.
I was honestly turned off by tWfM's first episode. It seemed like just another High School anime with a twist. I'll wait for the English Dub to watch it. but I'm in no hurry.

Gundam sure tricks me into wanting more...Gunpla. I wish its storytelling was better though. In my opinion, most Gundam stories are mediocre at best. I'd rather read a good book.
I got into gundam from gunpla. Mainly as cheaper toys by building it yourself. I find most of the serious series really boring and repetitive. Some of the setting are so unreal. Like they are so poor yet they have these colossal robots just for killing each other. But never use them for farming. Melt the part down for metal to build the stuffs they need. Wing gundam have these beautiful sunset scene with farmers in the field but they have these giant robots but no smaller robots for farming. WTF And about the sci-fi and the need for them. The first gundam established that the tech was derive from small nuclear reactor that emit minovsky particles. And that mess up with the redar and homing missiles. So the robot are humaniod shape for hand to hand combat with dump non homing missiles. Most non UC series did not have that. Except for may be Seed. Because without that part. War would be more efficient with just spacecrafts and long range missiles. The reactors size also limit the MS size to be quite big. Gundam has lost the sci-fi core and therefore the "real robot" genre that it started.

Gundam is the crack of Mecha anime, one hit and you are not letting go. I remember getting a Seed destiny episode DVD with a random ass toy and as soon as I saw the Impulse Gundam I fell in love (I was 7 now I'm 19)

As of now, I'm watching almost everything gundam-related in broadcast order, which for those out there who want an actual order of any long series is what I'd recommend. Otherwise I agree with you that we can just watch the things that caught out attention and start from there.
I'm currently at 0080 War in the Pocket and out of all the Gundam series I've watched, my favorite 1st episode definitely is 0079's, even with its flaws it's just so iconic. I'm hopeful that with all the Gundam series I have yet to watch, I'll find another 1st episode as great or even better than that one.

I'll always be a 8th MS Team fan because there's very little to no Newtype magic, plus its very grounded in reality.
Every single fight in 08th is won by complete and utter plot convenience and Shiro ever meeting Aina again is infinitely more convenient than any instance of Newtype magic in the series.
I love 08th, but please praise it for what it actually is, comments like yours are why I hated it on my first watch. The only thing realistic about the series is the animation, everything else is borderline Looney Tunes, not that far off from typical Gundam Looney Tunes, but regardless.
Im currently watching Victory Gundam and Im absolutely hooked with the series. Also, the late UC as a whole as some of the most underrated designs.

The first episode of the original series is almost perfect as it quickly establishes characters, the conflict, the factions, and importantly, the tone.
For me when I first watched Wing on YTV in 2000 (from Canada 🇨🇦) I was like WOAH when I saw Deathsythe. Then became hooked and seeing Wing Zero Custom in EW I was 😱 and then found the Gundam encyclopedia from 2002. Been hooked then took a break but Z and IBO got me hooked again. Now love the series and don’t plan on leaving ever again.

Imma be honest. WFM episode 0 was the only reason I got 5 episodes into the anime. If epidsode 1 was the first I saw I would have just walked away. Then for a YT comment to make me think that it somehow got better. I want those hours back.

I would describe the prologue as displaying the tone and aesthetic, and the first episode as setting the setting, stakes, rules and properly display the main gundam.
I don't mind if they show the Gundam in the last few minutes of the first few episodes as long at it's done properly. SEED Destiny's 1st ep for me. It screams massive potential. It even introduces my favourite Cosmic Era girl, Lunamaria. GSD almost have the opposing side aka the enemy of the previous war as the main characters and I really like it, I really do. ZAFT got the best looking uniform! But alas, as Kuai Liang says, such wasted potential (Mortal Kombat meme).

The Alex doesn't either, not even being activated until the penultimate episode when the Kampfer attacks.
Gundam Seed is still my all time favorite Gundam series, followed by Gundam 00 and Iron Blooded Orphans. I've seen them all, every Gundam show. I just love the themes in Seed, as it dives into the notion of what a soldier is and what it means to give up your agency, to follow orders and fight your moral and ethical stances. It has a rich cast of characters that struggle with this notion as it culminates into beautiful development all across the board - those who find agency, those who fights for it and those who give in to their orders and lose agency. All around greatness that just delivers a solid Gundam show.
Yeah SEED is one of my favorite AUs. It’s so overhated, but I really got invested in the story. I find it 3rd behind Universal Century and Gundam 00. I still need to see Gundam X and Turn A tho, and I heard those were amazing.

My favorite first episode of a Gundam show is the one for SEED Destiny.
I couldn't agree more with the the conclusion, I always tell my friends who are trying to get into it to just pick one that looks cool to them. The way that I see it, entry in the franchise is made in a way so that new people can hop in and have at least an understanding of the current events, although they'll miss out on some of the nuance and deeper understanding it'd still be a enjoyable experience, albeit only one that can be enjoyed at face value. P.S. The way you cut and edited this is masterful, those seamless transitions are on another level, especially at 3:50.

For me, the best gundam first episode is GUNDAM 0083. But the first episode of all time anime is EVA.
WfM's prologue episode got me interested.
The the first episode got me disinterested with the anime school shits. Ichirō at it again.
WfM has a mechanical designer from Fromsoft, powerful, competing megacorporations lording over the population and guess what? The premise got me expecting a story about mercenaries fighting for their employers, the corporations interests and the MC is callsigned or nicknamed Witch but it turns out to be, you know the end product. Tbh, Witch would've been a fine Raven's nickname. If you know the word Raven, then you know this mecha game.
Not to mention the anime has an arena, a game mode which the game franchise is known for.
Hint: Fromsoft.

That is what is currently happening within it. The president of the group literally almost gets assassinated in the first episode due to corporate infighting.

I somehow feel the urge to watch Turn A Gundam now.
To be honest, the Gundam shows that stuck with me the most, were the ones which didn't have a hero Gundam. Namely MS 8th Team and War in the Pocket. Because those shows are about the people, their lifes, relationships and the things they want to protect. It's a bit sad that these kind of shows are rare, because of course, Bandai has to make their hero Gundam badass because they want to sell us that plastic crack (and yes, I also fall victim to that). But still, in the end a good story/world building always wins over a cool hero Gundam.
I'm a bit halfway through Turn A and it is REALLY good! I can't recommend it enough, it might be my favorite!

I think it’s really good, one of the better AU series, although I felt that they set up a larger scope only to end on a small scale. It just felt dissonant in that factor. I do appreciate that it is so much different from other Gundam which makes it stand out.
Every Gundam's story seems surface level, and every Gundam expects the audience to be intelligent enough to figure out the nuances for themselves.
If you want Gundam to spell its nuances out for you, you're in the wrong franchise.

Just started a year ago. I would recommend the first Gundam show made with subtitles. Especially since you are probably familiar with Wing, so you already somewhat know what you are getting into. Or just choose a Gundam show with an interesting sounding premise. Series I wouldn’t recommend as a starting point are Zeta, ZZ, and Char’s Counterattack as they are all sequels to the original series and each other. Anything else is mostly fair game.

Gundam sure tricks me into wanting more...Gunpla. I wish its storytelling was better though. In my opinion, most Gundam stories are mediocre at best. I'd rather read a good book.
I got into gundam from gunpla. Mainly as cheaper toys by building it yourself.
I find most of the serious series really boring and repetitive. Some of the setting are so unreal. Like they are so poor yet they have these colossal robots just for killing each other. But never use them for farming. Melt the part down for metal to build the stuffs they need. Wing gundam have these beautiful sunset scene with farmers in the field but they have these giant robots but no smaller robots for farming. WTF
And about the sci-fi and the need for them. The first gundam established that the tech was derive from small nuclear reactor that emit minovsky particles. And that mess up with the redar and homing missiles. So the robot are humaniod shape for hand to hand combat with dump non homing missiles. Most non UC series did not have that. Except for may be Seed. Because without that part. War would be more efficient with just spacecrafts and long range missiles. The reactors size also limit the MS size to be quite big.
Gundam has lost the sci-fi core and therefore the "real robot" genre that it started.
