When I first saw GW, it hit me like a ton of bricks. We were absolutely starved for anime here in the early 2000s. Pokémon and Digimon dubbed in Dutch, and a mix and match of English-dubbed DBZ aired years after the US, that's about it. Once we got cable internet, I learned a bit about how the dubs changed and censored just about everything about DBZ. So when GW hit the airwaves here, it blew my mind. They actually kept the Japanese opening, and OMG, they even had Japanese moon runes on screen! The dub wasn't half bad either. For 14-year-old me, the dialogues about pacifism, the boys with crazy hairdos and the characters of Zechs and Treize in particular made me feel like I was watching something really deep and nuanced. There wasn't really any indication that it was basically a spin-off of a far greater franchise. Later on I stumbled upon the website 'Gundam Wing Sux' on Tripod that explained exactly what's wrong with GW (in that kind of early 2000s edgelord style that you had to be there for to understand - the site is still up, so check it out yourself) and suggested the UC stuff instead. Obviously that never aired here, and it took me a while to figure out how to 'borrow' anime from the internet, but when I did, I had to agree that it was the superior original. I couldn't force myself to sit down and rewatch all of GW now, but I can feel that nostalgia when I hear the music, and I appreciate GW as a gateway into the rest of the universe. I mean I can't really hate it when it was literally the only anime I could see on TV that didn't try to airbrush out the fact that it was made in Japan. Some other GW-related artifacts from my teenage years: emulating the Endless Duel SNES game! Just like I spent hours of my life watching GW that is kinda mediocre, so I spent many hours playing the hell out of that much maligned game, including with the multiplayer component added to one of the SNES emulators of the period. And that 'Space is the Place' Toonami promo that I found while looking for GW music on Kazaa Lite, that I didn't know the source of, but it's on UA-cam now. Shit makes me feel old.

I don't get why they didn't make each film 2 to 2.5 hours. The 0079 movies are a lot longer while compiling a smaller amount of source material. In A New Translation, it hurts especially the first movie, where a lot of character establishment is skipped in favour of quick flashbacks. I've actually seen the Zeta series before, but I still had trouble remembering what the hell was going on. I would call that a pretty damning indictment. The other two films do kind of sweep you up in the drama, but as a whole, this trilogy doesn't leave a very good taste in the mouth. Really a missed opportunity here to make something that can stand on its own like the 0079 movies. That's not a dig on the 0079 series by any means, but the movies do some things very well, especially since the series' ending had to be rushed so not all its themes could be explored very well, and there's quite a bit of filler even in those 43 episodes. Whereas Zeta comes with 50 episodes that may have some filler and some fat to trim here and there, but it's a very cohesive series overall, so it's hard to decide what to cut.

Well, f91 might come back in the long future since bandai is doing the UC Next 0100 project. But it'll probably take decades.

I remember watching this show as a kid and I still loved this show as an adult.

I probably die by the time Crossbone Gundam got it's animation adaptation but at least my grandkids could enjoy that masterpiece.

Ending sucks (at least in my opinion) because in the original anime Kamille literally got brain damage and left with Fa in order to become a doctor but since he doesn't got brain damage he'll probably fight until he died.

For me, OG, ZZ, UC, G, W (including EW), X, 00, G-Reco, AGE and G-Witch were happy endings.

Personally, I don't think that either Char or Amuro died. At least not in the traditional sense. Both were powerful newtypes and their newtypes ability, which has been getting closer to space magic like the force from star wars, have only been amplified by the Psycommu systems build into their mobile suits. So what I think happened is that in that moment, where they both put their differences aside to push Axis away from earth, that they basically transformed into beings of pure energy and left our current plane of existence to enter a higher plane of existence. But they didn't do this by having their physical bodies die, it's more like the kickstarted a kind of transformation/evolution that humanity might be able to do someday in the far future, you know? It's all very meta-physical, I know, but we know that when a Newtype dies, they don't necessarily "die" because their consciousness is still very much alive in another meta-physical realm... 'Cause we've seen Newtypes time and time again communicating with toher people even though they had previously "perished". It's like how in Star Wars, Force Users turn into Force Ghosts as they physical bodies die, you know? I'd have to re-watch Gundam Unicorn again but I think it ended with Full Frontal, who apparently had a piece of Char's soul in him, being confronted by the Force Ghost of Char Aznabel and after a brief exchange, Full Frontal returned that piece of Char's soul back to Char while also following him into the Meta-physical spirit realm of the Newtypes and Cyber Newtypes, leaving his physical body behind, now just an empty shell. So it would be kinda cool if at some point in the future, we had a Gundam show where our new protagonist gets a visit from the Force Ghost of Amuro, Char or both. I think that would be neat.

I really don't want there to be a remake of 0079. The original anime is good. Remakes should be for bad stuff, like cucuruz doan's island. Maybe somebody should remake Eiken, that anime had a good idea but bad execution. Ultimately, a remake of a good series will always be less interesting than making a new series, see for example, Legend Of The Galactic heroes Die Neue Thesis as compared with The Saga Of Tanya The Evil. What I'd like to see most is a sequel to Hathaway, I hear Hathaway was based on book 1 of a trilogy. And I'd also like to see another new Gundam anime, like IBO or WFM, but with slightly more restrained shots and cuts.

For me "A Wakening of the Trailblazer" is the perfect Gundam ending much like CCA. Not only because it provides a solid epilogue to the timeline, but because the film bookends Setsuna's character development in a way that is both logical and satisfying. >Setsuna: Let’s go, to their homeworld. We need to understand each other. >Tieria: Is that really a good idea? >Setsuna: It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad. It’s just… the meaning of life that I found. Regardless of the risks that entail, including the total destruction of humanity or even just himself, Setsuna proceeds to the ELS homeworld because of his unyielding belief in that communication and understanding is the only true pathway to peace. From a young naive child soldier who thought destruction was the only pathway to a brighter future (much like a certain SEED pilot), to a man who's willing to risk everything in order to connect with the "other". What a fantastically appropriate conclusion to Setsuna's character development.

4:41 I disagree regarding one specific very little point, Char and Amuro's reunion has an underlying tone of "he is Char, but, something is different" without being spoken, where as in the movie, Amuro is screaming Char's name, that is my only gripe with the scene

For me, one Gundam music moment that stood out was the track Innovation from 00 and how it was used to great effect with Sergei.

I'm 30. I've seen all kinds of anime. I recently watched Ashita No Joe. After one watch through its my favorite anime ever. It absolutely embodies the feeling of being a oucasted and lost youth with no hope in the world but to be left the fuck alone, and to discover something that makes your life feel worth living.

I remember a video strategy game about Gundams and other robots that we used to play perhaps on Nintedo or Sega that has all the Gundams and many of the Zeon characters. In that game they included both Chris' RX78 NT-1 and Bernard's MS-06 Zaku, in that game they were on the same team controlled by the player. Perhaps in some alternate ending Bernard did not die from the fight and survived the ordeal.

This ending has a beautiful set piece and moment. Though i prefer the end of encounters. That was very moving.

Of all the gundam shows i watched, wing was the one i genuinely blanked out for most of the tv series, if they lessened the number of main characters and focused on like 3 of them, they would've probably been able to make a far more compelling and comprehensive show. Tho this was definitely the most preachy gundam show, the ideas were good and the concepts were eventually reused for 00, and there i think the concept for gundam wing really shine. On the mecha side, the wing series, epyon and deathscythe were pretty much the only ones that really stuck with me on a design point. They really kept mecha designs simple, a bit too simple for most, wish they made use of that as a plot point since the early half felt like super robots fighting regular robots.

As a kid I really wanted to watch Wing and couldn't catch the episodes on TV so my dad started going out and buying them directly. The memories I have of watching Gundam Wing when I went to see my dad on school vacations are some of my happiest

ideon is straight up a Cosmic Horror story hidden in a Super Robot Anime. Because of the similarities, I always low key see Ideon as a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam, and the events of UC are what happens in the new universe that is created at the end of Ideon. New type powers/abilities are the result of the Id that permeate the universe at the end of Ideon as many of the things the Id could do/did are also the stuff we see Newtypes doing.
