That's something I think Evangelion did really well, despite its lack of focus on robot-fighting; the EVAs looked both terrifying and yet sleek & cool with great colour palletes

Even though I loathe Evangelion, I'm all for more unique mech designs. I just don't like those of EVA because of their super thin, lanky bodies and their sneakers. That said, it's true that they did colors right. Nice amount in nice proportions across the chassis.

It makes perfect sense that the war machines of gundam are both cool and terrifying. An that they're coveted and sold as model kits. That's literally what happens with real world war machines.

I think that there’s two ways to get into Gundam:
    1. The best/most effective way
    2. The easy/accessible way
Either way is completely valid depending on your experience with the mecha genre or your willingness to overlook dated visuals. For the the best way, it’s pretty obviously Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. That series is one of the classic anime of the 20th century that is super important for anime in general, and you hit two birds with one stone. And it’s still an entertaining show to this day, and it just makes everything else click into place as it explains the world really well, and there’s obvious next steps for the franchise.
For the easy way, it’s one of the AU series which helps you get your foothold in the mecha genre before knowing of the Gundam franchise is for you. For this option there is a couple of series, the big ones being 00 and Iron Blooded orphans, but Wing and Seed have their fans, but come less recommended.
I actually have not seen F91, because I’m relatively new to the franchise, but it does seem like an odd choice considering it seems to have similar problems to the 0079 compilation movies from what I can tell. I think that the compilation movies are adequate if you here about how good Zeta is and want to jump into that, but I generally prefer the series to the movies and find it more enjoyable.

Gundam is a franchise I do plan to check out when I have the chance, but since I normally don't like my entertainment TOO violent and there is FAR more Gundam content than I can possibly analyze all at once, and that there's so many other franchises I already like and will get into in the future, I think I will just watch a few Gundam shows and movies, and this is one of them! I also plan to watch the original 1979 TV series, the Gundam Wing series that aired on Toonami (in my country at least) and... I will see what else there is and decide what I shall and shall not watch. I hear Gundam Seed Destiny is bad, so I likely won't watch that one, yet I hear its GBA game is good! If an existing franchise has more content than (at least seemingly) you can watch in your lifetime, it can be hard to decide how to get into it. Had I watched the 4kids dub of One Piece back in the day, as bad as that is, I probably would've saved the time it'd take me to watch the story all over again when the Funimation dub arrived, just starting where the 4kids dub left off!

I love F91, it's really the only self-contained movie in the series except the compilation movies of 0083 and 08th MS Team. However, I think part of my enjoyment came from having watched all the previous entries in the series. F91 feels like the original series, Zeta, ZZ, and maybe Char's Counterattack mixed together, and watching those series first helps you "fill in the gaps" as it were, since F91 can be a bit confusing. In other words, watching those previous series will introduce you to tropes and ideas that F91 reuses and helps to understand the movie better. Heck, Seabook is like Amuro, Kamille, and Judeau rolled into one. It's a rewarding experience.
    Oh, F91 isn't a 13 episodes series squished into a 2 hour movie, it's a ~50 episode series squished into a 2 hour movie...
Hathaway is cool, but I'm honestly more excited for what comes after with the UC next 100 project.
I think After War Gundam X is also a good recommendation, at least for anyone that likes 90s adventure anime.

The watch order is only needed for UC, but I think even there it's optional, because all entries stand on their own as stories. Just start with whatever looks most cool and interesting. Or the first one for chronology. It's important to get the new watcher hooked with a good story.

I actually got friends of mine into Gundam with Gundam Unicorn. I honestly think F91 is a terrible place to start, because while I like the movie, its writing is iffy.
Edit* Also, Gundam has had plenty of well-written females. What the fuck are you talking about?

"In this day and age watching 42 episodes of a series..." I thought this day and age was the age of binging 5 seasons of whatever show in one week? How's it relevant what the show was originall released?
Cool video. Don't think the franchise is enough 'for me' to watch all of it, but a 2 hour movie tha definitely looks like it might be quite cool? Sure, why not.

    • @SelectScreen
      @SelectScreen  3 роки тому +5

It's certainly an interesting contradiction, because I think both are true. I think the length of a show factors in when trying to convince someone to watch a show in the first place, but the binging seems to only factor in once people actually start watching a show and get hooked. I think this counts doubly so for Gundam since the original series is such an old show and thus the artwork looks very dated. Personally, I love the way First Gundam looks, but especially a lot of younger anime fans don't like watching anything that doesn't look good by modern standards.

    • @KarolaTea
      @KarolaTea 3 роки тому

Oh yeah, definitely have to be interested in the first place to commit to a whole series. And the more time investment the more of a commitment it is ofc.
I'd say style is a case of tastes and preferences though. Whether it's old or new or shojo or shonen or hyperrealistic or whatever other styles are there.
I'd guess one reason people are more willing to invest into whatever new series is popular at the moment isn't just modern quality (which isn't always given anyway I'd guess, esp if we look past just anime), but more being able to participate in 'the discourse'. If the whole twitter timeline is GoT, well, might as well watch it too so I can at least get what people are talking about. I guess older series don't tend to have "everybody watching it at the same time and so everybody's talking about it" effect, but if it's a classic it'll probably come up in conversation too.

As a fan who has OCD and HAS to start at the beginning of everything whether its animes or metal bands discographies, my solution is easy. Theres plenty of lists of the shows in chronological order of release. Of shows, movies, OVAs. Go to the beginning. And work your way down. Ignore SD gundam and thats really it. The only out of place ones are the series of shorts that were kinda made periodically. Outside that its pretty comprehensive. Just go in expecting Gundams of the original to be like The Last Of Us or The Walking Dead where the zombies are really just the backdrop of the overall story. Also expect a pretty strict anti war message

I hate to be that SW fan… but I can’t help it. While the Neimoidains are voiced like Asian stereotypes plus their trade war screams yellow scare. The neimoidians actually are an allegory to US politics and I will never forgive Lucas for just making them racist instead.
It’s a brilliantly simple parody too. Nute Gunray > Newt Gingrich | Lott Dod > Trent Lott and Chris Dodd | Oje N’Deeb > Joe Biden.
Each one of those three main ones represents a different failing of US politics. It’s so good, just imagine if they spoke an alien language or really lay it on think and have them speak in a political cadence.

So when I started the UC timeline of Gundam last week I am currently watching in its chronological order starting with MSG: The Orign and following with the 0079 Movie Trilogy which in my opinion much better and stuck to the main plot. I just don't have to sit through monster/villains of the week fillers. When I get to Zeta then I will watch the series to its fullest because I heard the movies are not good and non-canon ending. Gundam ZZ to me is like the Spaceballs of the Gundam UC timeline with the slapstick comedy. I just might skip it and go straight Char's Counterattack movie afterwards. When it comes to my Gundam series especially the UC stories to be dark, gritty and a grounded military drama. I just have to go to Gundam Wiki to read the plot on ZZ..... Gundam F91 Movie continue the story in the manga or light novels. The oldest Gundam pilots protagonist in the Universal Century timeline is Shiro Amada(20) from The 08th MS Team and Stardust Memory Kou Uraki(19)....... This is what I am following!

Did you not start with the compilation movies of the original series? I started with the movies, and I got into Gundam just fine. Why do you think they don't represent Gundam well? It's the TV series but with most of the stupid and off-model parts cut out or fixed. And you called the ending rushed in the the TV series, and you're right, in the TV series it is not built up to enough. But in the third movie, it is built up to so well that I consider it one of the best endings in science fiction (not just SF anime). Also all of the flashbacks in later parts of the series reference the movies rather than the TV show (Sayla is always in the core booster when Lalah gets…um…you know).
And I would NOT recommend F91 for a first outing. You called the characters likable, but I found them all really hard to like, and that affected my enjoyment of the film. The visuals are stunning, but the plot leaves a LOT to be desired and the characterization is probably the weakest in all of Universal Century Gundam. I sometimes rewatch the movie for the visuals, but never for the plot or characters.
My suggestion would be to watch the compilation movies of the fist series (but not Zeta's compilations, just do the TV series of Zeta). It has a really rough start (which the TV series also shares), but even the first movie has emotional beats that hit hard like the section where Amuro meets up with his mom. The second movie is better than the first, and the third movie is just fantastic for a 1980 movie, series compilation or not. The problem, of course, is the extremely dated animation style which is also shared (even more so) by the TV series, the fact that the heroes are flawed and unlikable at first, and there are quite a few points where the plot drags. But everything comes together really well in the third movie. If you're too used to the TV series, you'll feel disappointed that some parts are cut out, but that won't affect first-time viewers. And the movies make you extremely invested in the characters by the end, something that F91 just does not do.
Finally, I am not really sure there were bad ratings for the original TV series. Another UA-camr dug up an interview with Tomino who said that the ratings weren't bad, so he was surprised by the too--quick cancellation. It was the toys that were not selling, not the show itself. Like Robotech in the US a few years later, the fans of the series were too old to want the toys, which is why the plastic model kits sold so much better for Gundam (Robotech didn't profit from the model sales.)

Sawano’s music huh, In that case the series and movies with his music are Unicorn, Narrative and Hathaway, which are unfortunately a good bit down the line of the main UC timeline so you’ve got a bit of watching to do.
      Here’s the main timeline:
Original series (or three compilation movies) > Zeta > ZZ (double zeta) > Char’s Counterattack > Unicorn > Narrative > Hathaway. From then on you can go on to F91 and Victory.
As of writing this, Netflix currently has the three original compilation movies, Char’s counterattack Unicorn and Hathaway. This of course depends on your region. You’ll miss out on Zeta and ZZ but you can probably understand whats going on with what’s there.
You could start with Unicorn straight away and work your way back, like I did, but it’s probably a better experience if you go chronologically
