How to install a 24v, 60 amp trolling motor receptacle on a boat. I'm restoring this old Ranger 330-V bass boat. When I bought the boat, it was missing the trolling motor receptacle. I'll show you how I wired one up.

I have a StarCraft Superfisherman and the trolling motor is wired the same way. I was confused when I saw the four wires instead of two. My batteries are not in series to make 24v. The plug assembly, as in this video converts both 12v leads into 24v at the front of the boat. This setup is works great because it allows you to wire other 12v items at the front. I wired my Minn Kota GPS to one 12v side and my second sonar to the other. Made live easy. Both 12v items have inline fuses and both batteries have Rig Rite circuit breakers on the positive posts. Weird setup but it works.

Unfortunately, there’s not an easy way to attach a photo in the comments section or else I would. The Ranger owner’s manual has a diagram of battery wiring that might help.
Are you still using a jumper wire on your batteries to make it 24 volts??
No- the boat is still wired the way Ranger wired it at the factory. There are four wires going to two batteries. The 24v jumper is inside of the plug receptacle.

How would you wire it for just one battery that is already 24v. I was trying to listen but still confused since u talk about 2 battery’s wiring it for make 24v at 5:05 in your video.
If you are trying to power a 24 V trolling motor and you have a 24 V battery then you would only need to have two leads- one positive and one negative running from the battery to the trolling motor. If you have two 12 V batteries, then you have to wire them in series to power a 24 V trolling motor.
I've just bought another boat the, trolling motor has the 4 wire set up. I've got two batteries with a hot and ground on both. I'm not getting full power to my trolling motor. Seems to be just 12 volts. How ate your 4 wires hooked to your battery? Is there a jumper on the battery? Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I ran 2 wires and a jumper and hard wired to the trolling motor. Got full power that way.
I have two ranger bass boats. One of them has the four wire set up going up to the front trolling motor plug. Inside the trolling motor plug that hooks to the trolling motor plug receptacle is a jumper. It can be either 12 or 24 V. It was wired from Ranger this way at the factory. My other boat has the 24 V set up and it has a jumper wire between the two batteries to have them run in series and I have one hot wire and one ground running the length of the boat up to the trolling motor for 24 volts. either set up will work. The four wire set up just gives you the option of having a 12 V or 24 V connection at the trolling motor receptacle.
I have the same receptacle, motor and plug but only two wires coming from my batteries on a 2008 Nitro. How should I proceed?
This particular receptacle is designed to be for 4 wire 12 or 24 V. If your boat is wired up already to have 2 wire, 24V going to the front receptacle , then you should use a receptacle that is designed for a 2 wire, 24 V system. Marinco makes another receptacle rated for 24 or 36V that you can connect with 2 wires. Here's my video on that: ua-cam.com/video/yTsxrmkMnqQ/v-deo.html You want to pay attention to the amperage rating of the plug and receptacle. If you try to wire them up in a way other than designed, that would affect the amperage rating. You don't want to melt stuff or cause a fire.
What size ring terminal did you use to connect the wire to the receptacle? I assume 3/16 but want to make sure before I order my cables.
I have a multi sized set of ring terminals that I bought online. I just pulled from that set as I was working, so I don’t recall the exact size I used.
There’s no cover for the plug? Wouldn’t there be a lot of water and corrosion risk?
Yea, that plug doesn’t come with a cover. I always leave my trolling motor plugged in, so I don’t worry about it. You could put some dielectric silicone grease on the plug when installing to prevent corrosion.
Very interesting. Im installing the same setup. 24V motor with the same plugs. Looks very easy, But which battery would you put a circuit breaker on?
I have two circuit breakers and two batteries. One on each positive lead going to the receptacle. Yep- it was a quick, easy install.
@@ProWrenching OK cool, but if you were to connect the batteries in series, then you would only have a pos and a neg going to the receptacle. In which the breaker would be connected to the pos side only. In your case, the receptacle does the work for the series connection, which is why Im thinking, only battery A, or B needs a breaker off the positive terminal. I could be wrong Im no electrician.... But nice vids very helpfull.
@@choppers1003 the boat was wired that way with two circuit breakers, by Ranger Boats. Ranger has wiring diagrams in the owners manuals that you can access online. Really appreciate you watching! Let me know if this answers your question.
Also- I think you’re right, that one circuit breaker could do the job of protecting it, however you have the positive leads from that battery running all the way thru the boat unprotected. I’m not an electrician either, so I stuck with the way Ranger did it!
How do you hook up just 2 wires to that receptacle? I have a jumper on the batteries and only two wires running to the receptacle
What do ya do with all the excess wiring from the trolling motor
The wiring was the wiring from inside the Ranger boat behind that front dash plate. I connected that wire to the receptacle. I didn't have to add any wire. It was just enough length to give me the working space to remove the dashplate and the old receptacle. After the repair, I tucked the wires back into the boat behind the dash plate.
So i wired it that way but the black wire is getting 0.03 and all the others when i test get 12. Any ideas why?
The four wires on my boat- the colors and the voltage are based on the factory wiring from Ranger. If you are getting different voltage readings at the receptacles you may want to go back and make sure that the wires on the battery are in the right locations.
Well it was working before on the old connector always put out 12V so we went to a 24V since the trolling motor is a 24V and thats when this started.
But will check everything again

Why do we have four wires instead of just two?
That’s the way the boat came wired from the factory, giving people the option of connecting either 12 or 24 V trolling motor.
I am hopefully replacing old recepticle that has the four wires with a new one that does 2/3 wires
I use 2 batteries with jumper wire and run 24v

What size circuit breaker are you using on this setup
It has the Ranger factory circuit breakers which are 40 amp on each positive lead going up to the receptacle.
