I’m sorry the challenge is coming to an end as I enjoy seeing you every morning. Your practical advice is insightful. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

I don't want this series to end, it's my comfort YT place during the summer (Argentina). I'm not a quilter, I have never made a quilt but I love all your videos

  • @paula6477

The concept I'm taking away from this series is FIRST determine how much space you have. This is a new way of thinking for me and it has already made a difference!

  • @poodlegirl55

When I was young everyone in my family, church etc used plain muslin for quilt backs. Or else you pieces together some large scraps. I think I was 40 years of age before I knew that people bought pretty fabric for backs. I don't use muslin anymore but I still use pieces of cotton fabric from thrift stores and add what I need to add to make them big enough. I am 68 so I guess I am just an old school American quilter who is still a scrappy quilter.

I use skirt hangers and hang my yardage pieces in a closet. It makes it easy to pull those pieces out and "audition" them for a project. I also label them by size and organize them left to right by length of cut smallest to largest. That way I have a general idea how much I have even before I pull them out of the closet. It helps tremendously to keep them neat and organized and also results in very little need for ironing. I used to use the comic boards, but found myself spending more time folding, wrapping and ironing fabric than I wanted to. This works great for me, I hope it can help someone else, too.

My goal this year is not buy any fabric unless it’s for something special.

  • @Tina-rj7qe

Your videos are great. You have just the right amount of energy and throw in some humour as well. A big thank you from me!

  • @carolynhowe9223

I store my backing fabrics on heavy duty hangers on a closet rod😀

  • @carmenbailey1560

I have no problem here because I don’t have the space to store wide back I go out or order them when my quilt tops are done. So with that being said I guess there is of a bit a blessing for a smaller sewing space. I have got into the habit of putting measurements on leftover batting. Thanks Karen for sharing your tips. 👍❤️😊

Great series. After watching this challenge for the past few years, I finally did something about my sewing space. Thank you for all your tips. My space is now just that, space for quilting. Tools organized and in the right places. Unwanted items discarded or donated.

  • @mamag9421

Thank you Karen for this series of videos. My goal 2023 was to use what fabric I had on hand, but what I had (& I had ALOT) was spread out, buried or difficult to access. So not much got used. You're helping me rethink my fabric hoard & toss or pass on a good deal of it. The rest I have organized so I can actually see what I have on hand & use it! I tip my hat to you!!

  • @mojosbigsticks

If you have it, use it is great advice. When the declutter is over, I'm going to open that bottle of champagne!

  • @shelleyopland4041

My 3rd year doing the declutter challenge. There is more to be done but my space is so much better now. I’ve cleared out much by either donating fabric and by making quilts to donate. Thank you for your common sense insight and inspiration.

I decluttered my cutting island during the holidays. This is where I hold my yardage not on bolts. I didnt think of measuring it but I wished i did. What I did do was take a snapshot of each pile that I put back in the island. Out of sight is out of mind for me. Now I have a reminder of what is in there. Next year when i pull it all out i will guesstimate how much is in that nicely folded yardage and pop a note on it. I am sewing stash this year. I hope to make a large dent in this carefully curated hoard of yardage. Thanks Karen for poping into our homes to help us think about our sewing practice.

  • @robinbrown5256

I created a spreadsheet listing fabrics greater than 2m. I list the colour, a description, the yardage amt, and which container the fabric is in (the containers are numbered). When I need a large piece of fabric, I check the spreadsheet. I can search and sort the spreadsheet. I also take photos of the fabric in the containers.

  • @sandraalston4245

If you have an empty filing drawer, you can fold your fabric over several hanging file folders. It is easy to see exactly what’s there. This works especially well with a lateral filing cabinet.

  • @dawnesmith-sliming7004

“….. write it on the selvedge”. 🤯 I didn’t want to bother pinning bits of paper to fabrics and my stickers were always falling off. I will be writing on the selvedge from now on!

  • @FoD1975

Genius - putting those canvas boxes on their sides so that you can see what’s in them! 👍🏻⭐️ I have those boxes, but never thought to do that! 😂 Will we get to see the quilt that you have on the long-arm?! Looks like scrappy strips…! Thanks, Deb x 🤗

  • @rebeccafoster-faith6647

I bought yardage one time thinking it would be backing "someday" and it took up so much space - I vowed never again. Now I only buy yardage to be quilt top. It hasn't slowed my purchasing - but everything is "top worthy" even if it gets used on a back.
