I loved the moment where you put the sewing ham away “shoves into overstuffed cupboard”. All sewers have too much stuff even if they declutter every year.

Papercrafters, do, also. So Many Goodies! Which leads to So Much Stuff!
Last year's challenge taught me to keep on top of it. If I'm wanting to spend time in there, but don't really feel like starting on a project, I declutter, even if it's just one drawer, cubby unit, or one shelf in the closet.
Having to help clear out my folks house a decade ago, also helps me keep it up. Now, I need to help my hubby to get his closet manageable. His wood shop and model trains are areas I won't even touch. It's not completely organized, but, he knows where things are, so. I'm not about to mess with anything. I just make sure to put screwdrivers, pliers and hammers away when I'm done using them.😏

The wonderful thing about these challenges is that over time I find less and less clutter accumulates because having done the challenge. I'm more aware of what is clutter, and you've trained yourself to get rid of the unwanted easier. Thanks Karen.

I like to turn my traditional ironing board around, setting the point end to my right. The iron rests on the point leaving the rectangle end open for a large wool mat, with plenty of space. A seam ripper, tweezers and a tape measure are also attached to the board with a ribbon

Today I say goodbye to my first Panasonic Cordless Iron. It has been cleaned numerous times and has lately begun to spit discolored water from the steam holes. I have an Oliso but I can't stand the cord. Time to break into that stash of holiday gift cards and get a new iron and a new 6 x 24 ruler.

What an excellent way to use your gift cards! How long have you had your cordless iron? Got mine 2 years ago. I'm experimenting and not putting water in it because I want to see how much of a difference it makes. Everyone says water/steam shortens the life of your iron. I've had many over 40 years

I noticed in one shot your wool mat on a cutting mat. I did that on a corner of my mat, which was on the table next to my sewing machine. I warped the cuttibg mat. So now I have moved the apparatus to my big cutting table with a top that does not warp, and i stored the smaller table to use as needed for FMQ. The bigger table now is also on bedrisers and covers dog crates. I had to move crates out of bedroom because of allergies. But they sit comfortably under table and I store my frequent use rulers on top of them. My other rulers have an "apartment" in my one storage closet along with other tools, patterns, books, planned projects in storage containers, my batting roll and a small 3 drawer unit for extra pubs, sewing machine and hand needles and things like glue, starch and basting spray. It is a small closet so I have to keep everything under control by using shelving units, stacked crates and the original shelf. It works because it has to and it makes me evaluate before I buy more. All fabric is stored in 8 three drawer plastic units and one bureau. I am at capacity, so i can not buy more until i use up what I have. My fabric is mostly leftovers from my or other people's projects. So it will be used for scrappy projects for charity or myself. I stopped processing leftover fabric into quilt sized strips and squares as it just did not work for me. I cut as I go on a specific project now. I sometimes think a bigger space would be nice but I know I would then have license to just accumulate. So i am trying to do the projects i am really interested in and stop following the " must have trail" of stuff I don't have room or time for. I am beginning to know my likes and time constraints better now. I will never be the quilter that is so precise and competes in shows etc. But I happily share what skills I do have with orhers. But I fail sometimes, i am human. I know there are things in that room that should go but after decluttering now for 3 years in this challenge. I am not all that bad.

I repurposed my old cutting mat and rulers to my husband, he thinks they are great in his workshop. The mat he uses as a worktop saver and the ruler with the nicked corners is good enough for his use. Just because they were not in a good enough condition for my needs didn’t mean they couldn’t be used elsewhere. My last cutting mat got warped with the heat from a laptop. It was on the dining room table and my daughter was doing uni work and sat the laptop on top of it. It doesn’t take much heat to warp them, now I’m very careful about anything going on top of them because decent mats aren’t cheap.

Hello Karen and craft friends, When decluttering the IKEA chest of thin drawers in which I have my scissors and other quilting supplies I knocked something out of the drawer and it fell to the back underneath of the bottom-I had to look up how to pull the bottom drawer all the way out to retrieve everything that had somehow gotten there. But now notions are declutterred: scissors, rulers, threads, and all. I need that 30 minute sewing time!

I absolutely love my Creative Grids rulers and despite VERY regular use most days I have never damaged any edges . I have had some collisions with corners from my rotary cutter but even after 5 years use the edges are still intact with no sign of damage. I store them on the ruler racks , wooden with the grooves , except for 10" and above unless I can place the rack against a wall for added support . It works for me so this year I don't need to do anything. Cutting mats live on my table and despite them getting some sun my answer is to have a quilt to cover the table when not in use. It seems to work for me.

I’m marking the back of my door with what ruler goes where by outlining them with a sharpie and writing what I call them. I hook them on command hooks. I did that before we moved too and found that in the dry air of a desert the command adhesive lasts about 3 years with regular use. If they don’t have a hole to hook them up with I drill one. Place tape on the front and back where you’re drilling, and don’t press too hard with the drill. Works great

I hang my rulers and rotary cutters on a peg board beside my cutting mat. Easy to find the one I wish to use. On the other end is where I iron. Scissors hang here. I have a container holding the starch, glues and various tools. These tops were two cutting stations that are now joined and each has shelves. Ironing area has the silicon mats so stuff doesn’t stick to my iron. The light box sits on this shelf too as it’s near to the electrical source. I love watching this declutterring and noticed just how many items need to go elsewhere. Our thrift shops don’t take any electrical items unless they have a current safety tag on them. So I hang onto them and give to friends in need.

Rulers: I finally found what works for me: I have most on a shelf close to my cutting mat, standing up in groups of rectangles, squares and specialty rulers. I use napkin holders; the kind where your napkins stand up. The 24” long ones stand in a slot between cabinets. I also stand there the old cutting mats that I use for other crafts, such as when I need to use my hot glue gun, or stick glue for appliqué, or cut through poster board, or other things that mean I’m pressing harder and don’t want to use my good cutting mat.

The other specialty ones are in zipper pouches stored in a 3 ring binder. (The simple quilter Michelle) was the best hack no jumbled mess in the drawer and protected corners. I eventually would love to have exact rulers for squaring up but it seems I can’t settle on block sizes. I dread HST’s so the rulers for those would be great. I learned 3 years ago on protecting and cleaning with your challenge. The very big mats used to be hung behind my door now they are under my spare bed cleaned before putting away. Your challenge is the best because it encourages us to keep our areas manageable and stirs the juices. Thanks

But I have let go of some UFOS and fabric pieces I don't care about anymore. (Years ago I bought blue fabric with white daisies from JoAnn Fabrics. Loved that fabric and I bought a log of it - different size daisies l, etc. I have made many projects with it, but still gave WAY too much left.
