Thank you for bringing up the endangered species laws. I hope through fashion we can show that what we produce can have a negative effect and we just have to be more creative. Oh, how I wish I could wear a hat everyday!

Thank you for doing this episode on hats! As the founder of the Mobile Millinery Museum here in Canada, I am doing my best to revive an interest in hat-wearing. I want to share with you my thoughts on one of the reasons antique bird and feather arrangements should not be sold. Many still contain arsenic which was used in the taxidermy and preparation of millinery adornments. I would be happy to share a recent article I wrote about it (Arsenic and Old Hats) for an antiques and collectibles magazine. There are health concerns and protocols for the handling of these wonderful artifacts. Again, thanks for your wonderful video on hats!

“”The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” has the lead, her mother and several important women characters NEVER leaving the house without a proper hat to match their ensemble. Great timing for this episode as I drool over their fashions. Loved it! 🎩 👒

Years ago my grandmother worked making and selling hats in a department store named Millers. This is a story passed down to me as a child. I’m 72 now. I loved the 50’s as I recall my mother’s hat collection. Can’t forget the little white gloves we all wore. Thanks for the memories.

🎯 I just left a comment about the missed opportunity to show more Royal hats over the century .
After all, there are 2.5 BILLION citizens of the Commonwealth who miss our beloved late Queen who graced us with more photos of hats than anyone else in the history of the world .
She was also the ULTIMATE feminist.
I think Doris could do a whole episode on Blow & Treacy.
      What a great story!

Yes! Let's hear it for those modern-day milliners who are creating such beauty at a time when their efforts are underappreciated. Celebrity milliners like Treacy are wonderful, but there are many unsung millinery designers who need our support. Two of my faves are British Columbia designer Maria Curcic and Toronto's Karen Ruiz at Lilliput.

I got a Halston label vintage hat from my local "free book box" when I lived in Brooklyn! I had to remove the tarnished bent up metal ring embellishments (though they must have looked so cool once!) and put a put a bow on it instead. I get compliments every time I wear it, and it's wool so it's actually practical! In the past women would change up their hats' decorations and embellishments throughout the season as an affordable way to keep up with the absolute latest fashions! It's also interesting to learn about hygiene and hair care in past decades and how hats helped to hide unwashed hair so you could prolong the life of an expensive and time-consuming professional hairstyle (another important class signifier at the time). Our current access to hot water and our current low-maintenance hairstyles (to match women's busier schedules) are probably the biggest factors in why hats aren't as popular anymore. However, this is actually still very much a factor in black culture! Many of my black friends and coworkers have said multiple times that they'd LOVE IT if hats and head coverings came back in style so it'd be easier to stay stylish between salon appointments.

Doris, it is so good to see you, and I am loving this hat episode. So many good hat memories came bubbling up. I am the daughter of a beautiful mother who was extra stunning wearing the hats of the 1930s, 40s 50s and some of the 60s. I was child of the 1950s, and mom would bring out her hatboxes on rainy days so I could play at being a grown up lady wearing her fabulous hats. My dad was a tall, slim guy that could wear a fedora like nobody's business. Men look so special in hats. When I lived in Texas, I bought each of my brothers a Stetson that they had steam fitted and styled to what they thought was their look. That was back in the 80s, and they keep those hats in the original hat ox when they aren't wearing them. I have a small collection of hats I really enjoy wearing, and I love the looks and compliments that go along with the wearing. And, hats are the best for bad hair days....

What a fabulous tour of your collection! I have collected for 30+ years but for my own enjoyment only. I was asked to display hats for a Mad Hatter Tea charity event 20+ years ago when a woman attending gave me a hat. My research indicated it was from approx. 1850-1860, very good condition apart from a few splits in the ruched silk. No mold or other fabric deterioration. No provenance was offered, and I assumed that the donor knew nothing or she would have said something. I call hats “Art for Your Head.” “Nape hugged” is a new term for me. Thank you for giving it a name. And for your videos, which add so much to our understanding of fashion. It’s not just a business; it’s a calling.

I love my collection of vintage (and not-so-vintage) hats and try to wear them often. Fun fact about hat boxes: there's a scene in "How to Marry a Millionaire" where they come back from a shopping spree at Bergdorf's, but the hat box (one of which I own) -- and all the clothing boxes-- have the brown plaid design of Saks Fifth Avenue! These days I try to knit my own vintage hats and matching vintage sweaters. Hope you're feeling well, Doris.

Fascinating as always. I would like to see an episode that explores the relationship of popular or hit music for which a decade is known for and fashion. For example, music from the 20s and the flapper’s attire which allows to dance to that music. Another fashion that comes to mind is street wear and hip hop music. One can also think of the great bands music and how fashion followed the form that music suggested. One movie that resonates is Laura with its award-winning music and how the fashion in the film fits the music’s movement.

Hi Doris , lovely to see you looking so well! What an amazing episode. I clicked so eagerly.
I have always been interested in hats and have had several over the years. Many have not understood the allure but a hat really says so much about you and completely finishes an ensemble in a terrific way.
Admittedly I am a lover of cloches as they are easy to wear but hats are amazing from the most humble hat that servants would wear to the brilliant architectural pieces that only the most wealthy could obtain they have always delighted me!
(I have been away due to illnesses but I'm back enjoying your episodes again. Thankyou!)

    Hello Doris,
I wish we still wore hats too but the down side or rather the upside is we would have to veer away from our super casual clothing style to something much nicer!

I'm sorry it wouldnt let me edit my silly comment below, to add thank you for sharing your beautiful collection with us. The hats look great on you too, not everyone can carry a hat as well as you do. I think its your lovely bone structure to be truthful and, your instinctive grasp of how they look best on you. Great video.

Doris my hat story occurred in the 70’s in NY . My sister who had a boutique and I were walking by a store with hats in the window . We thought that we might be able to sell them , so we walked in . I remember seeing hats on blocks there. We ordered two hats , our heads were measured and we picked out colors . Since these were custom orders the hats would be shipped . The man who helped us said to call if needed . So , I called weeks later about them . A woman answered the phone , I asked to speak to Herman , she answered me with an indignant voice and said “ You mean Mr. Herman “ ! Since this was so long ago I googled to see if they still made hats and they do . I wonder now which Mr. Herman took our order !

Thank-you so much for this episode! So much information and inspiration! I love hats! I make my own mainly in the style of the 40ies and 50ies from second hand materials- without hat blocks and professional tools, simply with a wet cloth and a hot iron "on my hands and knees". Millinery is such a relaxing meditative thing to do plus I really like to wear hats.
