- Hello The Way We Wore Fans,
Are you guys ready for 2022? Well, even if you have some trepidation here is a video to spark your 2022 Fashion History Interests. Doris in this video talks about the corset, which has been in existence since the 16th century, while underpinnings have been in existence since 300 B.C. going all the way back to ancient Egypt. There are several forms of corsets from stays, which are fully boned and known to create the cone shaped silhouette of the 16th century, jumps which are made from fabric but not boned (usually) helps with shape, corselets which are more of a belt that showcase the waist, girdles which are more in the 20th century to create more of an s-shape. Lingerie is the foundation of all fashions. Today we wear the foundations as actual fashions from designers Vivienne Westwood, Mugler, Gaultier, and Versace. We hope you enjoy this episode on the anatomy of fashion.

What I always find so interesting is that men throughout the ages have also worn 'shape wear' in some guise or other! In any case, thank you Doris, another great episode, and you're looking so beautiful and glam also xoxo
The only underpinnings I own - Spanx - are a far cry from their counterparts of yesteryear! While I’m grateful for the greater comfort, I admire the femininity, charm and sexiness of some of the items worn by the women who preceded us.
There’s also something magical about using items of a bygone era, and I appreciate the superior craftsmanship compared to many of today’s cheap, mass produced items.
I watched the Iris Apfel documentary and thought of this when she lamented the loss of craftsmen, artisans and weavers of fine fabrics and other hand crafted goods. Life was simpler, slower, more elegant and gracious then. Of course, I’m romanticizing and idealizing, but restoring a bit of that seems like a good idea.
what a lovely comment
I completely agree with you and with King Layton. Those reasons are precisely why I became “addicted” to vintage in general. Thanks for writing Juliette. I appreciate you.
Doris
A well fitted corset is incredibly comfortable.
Super informative! Love how the clothing is displayed in a split screen. It helps me to understand the details and complexity of all of the things that you feature. Sound and the production value are fabulous. Keep up the good work guys 💕💕💕
Doris videos not only informative but also relaxing ASMR.
The best thing about corsets is taking them off 😆 brilliant as ever Doris and team 💜
🤣🤣 I agree! Thanks Katherine.
Doris
Amazing pieces as always. The black and metallic red Westwood piece is gorgeous.
Doris, you look marvelous and robust and this was a treat on a cold Indiana night. Love to you and all your team
You are really rocking your own look. You are fabulous. You have never been more beautiful. Good for you . You have come back strong and stunning. Truly an inspiration. Happy New Year.
Hi Doris, allow me to say that you look fantastic in this outfit. Very elegant. Bravo!
that westwood black and red velvet is stunning!
Absolutely love these videos. I learn so much from you and staff. I hope you continue to make these wonderful videos
Thank you thank you for uploading I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos and I rewatch the old ones all the time and I look forward to the new ones with great anticipation💚💙🖤💜🌈 hope your doing well! You look great Doris !!
As someone who has rented furniture for movies in Chicago, I think a interesting video would be some of your clothing you have rented out. Also the negatives and positive experience you have in doing so. Do pieces come back damaged? More than one piece for different movies? Would be a fun video.
Your looking fab love what you are wearing very cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ,,love the corset look such an iconic silhouette this segment was made for Dita you 2 work so well together
YOU LOOK STUNNING!! I can see you are feeling amazing it is radiating even through the cyber waves of the internet!
miss you so much Ms. Doris
Thank you for sharing your collection! I left off bras in favor of corsets almost 20 years ago and I would never go back to the days of straps making grooves in my shoulders and horrid shape wear with plastic boning that warps and digs and rolls down.
Those antique stays and bodies you have are stunning!
I would love for Doris and Prior Attire to chat on this subject and show their antique corsets. Doris is providing a great overview of historical corsets and how they’ve morphed into modern fashion
How far we have come but how much we have lost. Fabulous
So well put!! 👏🏼👏🏼
I love your necklace and I love this topic. I'm not very informed when it comes to underpinnings and this was just a great history lesson and fashion history lesson. Thanks for sharing.
You look especially lovely in this fascinating episode.
I Thankyou & Cheers!
Hi Doris, The 1830's stays you showed were never boned but always corded. They were also worn with a wooden busk in the front channel for support and posture. The busk is missing from your example.
I really appreciate this information Frederik. I have very little experience with items pre-1900 and most of the information I gathered was from researching online. I believe I mentioned my lack of knowledge in this area in the beginning (if it wasn’t edited out). Many thanks for your gracious way of informing me.
Doris...saw your contributions in an old hat book...so Exciting !!
I have no fashion sense at all, but I have enjoyed watching and learning from you Doris. I view clothing items so differently now, more as art and the function behind it than just what it is on the outer surface.
Wishing you a happy new year. I really appreciate the sophistication of this channel and your knowledge is always inspiring! Thank you so much to all your team. The Vivienne Westwood suit was marvelous. All the best of luck in the new year, wishing everyone vibrant health, unbounded creativity, voting rights, joy, world peace, love , abundance and an expansion of your message of recycling.
That silhouette drawing is great ..that is something you should copy and sell ...I definitely would buy one .. PLEASE think about it....... Your episodes are never long enough....
..
cords are much kinder to the body and nature 😍
so many beautiful pieces!! the depth and scope of your knowledge and insight is just mind boggling
I love your fashion history episodes, so interesting, especially seeing the examples from the eighteen-twenties/thirties.
Hi Doris, I so enjoy your videos! I LOVED the show by the way!! I am first impressed with how fantastic you look and I love your hair! Secondly, I am impressed with how sweet you are even after being so successful and dealing with important people in LA. Lastly, I am impressed with how much you know about the designs! What a dream job! I just wish you the best and so much happiness!
Really enjoyed this video. I find corsets very inspirational. I myself have incorporated them in my designs
You look FANTASTIC!!!!
Really interesting I’ve been lucky to see historic costume wear it’s wonderful to see the hand stitching
Thank you so much very informative as a teacher of fashion for El Paso Community College and my love for FASHION. I really appreciate all your information and with your permission I will show this video to my Fashion Draping Class, I really love all your information and knowledge hope one day I can visit your store thank you again
Thanks sooo much for sharing! ❤️❤️❤️
Doris, you look BEAUTIFUL. How are you feeling these day? Happy New Year.
Great episode, Doris! Question for you - why do you feel that corsets are still so popular in 2022? Personally, I think it’s because as a historical style, they have an element of nostalgia and romance. They’re also extremely flattering to the body. But of course, not the most comfortable garment to wear! I loved hearing about Chanel in the 1920’s and how women liberated themselves from the corset! But they always have a way of coming back into fashion. Keep up the great content!
Always so educational.
You look fabulous. So pretty. I love your dress. Great episode! Those 200 year old corsets were beautiful. I would love to work in your store. If only I lived in LA. I’m in awe at some of the articles of clothing you bring in every episode. Thank you for sharing them.
Hi, late as ever, I just found your channel and love it! I just got my first proper corset today (I actually got it on Thursday I think but put it on for the first time today). I have had to wear a proper medical, steel (not boning, more like struts that were bent by a machine and held me in a very specific way, for a year, following a bad horse accident...we were both ok but she rolled over me giving me pelvic avulsions due to the ligaments and tendons being pulled off the pelvic bones) I found today much more comfortable than expected but, I am following the advice from Orchard Corsets as they very kindly, have videos covering everything corset related. Loving your channel Doris!
I love all the information helps me with my book
Thank you for the educational content.
This is fascinating! Thanks! Happy New Year!🎊
Thank you so much for this channel
I love corsets and this was such an informative video! Thanks for sharing for knowledge and pieces!
Doris you are a jem! Watching your collections always brightens my day!
Happy New Year! I purchased a Betsey Johnson corset 90s. Pink and black silk.
so interesting 🧐
Feliz Año Nuevo 🎊🎈🎆 desde Morelia en mexico saludos Doris 😘
I adore your videos, Doris! They are so so informative - you are such a darling to teach us and show us your beautiful pieces of art 😍!
Greetings from Venice - Italy
Doris your knowledge of fashion is fabulous! Thank you so much for sharing it as well as your beautiful pieces!
Thank you so much for your content ❤️
Very interesting upload. Would it be possible to keep your examples on screen a bit longer ? I wanted to get a better look perhaps it would make the program too long. I very much enjoyed your upload .
Enjoyed this episode. Doris you look fabulous.
So glad to have found you again. I randomly caught your tv show years ago and absolutely loved it ❤
A few more resources on the history and construction of corsets and stays are you tube Bernadette Banner, Cathy Hay, and Abby Cox. They have a ton of great content about costuming history!
Fascinating as always. Thank you so much. I’m addicted to hats. Is it possible to do one on maybe men’s influence on women's hats? Love your posts so any topic is fine by me!
You and me and corsets. I have so many.
love ur neckpiece btw =] 💜
Great job!
Great show
Thank you for sharing.
Mugler was in his own league 😍😍
What is the name of the book?
I wear corsets with steel boning. They are fitted to my body. They feel comfortable and supportive. When people tell me how uncomfortable corsets are it’s usually someone who has never worn one or they’ve only worn a cheap plastic boned corset that wasn’t made for their measurements. Same for bras. I don’t understand how women wear bras that are so uncomfortable. I don’t find my bras uncomfortable. I don’t even feel them when I have them on. But I’m careful about the sizing . Wearing the correct size makes or breaks the comfort for me.
That’s a really fantastic point Phoenix. Thanks for your note!
Doris
Beautiful
I am big fan of u mam
does anyone know the name of the book she mentions at 9:57
Could you possibly link your website in your UA-cam account info page on your main profile. It would be handy! Thanks in advance.
🥰
I have been wearing corrsetts over my clothing since the 80’s and got made fun of.
stop wearing big clunky necklaces that rub on your mic... either dont wear such big necklaces or put the mic on your shoulder or use a mic on a stand
Thanks for your suggestion. But I’m confused by your tone. Are you mad at me?? 😉
🏳️🌈👍😍👌🏾🧕🏿🦹🏾♂️
Such a shame there's so much in this video that's just plain wrong. The 1830s stays (and yes, they're stays) are missing the broad wooden busk, and were rarely boned at all. Most of the things you show as corsets aren't.
What a shame.
Can you please offer corrections?
I really appreciate you saying something but how would you refer to the other items. I have very little experience with items pre-1900 and most of the information I gathered was from researching online. I believe I mentioned my lack of knowledge in this area in the beginning (if it wasn’t edited out). It appears you have experience so please share. Thx.
I am Elizabeth Swann, the character in Pirates of the Caribbean, when she is forced to wear a corset and as her potential husband is talking she faints and falls into the sea because it has cut her diaphragm off of oxygen! Lovely for ladies who trained into them but I just soon have no figure at all!
Well put! I completely agree.
