I was a dota and lol player, I tried HoN once or twice, just not my cup of tea, but I was genuinely happy for the game for having dedicated players. And I was hoping for it to create some rivalry for the other big names (lol and dota). But then I had to quit pc gaming, still playing some on mobile but it just doesn't feel the same. Now knowing hon closed, I feel a little sad that I didn't really give the game a chance while I still could. But it is what it is, I guess.
Played LoL a lot with my friends from 2011-2015, but also quit PC gaming forever, but now I've been more than happy that I can play a superior version of my favorite game in mobile! League of Legends: Wild Rift. It's everything I wish LoL PC was. Been playing it since day 1. I now only play mobile games, like 5 games 😊
I'm so stoked that you included Puppet Master for the first heroes to review. I main that guy in my HoN days. Still sad to hear that the game is ending but it gave me lot of fun memories. You should do Zephyr and Fayde next. Also the voice packs. They were pretty cool #RainbowWarrior! :)
HoN to this day still has the best hero concept and design of any moba I miss it so bad, the int heroes alone were in a world of their own Martyr, Gravekeeper, Prophet, Riftwalker.
You forgot to say the hell flowers unique ability compared to his dota 2 counter part. I'm not talking about the fire path that the target leaves while he is silenced. I'm talking about perplexed. Perplexed is basically mute in dota 2 which means it disables the enemies items so it's a good counter for carries that have bkb. So when you sneak up to them, they won't be able to bkb. But the trade off is that hell flower doesn't pop at the end like malev does. (Not sure about the last part since I haven't played the game in ages). Maybe you can talk about the unique items of HON as well. They are pretty amazing. Like the agi battery(forgot the name), it basically give you a buff of increased movement speed if activated with great stats, cheap build up and wraith band as one of it's requirements. It's a strong in early to mid game and let's you out pace ganking heroes.
Still playing the game, but its tear jerking to see a recap of HoN. And im learning so much of their lore, didn't even know Myrmidon used to be a legion. Deadwood was the first hero i used, i was just so amazed by his appearance and concept. Next would be Gauntlet, for the same reason as Deadwood. It'd be awesome to see these two covered.
I'm not quite sure who in Dota the Madman you can compare with, on paper he's a perfect laner with a kit to go in and out, you're also correct that he has good mobility but in actual gameplay he's very fragile to lane, he's easily hurt and doesn't really do much but go invisible and poke you with it. He's amazing late game once he gets the BKB tho, kinda like a troll warlord
Amazing video! You could also cover some of the great unique heroes such as parasite, Gunblade, Deadwood, Zephyr, and my personal favorite: Empath - What a support!!! And what a fun combo it was with Sand Wraith! I really hope she gets added in Dota as it will create a whole new gameplay :)
Thank you for making this video Dennis. Hon players are devastated that it is closing :( It did not last til the end but made so many memories to us players.
Also I thought the hon servers where in the communities hands rather then the company anymore considering they hosted a community tournament about a year ago
they claimed to have partnered with icefrog, but they lied. when Riot and Blizzard sueing cases were rising at valves hero and art concepts HoN was trashed out of the scene. i loved the game but hated the developers actions, they were so unprofessional
Fun fact: that mad archaeologist mentioned in electrician's story foreshadowed and ended up becoming Dr. Repulsor, who is also bombardier's brother. Now the choice of goblin for electrician's model doesn't seem so random.
HoN was not the most polished moba but some of the characters were absolute gems. The designs were unique, flavorful and most of all: fun. That's what I remember the most about this game. It was just so much fun. Flux, Master of Arms, Gauntlet, Shadowblade, Berserker (you're next!), Nomad, Gemini, Oogie, Empath, Artesia, Parasite, Midas, Solstice, Amun-Ra, Salforis and Maliken deserve to be in dota (imo, and I don't know a lot of the newer ones). They all have something to offer. Thanks for that walk on memory lane, I hope you'll do more of them. This game needs to be remembered.
If valve buys the rights for the HoN heroes, I would happily welcome Deadwood/Dampeer/Prisoner 945/Fayde/Zephyr/Puppet Master/Berzerker/Nomad/Emerald Warden/Amun Ra/Lord Salforis/Midas in Dota 2 anytime. The rest of the heroes are welcome too but, i have no idea what the fk heroes after Riptide do since thats when i stopped playing.
Myrmidone looks the most interesting to me. Even when sharing a design with Slardar it seems like a kit that can excell as both core and support. But the best hero in the video is definitely Dennis with his excellent puns!
HoN also allows DPS mages/magic types due to 1 item. They also had the sange, yasha and Kaya before Dota 2 added it. Honestly they have a lot of great hero designs that I would to see on Dota 2.
16:38 That's his voice line when he succesfull kill "taunt" hero before that when he use "taunt" on enemy hero he'll say "Myrmidon uses taunt on enemy".
At first, I thought Puppet Master not giving direct control of an enemy hero as too "safe" of a version of the concept. But now that I see what all his skills in tandem do together, I want this guy ported to Dota 2 immediately. The only thing I would really change is Whiplash, replacing it with some attack modifier that debuffs an attacked enemy instead, and said debuff is activated whenever the target is attacked, making it doubly useful with Voodoo Puppet and the enemy forced to attack it.
Would be good to have a part 2 and 3. Maybe a series which features the original HoN heroes and how would they fare in DOTA 2 and some insights on that hero.
i dont know about Hero kits, but some of those items... well, League would benefit from stuff like the much more offensive boots, Nome's Wisdom, Null Stone or (something a few players been asking for a while now), something like Staff Of The Master/Aghanim's Scepter
Im actually suprised LoL doesnt have its own version of Aghs. Its just a conceptually fun item, paticularly since both Dota and Hon mostly moved away from just making them stat upgrades.
league has had a null stone equivalent for basically all of its life in banshee's veil, and had the nome's wisdom effect for quite a while on catalyst of the aeons and the items it built into with the added bonus of generating mana from damage taken. even with catalyst gone after the major item rework last season, the nome's effect can still be found on the current iteration of seraph's embrace as far as the staff and scepter go, i think i recall a rioter outright saying long ago that it was one of the aspects of dota they were heavily against including. it was something along the lines of how that sort of thing can become a balance nightmare, as the effect can easily end up being basically irrelevant for the amount of gold put into it, or basically essential for the character - at which point, you're basically locking them out of a core part of their kit until they give up a large chunk of gold and an item slot. plus there was the factor that at the time, a lot of upgrades were really just bonuses to damage or cooldown, so the ability power and cdr stats were effectively designed to be a replacement for the concept anyway that said, you could probably consider earlier versions of viktor's hex core to be league's exploration of the concept, anyway. he used to start with a item that basically just gave him some extra base stats and couldn't be removed, but could be upgraded to improve those stats and add an extra effect to one of his abilities. the first version had a different upgraded hex core for each basic ability that had their individual stat lines, while a later rework changed it to a linear upgrade tree where each upgrade gave him more ability power and mana plus a special "evolution" point that could be used to upgrade any ability, with the maxed out hex core resulting in all of his abilities being upgraded. nowadays the whole item aspect has been removed, with the evolution points instead being earned by farming and getting kills which really fits league's whole approach to the concept more, really. the whole evolution point system originated with another champion, kha'zix, who got 'em simply by ranking up his ultimate. similar mechanics have popped up from time to time. some like rengar's bonetooth necklace ( which, at one point in time, was in fact another champion-specific item, but you had to buy it and could sell it later ... both for a small amount of gold ) have been streamlined to stuff like a simple damage boost from killing unique enemies, but the earliest version stacked on kills and lost stacks on deaths, and certain stack thresholds granted bonuses to his abilities. others like kai'sa are still part of the game today, where each of her basic abilities get upgraded after she reaches certain stat thresholds and this even forms the basis for her alternative builds so, yeah. in a sense, all three of these things are things league already has, though it takes a _very_ different philosophical approach to what's perhaps the most iconic one
I love that HoN changes the name of the skill affected by staff of master, I will really miss this game, a lot of genius heroes, zephyr, bombardier, gravekeeper, balphagore, oogie, I can go all day. Really wish dota 2 acquire some of them
silhouette was one of the more creative hero in HoN , yes it kinda has a ult that similar to old morphling but the way she could interact with trees is fun to play with
I think these are just the HoN classical heroes... many HoN's most unique heroes come later in development. Nitro - the first moba hero who cannot auto-attack, instead relying on skillshot, also can ground herself like siege tank in Starcraft. Oogie - Tanky inteligence fighter, his kit basically convert damage to mana, and when he spends mana, mana spent convert to health. Solstice - She changes playstyle depending on day/night, in day time shes a tank and deal small dot in massive AOE, with stun and aoe cleave, at night she becomes stealthy assasin with vision counter. Parallax - AOE magic damage carry, his kit allow him to stack large amount of inteligence from the enemy, and deal dot damage based on the mana difference between him and the target Draconis (before rework) - a dragon that can launch himself onto a turret and attack with 3000 range, although low damage the fireballs deal dot, basically prevent the enemy from sieging. Other mentions, Kane, Artisha, deadwood, circe, dark lady, shadowsword, artillery, zephr, moria, skrap, scouts
I really like Deadwood (especially his ult) until my friend said,"bruh it just worse version of Beastmaster Ult." But still the impact is the most satisfying. Better than Pyromancer Blazing strike
Loved this game during my college years. Had so many alt accounts just cause of how tedious the game got in higher brackets, and I wanted to make one-trick accounts (had an account that only played Berzerker at 1750, Midas at 1670, etc.). Played steady in the 1700-1800 range with the occasional drops to 1600s. Stopped playing though when they changed the rank system to be medal-based, and because of how few other players there are in the NA servers. My pride and joy is still my 85% win rate Moraxus mid. It was a fun counter against all the smurf MK spammers in the NA server like 5 years ago.
Really wish we get Puppetmaster to Dota soon. Besides, we havent gotten a new carry hero in a while. Also, you shouldve discussed Prohpet and Shadowblade as well! They were pretty cool concepts for heroes as well
Please do one on the supports. Hon had great support heroes and supports needs more love in dota I feel. Had way more fun supporting with rhapsody/pearl/empath than with the dota supports.
Ahh HoN, good ol times. It was a refreshing game after transitioning from dota1. My favorite hero is nomad and fayde .. i love how nomad playstyle are ❤
Puppet Master is such a brilliant hero that I would love to see in Dota. Another nice thing with his ult is that if you're ganking someone/the enemy is close your Whiplash can hit both the pupped and the target you're killing, so you get the 2.25x crit damage on the puppet, and it splashes to the puppet's target meaning you just crit someone for 4.5x damage, 50% magic, 50% physical.
The slardar clone looks a bit like the unused concept art for Arc Warden, and his spells seem cool (especially the conditional slow/stun spell). That aside, cover the one true Warden next! Despite being a 'new' DotA1 hero, he should have some good history.
I remember the one-shot trick on Puppet master. Set up crowd control and move into melee range. Ulti and then splash damage hits both target and the doll. Assassins shroud for even bigger crit. Bring back HoN!
I remember when there was not enough beta keys available to play DOTA 2, we really enjoyed playing HON and honestly there were some aspects of it that are better than DOTA 2.
I always liked when electrician stunned you for really long tkme and was dragging him self on ya :D By the time u finished the animation u get it again :D
I really regret not giving the time to learn this game. I remember enjoying the game back when I was 7, but playing on an internet cafe with lots of people backseating you on how to play discouraged, not to mention that everyone in the game expects you to be already good.
its much more funnier playing as puppet master when you solo gank an enemy casting voodoo puppet and following puppet show, this will make the enemy attacks the puppet like he is killing his own self lmao.
I wish i could learn this but it takes time to learn these kinds of games and you just have so much to learn i hold myself back. Coz the amount of time required would be really long. It maybe worth it but starting stage where you have no idea what's going on i don't like that stage. And you have to study every hero in order to play against them.
I tried Hon about a year ago and I kind of hated it that camera is a bugger and builds are hard to learn for a new game and pickings also the problem I think if I'd given it more time I would've enjoyed it more.
I always loved the concept of puppet master and sad to see the servers shut down but hopefully ice frog picks up hero’s like puppet master and add them to the roster of Dota 2 as a homage

There are some unused hero responses referencing puppeteer, so who knows 🤔🤔🤔
Man, i love HoN. So many unique heroes like Nomad, Riftwalker, Parasite and etc
.
Dampeer and solstice are one of my favorites as well
Zephyr was a really underrated design too. One of my favorites.
Oh and empath was dope too
Empath is my fave support hero. Really works well with predator.
i think fayde just way too similar too nyx
HoN to this day still has the best hero concept and design of any moba I miss it so bad, the int heroes alone were in a world of their own Martyr, Gravekeeper, Prophet, Riftwalker.
You had me dyin' at the Weed Field. Man, this evokes so much nostalgia.
While I only played DotA 2 and LOL it’s good to know this game has kept a following till the end. Thanks for uploading.
Wouldnt mind seeing more of this.
I never played HoN, but its interesting to see hero concepts that could work in Dota aswell
Thank you for making these. Picked up dota recently, never had the chance to play this game. Great concepts for sure.
Thank you so much for featuring HoN.
His E and R looks like Ursa
Amazing video! You could also cover some of the great unique heroes such as parasite, Gunblade, Deadwood, Zephyr, and my personal favorite: Empath - What a support!!! And what a fun combo it was with Sand Wraith! I really hope she gets added in Dota as it will create a whole new gameplay :)
Gunblade is cool
Thank you for making this video Dennis. Hon players are devastated that it is closing :( It did not last til the end but made so many memories to us players.
Could you make a video covering all HON related stuff like new heroes and items in dedication to the server shutting down?
Also I thought the hon servers where in the communities hands rather then the company anymore considering they hosted a community tournament about a year ago
Well the company still has the servers and they are the ones shutting down
Will it still be possible to play the game in custom lobbies somehow? Maybe if you could have community run servers, the game would stay alive...
they claimed to have partnered with icefrog, but they lied. when Riot and Blizzard sueing cases were rising at valves hero and art concepts HoN was trashed out of the scene.
i loved the game but hated the developers actions, they were so unprofessional
where can i read info about these case ?
"Be mad, not sad" - Dennis, probably
when i played electrician in 2010 he did not move around when he cast static grip. This must be a late change to him.
Great selection but I'd also include pandamonium, engineer and bombadier
Valve should bought HOn for hero porting and copy rights. Salute to developers who invested thier passion debugging the game.
I still remember the horror of deadwood and nomad in HoN
I wish they will make HoN 2... perhaps some day (I know am very high on copium, but a man can dream)
Amun-ra spamming Q cancel be "Raa!,Raa!,Raa!"
...and yeah he's fun to trolling your opponents
Myrmidone looks the most interesting to me. Even when sharing a design with Slardar it seems like a kit that can excell as both core and support.
But the best hero in the video is definitely Dennis with his excellent puns!
HoN also allows DPS mages/magic types due to 1 item. They also had the sange, yasha and Kaya before Dota 2 added it.
Honestly they have a lot of great hero designs that I would to see on Dota 2.
@@forte609 you mean the harkon's blade? That was an awesome item that would really be great if it is in dota.
Midas from HON was one of the most unique and fun heroes. Flux and kinesis were also some of my absolute faves.
indeed, midas is so agressive and different strg hero
16:38 That's his voice line when he succesfull kill "taunt" hero before that when he use "taunt" on enemy hero he'll say "Myrmidon uses taunt on enemy".
I hope Valve gives a tribute to HoN by porting heroes like Myrmidon to Dota.
Cant wait for a segment on Moraxus.
Boy how i wish this took off instead of LoL. Had to switch but I always way preferred HoN.
Its just a conceptually fun item, paticularly since both Dota and Hon mostly moved away from just making them stat upgrades.
league has had a null stone equivalent for basically all of its life in banshee's veil, and had the nome's wisdom effect for quite a while on catalyst of the aeons and the items it built into with the added bonus of generating mana from damage taken. even with catalyst gone after the major item rework last season, the nome's effect can still be found on the current iteration of seraph's embrace
as far as the staff and scepter go, i think i recall a rioter outright saying long ago that it was one of the aspects of dota they were heavily against including. it was something along the lines of how that sort of thing can become a balance nightmare, as the effect can easily end up being basically irrelevant for the amount of gold put into it, or basically essential for the character - at which point, you're basically locking them out of a core part of their kit until they give up a large chunk of gold and an item slot. plus there was the factor that at the time, a lot of upgrades were really just bonuses to damage or cooldown, so the ability power and cdr stats were effectively designed to be a replacement for the concept anyway
that said, you could probably consider earlier versions of viktor's hex core to be league's exploration of the concept, anyway. he used to start with a item that basically just gave him some extra base stats and couldn't be removed, but could be upgraded to improve those stats and add an extra effect to one of his abilities. the first version had a different upgraded hex core for each basic ability that had their individual stat lines, while a later rework changed it to a linear upgrade tree where each upgrade gave him more ability power and mana plus a special "evolution" point that could be used to upgrade any ability, with the maxed out hex core resulting in all of his abilities being upgraded. nowadays the whole item aspect has been removed, with the evolution points instead being earned by farming and getting kills
which really fits league's whole approach to the concept more, really. the whole evolution point system originated with another champion, kha'zix, who got 'em simply by ranking up his ultimate. similar mechanics have popped up from time to time. some like rengar's bonetooth necklace ( which, at one point in time, was in fact another champion-specific item, but you had to buy it and could sell it later ... both for a small amount of gold ) have been streamlined to stuff like a simple damage boost from killing unique enemies, but the earliest version stacked on kills and lost stacks on deaths, and certain stack thresholds granted bonuses to his abilities. others like kai'sa are still part of the game today, where each of her basic abilities get upgraded after she reaches certain stat thresholds and this even forms the basis for her alternative builds
so, yeah. in a sense, all three of these things are things league already has, though it takes a _very_ different philosophical approach to what's perhaps the most iconic one
Gonna miss my Fayde.... I love to rush codex as soon as i hitlv6😂
I love that HoN changes the name of the skill affected by staff of master, I will really miss this game, a lot of genius heroes, zephyr, bombardier, gravekeeper, balphagore, oogie, I can go all day.
Really wish dota 2 acquire some of them
That weed field with snoop cracked me up 😂
If puppet master is used by a very technical player, he can assassin shroud attack and voodoo puppet in an instant resulting in one hit kills
Idk why i enjoy your videos so much
silhouette was one of the more creative hero in HoN , yes it kinda has a ult that similar to old morphling but the way she could interact with trees is fun to play with
I think these are just the HoN classical heroes... many HoN's most unique heroes come later in development.
Parallax - AOE magic damage carry, his kit allow him to stack large amount of inteligence from the enemy, and deal dot damage based on the mana difference between him and the target
Draconis (before rework) - a dragon that can launch himself onto a turret and attack with 3000 range, although low damage the fireballs deal dot, basically prevent the enemy from sieging.
Other mentions, Kane, Artisha, deadwood, circe, dark lady, shadowsword, artillery, zephr, moria, skrap, scouts
I really like Deadwood (especially his ult) until my friend said,"bruh it just worse version of Beastmaster Ult."
But still the impact is the most satisfying. Better than Pyromancer Blazing strike
It was basically a joke to say "im a deadwood main", but i loved playing that dude
Awesome history video as always. Can't wait for the next one, no matter who will be in it
Loved this game during my college years.
Pandamonium was absolutely ridiculous and i fucking love it. Personally my most fav hero design from HoN
Damn, these were fun! Hope they make the jump!
Man hearing witch slayers silver bullet is really a chefs kiss. Haha
HoN don't leave us
You missed the most important combo from PM. You trap your foe and force him to hit the puppet, so your enemy kills himself
I was wondering about that as he explained the skills. Never played HoN, but that seemed like the logical intended use of PM's kit
Thank you H.O.N for being there where was no dota2 and R.I.P you have done good for future of player
My favorite hero is nomad and fayde .. i love how nomad playstyle are ❤
Pearl. Rhapsody. The Dark Lady. Chthuluphant. Midas. Ravenor. Balphagore. Goldeveil. Empath.
So many heroes that I will miss playing.
I remember playing it on GGclient, good old days
The slardar clone looks a bit like the unused concept art for Arc Warden, and his spells seem cool (especially the conditional slow/stun spell).
That aside, cover the one true Warden next! Despite being a 'new' DotA1 hero, he should have some good history.
I miss playing HON tbh. I dont have a desktop but i hope i can play it after i buy a desktop.
Oh. It will shut down :(
I remember the one-shot trick on Puppet master. Set up crowd control and move into melee range. Ulti and then splash damage hits both target and the doll. Assassins shroud for even bigger crit. Bring back HoN!
project kongor
I remember when there was not enough beta keys available to play DOTA 2, we really enjoyed playing HON and honestly there were some aspects of it that are better than DOTA 2.
It's faster than Dota 2 due to quicker turn rates
The history of hon in 1 comment.
It was a holding place for dota 1 players
@@forte609 yeah that turn rate feel so good
I always liked when electrician stunned you for really long tkme and was dragging him self on ya :D By the time u finished the animation u get it again :D
I really regret not giving the time to learn this game. I remember enjoying the game back when I was 7, but playing on an internet cafe with lots of people backseating you on how to play discouraged, not to mention that everyone in the game expects you to be already good.
It's such a shame to see one of the old Mobas reach its end. This is nice tribute.
What if some company resurrects HoN and give it a fresher take and not just DotA 1.5?
Maliken, Engineer, and Dark Lady. All 3 have interesting game mechanics.
Seeing gnome's wisdom again after many years makes me remember Oogie. I love to pubstomp using that hero.
Ah. The good old days of safe lane Swiftblade/Elec. Nasty combo.
its much more funnier playing as puppet master when you solo gank an enemy casting voodoo puppet and following puppet show, this will make the enemy attacks the puppet like he is killing his own self lmao.
I wish i could learn this but it takes time to learn these kinds of games and you just have so much to learn i hold myself back. Coz the amount of time required would be really long. It maybe worth it but starting stage where you have no idea what's going on i don't like that stage. And you have to study every hero in order to play against them.
If dota can also add witch slayer as lion skin, omg, that would be sick. voice line, skill animation, perfect
It's so wonderful video, very satisfying explanation, HON is best memorable game until we heard about the end of this game, keep it up 🤩
man sucks that some mobas die so fast
electrican+swiftblade was absolute win combo
Great video, was hoping Gauntlet and Engineer would be in the video too
I tried Hon about a year ago and I kind of hated it that camera is a bugger and builds are hard to learn for a new game and pickings also the problem I think if I'd given it more time I would've enjoyed it more.
I always loved the concept of puppet master and sad to see the servers shut down but hopefully ice frog picks up hero’s like puppet master and add them to the roster of Dota 2 as a homage
Voodoo Doll seems like such a cool ability
