I live in Wilkes county, North Carolina (USA) where moonshining was (is) part of the heritage. The product is called, Mountain Dew, not be confused with the soda. It is where NASCAR started as a way of avoiding the authorities. The folks around here have an outlaw bent and actually escaped from the Confederates in the Civil War because they didn't want to fight for the rich planters and slave owners. Oddly enough, it was "dry" for a long time and it is in the Bible Belt where alcohol consumption is frowned upon. Back in the 70s, when it was "dry," they used to sell beer in soda vending machines, LOL. The natives here are Scotch-Irish Protestants and are called "Hillbillies" which is derived from the followers of King William III of Orange, the Protestant King of Ireland. I was born Irish Catholic from the Philadelphia area, so I'm in enemy territory here, LOL. Great vid and song! I was referred here from your post in the Rocky Road to Dublin vid, the best rendition of this song since the Clancy Brothers.

Thanks for viewing! This song is traditional. It has been recorded by many bands over the years including The Dubliners and The Pogues.
Where my ancestors got “moonshine” aka “Mountain Dew” from …

This song sounds similar to “The Girl I Left Behind Me”
