Interesting Epilogue: According to several sources, LAPD eventually returned all the weapons to the gun store that were borrowed during the shootout. The weapons were obviously used and dirty. The store owner allegedly asked the LAPD to pay for the weapons, as they could no longer be sold as new. LAPD allegedly refused to buy them. Rather than pursuing legal action for compensation, the store owner advertised the weapons for sale as “actual North Hollywood shoot out” relics, quickly selling all of them for much more than their actual retail value.
I never get tired of reading or hearing about this. It’s just amazing to me how two guys were able to survive a 44 minute shootout with ANYBODY, but especially police. I know the police weren’t prepared for something like this to ever happen, but it’s still amazing that it took 44 minutes. It’s also AMAZING how nobody except for the bank robbers were killed.
It is one of those stories in history that is so amazing and miraculous that no lame brain Hollyweird movie could ever do it justice. Truth is stranger than fiction.
I know this will sound stupid but i m proud of Emil Matasareanu as a fellow Romanian myself, this is what our country is forcing us to do. I work my ass of for 400 a mounth, sometimes i wanna rob a bank aswell but i don t want to kill nobody. I know it s patetic and sounds silly but this is the truth, my truth.
@@thejay8963 To be honest I'd rather see a movie about the two bank robbers themselves, then end the movie with the 44 min shootout. The actual North Hollywood shootout in 1997 is the least interesting aspect of the two bank robbers. I find their backstory and how Larry and Emil meet each other and became partners in crime is much more interesting than the shootout itself.
I was in the Sheriffs Academy the day this happened. All of the recruits were called in from PT to watch and listen to this incident progress. It was eye opening when we all thought, "This could be us in 6 months."
True story… The female LAPD dispatcher that worked the shootout that day was as professional and calm as could be, it was also her first day on the job as a dispatcher.
I remember watching this entire shootout play out on tv with my dad. Both of us sitting in shock. My father did 40+ years in law enforcement and I still remember the look of horror on his face as those brave officers of lapd took this situation on highly HIGHLY outgunned. Still gives me chills
2 man against tons of man with pistols, I dont like the authority, I wont rob a bank to fight it, but tbh, police is nothing than a company that is paid to do a job,its a job you do it or not nothing heroic of it, its for the money, you get into a job that defend a this type of economic system that will create a enviroment that people want it see down soo badly, you wont expect to think everything will go smoothly.

There were oders over the radio to just let them leave and not shoot if they tried to leave the scene.. Cops knew they were beaten in the first 25 mins and they were trying to avoid going toe to toe which is how close they would have needed to to make shotguns .9mm and .38 spl Those 2 acted like they had no sense after they both got wounded
That wasn't the problem today's after I went to an apartment building across the street and there were half dollar sized bullet holes in its Amazing no one else was killed
"Decided to prone out, and find the exposed feet" There are so many instances where this tactic should be used, and it somehow never enters people's minds.
Adrenaline gives you extreme tunnel vision in combat. Alot of people have not had shots fired back at them and it's all disjointed and screaming. Also most of the time you don't have a full squad of dudes to cover you so if you lay down and the suspect walks around the car on you the it's all over.
its hard in the heat of the moment. Generally you are taught to shoot center of mass because it's the easiest spot to hit that will take a threat down. In the recent buffalo shootings the security guard could have shot out the guys legs but hindsight is 20/20
Congrats on 300k PopoMedic! Super glad to see your transition into these mini-docs and happy to see your channel start to pop! Been watching since 10k!
I remember this well. This incident was a catalyst that changed the face of law enforcement across the country. Oh yeah, one more thing: I am glad both those losers were sent to he**. Burn baby, burn.
My dad was an officer in this shootout. I watched it live on TV fully knowing I might witness my dad get gunned down. He’s now retired after 38 years of serving LAPD
I was a cop for 32 years. Thankfully never was involved in anything like that, but I have colleagues shot at by jewelry store robbers standing through the sunroof of a Mercedes. They bought it too. Thanks to your Dad!
Between this one, and the tank chase, both changed law enforcement forever. The way you told this story and the feel of the video stands my hair on edge.
And the Miami Dade shootout in 1986 too, the FBI were badly outgunned when chasing vicious well trained armed gunmen that were robbing a lot of banks throughout that year. They tried to arrest them in their car and they all were only armed with pistols and magnums, while these two guys had assault rifles and a shotgun. They ended up killing a few FBI agents and injuring a majority of the others.
I was working as security at a mental health facility in Van Nuys when this happened. A lot of these officers had serious ptsd and became patients there from this single event. Literal warzone, constantly being suppressed with full auto machine gun fire while they had just 9mm pistols. I think a handful of them quit after this or were on considerable amounts of leave. One of them simply told us "The bullets just never stopped. Turned our cars into swiss cheese, went right through them." The shooters liked the movie 'heat'......a lot.

No, not really.
This is mediocre at best, this asshat never even brought up the fact the police had to effectively raid a privately owned gun store just to keep from being fish in a barrel.

My uncle owned the key shop across the street from there. On the Hughes parking lot. I lived on the 6500 block of Agnes. There was a store there called b&b guns that provided some of the firearms used by police officers during that shootout. Ironically, they were shut down thanks to California gun laws.
I think the police are pretty well equipped nowadays and it’d be more ironic if the bank had been robbed the day the gun shop closed because of the California gun laws. I haven’t got a problem either way but he did mention in the video the police got a shit load of M16’s after this incident
@@ChickenEyebrowPS3 Police across the country bought ARs after this incident. I lived in Florida and they all had ARs in their squad car trunks after this shoot out.
B&B Guns was several blocks away on Oxnard St. and yes, the cops raided that store to get better equipment. The gun store was shut down because of Los Angeles gun ordinances not California gun laws. There are still gun stores in Burbank, down the street.

This bank robbery is legendary. I worked right in front of the Bank of America across the street. And every time I pass by it I just imagine cops, swat and helicopters around the bank.
I remember seeing this unfold live on the news the day it happened and just sitting there being so surprised and dumbfounded at how the police were so helpless against these 2 men. This is the incident that changed law enforcement forever before this only swat teams were issued assault rifles and even some swat teams at that time didn't carry heavy caliber rifles
Bro I remember watching the shootout when Larry Eugene Phillips Jr came out guns blazing, I thought it was a movie, but I was wrong. Bro I even remember watching on the news segment when they showed the bank screenshots of Larry and Emil on the first bank hit. I always wondered who were the faces behind the ski mask and glasses. Now I know who they are after all these years lol. This case became my drive to be a future C.h.p. trooper and then a LASD Sheriff K9 Deputy.

This is the greatest narration of a video EVER.. ive heard and seen this story MANY times, yet this vid had my adrenaline pumping from start to finish Well done!
Yes. It is refreshing to hear the narrator be so comical and real with so many personal assertions like 1:13 " uh...whatever else the fuck gym rats talk about..." & 14:09 "...after realizing their 9mm's fuckin' suck". But the guy goofed at 10:29 when he said "both men could hear sirens of the 'Calvary' of the LAPD responding"... I'm sure he knows the difference between cavalry & Calvary otherwise, perfectly exciting narration.
There's another documentary out there that has all the live video in real time as it happend.Because there was news crews all around the scene and in the air.I mean the one guy was trying to shoot down a news helicopter! Lol So try to find that Doc if u wana be impressed. Its waaay different when u can hear the over 2000 rounds shot off lol
Ive seen this story a few times before and its a great story to listen too. If I'm not mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong, some things that are missing from the story are: They purchased Russian made armor piercing online and used it for their main rifle ammo during the the heist. The part about him not knowing how to clear his rifle is slightly wrong. A common problem with the rifle was it would stovepipe (casing gets stuck while ejecting). The reason he couldn't fix it was because he was actually shot in the right thumb. Instead of using a different finger to clear the casing he dropped it and than switched to the Beretta. Swat borrowed an armored money transport truck to rescue some of the downed officers. Mătăsăreanu's family tried suing the LAPD because they didn't allow the paramedics on scene until after he died, claimed they let him die on purpose. If any of that is wrong lmk, I've just heard it from different documentaries.
I actually lived 2 miles away from this incident at the time it happened. I would sit at home with my police scanner on everyday and I remember hearing the shots being fired from my house and then remember hearing all the chatter on the TAC frequencies. I'll never forget this day. This was literally like a scene from a movie. They even showed on the news the at the time it was going down and the news footage showed that the cops just let him die. It reminds me of that crazy sh00tout in the movie HEAT in downtown Los Angeles. That was one of the best sh00tout scenes in ANY movie even to this day!!
I remember this... I lived a couple blocks away and this was my bank. The cops looted the gun store to get heavier fire power. I'll never forget this day.
This occurred just a few years after the infamous Miami Shootout in 1986. It just goes to show how much law enforcement learned in those few short years. Despite how well prepared these criminals were, law enforcement responded well and took them down. Kudos to the LA PD for this. Very impressive.

Yeah, Phenobarbital makes you drunk. I don't see how it would have improved their chances or performance? It's used for seizures: mostly on k-9's. Tranquilisers or narcotics in limited doses might have been more effective? AR's would definitely have been a better choice of weaponry even then.
My daughter lived a few blocks from the bank where it all started. She could here all the shooting from her house.2 years before the shootout, I met Erik Estrada actor from the movie series "Chips" at a store across the bank where the shooting would take place. He was shopping with his wife.
I am having trouble with myself believing that this happened 25 years ago. It's still pretty fresh in my memory. I had bought a few firearms at B&B Gun Sales nearby on Oxnard St. a few years earlier. I can only imagine what it must've been like for the staff when a bunch of LAPD cops came running in there to acquire more firepower in addition to their Berettas and 12-gauge pumps. Now almost all patrollers on this force have either ARs or M4's as a standard carry -- even the motor squad has them mounted on their bikes.

Not saying it’s not true since they had split up after they almost got busted in a real estate scam and were apart for about a year after… LPJ got busted and DF got away. When DF knew things were bad was when LPJ used a fake cali ID with DFs name on it and gave that to the cops when he got brought in- almost got him busted when he came to bail him out. For the record, he didn't ditch the AK because he didn't know how to clear the jam, he had been shot in the left hand (thumb if I remember correctly) and was unable to clear the jam with one functioning hand. Later on through the month, police show up at his doorstep with questions, not only questions but showed him his check and asked “Is this you’re check” he replied “yes” with some proof of identification he got the check back and police left with questions answered. The "militarization" still would have happened due to other incidents but the body armor, uniforms and tactics help the police do there job but probably the most important benefit for them, to keep them alive another day to answer another call from dispatch from someone calling for help on one of the worst days of there life.

They ended up killing a few FBI agents and injuring a majority of the others.

They purchased Russian made armor piercing online and used it for their main rifle ammo during the the heist.

I was in 3rd grade, Living In Montebello. I remember my pops working in that area and watching the news at home. Once I got home later that day
The Cyberpunk music got me so zoned in to this story. 😎 Popo thank you so much for your incredible story telling & video editing. Subscribed and Bell Notifications on all. 👍
Thank you!!
I was in high school when this happened. Those cops are heroes! Such a shockingly different police response to heavily armed criminals compared to what we saw in the Uvalde school shooting just weeks ago.
Those cops got fucked up.
rip larry and emil
Compare to today cops back then is more fit then today fat body
Says a lot, something ain’t right.
Well, there was money involved in this case...
damn... imagine if these guys had received any kind of tactical training, how much more damage they could have done
They were training, but in the field!
It really is a shame they weren't able to kill a bunch of piggies.
@@silvereagle1960 Bench pressing doesn't count unless you are Hollywood hulk Hogan

I lived in North Hollywood in my early teen years. I was blessed to move somewhere much nicer right before all the craziness LA saw (earthquake, LA riots, North Hollywood shootout, etc.) in the early/mid 90s.
Sick beats, bro. It feels like I am playing an epic video game from 1990
I felt the same!
There is a movie based on this incident, it's called "44 minutes". One of the best movies I've watched so far.
Megadeth has a song 44 Minutes
That movie was really well done.
One of the best break downs of this story I have ever heard. One small detail you left out is that their ammunition was armor piercing but either way great video.
Goddamn these guys we're really not playing around, as dangerous as they we're I'm impressed by their level of skill and willingness to work with one another in all honesty
I'd like to add, the ammo used had soft steel cores, not hardened. From what I gathered, the ammo was chinese made and soft steel was seen as cheaper to be used in FMJ's rather than lead., making the ammo not AP.
Then again, this is what I've heard.
@@ranger-rj2ym The Norinco’s they had are a Chinese AK-47 variant so it’s possible they had Chinese ammo too. I have seen a number of other reports saying they had ap rounds tho but who knows for sure.
@@michaelprez3811 That’s for sure! One of the officers said that if they were using semi auto with a decent site that they might’ve killed all the cops that first got there. It was the full auto fire that made the guns way to hard to control and therefore a lot less effective. Thank god for that
@@mikeamir9979 Yeah, from what I understand, that was in the age where you could buy a crap ton of surplus for cheap on the dime unlike today. (*Example being a mosin back then could go maybe a 100 dollars now costs way more.. Darn those wehra and comiboos along with inflation*)
I feel like im playing doom with the music choice haha
Does anyone realize how insane it is that these guys never actually killed anyone during any of these heists? Obviously these were real bad guys but that also shows a very high level of professionalism and restraint.
They did kill an armored car driver.

Idk how you got in my algorithm but this video is so fucking amazing
Not sure if you will read this. But I have some constructive feedback for you.
Loved the pace and information in the doco. The build up before the heist to all the previous robberies were brilliant, a lot of things that others don’t touch on, but the actual heist deserved 10+ mins alone. I felt you were a bit quick on it, as I’ve watched other docos on this topic, there is a lot more you could have added I felt. Mainly from the time they leave the bank door to their final destination of death.
I hope you take this as feedback and not criticism. I do like your stuff, cheers mate.
I absolutely love how you narrated this clip with sarcasm, humor, and excitement! Good on you mate!
For the record, he didn't ditch the AK because he didn't know how to clear the jam, he had been shot in the left hand (thumb if I remember correctly) and was unable to clear the jam with one functioning hand. There is a fair amount of information that is missing from this video (I assume for time) and some of the events are out of order, which gives off the impression of a different story than what actually happened. I didn't spot anything else that was just blatantly wrong though so it's better than most shorter videos on the subject.
Yeah...the idiot looked down the barrel and it went off lol...."oops" 🤯
this guy is just a biased white knight for the holier than thou military and law enforcement.
So let me get this straight, their first bust in Glendale in October '93 with all of those armaments and the specific charge; also it was two of them; didn't come back to them before or after they had done other robberies and this one?
Facts
1:23 it shows a pile of rifle rounds. Somehow, all the primers have firing pin strikes, but the bullet is still seated in the case.
My father grew up in North Hollywood around the time, he told me he remembers this like yesterday, he just received his paycheck for that week and went to deposit, he walks up to the doors opens it and sees the gun men doing their thing and he just ran off and dropped his check cause of how frightened he was. Later on through the month, police show up at his doorstep with questions, not only questions but showed him his check and asked “Is this you’re check” he replied “yes” with some proof of identification he got the check back and police left with questions answered.
Happy Ending for Him but
Not so happy for the City of North Hollywood...
Oh my gosh I WAS THERE! I saw a guy open the door, look in and turn around and I thought Oh my God. That must be their getaway driver checking on them. Later during the investigation I told the police I saw the getaway driver drop a piece of paper. I thought maybe it was a clue. Directions to the hide out or something. I saw one of the officers pick it up look at it and put it in a bag. But they didn't tell me anything about it. Wow. This is CRAZY!

I've seen far to many videos and adaptations of the north Hollywood shootout. I almost didn't watch it because I was already familiar with the content, but very glad I did. Thanks for the excellent video!

My mom was there for their first bank robbery, not much to say about it they fired into the ceiling and she sat on the ground till they left. She said she thought they had blanks loaded till they left and realized there were holes on the ceiling. Wild
The editing, music, commentary and stories are top notch. Very engaging and sitting on the edge of your seat is inevitable. Good work man!
And the background music was great also.
Popo you were born to narrate shootout videos
How has no one commented on how much the music slaps and how pro level this mini doc is made ❤❤❤❤😮
They just didn’t know when to quit. An old guy I once knew had been an ex con. He is since dead but had robbed a banks in in the 70’s. He said it’s not like the movies. You do everything possible to avoid the police. The minute they make contact, you’ve lost. You might as well give up. He was arrested because he didn’t know when to quit and a co conspirator ratted him out. He did “one last robbery,” but had a bad feeling.
I mean he's 100% right. In real life you can't win against law enforcment outside a court room. You can shoot all you want but it becomes you VS thousands of Officers, Deputies, Agents, and Marshals.
I'm wondering why they're robbing a bank if they have $400,000 back at the house.

I'd love to hear more about how this incident led to the "militarization" of police, and the reasons why.
I thought it was common knowledge? The police needed better guns instead of revolvers and shotguns.
Well this was the Catalyst for...mmmhmn...maybe Waco too.
Metropolitan areas (urban and suburban) should have National Guard stationed and always on standby for things like this. People in the big cities have proven time and time again (especially recently) that they are sadistic animals who need military style policing.
@@toytacambery9427 but be careful. It's a slippery slope that may turn them against the innocent people. Good cops are leaving, bad cops are coming in. Look at videos of the Summer 2020 rioting. The cops in leftist cities like Portland and Seattle did nothing, or very little to stop the rioting. The same asshole rioters spray painting ACAB on buildings were calling the cops for help when normies defended themselves from the rioters, I meant marxist terrorists.
That's a great point that actually a lot of people are not aware of. This incident changed police depts across the nation. I actually lived only 2 miles away from this incident at the time it happened. I would sit at home with my police scanner on everyday cuz of where I lived there was ALWAYS crazy stuff coming across my scanner and on this day I remember hearing the shots being fired from my house and then remember hearing all the chatter on the TAC frequencies. I'll never forget this day. This was literally like a scene from a movie. It reminds me of that crazy sh00tout in the movie HEAT in downtown Los Angeles. That was one of the best sh00tout scenes in ANY movie even to this day!!
This presentation of the shootout is a 10/10 wow very well executed.
Awesome breakdown. I've always been fascinated by the North Hollywood Shootout, both as an isolated event and a watershed moment in the militarization of police. Who knows what things would be like had this never happened.
The "militarization" still would have happened due to other incidents but the body armor, uniforms and tactics help the police do there job but probably the most important benefit for them, to keep them alive another day to answer another call from dispatch from someone calling for help on one of the worst days of there life.
I just love how both of you are acting like cops would've even needed an actual excuse to "militarize" for even another decade... 😒
@@seand.g423 I just love how you're acting like they wouldn't.
Police are not suspost to be a standing army, they will eventually, and have, turned on citizens!
A swat team cant even stop a teenage school shooter what does militarizing the police even do exactly?
This was a great video... I know this story has been covered 10000 times but this video was one of the best I've seen on this shootout. This was a huge moment in American History because after this shooting is when Police started carrying rifles in their cars and being more militarized.
I can't believe it's back. Thanks man. @popo medic. You did it
You have a knack for throwing in absolute bangers for music.
Don’t forget that at the time there was an “assault weapons ban,” in effect. As you can see, it’s clearly an effective method for preventing crime.
According to your logic, why bother having any laws. Murderers are still going to murder. And rapists are still going to rape. So lets just abolish all laws and live in complete anarchy.
Is that why australia has so many armed bank robberies and Maas shootings? I also went to school when I was a kid not even having the thought of a shooting happening in my mind
@@danielcalderone6244 slippery slope fallacy
he did not argue that, you extended his logic far beyond its reasonable scope.
It is unlikely that he wants regulations on firearms to be thrown out, instead, he likely wants more *effective* methods of regulation instead of a blanket "no assault weapons", as it does not stop criminals. As to what those more effective methods are, I cannot say.
Bans dont prevent crime, but there is literal mountains of evidence that assault weapon bans have lowered overall crime. But trying to frame it as "it will prevent all crime" is insane, nothing will, but it lowers it 100% and this has been proven countless times, just look it up on google scholar if you dont believe me
You can pick your friends.... You can pick your nose.... Your Logic there for dictates you can pick you friends nose
