  • Join me as I make a dress what was worn by Vivien Leigh and Paulette Goddard in their screen tests for the part of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With The Wind. For this dress i upcycle an old dress that i already had which was 1660s in style and take it apart and recut it into a 1930s version of an 1860s crinoline dress.

    When I was in college, we did "Hamlet", and I made a changeable taffeta coat for Polonious. It was Sage Green & Amber.
    Changeable taffeta may be my favorite fabric, visually. But to work with it, is terrible. I set in the (flat-lined) sleeves twice (the entire coat was flat-lined, of course), and got it right the second time. Thankfully.
    It was beautiful, and was used in a recent-ish production of "The Arabian Nights". So sitting in the audience, and recognizing my work, was a delight.

      That’s so funny I find shot taffeta to be one of the easiest fabrics to work with. What did you find so difficult about it? 😄

    Love it! I love that 1660s dress, but it's even more fun to see you take that dress and make it into this dress. Came out great! I would love to see any of the costumes from Jezebel.

    I'd like to vote for the dress that has the plaid underlay. In the book, On The Road To Tara, the fabric appears to look black, pink and plaid.
    If you want another dress from a different film, it would be Top Hat Ginger Rogers's ostrich dress. Some articles say she designed it. I do not know who did, but it sure was beautiful.

    This dress was specifically mentioned in the novel GWTW as the dress Scarlett was to wear to the Wilkes ball the night of the BBQ at Twelve Oaks. "On the bed lay the apple-green, watered-silk ball dress with its festoons of ecru lace, neatly packed in a large cardboard box. It was ready to be carried to Twelve Oaks to be donned before the dancing began, but Scarlett shrugged at the sight of it. If her plans were successful, she would not wear that dress tonight." (Chapter 5). A version of the gown was made, but was never worn in the film by VL.

      That was the other dress that was used in the screen tests which is also worn by an extra in the film. I hope to do that one too one day.

    I love how you recreate Scarlett/Vivien Leigh’s dresses. So detailed and I love how you repurposed another dress to make this one. I have a suggestion for a video in future which is Scarlett’s mourning dress and matching bonnet she wears in the bazaar scene when she’s dancing with Rhett. There’s something about how beautiful that dress flows when she dances and how the skirt flows away from her when she spins or maybe the green dress with lace Vivien wears when she is being tested with Hattie McDaniel when she is preparing for the BBQ and when they are testing the hairstyles and makeup.

    Yet another very stylish costume. A lot of your fabric choices have been excellent, but this one is outstanding! I had to watch this vlog twice as I spent most of the first time gazing in awe at how gorgeous it was. I don't know if im imagining things but have you edited this at slightly less speed than your earlier edits. The only issue I had with your vlogs previously was that the construction of the garment seemed to me to be slightly manic. I love all your work and I'm thankful that your subscriber count is increasing, with a bit of luck you may reach 1000 next week! Good luck with that! x

      I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. Yes I have slowed down the editing in this one and the one that was posted last week too. Fingers crossed I get to 1000 this week, I may start Patreon then.

      yes that would be wonderful to do, I would need a lot of money to do that, but I love doing the less famous costumes.

      @@jameskellylondon2428 Ok, I vaguely remember seeing the tests before (as part of some documentary).. Interesting to see how they narrowed it down to find the perfect cast. However, I do wish Jeffrey Lynn had been given the role of Ashley since Leslie Howard never quite felt like the right fit for me.. . ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    I expected to see cartridge pleating in the skirt waistband. I do enjoy watching your techniques. Much easier to adjust the hemline by taking it in at the waist.

    • @jameskellylondon2428
      @jameskellylondon2428  5 місяців тому

      Thank you. Levelling the skirt from the top is a period technique. And easy to do when the skirt is made from straight widths of fabric.
