It's hard to imagine that women dressed like this at some point. How did these dresses not cost a fortune!?! They're so much fabric, and it's all high quality, and hand stitch detailing.. how were they affordable to anyone.. and yet everyone wore these styles? How?
It is worth mentioning that Scarlett's wedding dress is supposed to have been her mother's. It would have been made sometime around 1840 and it reflects the fashions of that era. Also, the wartime wedding was so sudden, there was no time to alter the dress so it fairly bags on Scarlett who is much smaller than her mother.
That is correct!! But 1830s gigot or leg-o-mutton sleeves reached their widest point between 1830 and 1833. Around 1836 there is a complete shift in the silhouette of the day and by 1840 the large gigot or leg-o-mutton sleeves had disappeared.
@@CulturedElegance Thanks for the clarification. The film's wedding dress is a faithful recreation of the one described in the book. The back story of the dress is not explained in the film but it shows on screen nonetheless.
Apparently, the wedding dress was actually made to fit the actress who played Scarlett’s mother. That’s a piece of great attention to detail from the wardrobe department.
@@CulturedElegance The puffed upper sleeves were brought into vogue by Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, the wife of William IV. They quickly fell out of fashion once William passed and Victoria ascended to the throne.

Scarlett and Rhett honeymooned in New Orleans, not europe, but it's an easy mistake to make since they look a lot alike. When she is in bed in the scene where he is standing beside her, that is supposed to be on a Mississippi River boat. People often overnighted on them traveling between St. Louis and New Orleans. I love the video on the lovely dresses, it is so sad they can't or won't make anymore films like "Gone with the Wind." If you're interested in reading the book, you can do so online for free now. Love your channel!
Viviane Leigh was such a beautiful, talented actress! I love all the dresses in this movie!💕 I just noticed that Scarlett is wearing a mourning brooch with a design with human hair. Very accurate since mourning attire would feature the deceased hair in jewelry worned by their loved ones.
I noticed this brooch also! It's been my favourite movie since I first saw it, and I still watch it regularly...I know every word that's coming next! Yet I didn't notice the mourning brooch until I'd seen Catilin Doughty's video about mourning jewellery on her channel, "Ask a Mortician" - which I highly recommend, by the way. She can help you through all things "death and dying", and answers all of the questions regarding end of life...which I have found particularly helpful.
@j.whiteoak6408 even if it does seem creepy by today's standards, mourning brooches made from the deceased loved ones' hair was customary in the 19th century.
Hair brooches weren't only for mourning the dead. People used to make them to give to loved ones to wear to war or when separated from a loved one, . My family had a few around when I was small but I don't know what happened to them. I remember they were tiny braids of hair turned or coiled artfully in the brooch. We had one that had my great-grandmother's bright red hair. My mother moped all her life none of us kids got her hair.
@dianegreene1958 I always thought hair brooches were just for mourning. Thank you for telling me that. I really like history, and that is interesting. Years ago, people couldn't call or text a loved when away from them, and the postal service was probably slower and less dependable than it is now .
@Rose Marie Yes, I love that dress 👗 too and it is was very difficult to choose just one from the many masterpieces of craftsmanship exhibited throughout this historic film. Scarlett looks very put together and sophisticated in that one in particular. Love it!
Don't know if anyone noticed, but one of the very rare times you can see the framing of Scarlet's hoop skirts is when she's wearing the War Dress. The costumers were amazing in their detail: you can see the hoop frame thru her skirt because Scarlet isn't wearing the usual layers of flounced petticoats between dress and hoop. She's likely had to sacrifice what would have been yards and yards of fine cotton fabric for wound dressings for the soldiers.
Hands down the red dress from Ashley’s party. It is gorgeous! My Mom calls it her “Bitch Dress”. I love how Melanie makes everyone greet her. My second dress is the white dress with the blue velvet bolero that leads to the need for the red dress. Scarlett is definitely a clothes horse. If you haven’t read the book you should. In the book, Melanie spends the next week after Ashley’s party taking Scarlett to all of the major society ladies to have tea. Melanie’s message was “Love me, love my dog.” Melanie had a quiet strength to her that was just as strong as Scarlett’s outward strength.
Melanie did snap at some of the snooty society ladies later on in the book where her attitude was tactful, but she basically told them that she was tired of them disparaging her sister in law, and if they didn't stop it they would no longer be welcome in her home.
My favorite was the green and white dress that she wore to Twelve Oaks. My late mother was 19 when GWTW debuted in 1939. It remained her favorite movie of all time. Her favorite dress was the ruby red, especially when Rhett leaves Scarlett at the front door of the Wilkes'. Mom loved the red netting that surrounded Scarlett's hair and face.
Indeed, Walter Plunkett's sumptuous creations deserved an Oscar, they were and are STILL "the stuff dreams (and icons) are made of!" The way he draped the scarlet tulle over that magnificent velvet evening gown for Leigh's entrance at Ashley's bday party, the dramatic asymmetry of the crimson ostrich feathers -- mirroring Leigh's haughty, disdainful arched eyebrow... She made Time stand still + take a 2nd glance! Scarlett was NOT ONLY an UNESCORTED, DROP DEAD SCANDEL, but a DROP-DEAD FEMME FATALE!!! The ensemble of TALENT -- of actors, cast and crew, did NOT MISS ONE DETAIL in the production of this masterpiece! It is sheer perfection STILL.
I loved the dress Scarlet wore to the BBQ, at Twelve Oaks. I love the blue dress in the painting. Last, but not least, I love the Ruby red dress Rhett picked for her, as she was going to Ashley’s surprise birthday party. Vivian Leigh was a stunning woman!! ❤
I think the blue velvet dress with the spectacular white lace shawl is so indicative of the character, that it is an unforgettable statement of the movie. At one time u could order that “portrait” from the Turner store in ATL. On the bottom was GWTW 1939-1989. It was quite striking when framed. IDK if it is attainable today. There were many items for sale, as the movie was 50 yrs old, at that time. The original portrait was found in an auditorium in downtown ATL.
0:10 - I'm a rich teenager. Do not approach, sir, unless you are worthy. 5:05 - I'm wearing the living room drapes. I'm starving, help, kind sir! 10:57 - I'm in estrus. Do not approach, sir, unless you are worthy! Seriously, it's rare when costume so plainly telegraphs both plot and a character's mood in a movie.
The red dress wasn't her choice. She'd been caught with Ashley and it was a scandal, and Rhett would not let her play the innocent by going to Ashley's party in something demure. He basically dressed her as a "scarlet woman" and she decided to brazen it out.
@@hodgeelmwood8677 The thing is that the scandal mongers hadn't caught Ashley and Scarlett doing anything wrong really. In that particular moment she and Ashley were just two friends reminiscing about a lifestyle that they lost, along with friends and loved ones during the Civil war. And they innocently comforted each other. But of course, India Wilkes, and the others saw something very different.
I saw the green and red dress on display back in 2019 and my heart almost stopped. They also had the famous white and black dress from My Fair Lady, some dresses from Joan Crawford's personal wardrobe, dresses from Easter Parade, Singing in the Rain and many more. The dresses were also much smaller than I anticipated as well. Women were tinier back then.
I’m so jealous! How cool to see all of those beautiful costumes! I probably wouldn’t be able to leave the room and security would have to pull me away from that red dress lol
Wow, you’ve been very lucky to see these gorgeous iconic costumes! I’m in Australia & the only exhibitions I’ve seen are of Marilyn Monroe & Grace Kelly. I was very disappointed in Grace’s black dress from Rear Window though. It looks really lovely on screen but in real life it was made of muslin & looked cheap. Same with MM’s gold lamè pleated dress, the material just looked cheap. It goes to show that it’s the women wearing the clothes that makes them gorgeous, not the clothes themselves 😊
The green velvet curtain dress remains my favorite. Besides the amazing look I appreciate the brilliant idea to turn a curtain into a dress. Scarlett showed great presence of mind and smartness in times of need.
I absolutely adore Scarlett's Ruby Evening Gown - Rhett said to her, "Nothing modest will do tonight - You won't cheat Miss Melanie out of the pleasure of turning you out of her home tonight!" And how magnificent and defiant she looked standing there, alone!! I don't think that gown would look out of place on a tall, willowy model at the Met Gala in today's society! But the opening scene with Scarlett wearing her white day dress ... absolutely gorgeous! "War, War, War ... If I hear another word about the War, I shall just scream" ... Yes, Gone With The Wind has been my favourite movie for 30 years!!!
I loved all of the dresses! My absolute favorite has always been the BBQ dress. I first saw GWTW when I was about 13 or 14. I fell in love with the dress. My second favorite is the blue velvet in the painting in Rhett’s room. I am currently crocheting dresses for dolls. One doll is a Southern Belle. I am slowly creating the BBQ dress with a straw hat.
I actually oddly love her in the black mourning dresses; the simplicity shows off her beauty in an understated way. But the white dress with the blue velvet jacket might be the prettiest. The ruby dress worn to Melanie’s party is too anachronistic.
100% agree. The giant cameo brooch is absolutely genius and somehow manages not to be vulgar. Also, her wedding and mourning hairstyle (with the brooch nestled at the back) is very, very sophisticated. Her whole visage is what the French call soignée - “pulled together, of a piece”.
When i was about 8 my grandma got me some Scarlett O'Hara paper dolls. Which I think was more like a collectors item than an actual childs toy. They had every actual dress mentioned here in fine detail and I have to say while I love all of her dresses the white day dress with blue velvet jacket was my favorite. 2nd runner up was the striped day dress. I wish I had of actually kept that paper doll book. It was quite nice. But at 8 I cut it all up..
I had the same paper dolls. My babysitter had them and gave them to me because i played with them so much. I remember putting the green and white dress on her more then the others..
I love all the dresses! One of my favorites is the green dress she wore at the BBQ. Inspired on it, I made a quinceañera dress similar to this for my sister on her special day.
The white day dress with the blue velvet jacket is always one of my favorites. I'm just partial to those colors to begin with, but they're such a fresh, cool change from the darker, richer hues that Scarlett wears so often. She looks bright and youthful in that outfit, like a new spring sky.
Walter Plunkett was a brillianr costume designer who worked on some of Hollywood's most famous pictures. He not only did all the costumes for GWTW - not just Scarlett's dresses - but also for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and many others. His interesting bio is on the internet.
Thank you for this, I was wondering who had designed such perfect dresses, it would have taken a lot of research to get them so accurate to the time, never mind having to actually sew them. The studio must have had some brilliant seamstresses.
Those brilliant costumes remind me of the beautiful ones in OUTLANDER, Claire's wedding dress took four months to make. The Paris gowns were outstanding as well.
They are all beautiful! The green and gold dressing gown takes my breath away. Vivian Leigh made the dresses even more beautiful, she played the part of Scarlett so well. This is one of my favorite movies, and I am trying to collect the dolls by Madame Alexander which were inspired by the film.
believe it or not, the very last mourning dress with the long train is my fave - its understated and elegant and quite demure while being reverent.....and the large broach topped it off perfectly...love this vid.
Being a HUGE GWTW fan (book and film), I so appreciate the time and effort you went into to bring us all of Scarlett's dresses. Of course they're all fabulous but I personally loved the dressing gowns because you rarely see them in film. I especially loved the green and yellow one. Imagine living in that time where you could actually wear this for a few hours?
The BBQ dress and straw hat are so pretty and suit an ingenue, as Scarlett was at that time. The white dress and blue spencer jacket are superb for an older manipulative woman, and the red party dress Rhett makes her wear just shows how Rhett despaired of what her thought had happened. So the clothes also tell the 'Story of Scarlett'.
i love how her wedding dress was her mothers hand me down from the 1830s, the gigot sleeves the fact it was fitted to the actress playing the mother, hence why its so much longer on her and without her hoopskirt it would droop even more, its even loose throughout the bodice on her, having the silk be cream or yellowed signifying its age was a nice touch, looking almost golden in some frames
although scarlett being the eldest born at around 1845 it would be somewhat strange that mr and mrs O'Hara took so long after the mid 1830s (date i pinned for the size of the gigot sleeves on her mother wedding dress) to have their first child in the era where as many children where wanted as possible by those who came from money and a good name
and the way they show her maturing from mostly short sleeved/low necked dresses even in day time to higher and higher collars (albeit with a very deep V) shows how shes changed from the war
In the book Mrs O Hara had lost her first three sons in infancy before Scarlet and her sisters were born. Not unusual in a time when infant mortality was a sad fact of life.
*The red ruby evening gown is so lovely. I always loved that look but that green velvet curtain dress is great too. Bravo for the creativity. I love both of those, probably the red ruby evening gown a little more though.* 🤔
My favorites are the white day dress with the fitted blue velvet jacket. And I have always loved the barbecue dress. A friend wore a wedding gown reminiscent of the green printed barbecue dress because her Mom said that she too “tainted” to wear pure white! Lucky girl, ended up with a far more beautiful wedding dress!
This is such a fun video! Thank you for this work. These costumes are so phenomenal you can't wait to see what she is wearing next. Vivien is stunning and moves so gracefully she does full justice to them all. Picking a favorite? Impossible, really!
The red evening gown is of course my favorite. If you love movie read the book, you won't be disappointed. Ashley kept leading Scarlett along because he was a coward and too much of a gentleman to tell her how much in love he was with Melanie. Because Scarlett couldn't marry Ashley she married her sisters' suitors for her own needs, the first one being she'd hoped to make Ashley jealous.
I have to agree with you on both counts. There just isn't one actress in the past 30 years to equal her looks or her talents. No glamour and no finesse in the current crop of ladies.
The very 1st dress (white w/red belt/short sleeves) worn in the film is my favorite bc it’s fresh & happy. It wowed me when I saw the movie when I was 7yo, and I still feel the same when I see it as a woman 😊 It’s just a splendid dress.
I think her Christmas gown & the portrait gown are my favourites I can imagine the excess of the work sleeves was used for patching... The white dress actually had _broderie anglaise_ a form of cut-work, rather than applique...
I love Gone with the Wind, and if you've never read the book, you need to. It goes much deeper into some of the women's personalities. The movie costumes are beautiful in the sense that I believe they were designed to create the atmosphere of the mythical "Old South" or the "Lost Cause" that was the main view of Southern History at the time. With this goal in mind, you can understand that some of these dresses are more authentic than others. Enjoy these for what they are, but if you want to see what women were actually wearing, look at some period photographs, patterns made from museum garments, and even fashion plates (although the latter were romanticized.)
The dress Miss Scarlett wears in the opening scenes -the ruffled white one - is very pretty, but not precisely accurate historically speaking. In 1861 women wore long sleeves during the daylight hours. The movie is a little more romanticized than the book, and in fact Tara was not supposed to look quite so stately, it was just a farm house really. I agree with you - the myth of the "old South" was played up more in the movie than in the book ... Margaret Mitchell was in fact more sympathetic to Black folks and left her entire estate to Morehouse College (a historically Black college).
I’ve slowly accepted that the creative choice for making Tara and Twelve Oaks so elevated was to help the audience understand what the southerners homes felt like to them. They felt they lived in big beautiful homes and took them for granted. That way it’s maybe more easily understood what the plantation owners felt the war took away from them. That way of living was romanticized by them as time went on too.
@@mrbutch308 I never knew about Mitchell's contributions to Morehouse, and learning this amazed me, considering how racist the movie is. Mitchell wrote the book, so I presume she had little control over the racist elements of the film.
@@aaguero Yes, you are right. Mitchell washed her hands of the movie. She was especially amused at how large Twelve Oaks was - comparing it to Grand Central Station. For his part Selznick (the producer of the movie) wanted to give his audience what he assumed they wanted to see - the myth of the gracious Old South, the whole Lost Cause narrative - which we all know was a lie and historical revisionism at it's worst.
Favorite: the green and white summer dress. Even when I read the book as a girl, that was my favorite of all of Scarlett's dresses. Carol Burnett in the curtain dress...never get tired of that one either.
Scarlett starts out wearing a white dress to also represent her girlishness and innocence. I also think the gown she wears while Melanie is reading David Copperfield had more of a lavender-periwinkle colored appliques rather than 'sky blue' ones as mentioned and her skirt is a plum color.
This was so neat to see. I watched this movie many times as a teenager because we could rent it for free at our local library. The only thing is that we had a black and white tv.
Now you're speaking my love language! This was so fun! And slightly off topic, but i love how color coded the different types of women were in movies and tv. In old western shows the pure, good girls wore blue, the girls that seemed good but were conniving always wore green (black lace accents if extra naughty), and the ones who were rotten to the core wore red and black. Little Joe never could resist a girl in green lol.
Good video! That’s a hard choice to pick just One!! I can’t believe I never realized she had 2 “War dresses”. Good call when you pointed out that the sleeves were different on the pinkish one! ✌️
The role of Scarlett was highly prized and a number of actresses came forward to compete for it. Vivien Leigh won the role and did her acting skills proud.
I read some place (I don't remember where) that Vivien Leigh was already scheduled to play Scarlett, but the studio executives wanted to give the impression "Who is going to play Scarlett?" build-up.
You should do a video on "Raintree County" from 1957 which stars Elizabeth Taylor and takes place during the same time period as "Gone with The Wind". It would be interesting to compare the costumes of both movies, especially Vivien Leigh vs Elizabeth Taylor.
@@marilyntaylor9577 I totally agree. Taylor did play a "Scarlet - Type" character in "Raintree County" in 1957. The major advantage Taylor had over Leigh was that Taylor could do a pretty good "Southern" accent whereas Leigh could not. Otherwise - Leigh was at the peak of her beauty and did a great performance. I do think Taylor could have matched her in the acting department, especially in that role. Also, I always thought Taylor - as a child - could have played Scarlet and Rhetts daughter - "Bonnie Blue Butler". I always thought Taylor could have been great in that small role. I always found the biggest weakness of GWTW was the casting on Bonnie Blue Butler.
@@jimmydaves I hadn’t thought of that, she would have looked just like Vivian Leigh. It’s been decades since I’ve seen it, but I always thought Raintree County was on the drab side. Even though I’m a Hoosier.
@@marilyntaylor9577 Well, GWTW is a classic and one of the best movies ever made. "Raintree County" was an average film basically with great costumes and a solid performance by Taylor.
I love the dresses. I do notice that they have a lot of 1930s influence to them, mostly in the buttons at the front of the bodices.. I am a vintage clothing collector, and those buttons are not very accurate to the 1860s, but it doesn't take away from my admiration. My favorite ones are the curtain dress and the blue one she wore when she was attacked.
As I’ve watched the movie more, I notice it too. That red/burgundy dress we all love is very of the era. The hairstyles have a hint of late 30s as well. Period films of today still do that sort of thing. I think it’s done intentionally to “make it easier for the audience to connect with the characters” or whatever.
If all the costumes had been completely historically accurate, they probably wouldn't have been so beautiful. Walter Plunkett did an amazing job with his interpretation of civil war and reconstruction fashion.
My favorite dresses will forever be the green and white dress during her and Rhett's visit to Tara after their honeymoon, and the dress she wears on their stroll with baby Bonnie Blue. And her red velvet dressing gown 😍
My favorite is the bbq dress. As a young girl in high school many, many years ago the hoop gowns were going out of style. I’m glad I had the opportunity to wear a hoop dress and wish all girls had the same experience. One truly feels like a princess when you are wearing a large hoop.
My mom got a part time job just to get me a fancy dress made for my then boyfriend's prom in 1966. (We married in 1969, when I was 18 and were married for 50 years.) The dress was a strapless lite blue dotted Swiss, just like Cinderella's dress. The skirt was scalloped with a flounce of netting underneath. Full, blowup, hoop skirt too. Long white gloves and a white rabbit fur stole. It was her dream and mine. Unfortunately, she had a brain aneurism just 2 weeks before the prom and even though I didn't want to go to prom because she was dying, I got dressed up and went to the hospital. By the grace of God and a surgeon in Canada she did not die but she didn't remember me at all. She never got her memory back of me, but she knew who my husband was, the brain is a crazy thing. Sorry this is so long but this brough back so many memories.
Remember the scene in "The King And I" when all the wives wore hoop dresses to impress the British. Then the king walks in and they all bow to the floor with the dresses going up in the air to expose their drawers. Hilarious!
I loved the white dress with the red belt and rose flowers just at the beginning. Shows the innocents, but now finding how to overcome, gosh, I would love to have tried on any one of these gowns.
My favorite outfit is the high-collared white dress, with its short blue jacket and adorable pointed white hat when she is caught with Ashley. Second place is a tie for the shocking red gown and the green & white dress at the BBQ. Honorable mentions to that green hat from Paris from Rhett and Mammy’s red petticoat. ❤
When i saw the movie first time, my heart almost stopped, when Szarlet arrives to Melanies party. The dress, Her face, her demeanor, her spite to everyone and her beauty is AMAZING!!!!! Probably the strongest moment in the film.
I do love this story and the movie. I first read this book when I was twelve, and have probably read it at least half a dozen times. Her gowns are all stunning thus it’s hard to choose just one.🥰👍
I read the book twice and have lost count of how many times I've seen the movie, but I believe at least six times, maybe more. I almost got to the point I could recite the script along with the actors by heart, knew what they were going to say word for word before they even said them. lol Loved the movie and the book so much, still do.
My colouring is very similar to Scarlett's, and we both look good in black, which not everyone does. My favourite of all Scarlett's dresses is the green and white one she wore early on to the picnic, although her curtain dress is magnificent and a true work of art. She was a woman who could really wear the clothes she had, and she truly owned them once they were put on her. She had a style that stood out, and I believe that today she'd be an influencer if she were a real person.
I loved everything Scarlet wore in the movie but my all time favorite is the red velvet dress Rhett insists she wear to the birthday party. It really didn’t matter what Scarlet wore…..Vivian Leigh was a stunningly beautiful woman, and paired with Clark Gable they made a stunning pair. One of my all time favorite movies.
I drew and made little water colors of Scarlet's costumes when I was 10 years old andfirst saw "GWTW" on HBO. The cable channel controller had push down buttons and this was when cable tv had no commercials.
Gone With The Wind is my favorite movie. The strength and determination to survive everything she has to deal with is remarkable. My favorite dress is the ruby evening gown. Very impressive. Thank you for making the video. I appreciate you and love this.
I saw this movie probably 15 times before I was 25. Not long ago I tried to watch it and just couldn't enjoy it. Thanks for sharing this. It's great to see these gorgeous costumes and Vivien Leigh out of the context of the film. My favorite is the red "shame" dress she wore to Ashley's birthday (I say, providing context)
There's errors at 7:24 and 7:44: they don't go to Europe and they're never in France. They go to New Orleans on a Riverboat for their honeymoon. Otherwise, a well done video!

The pink & black stripped day dress and the one immediately after are my favorites. But seriously, Vivien Leigh at the time could wear a jute sack and still be magnificent.
I love how Walter Plunkett, the costume designer for the film, gave Scarlett her own style while keeping with the fashion of the time period with a greater detail to accuracy than most period piece films.
My favorite is the white and green dress that Scarlett wore to the barbecue at Twelve Oaks. My favorite character is Melanie Hamilton Wilkes. As many times as I've seen this movie I had never noticed before that one of Scarlett's dresses had birds on the shoulders. About 20 years later Leslie Caron wore a beautiful ivory gown with a blackbird on each shoulder in the movie "Gigi". I believe that dress was designed by Cecil Beaton.
That red ruby evening gown to Melanies party to me is one of the most iconic in cinematic history.

The day dress with a blue velvet jacket is my absolutely favorite (and it's soooo difficult to choose just one from this extraordinary film!)
Love that one!!! I agree!!!!
@Rose Marie Yes, I love that dress 👗 too and it is was very difficult to choose just one from the many masterpieces of craftsmanship exhibited throughout this historic film. Scarlett looks very put together and sophisticated in that one in particular. Love it!
It’s my second favourite, I have to say the red velvet dress worn to Ashley’s party.
The red velvet gown worn to Ashley’s party, followed by the blue jacket, white dress worm earlier that day.
The white day dress with the blue jacket is my favorite also. All of Scarlett's costumes are so beautiful.
Excellent point!!
great info. thanks.
I read it was David O. Selznick that demanded the proper period details down to the last buttom
I bless him for that then, @@JRAMSEY000
I noticed from behind
Everyone is fascinated by Scarlet, and she IS amazing.
But Melanie... Melanie, I LOVE. What an amazing pearl amongst women!
Melanie did snap at some of the snooty society ladies later on in the book where her attitude was tactful, but she basically told them that she was tired of them disparaging her sister in law, and if they didn't stop it they would no longer be welcome in her home.
Those are my favorite two dresses as well. Both are stunning.
Yes . The movie is wonderful BUT the book gives you so much more insight in to why Scarlett was the woman she was
@@cathypound3719 I agree although I read the book when I was 12.
Favorite - Ruby Red party dress! She looks stunning in it!
Definitely!!!
Is there any dress she doesn't look stunning in? Fiddle-de-dee!
Same! The ruby red party dress is my fave Scarlett dress. My close second was the Twelve Oaks green and white dress.
That curtain dress was part of a Carol Burnett skit except she left the rod in. I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in my life
"I saw it in the window and I just couldn't resist." Every time I watch that sketch I just die laughing.
OMG, I remember that skit!!! I nearly peed my pants I laughed so hard!! 😂😂😂😂
Had a teacher that wore that outfit to school where I worked. I yelled "Went with a Wind!"
I liked it when she kept falling down the stairs
I remember that! 😂
Loved reading your comment
@@CulturedElegance Thank you! That is so sweet of you recognizing my mom and her love of GWTW.
Indeed, Walter Plunkett's sumptuous creations deserved an Oscar, they were and are STILL "the stuff dreams (and icons) are made of!"
The way he draped the scarlet tulle over that magnificent velvet evening gown for Leigh's entrance at Ashley's bday party, the dramatic asymmetry of the crimson ostrich feathers -- mirroring Leigh's haughty, disdainful arched eyebrow...
@CulturedElegance I'm honored, as I can tell you are a cultured lady, well-educated and articulate. 💞
@@debrahouston2884 That is very kind of you. Thank you!
Love everything you said!
The ruby dress is ICONIC!
I agree with you 💃
I think the blue velvet dress with the spectacular white lace shawl is so indicative of the character, that it is an unforgettable statement of the movie.
I can't count how many times I've watched this film over the years it's the type of film that never gets boring I love love love this film ❤
The garden BBQ dress is one of my all-time favorite dresses in any movie. Absolutely stunning.
I think she looked exquisite in the white dress with the short blue velvet jacket!
So pretty!!
Most definitely!!!
Well, not so much tinier, but more normal sized. Humans are not supposed to be as “large” as they are today. We are a very obese society.
Check out the Ava Gardner museum.
The green velvet curtain dress remains my favorite. Besides the amazing look I appreciate the brilliant idea to turn a curtain into a dress. Scarlett showed great presence of mind and smartness in times of need.
I love the white dress with the little blue jacket. That dress gets me every time!.
My favorite dress that Scarlett wore is the white ruffled day dress. Such a pretty dress!
I agree!! So pretty 😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, she looked like she did facing the Yankees!
The black and white dress doesnt get enough love.
It does from me!
@@leeannasloan2292 they were all really pretty. Its hard to pick a favorite
I love paper dolls!
Dover Books published a lot of paper doll books, including Vivien Leigh’s costumes from GWTW.
What a beautiful video. I always loved all her dresses in this film. Classic movie and Vivian Leigh was just so beautiful. ❤❤❤
I love all the dresses! One of my favorites is the green dress she wore at the BBQ.
Inspired on it, I made a quinceañera dress similar to this for my sister on her special day.
Wow how lovely!!
Amazing to think that she wasn't even 30 at the end of this movie. She lived entire lifetimes during it.
Quite true!!!❤️⚜️
Thank you for this, I was wondering who had designed such perfect dresses, it would have taken a lot of research to get them so accurate to the time, never mind having to actually sew them. The studio must have had some brilliant seamstresses.
Those brilliant costumes remind me of the beautiful ones in OUTLANDER, Claire's wedding dress took four months to make. The Paris gowns were outstanding as well.
Red Ruby for Ashleys Birthday! Absolutely timeless and stunning! Of course Vivian Leigh can wear ANYTHING!
The white day dress with the velvet jacket is my absolute favorite dress in the movie 😃
That was wonderful! Gone With The Wind is my favorite movie! The dresses were awesome!
i love how her wedding dress was her mothers hand me down from the 1830s, the gigot sleeves the fact it was fitted to the actress playing the mother, hence why its so much longer on her and without her hoopskirt it would droop even more, its even loose throughout the bodice on her, having the silk be cream or yellowed signifying its age was a nice touch, looking almost golden in some frames
and also love the detail of her reusing her hats from before the war since they wouldnt have had the luxury of new milinery
although scarlett being the eldest born at around 1845 it would be somewhat strange that mr and mrs O'Hara took so long after the mid 1830s (date i pinned for the size of the gigot sleeves on her mother wedding dress) to have their first child in the era where as many children where wanted as possible by those who came from money and a good name
and the way they show her maturing from mostly short sleeved/low necked dresses even in day time to higher and higher collars (albeit with a very deep V) shows how shes changed from the war
In the book Mrs O Hara had lost her first three sons in infancy before Scarlet and her sisters were born. Not unusual in a time when infant mortality was a sad fact of life.
It reminded me of Lady Diana Spencer's wedding dress. The dress wore Diana and the costume wedding dress wore Vivian Leigh.
*The red ruby evening gown is so lovely. I always loved that look but that green velvet curtain dress is great too. Bravo for the creativity. I love both of those, probably the red ruby evening gown a little more though.* 🤔
I agree!!! Great point!🤩
THE WHITE AND BLUE DRESS WITH THAT GORGEOUS WHITE BONNETT. THAT DRESS WAS STUNNING.
The white ruffle day dress at the very beginning of the film is my favorite. She is so young, bright, and full of hope.
DRESSES ARE BEAUTIFUL AND SO WAS SHE
I have to agree with you on both counts.
I think her Christmas gown & the portrait gown are my favourites
I can imagine the excess of the work sleeves was used for patching...
The white dress actually had _broderie anglaise_ a form of cut-work, rather than applique...
Yes indeed!! And yes so beautiful
I saw it in the window, and I just couldn't resist it..😂😂
Thanks for putting this together. Beautiful dresses!
Love them all. But I’ve always thought the white with the little blue velvet jacket and white hat are wonderful!
@@mrbutch308 I wish more people knew about this. I'm so tired of hearing others romanticize the film. It really, really is terribly racist.
Her dresses worn during this movie were so beautiful!!! I LOVED seeing them!!
The green one worn at the party is one of my favorite!!
Favorite: the green and white summer dress. Even when I read the book as a girl, that was my favorite of all of Scarlett's dresses. Carol Burnett in the curtain dress...never get tired of that one either.
If I had the figure, I'd never wear anything but that red evening dress❤
Scarlett starts out wearing a white dress to also represent her girlishness and innocence. I also think the gown she wears while Melanie is reading David Copperfield had more of a lavender-periwinkle colored appliques rather than 'sky blue' ones as mentioned and her skirt is a plum color.
The dresses were just gorgeous. ❤
This was so neat to see. I watched this movie many times as a teenager because we could rent it for free at our local library. The only thing is that we had a black and white tv.
I’m so glad you enjoyed! It’s an incredible film! Thank you for sharing!
All those dresses and gowns are stunning!
I cannot pick a favorite, but your editing gave me time to reflect on all the iconic images from this movie. Well done. Thank you.
My favorite is the stunning blue velvet dress in the painting. My favorite colour blue. Thank you for the great video!
Thank you so much!! I never noticed either till I looked very close when making the video!
The role of Scarlett was highly prized and a number of actresses came forward to compete for it. Vivien Leigh won the role and did her acting skills proud.
And honked off Bette Davis!
@@marilyntaylor9577 And Lana Turner.
I read some place (I don't remember where) that Vivien Leigh was already scheduled to play Scarlett, but the studio executives wanted to give the impression "Who is going to play Scarlett?" build-up.
@@stanleycostello9610 It makes sense. Free press.
The Barbeque dress is great and the description in the book is fantastic
You should do a video on "Raintree County" from 1957 which stars Elizabeth Taylor and takes place during the same time period as "Gone with The Wind". It would be interesting to compare the costumes of both movies, especially Vivien Leigh vs Elizabeth Taylor.
Raintree County dresses overblown
I always thought if Elizabeth Taylor had been older, she would have been a wonderful Scarlet
I love all of her dresses. If I had to choose a favorite it would be the white day dress with a blue velvet jacket. 😍💖

It certainly does!! Stunning 💚⚜️
My favorite dress is the white day dress with the blue velvet jacket and that cute little hat, it's just adorable!
My favorite is the bbq dress. As a young girl in high school many, many years ago the hoop gowns were going out of style. I’m glad I had the opportunity to wear a hoop dress and wish all girls had the same experience. One truly feels like a princess when you are wearing a large hoop.
Same! I loved wearing my hoop dress to the eighth grade banquet!

I loved the white dress with the red belt and rose flowers just at the beginning. Shows the innocents, but now finding how to overcome, gosh, I would love to have tried on any one of these gowns.
The pink and black striped with the bell sleeves.
I remembered watching it while I was younger. It's such an eye candy to watch because of the costumes.🤩
Loved the comment. "I saw it in the window and just had to have it"
Gone With The Wind is my favorite movie. The strength and determination to survive everything she has to deal with is remarkable. My favorite dress is the ruby evening gown. Very impressive. Thank you for making the video. I appreciate you and love this.

My favorite is the red "shame" dress she wore to Ashley's birthday (I say, providing context)

The dresses were so beautiful
There's errors at 7:24 and 7:44: they don't go to Europe and they're never in France. They go to New Orleans on a Riverboat for their honeymoon. Otherwise, a well done video!

The pink & black stripped day dress and the one immediately after are my favorites. But seriously, Vivien Leigh at the time could wear a jute sack and still be magnificent.
You reignited an old flame. I forgot how much I loved costumes. I had 8 costume changes in a play once and I just loved it.
There's just something about the red and white day dress, after the Christmas scene. Love it.
I love the white dress with the med blue jacket with raised collar...but they are all stunning!
@10:10 White Day Dress with a Velvet Jacket, 1872 is my absolute favourite. Just so gorgeous.
I really enjoyed this. My favorite one is the one with the little blue jacket.
