The temperature increase in the boiler should be dependent on the current temperature of the boiler. Using the difference between the firebox and boiler temperatures multiplied by some constant would achieve that.
Love it! It's awesome that you're adding realistic train management, looks super fun to play! Can't wait to see the next update. Keep up the good work :)
Good understanding of train theory, although I would prefer to see a proper full-size boiler. I also agree that a normal forward-facing boiler would impact visiblilty too much. However, other configurations do exist. Cab-forward locomotives have the cab at the front and the boiler in the back. The downside is that it cuts off access to the back of the train and the tender. Another interesting design in the camel-back configuration. This is where the cab is mounted on top of the boiler. Not only would this configuration have a unique and interesting aesthetic, it'd also give a better vantage point and still allow for movement around the train.
for some reason this got recommended to me, pretty cool honestly i kind of got obsessed with realism a bit at some point and tried to make things slightly "realistic" in some of my games (i haven't watched the first devlog so i don't know what the game is exactly going to be about, but i dont have time)
as a railway enthusiast, I really appreciate that video game devs are starting to make trains more common in video games, is there a specific real life class of steam engine you plan on basing the locomotive off of, or is it going to be completely freelance?
Maybe add obstacles on the train tracks like ice or smt and the player can either stop the train and clear the road or (with enough speed) crash and destroy the obstacles but it damages the train and if not fast enough it damages the train and stops it as well
I think you should have a big boiler, that blocks the view from the front, but then add a mechanic where the player can lean out the side or pop his head out a sky light, that would add to immersion and tension, as you have to actively check your surroundings
You should later in development add eater eggs from games you got ideas from for example the players train in choo choo Charles could be crashed im a cave but do towards end of development.
afaik there were steam locomotives with boiler behind the cabin, the disadvantage was bad access to coal since you had to run all the way to the back of locomotive
I looove this project so far, and looking forward to updates Quick question, are you planning on requiring the engine to be 'topped up' with fuel and water? For example chopping down trees and using it for the engine, coal being found in the station you mentioned and other similar places, with it being harder to find and more efficient. You can also require water to be found in wells, lakes ect. As for visibility, maybe you would want to model the engine after a smaller narrow gauge engine, i think a smaller train would fit better in a game like this, over more massive engines thats you automatically think of when you think 'steam train', a smaller engine with shorter boiler will also allow you to see you surroundings better, and, depending on the design, can be made to be claustrophobic if you want to go into a more errie/horror theme
Thanks :) Glad to hear that! Yes, the player will be taking stops to explore houses, or other places. Not sure about chopping trees right now, but yeah, the coal will be something the player should search in those places. I love the idea of wells actually, that solves the problem of searching wster that is not drinkable for the player, but can be used for the train! Can’t comment about the look of the train now, yet some things to be thought about before starting to design the train! Again thanks a lot for the suggestions :)
in reality the thermal flux is related to the difference in temperature, so a high temperature differential leads to a high thermal flux, also has to do with mass, so a larger volume of water will take longer to heat, assigning a constant value i think will be noticably wrong.
I dont wanna be that guy but..... this is not realistic at all ToT. The whistle doesn't release that much pressure (you'd need to hold it town for five minutes to release 10 psi), and there is no light to warn you for low boiler pressure.
@@Vav97But with a realistic-ish looking model, will that also mean that water and steam get put into the same container and their stats simply move to gauges?
@@roadtrain_ Not necessarily, the model will be close to a realistic model, but there are some things I just can't make like in a real train. For example the cabins irl are very small, and in first person there will be no space for the player to move in the cabin. The game is anyways in a fantasy genre, so I'm not worried about that :) One thing I know, it will look cool in the end
@@Vav97Well, one thing you could maybe look into is a shay style engine, which has the boiler offset. This would give you extra visibility. Of course a larger cabin would also be quite neat. You could also forego using a locomotive + tender setup and go for a bunker-style locomotive, which simply carries coal on the back. Might help with the design and stuff. Also, could take inspiration from voidtrain for train design?
I wonder how the engine will be improved along the way. Will there be salvaged parts, new random engines you can find. Maybe have cars that carry extra supplies along the way.
@@Vav97 Maybe at a certain point, you could implement from solid fuels such as wood and coal to liquid fuels such as oil. Assuming you're going to keep this game based around steam only. Then along the route, you could have risky paths with "Old rails" that would have deformities that could detail the engine if the player was moving too fast or exceeded a certain amount of tonnage. The reward could be a rare modification or a spare car full of oils or fuel to extend range.
0:33 What??? What do you mean boring??? Dude train sims are incredibly fun when theyre done right. Derail valey was a lot of learning, but man, 20-30-40 hours into it, its the best train sim game out there. The audio is incredible!!! TSW on the other hand....🤮 They dont seem to have any knowledge how to bug fix jack shit lol. Ive played 3 of their games. Theyve all been unplayable. Just make sure it works, and everyone loves a good sim! 😁
Especially if you made a train simulator survival! Dude. That would be incredible! If someone made derail valley but with survival aspects, and building on an empty flat car. 🤯🤯
@@WasatchWind i just think in a game where a steam train is the main mechanic - wasting steam on inefficient operation would Finally have real consequences instead of a lower profit margin or something like that.
With all due respect, just warning you, making any game about trains will attract the gaze of the railfan community - And so be ready for a great deal of critique on that front. Obviously any sensible person can suspend disbelief when you're obviously going for an arcadey game, not a simulator - But gosh some things are just... basic unpleasant things here. Having the firebox be behind you for some reason? A teeny wheeney boiler, also behind you? I understand this is basic programmer art right now, but again, strong warning - this right now doesn't even resemble the popular conception of a steam engine, with a large boiler, smokestack, can on the back, etc. If you're worried about visibility, perhaps have a smaller locomotive and larger windows. If that still is getting in the way, you might consider looking at "coffee pot" engines - where it's a small boiler that's upright. Again, I hope I'm not coming across as insulting. I want to help give you some positive suggestion. I can't tell you're a competent game developer - I just want to warn you in advance that people who like train games would enjoy driving something that looks more like a train.
I absolutely agree about the roasting of my "sandwich" train that it is right now :) I will make sure the final train looks dope, and is more like a usual train (with possibly many differences of course, considering it is a game). Thanks a lot for the comment!

0:33 *_Derail Valley would like to know your location_*
But yeah, as fun as Derail Valley is for me, I can understand why that'd be bad for your game.
I thought the story was going to be about the train itself but it was waaay cooler. Loved it
Thanks! Glad you liked the video :)
So exciting! I'm pumped to see how this game will progress!
Happy to hear that man! Will continue work!

Ange The Great actually made a free steam engine simulator for steam. You could get inspiration from it, since it´s very realistic.

How did you make train move uniformly along the spline. There is spline animiation option but it doesnt work with input
It’s a custom script that attaches the train to the spline. Look how the code is made in the spline animation component
