- The behind the scenes making of Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron
It showcases some amazing stunts from George Miller's movie.
Synopsis: Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth film of George Miller's Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order... There's Max, a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
To this day this movie cements the fact that The Academy need to recognise stunt work as award-worthy. Blows my mind what they did with this film
AMEN TO THAT!!!
perhaps they don't so as not to incentivize crazier and crazier stunts that lead people to be less careful and kill someone.
@@chettlar212 It's more because if they did recognize it that way, the industry as a whole would have to deal with more stunt performers demanding more for their performances. If you're just some nobody that subs in for a big name actor in a few scenes, you don't have any bargaining leverage because they can put a list of other nobodies in your place and no one will ever tell in the final movie.
They probably never will because the morality of incentivising dangerous behaviour is a bit shady.
It could lead to doing extremely dangerous stunts just to overtake one another
Who gives a fuck about what the Academy thinks. They're so out to lunch 98 percent of the time.
this movie isn't only an achievement in filmmaking, but also in engineering. Holy shit dude, this is great
John Otero I was lucky enough to play with the edit file, the amount of sound/video involved is mind boggling.
I was hoping it would talk heaps about the cars i know a guy who helped build a good quantity of them including the gigahorse (that was his proudest one) and even got to test drive the doofwagon
nathaniel sharp Nice🤟
@@nathanielsharp2615 Watch the other behind the scenes. I goes through many of the cars
@@DangerDavez thanks man I'll have a give em a geez
A movie like this will never be made again if not by George Miller. That is so sad. This movie breaks every cliche of hollywood today and I hope a lot of directors take a page out of Millers book and bring back movies like this.
There's going to be 2 more
Have you heard of a small time director named Christopher Nolan? Probably not. Anyway, he makes his movies using a lot of particle effects and real world locations.
+sina madani God I hope so
+Oscar Montez Films Well that makes two of them.
+The Labryinth Mainly because the film at its core is Australian, not Hollywood.
Guy Norris is a fucking legend. What a boss. After shattering his legs accidentally in Mad Max 2, keeping that take and making it one of the iconic stunts of that movie, going back and doing the amazing car flip himself 34 years later. What a boss
What a goddamn stud.
God they really got literally every madman they could didn't they? Motocross daredevils, circus performers, veteran stuntmen, everything. Love it.
what a movie. what a lovely movie
"I'm spinning through the air, injured, because the stunt didn't go as planned. Time to relax my body completely to try and minimize further injury."
Stuntmen are insane.
I love the contrast of Hardy and his roles. Every time I see him on behind the scenes features, he's always smiling and cheering and it seems geniuine, although 95% of his roles are psychologically fucked up or sad/tragic characters.
Apparently he was a pain in the ass during the production of this one.
Real people risking injuries or even worse, real cars with creative design, real explosions, real stunts, attention to detail, commitment, hard work, dedication by everyone to their respective craft.
And at the helm an old school director who wouldn't have it any other way, coming decades after his prime to teach modern action directors how it should be done.
Nothing but respect for everyone involved in the making of this movie. It's a dying art what they're doing, but the end result proves that, even with all the CGI in the world, some things are just irreplaceable.
@@kevCjm6dhhihiujkbbhjhvcfyhuiij There's a comma between "worse" and "real cars". Learn some grammar, kiddo.
The problem with CGI is that it has no inherent limits, which inherently leads to cheating; adding crap that isn't believable, a general laziness and cheapening, often implementation by some fresh graduate that has no practical real world reference, too much "look what I can do" rubbish.
And wasn’t even nominated for best picture in 2015… I still don’t get how.
@@kevCjm6dhhihiujkbbhjhvcfyhuiij Excuse you.
yes it was, and it won 6 Oscars@@Wydjacob
I've watched this movie at least 15 times and it hasn't lost the slightest bit of it's awesomeness.
This making of is more entertaining then the movie to me. I saw it 0,5 ttimes.
i watched it 100 times, even more, everytime noticed something new
@@mrfineeye exactly.
three years later and I still wish they had brought out the storyboard as a hardback book to enjoy more of the madness.
they might be saving some of it for the furiosa sequel
Imagine being George Miller and having this beautiful yet insane story in your mind

Usually I dont watch "behind the scenes" of good movies because I dont wanna ruin my impression. But man... everything was filmed... for REAL. No green screens, no trailed trucks, no stunts made on computer. This is why Mad Max in my top its best movies seen in last 4-5 years.
Dont care what anyone says. He deserves a Best Director nomination for this
He deserved to win. This was an achievement. Something to be studied years from now.
💯
Recently rewatched this movie. Has to be one of the best films. Never was bored. Max speaks minimally but his presence is strong. Cinematography stunts and costumes are off the wall insane. Crazy.
Holy shit. I am overwhelmed by the level of coordination, planing and communication they required to make this movie. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to film all this in the middle of nowhere. Amazing!
I know the CGI is impressive, but all my respect to the people who risk in real life to create something so great like this.
That's living life
24:21 George had just performed one of the most expensive and irreversible stunts in the movie, something that can only be done once, and has to be done correctly. He has to make sure the stunt was a success. And as its happening... he doesnt much care where the truck is landing, all he cares about is if the stunt driver is ok. THATS a good director. George at the moment only cared if the driver was ok instead of getting that perfect shot. He's a good man, a good director.
It makes my head hurt just thinking about the planning and logistics involved in making such a film. They didn't cut corners or mess about and seems like thoroughly enjoyed the process. I wish we had more filmmakers so dedicated to their vision.
I have a huge amount of respect for everyone who worked on this film. That really looks like a tough, long film shoot. But I'd say it would be an unforgettable experience for all of them. And the film itself is brilliant.
It's marvelous
Seeing through the comments and non of them mentioned "NAMIBIA"
I am so proud my country was used for such an AMAZING movie!
An amazingly unique country in the whole world. Spectacularly, where a red Namibian Desert meets the edge of the Atlantic Ocean
@@81caasi i love that....incredible view ever
Looks amazing!
such a beautiful place to film an epic like this! You can create such a rich story from a naturally stunning environment
@Albert Munkey wow really? Please when you come back, give me a call +264814436201 i will take you to alot of nice places around. Thank you for kindness compliment
SO much respect for them doing all of this for real and not with computers. Can't even describe how ridiculously much I missed watching "making of's" like these that aren't all greenscreen shots.
Don't get me wrong though; I realize CGI and all that is a great talent on it's own and one that is very impressive when mastered. I do not wish to belittle the work of great talents on that field, but yet I definitely tip my hat to actual stunts like this and it blows my mind how much effort and awesome work goes into creating stunts like this - and it surely adds to the awesomeness and my appreciation of the entire film.
It also does show up in the end result... it just has that whole real, genuine can't-quite-put-my-finger-on-it-but-it's-awesome "oomph"-factor to it.
Edit: Oh and when I said "all of this", I meant all of these stunts shown on this 'making of', that they did for real. Did not mean to say that the entire movie is actually pulled off entirely without CGI. Bad wording from my part!
Oh and what Hoult said about "getting the chills while shooting it"... oh I bet! Some of those scenes they did for real must be things that you'll surely remember the rest of your life.
Definitely scenes to "WITNESS" ;)
+Welcome to the Planet KAL-EL 80% of the movie practical effects, the other 20% is the CGI to fill in the holes. Like scenery.
+Herkko Koskinen I thought i would hate the movie. But wauw they have great respect for the franchice, i loved this movie so much. Fun times man. please make a sequel.
urduib Tom Hardy signed for three Mad Max movies, so there will surely be two more after this one.
themaniacboy Woot, that is great newz mate :) thanks for info.
The pole jumping scene gives me anxiety... those stuntmen are so metal!
It's SO COOL
So refreshing to see a movie that's not just wall to wall CGI.
I still just can’t wrap my head around how innovative this crew was to rig the stunts that they did. It’s mind blowing and also inspiring
OSCARS ... OSCARS .... LOTS OF THEM! ... PERFECT WORK, ACTING, STUNTS ... everything! Clap Clap!
I have seen this movie so many times. And each time I’m in awe of the action, the stunts and the music. Never gets old. And I’m not even an action movie fan. Thanks for this masterpiece of moviemaking.
Same here!! 😁
I stick with the original and haven't seen this version yet.
@@marcushennings9513 I have seen none of the originals.
George's master mind,
Crew's hard work,
Cast's brilliant performance,

Mad Max.
Probably the most enjoyable behind the scenes I've ever seen. Love how extensive it is, mentioning so many actors and vehicles. Gonna have to buy this one.
It is absolutely incredible that nobody died during the making of this film. True cinema at its purest this film.
One of the best movies I've ever seen.
You obviously haven't seen many have you?
I have better taste than you mate. Terminator 2 is the greatest action film ever, almost 30 years on and still regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. I highly doubt Fury Road will achieve that much respect when it reaches its 30th anniversary.
@@peterlenham6904 "better taste" "terminator 2 is the greatest action movie ever made" lmao
according to my research the greates action movies ever are
1.The matrix
2.The terminator
3.terminator 2
4.mad max fury road
5.The dark knight
@@Cinéphile9304 The Matrix is not the best action movie ever. It's the best movie who define the modern society. A generation of plugged humans.
I love how the only time CG was used was for safety reasons, the impossible, and aesthetic changes.
+Hawkeye04300 The way it should be used.
+Hawkeye04300 Yea, CGI is supposed to be a tool. not your movie... *cough* michael *cough* bay
+Colston is da name
Micheal Bay actuelly uses a lot of practical effects in his movies (well of cause the Transformers are all CGI, but as "Hawkeye04300" said, to fully animate them practically would be "impossible")
I think Michael Bay has pretty good visual effects in his movies. The real problem is the chaotic film shooting of the action scenes where you don't know what to hell is happening. And of course, his shitty scripts.
@@cili4231 Michael Bay is a bad example. He uses practical effects like a motherfucker. Its just he makes everything explode.
That double rig flip is one of the most beautiful images in cinema.
Nonstop action, great plot, great directing, minimum CGI , an amazing soundtrack and superb acting by the entire cast= Best action movie I’ve seen in decades.
Except it's non minimum CGI. In fact every single shot in the movie includes CGI. All cars are CGI. Stunts filmed with real cars and actors, but then replaced with CGI cars. It's just really well made.
Has to be THE MOST EPIC car stunt scenes ever captured on film..... CRAZY ASS stunt work all across the board !!!
I love how he hired as many Australian cast and crew as he could.
@Marblez3
Too bad Mel Gibson wasn't in it.
@@blainwilson7937 Didn't need a old man with rocks in his head
I'm not saying he likes or not Australians, but one of the reasons he could've done that is because a movie to be labeled as "Australian production/co-production" the goverement requires specific amount of local work force to be hired, and (normally) there should be some Australian landmark (which are none of in this moive). And yeah that is kinda "tax-inavasionee" from Australia's gross ;) (movies ARE art, but money is money)
The movie was made by Australians. Nothing to do with Hollywood
That was what made Mad Max and Road Warrior so otherworldly to myself and my friends. They were half the budget and twice as cool as what the U.S. was producing at the time. ( Think Cannonball Run ) I knew somehow that these characters didnt talk like me.
Aside from the incredible stunts, acting, cinematography, practical and CG effects, the color grading on this film is absolutely beautiful!
The guitarist idea is 100% Respect.
These people are crazy, this movie is mental.
The Mad Max movies RULE!!!
For me it has to be somewhere in the top 5 action movies ever made. I don't even know where to begin praising it. Every second of it was a pure joy to watch.
I haven't seen this level of intense stunts in my entire life ! Absolutely mind blowing !
The whole time I was like "holy cow", "oh wow", "omg", "ohh man", especially in the scene of the musical truck crashing into the war rig! That was endlessly awesome!!! My full credits and salutations to the whole crew of this film!!!
Every single aspect of this movie is a beautiful work of art, the practical effects being the headliner. It's so refreshing to see behind the scenes footage that isn't just an hour of "our graphics guys really know their stuff"
I couldn't believe that all that was done FOR REAL until I saw this film. Amazing! My favorite action film from now on!
The film editors deserved an Oscar. Thousands of scenes all combined to make the best action movie ever made. Brilliantly done.
Greatest epic action film of all time. We NEED a sequel.
Being an older viewer I am just amazed at the dynamics and the physicality of this movie. Old Hollywood must be in awe of these stunt men/women. Gritty, visceral and almost ballet-ish in the presentation. Seeing this on the big screen was just mind blowing. I loved the original Mad Mad trilogies...but this was just stellar. Kudos to ALL involved in this film. Awards are needed for all this controlled madness.
Hands down the best action movie I have ever seen. It will be awhile before we see something like this again.
I hope never. I rahter watch a Jackie Chan movie then ever this plotless overrated Trash.
I'm always weary when they revive an old movie series. I watched this only a few months back and I was blown away with how great it was, Tom Hardy was a great choice and seeing the way they filmed it just made me appreciate it even more.
I hope they make a part 2 in the future. I love this movie.
A big cheer to all the great stuntmen in the history of cinema..so nice that in this "behind the scenes" they give him the attention they deserve..
ONE of my fav movies of ALL time,...Australians are amazing cinematic people...
This is a peak of human movie history.
Mad max stunt drivers are among the best in the world. From the 1st movie to this one. All of it...
Whatever anyone says about this movie I thought it was thoroughly engaging and visually stunning! Kudos to all the production crew and stunt people.
Classic movie, so many real stunts in this movie, just incredible at times, people need to watch it now!!
I'm so hyped for the next movie, I just hope it will be as epic and iconic as this one.
easily in my top 10 list of movies.. greatest action film of all time
Fury Road and Terminator 2 are the greatest action films ever made. There's just 0 debate, they're perfect from start to finish.
I have watched this movie 30 times...and it still feels new to me...😍😍😍
Maybe just an attempt to find anything good about the movie, like an good story for example-
@@migalorsdarwin1930 It was made for ppl with higher IQ levels..if you hate.. then you're fucking dumb. The stunts were real..the cars were real..the explotions were real..gr8t strory too.. Fuck Off!!
One of my favorite movies. I hope they make Mad Max: The Wasteland
I thought the Movie is amazing, but now I've seen how it was put together has put it on another level.... Fantastically Epic
one of the best movies i have ever watched!
"what a film, what a lovely film!"
Massive respect for these guys and George Miller because this is not easy to do. In an age more and more blockbusters feel more "made by committee" and are risk averse, this movie is prime example of trust in the vision of the filmmaker should ALWAYS take priority! Everyone else's job is just to help! Fantastic movie! A new cinematic classic!!
There should really be an Emmy Award for best stuntmen... Holy shit these guys deserved it!
Imagine being a Namibian wandering in the desert, enjoying the silence surrounding you... and then you hear the roar of 200 cars and some sick guitar riffs approaching you.
Best action movie of the century
This movie is a Master Piece.
SUPERB FILM!I loved Mad Max - Thank you George Miller.I have watched Mad Max over & over - I never get bored of it. I can't wait to see part 2 & Tom Hardy again.
one of the most amazing movies ever!! I never tire of watching it. The stunts are INCREDIBLE!! Bravo to the entire cast and crew
Wow, this guys really know what they're doing :) Fantastic.

Hands down my favorite action movie of all time! So insanely badass! Hats off to those who made it possible I thank you
This movie is a visual feast.. i watched it many times
Wow! I hope to be a part of this movie and movies like these in the future! It's truly a beautiful masterpiece. I saw it twice in movie theaters when it came out and cried every time, including now whenever I see it within the comfort of my own home. I may not remember a lot of movies and directors, even though it's all filmmakers talk about but I'll always remember the kind of movies you make George miller. You really give your whole life to these movies, and those are the kind of people I look forward to working with. Hats off to Margaret Sixel for always fulfilling the editors position.
the amount of time, effort , Engineering , science and money spent on this is immense !! Miller u beauty there can never be MAD MAX better than this !! RESPECT TO THE WHOLE CREW !! the one movie which i will always regret missing in theaters !!
What an incredible film, and a huge victory for physical stunts vs. CGI. I'm very excited about this
New behind the scenes footage shows that all cars in the movie are in fact CGI cars. They built some of those cars practically and filmed with real cars, with real crashes, but were then fully replaced with CGI cars and crashes. Even the "people" falling off the cars, 100% CGI. First you film it practically, and then you replace it with CGI. This way you get a perfect reference for physics, animation, light and interaction with actors. This movie is simply a perfect example of invisible CGI. The reason they say "No CGI", is for advertising purposes. A movie simply sells better when people hear that it's all practically filmed without CGI, even though it's a full on lie.
Honestly the post digital effects deserve just as much praise. This film is a fine example of perfection combination of real life practical effects and digital effects combined. This is how it should be done, using the very best of both worlds :)
The way Tom Hardy says "scaary!" heheheheh. GOD THIS IS BEST MOVIE GAHHHH
This movie ...to me...one of the best movies ever...done without any foul language to speak of....one of my top 10...or top 5 ever...I've watched it..sooo many times....ready for the next one Mr.Miller plz....
Other movies:...lotsa cg
FURY ROAD....cg...whats that.
I have know that the war rig roll and the Doof wagon smashing into it was done for real..
but MAN .. that shot at 300fps looks just so perfect.. is right like in the movie.. they barelly needed to add the guitar and the wheel (wich were real shot in chroma key not CGI)..
Its funny how so much people said the crash and other stuff were CGI.. they dont know crap
+sparrowlt Fun fact the War Rig and Doof wagon crash were filmed at Penrith Lakes, about 25 minutes from where I live! I wish I saw them film it!
+Matt Dollin how is that a fun fact? Nobody gives a fuck about where you live

I dunno I found it both fun and informative. where as internet douches are a dime a dozen
god this movie was awesome! Cant think of another movie where the behind the scenes clips make me almost as excited as the movie did.
A graphic novel brought to life, flawlessly.
By far,the best action movie EVER!.. amazing job to all who were involved in this movie!!

AWESOME! Mad respect for the stun men, women and actors! Film crew as well and everyone else involved in production! Awesome move! I'll be getting it on blu ray.
what a fucking movie... im so thankful i was alive to see a mad max of my generation... my dad would go on about how the older mad maxes were the greatest movies he'd ever seen - the bugger took my mom (that time his girlfriend) to see the first one as a date. And now I get to pass on a film to my kids when the time comes. PS: Don't worry my dad's still around :D
Just rewatch it yesterday, and this pop up on my reccomendation. Now i want to watch it again ffs. This masterpiece need a sequel or prequel.
I loved this movie and now after seeing the amazing talent of the engineers, stunt people and coordinators I love it even more! George Miller is a creative genius!
George Miller will go down in the history books as one of the greatest visionary directors of all time. Kudos to this brilliant man and everything he brought to film. Watching this behind the scenes short was almost on par with Fury Road. Amazing to see all the talent that went behind this monumental movie and the badass stuff they pulled off.
This movie is the reason I appreciate film.
Lol. Tom "it was scary" Hardy.
+one2gaming LMAO, I still love that guy
+one2gaming Tom Hardly in the movie (quoting honest trailers)
+one2gaming That was hilarious ;D Love the honesty.
Put wonderful Tom Hardy in a movie and have his face covered thru almost all of it and give him almost NO lines to say. What a waste! I think George [Miller] has a crush on Charlize Theron and made this entire film so he would have a reason to hang out with her. PLUS, this is one of the worst 'making of' docs I've ever seen. Bor-rrrrring!. Cars, trucks, cars trucks, cars, trucks, cars, trucks, cars, tru ... well. you get the idea.
Laura-Lee Rahn well....i thought it was great
EASILY!!! ONE of MY FAVORITE movies of ALL time!!
Thats a hell of a lot of fucking work to get the stunts done for the shoots and for Miller to actually get his vision realized with all the people helping coordinate for the shooting of the film is insane. He captured exactly what he wants to see and thats a pretty in filming on such a massive scale.
I'm glad I own this movie never gets old every time I watch it.
