It would be hard to take Will Smith seriously in a movie like Matrix given most people see him as a comedian from the Fresh Prince. A loner computer geek questioning the meaning of life is a bit hard to imagine for someone who was "born and raised in West Philadelphia"
I agree. Although he is currently the John Wick of our current generation of action movies, you can't have better actor playing Neo as Keanu Reeves. Hollywood kept doing remakes and reboots because they're run out of creative ideas and film concept.
Same here. I think a lot people who were exposed to Lawrence Fishburne the 1st time saw him playing Morpheus. Even the name Morpheus is so memorable that I think the 1st people they think of whenever they hear the name is Lawrence

Interesting on how this video focuses on how groundbreaking the cinematography and special effects are but doesn’t really touch on how groundbreaking it was to take such a subversive concept and make it palatable for the masses.
You could argue the Wachowskis failed at that, because their vision was undermined by the executives. Originally, the enslaved humans were meant to serve as processing power for the machines, which goes some way to explaining why they would expend resources to keep them around. The execs thought audiences wouldn't understand that, so the purpose of the slaves was changed to energy generation. This makes no sense at all, as the only energy input to the slaves is their ancestors' remains, so conservation of energy would have to be violated to sustain the slaves, never mind generate additional useful energy.

Most heights make me feel nauseous actually. So hats off to them for doing that. Crazy bastards!
This is the best film ever. I've never been a fan of cyberpunk or sci-fi but this movie simply blew my mind. Every phrase. Every Camera Angle. Every action is just brilliantly thought out by the Wachowskis. No other film has so much coolness in such a short space of time. It epitomised the 90s and was the last proper action film before the millennium where everything became a CGI fest. The philosophical approach combined with tons of insane action shots is simply perfection. Rightly so did Keanu donate 75 of his 80 million dollar salary from the trilogy to the film crew because they deserve so much credit. I was only 2 when this film was released, I really wish I could have been a bit older to absorb the hype that surrounded this film. There is something truly unique about this film; maybe it was the inclusion of kung fu that was never seen before. Whatever it was, the Wachowskis knew exactly what they wanted.
When it came out, there was a big mystery surrounding it. They kept saying "If you want to know what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself." I was working at a record store and a guy came in the store one night selling a bunch of different bootleg movie vhs tapes. I bought the Matrix. When I played it at my apartment, It wasn't a good quality tape, but the low quality of the bootleg, somehow made the movie that more mysterious and cool. It's hard to explain. Lol
Together with Back to the Future, this is my most favorite movie of all time. I must have seen this at least 25 times and each time it's still good. I was mindblown, the first time I saw this. The doc. focuses on the innovative camerawork, stunts and special effects, but for me The Matrix is all about the concept and the way it is brought to the audience. And if I'm really honest, this movie plays a big part in my own search for freedom in life. The question: "who am I without my thoughts and concepts?" is directly connected with this movie. For that matter, it's more than just a movie. It's also a genuine piece of art that makes you see yourself and life in a different way. Thnx for this documentary!
23:20 I always thought that glass was completely CGI. I wish they had gone into detail about this scene a bit more, but it sounds like it was real glass after all. 20 years and this movie continues to impress me.
Matrix is mindblowing then and still my favorite sci-fi movie for all-time. The metaphors, visual effects, story was an eyeopener & an allegory of real events happening in the world around us now. Wake Up People! Our lives weren't so free after all.... "de-ja-vu"
The matrix has a little from ghost in the shell, akira and ninja scroll in my opinion, Matrix do something that change the way we see movies, was great to see this film in the cinema in 1999 ,a Anime come to real life , nobody done before, instant classic and great soundtrack,
Exactly. I went into the theatre not actually knowing what the matrix was. When Neo is trying to find out what it is we're just a curious as he is. These days even if you try to avoid spoilers, the trailer itself will spoil it for you.
Keanu Reeves as Neo: A computer programmer, born Thomas A. Anderson, who secretly operates as a hacker named Neo. Reeves described his character as someone who felt that something was wrong, and was searching for Morpheus and the truth to break free. Will Smith turned down the role of Neo to make Wild Wild West, because of skepticism over the film's ambitious bullet time special effects. He later stated he was "not mature enough as an actor" at that time, and that if given the role, he "would have messed it up". Smith praised Reeves for his portrayal. Nicolas Cage also turned down the part because of "family obligations". Warner Bros. sought Brad Pitt or Val Kilmer for the role. When both declined, Leonardo DiCaprio initially accepted the role, but ultimately turned it down because he did not want to do a visual effects film directly after Titanic. The studio pushed for Reeves, who won the role over Johnny Depp, the Wachowskis' first choice. Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that the screenplay was also sent to Sandra Bullock, with the suggestion of rewriting Neo as a female Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus: A human freed from the Matrix and captain of the Nebuchadnezzar. Fishburne stated that once he read the script, he did not understand why other people found it confusing. However, he doubted if the movie would ever be made, because it was "so smart". The Wachowskis instructed Fishburne to base his performance on the character Morpheus in Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics. Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Val Kilmer were also considered for the part. Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity: A human freed by Morpheus, a crewmember of the Nebuchadnezzar, and later Neo's romantic interest. After reading the script, Moss stated that at first, she did not believe she had to do the extreme acrobatic actions as described in the script. She also doubted how the Wachowskis would get to direct a movie with a budget so large, but after spending an hour with them going through the storyboard, she understood why some people would trust them. Moss mentioned that she underwent a three-hour physical test during casting, so she knew what to expect subsequently. The role made Moss, who later said, "I had no career before. None." Janet Jackson was initially approached for the role but scheduling conflicts prevented her from accepting it. In an interview, she stated that turning down the role was difficult for her, so she later referenced The Matrix in the 'Intro' and 'Outro' interludes on her tenth studio album Discipline. Sandra Bullock, who was previously approached for the role of Neo, was also offered the role of Trinity, but she turned it down. Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek and Jada Pinkett Smith (who would later play Niobe in the sequels) auditioned for the role. Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith: A sentient "Agent" program of the Matrix whose purpose is to destroy Zion and stop humans from getting out of the Matrix. Unlike other Agents, he has ambitions to free himself from his duties. Weaving stated that he found the character amusing and enjoyable to play. He developed a neutral accent but with more specific character for the role. He wanted Smith to sound neither robotic nor human, and also said that the Wachowskis' voices had influenced his voice in the film. When filming began, Weaving mentioned that he was excited to be a part of something that would extend him. Jean Reno was offered the role, but declined, unwilling to move to Australia for the production. Joe Pantoliano as Cypher: Another human freed by Morpheus, and a crewmember of the Nebuchadnezzar, but one who regrets taking the red pill and seeks to be returned to the Matrix, later betraying the rebels to Agent Smith. Pantoliano had worked with the Wachowskis prior to appearing in The Matrix, starring in their 1996 film Bound. Marcus Chong as Tank: The "operator" of the Nebuchadnezzar and Dozer's brother; they are both "natural" (as opposed to bred) humans, born outside of the Matrix. Anthony Ray Parker as Dozer: Pilot of the Nebuchadnezzar. He is Tank's brother, and like him was born outside of the Matrix. Julian Arahanga as Apoc: A freed human and a crew member on the Nebuchadnezzar. Matt Doran as Mouse: A freed human and a programmer on the Nebuchadnezzar. Gloria Foster as The Oracle: A prophet who still resides in the Matrix, helping the freed humans with her foresight and wisdom. Belinda McClory as Switch: A human freed by Morpheus, and a crew member of the Nebuchadnezzar. Paul Goddard as Agent Brown: One of two sentient "Agent" programs in the Matrix, who works with Agent Smith to destroy Zion and stop humans from escaping the system. Robert Taylor as Agent Jones: One of two sentient "Agent" programs in the Matrix who works with Agent Smith to destroy Zion and stop humans from escaping the system.
+Andrew Rayner You put it right. The Matrix is fucking timeless. It is, without a doubt, the film classic of its generation ("X"), and a total metaphor for what is happening in society today. Incidentally, the best film role for Keanu Reeves, ever.
I have it on the trilogy bluerays, I don't know if there is a way to see it somewhere else (DVD's ?). There is around 2-3h of making-of on each disk, sorted by scenes if I remember right, and it is very, very interesting !
+crapObear2323 No course Im not bullshitting - LOL - why would I BS about that. If I was going to BS I would say Im Hugo Weaving or Keannu Reeves and go all the way ! Anyway yeah had a great time and did meet Keanu Reeves and Hugo Weaving. Keanu came up to me and asked me and a girl I was working with if Id like to go down in the lifts with him after the days shooting. When we came out there were all these paparazzi around us and I was walking out with Keannu. Was an awesome experience.
Hgo Weaving has made himself eternal as THE agent Smith. I think almost everybody would instantly recognize him. So If I was him, I would have some fun every now and then, dressing up with the black suit and the black glasses, put on a serious face and walk the streets. When somebody talks to me or gets into fan-mode, just giving them a short emotionless look and go on walking, like being the actual agent Smith. And when they are kinda upset about me sort of ignoring them, few steps later just turning around with a smile, that could still be agent Smith. =D You know, Arnie did such things in the whole Terminator-attire. I think, those are the fun sides of being a well known actor.
One of thr best lines. Smith, "...you help your neighbor take our her GARBAGE...' The way he says that line is absolutely amazing, like taking out the garbage for someone is something only the lowest most treasonous inhuman scum would do!
This movie needed absolute buy in from the actors and the responses from fishburne and reeves in this video just absolutely confirms that these actors were the right choice for the film
What blows my mind are those scatches, every single key frame catched in them, with such detail, or those machines, Nabukatnesar ship interior, like you have to be not only phenomenal drawer, but also have quite and big understanding in technology aspect, what to put there, how it suppose to look, all those instruments, cables mechanismus, like one think is to be able draw just from understanding of perception objects that you know, and whole other think create design of ship in such detail.. this movie is almost perfect, only think that could be better is wire work, as those jumps are very unnatural, even if you jump ridiculously high it can be done on correct trajectory because some of those are so out… but whatever, what a masterpiece
The Matrix created a special experience at the Cinema that effectively foreshadowed the dangers of this Technology obsessed age to make it a Masterpiece of vision, style, creativity that gave the voices of Anarchy a triumph and helped paved the way for Wikipedia and Wikileaks to give meaning and truth for all in the 21st Century. A film that brings the triumph of the human spirit, power, context, hope, beauty and reality the way that Chariots of Fire inspires human values for all. Keanu Reeves has never met a role he could not master without aplomb and legendary moves that define action, adventure and capacity to bring exhilarating truths for all. Epic and Extraordinary for anyone who saw it when it came out and enjoyed the experience of being alive.
Does anyone know the origin of the first music track that is played in this? I searched up the entire OST of about over 100 tracks, and did not find it. It's quite the obscure track and has been a real trouble to hunt down for.
If you buy the original 'The Matrix Revisted' documentary, there's a menu where you can listen to a whole bunch of music they used in these docs back then.
+arrondennis01 The tracks from "The Matrix Revisited" are already included in the blu-ray version of "The Matrix" movie. The background music from "Making The Matrix" are not included, unfortunately.
Imagine if you were an actor that did nothing but these groundbreaking movies where you have to train for months and months in some particular craft. You'd literally have the opportunity to learn very rare and unique things. Keanu def comes to mind when thinking about this type of acting career.

Most heights make me feel nauseous actually. So hats off to them for doing that. Crazy bastards!
Back when directors had balls to make awesome original movies.
See what I did here? Ok, I'll see myself out.
Can’t like this comment enough!
I think more so studios were willing to take risks.
@@f8talfury Wooosh
@@Druffmaul damn! How did I miss that one 😂😂😂
YOOOO CHILL LMAO 🤣😂
Whatever it was, the Wachowskis knew exactly what they wanted.
this is best post apocalyptic cyberpunk film
When it came out, there was a big mystery surrounding it. They kept saying "If you want to know what the Matrix is, you have to see it for yourself." I was working at a record store and a guy came in the store one night selling a bunch of different bootleg movie vhs tapes. I bought the Matrix. When I played it at my apartment, It wasn't a good quality tape, but the low quality of the bootleg, somehow made the movie that more mysterious and cool. It's hard to explain. Lol
Very well said. I still remember the day I left the movie theatre and couldn’t believe what I just saw
Thank you so much for uploading this!
A milestone in the history of movie making. Its significance is unquestionable.
When Carrie Anne called the Wachowskis just normal guys...awkward
😂😂😂
23:20 I always thought that glass was completely CGI. I wish they had gone into detail about this scene a bit more, but it sounds like it was real glass after all. 20 years and this movie continues to impress me.
You can learn more about the glass here (I saw this not too long ago): ua-cam.com/video/oKt-Jz_s9DE/v-deo.html
Matrix is my all time favorite film. This somehow made it even better
The animation they talk about is "Ghost in the Shell" I believe.
7:49 What is this music name? I never find this god dame music! 😢
Matrix is mindblowing then and still my favorite sci-fi movie for all-time. The metaphors, visual effects, story was an eyeopener & an allegory of real events happening in the world around us now. Wake Up People! Our lives weren't so free after all.... "de-ja-vu"
and to think these visionaries went bat shit crazy years later...
Matrix is such a great movie. I remember watching this as a 9y/o. Watching it today and Im still in love. Its just amazing
One of the best movie I ever saw.
And now we know why The Matrix was a once in a decade masterpiece and Matrix 4 was a piece of shit.
Inside of the Matrix: Andy and Larry. Outside of the Matrix: Lilly and Lana.
3:50 what's the name of the song?
Crazy when you see these brothers become sisters
At the same time?
Watching this and shaking my head thinking about matrix 4... Ugh
2:15 this scene with them in the alley… is in the film?
Question: if the first cast choices were Will Smith and Val Kilmer, why are Neo white and Morpheus black in the storyboards?
The matrix has a little from ghost in the shell, akira and ninja scroll in my opinion, Matrix do something that change the way we see movies, was great to see this film in the cinema in 1999 ,a Anime come to real life , nobody done before, instant classic and great soundtrack,
The Wachowskis were huge japanime fans and wanted to bring that action to a live action event.
I'm also thinking some Serial Experiment Lain
9:20 to 9:28 Best thing ever.
Probably the last film that everyone went in knowing fuck all about it and it was awesome.
Exactly. I went into the theatre not actually knowing what the matrix was. When Neo is trying to find out what it is we're just a curious as he is. These days even if you try to avoid spoilers, the trailer itself will spoil it for you.
great action movie. even after 25 years, _The Matrix_ still blow my mind. thanks god i've buy and collected this movie.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that the screenplay was also sent to Sandra Bullock, with the suggestion of rewriting Neo as a female
Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus: A human freed from the Matrix and captain of the Nebuchadnezzar.
Robert Taylor as Agent Jones: One of two sentient "Agent" programs in the Matrix who works with Agent Smith to destroy Zion and stop humans from escaping the system.
this is the best film ever made hands down
Ive never seen such scenes shot, its an amazing spectacle .Wow
16:07 is that Tiger Hu Chen?
Yes he is. He also is in Matrix Reloaded in Chateau Fight.
THIS MOVIE WAS RELEASED IN 1999,BUT IS SUPERIOR TO MANY ACTION FILMS TODAY
Did you know that Keanu and his sister and mother lived in Sydney for a few years before they moved to Los Angeles California.
the gopher in Caddyshack was awesome special effects
lol greatest comment ever
SoCal Dazed for real
+Andrew Rayner
You put it right. The Matrix is fucking timeless. It is, without a doubt, the film classic of its generation ("X"), and a total metaphor for what is happening in society today. Incidentally, the best film role for Keanu Reeves, ever.
5:20 microphone bottom of screen. Just sayin.
wow I'm so happy to see this! The Matrix Trilogy was one of its kind!!
I wish ‘making of’ videos included more off-camera footage shot during production. They used to be more interesting. This one is a welcome exception.
The complete making of is around 6 hours long ! (of the whole trilogy).
I have it on the trilogy bluerays, I don't know if there is a way to see it somewhere else (DVD's ?). There is around 2-3h of making-of on each disk, sorted by scenes if I remember right, and it is very, very interesting !
+TURST67 shit, man what are you waiting for to upload them here
Still one of the best movies of all time
And wasn't expecting 20:05 from half life 2
I was an Extra on that at 7:28
+Alfa Won Which guy were you specifically?
+crapObear2323 Im the guy next to the pillar with a newspaper on my arm
+Alfa Won If you aren't bullshitting I must say that's awesome! did you get to talk to keanu or any of the main cast?
+crapObear2323 No course Im not bullshitting - LOL - why would I BS about that. If I was going to BS I would say Im Hugo Weaving or Keannu Reeves and go all the way ! Anyway yeah had a great time and did meet Keanu Reeves and Hugo Weaving. Keanu came up to me and asked me and a girl I was working with if Id like to go down in the lifts with him after the days shooting. When we came out there were all these paparazzi around us and I was walking out with Keannu. Was an awesome experience.
+Alfa Won dude thats amazing!, you were really lucky :)
Thanks. Still a great movie that I keep going back too and very few movies ever make me do that.
2021 MATRIXSQUAD YOU HERE? 2 months to go before movie will come out!
How did it come down to the Catrix shit. Why!?
Smith, "...you help your neighbor take our her GARBAGE...'
The way he says that line is absolutely amazing, like taking out the garbage for someone is something only the lowest most treasonous inhuman scum would do!
I love Will Smith, but I just don't see him as Neo. At all.
It was the best movie 22 years before. Now still best movie.
this movie is really in the top of the movie industry pyramid
i love how he went back and made a movie with the ppl who helped him make that movie
Thanks a lot for the video, man
I love the matrix movies. Favourite trilogy of all time, and I can't wait for the matrix resurrection. ❤️
Yuen Wo Ping said .... I don't want to do it.
Then he read the script , and said yes ! ;)
Carrie's remarks about the W brothers really didnt age well lol.
Who would have thought they would both be the wachowski sisters at this point in time tho?
@@DakinRinone well, they were busting their balls doing the trilogy...
2:58 Adam Eget's favorite question
I watched this making of on DVD countless times back in the day.
This movie needed absolute buy in from the actors and the responses from fishburne and reeves in this video just absolutely confirms that these actors were the right choice for the film
this was one of the last science-fiction movies of the 20th century, and one of the best ever
A great film, and a special truth for all. Respect for the time it was made.
9:00 they are real guys? well that didnt last eh...
In fact the whole cast was blessed working with Woo Ping.
Looking at the concept art for this movie, makes you wonder how different it would be if it was only a comic series.
Where can I see that Comic of Matrix?
looks awesome!
Does anyone know the origin of the first music track that is played in this? I searched up the entire OST of about over 100 tracks, and did not find it. It's quite the obscure track and has been a real trouble to hunt down for.
The bullet time effects wasn't used now days.
At 02:00-01:40, does anybody know the name and the title of the background music? It's been impossible for me to find it.
If you mean as in 00:00 to 01:40 (not 02:00) then I don't know, but I would really like to know too.
Markey Jester Yes, I actually meant at 00:00 to 01:40 (my bad).
WHAT THREW ME OFF WAS HUGO WEAVING VOICE
A revolutionary film with action sequences and world building that I feel has yet to truly be challenged.
Imagine if you were an actor that did nothing but these groundbreaking movies where you have to train for months and months in some particular craft. You'd literally have the opportunity to learn very rare and unique things. Keanu def comes to mind when thinking about this type of acting career.
3:50 Still looking for this track...
Meorphus, Neo and Agent Smith r my FAVOURITE characters
Matrix has comics or animation series?
Tanks for up this video ..
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍
1:27 yes they included my favorite hit in the whole movie
2019 Captain Marvel: I'm liek the first female hero ever. So glad women are finally strong characters.
1999 Trinity: Am I a joke to you?
2019 Marvel: We need more women directing movies!
1999 Wachowskis: 🥚🥚
