i love love LOVE your geeky explications! theyre so in depth and thorough that pretty much no questions are left unanswered. and the presentation is flawless. i can listen to you 2 nerdy birds all day
Glad to see my favorite dastardly duo at it again! This topic has always been quite interesting to me, and I can't wait to sift through your thoughts. I know they'll be insightful.
Can we talk about how badass Dunk was? He was easily in his late 60s and was still strong enough to save a bunch of people. Also, if Rhaella went into labor during the fire, then it would make sense for Dunk to get her and then a maester first. She, has a rather urgent problem, and the maester because Rhaella would need someone to through the birth.
I've recently acquired the treasure trove of knowledge, World of Ice and Fire, along with the first two Dunk and Egg novellas, in graphic novel 'form'. Amazing Only now fortuitously reading of Daeron 2' and Summerhall. The recommendations just for the Dragon armour alone is majestic, and a very Robert like antecedant Lyonel Baratheon's trademark laugh and disdain for others ornamentation is epic. Thanks to Game of Thrones and Asoiaf, it seems partially, I've an appreciation like on a DC/Marvel's scale, nominating Batman and Superman over Scarlet Witch and Sauron. ''Not learning from history, being doomed to repeat it'' is truly evident in Westeros. I'll cut short my review as I can't wait to hear HW's
Secure parchment paper over a bent coat hanger and you have a makeshift diffuser! Set it up in front of the led and it'll really make a difference. Great episode, thanks!
Discussion about The Ghost Of High Heart around 38:25? Her Wiki of Ice and Fire entry has the full quote from Storm of Swords. That supports the theory that she was a more accurate seer than most. The quote there also suggests that Balon Greyjoy was killed by a Faceless Man.
Gah! I just love you guys! Your passion and intelligence are super sexy! And even as helpful the other ASOIAF UA-cam videos are that are shorter, quick blasts of information you guys are my go to for in depth discussions that I can listen to while cooking, folding laundry or (don't tell on me) even at work. I think the cause of failure most consistent with Egg's personality as we know it this far was that he screwed up in some tragic way that was nonetheless noble. Imagine him knowing that the successful ritual would involve him sacrificing someone he loved, or heck any human, in the flames. And holding back. Say he sacrificed an animal instead. Anyways the point being that maybe the failure was something that has more thematic significance than "oops we accidentally ripped a pot over". My favorite guess (and yes it's a complete guess): Summerhall *wasn't* a failure. Dragons were born. Multiple dragons. And they weren't ready for it - not ready to deal with real live dragons. And somehow the mere birth of the dragons before they all died in the wildfire set in place the sequence of events that resulted in the Others gathering their strength (which I could imagine taking years) and ultimately - and *directly* - to the start of the current story. I would love to see Summerhall tied in.
Great show guys, My favourite part was the possibility of Dunk's dream foreshadowing Egg's death, the alignment of the Summerhall causalities with the burning ships on the Blackwater and I can't get enough of insights on the woods witch. I have enjoyed the inclusion of expert guests on your recent shows however I feel strongly that Steve is not a correct fit for the caliber of your current programming. Looking forward to your future shows!
Maybe, oh, what's the Maester in ADoD that told Sam that the the Maester's were responsible for the death of the rest of the dragons, which has been confusing to some of us, is talking about Summerhall when he tells it and maybe that the Maesters are behind it...Hopefully, we will all now soon.
I know I'm way late to the party, but I want to point out that it's never explicitly said that Dunk died at Summerhall. It's possible, probably even probable, but never actually said by anyone anywhere.
First, and most important, I absolutely love Ashaya's shirt. The dragon from the world book is just beautiful (that's where the orange dragon came from, right?) So, are you doing parte 2 about Aegon V or will there be something else about Summerhall? It would be nice if you talked about how it ties into more recent events (if it does)
Quote of the show, "Its all fun and happy... but their all going to die." I like that you mentioned how out of the way George has gone to make it clear there is mystery around the tragedy of Summerhall, Kind of like the mystery of what happened to Valyria and what happened at Hardhome. 300 years before conquest, the men of the Night's Watch see the light of the fire from the wall. "The homes of the inhabitants of Hardhome were said to have burned with flames so high and hot that the watchers on the Wall far to the south thought that the sun was rising in from the north. Afterwards, ashes rained down on the haunted forest and the Shivering Sea alike for almost half a year." 200 years later the doom came to Valyria. Braavos then reveals itself. 259 ac we have the tragedy of Summerhall. Total time separation of 559 years. I tend to think with how much time and effort George put into the map that the geology of Planetos can't be too much different than ours. This to me means that the Stepstones and Skagos are probably the results of underwater volcanoes. This would explain the Red mountains on the coast as a result of subduction like the pacific coast mountains. Point im trying to get at is that all the areas where events like this happen involve volcanoes directly or they are areas volcanoes probably exist or existed. Winterfell may be above an active location similar to Yellowstone, the god's eye lake is probably the filled in mouth of a volcano (crater lake photo: www.clickstay.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/crater-lake-wikipedia.org_.jpg ) When fire magic is being attempted it would make sense that volcanos may amplify the power, also Targs seem to be zeroed in on settling areas with volcanos. To me Summerhall was an attempt to use magic to hatch dragons, (obviously none of them read whatever Maester Marwyn had), that went wrong because... George doesn't want us to know yet, but I bet it was treachery, and my own slightly out there theory is the Braavos conspiracy. Maybe Braavos is responsible for all three of these events, Hardhome being a test run for taking down Valyria, then the attempt to destroy the entire Targ line at once when they were trying again to hatch dragons. Out there, but I think Braavos is a much bigger player than given credit for, and plus just fun to think about.
jfw091 it's definitely fun to consider all the people who might have wanted to take this opportunity to take down the Targs. So many in one place, in a somewhat defenseless place... That might be hard to pass up. Thanks for info on craters and volcanoes, that's useful... and WOW that image is beautiful. We definitely agree about the potential of volcanic activity below Winterfell. The God's Eye could be similar, we've actually never considered that. Good idea.
***** Even before this video I've thought that the maester's had a hand in keeping the targs from "birthing" new dragons. I mean they basically got rid of them via genetic diluting
Here's some feedback from a diehard fan of yours, if you can slow down a couple of notches in your speech that would be great. Especially in the podcasts. Your content is so rich and exciting, it would be even better if you can speak slowly so we the Watchners can can take it in without the rush of catching up. (I understand that you have so much to talk in a limited while, just don't belittle your exhaustive research by making it sound like a chore). Keep up the great work, I always shop from Amazon using your referral.
Great topic and welcome back - I was afraid Season 5 had killed your motivations. I've always been exceedingly curious about the whole Summerhall mystery and I can't help but think there's more to it than meets the eye since GRRM has been at the Dunk & Egg series for quite a while, is now reissuing the ones he's done and is always talking about doing more - it just doesn't make sense to telegraph the tragic ending - at least from the point of view of wanting to sell books (something he's obviously quite skilled at). Did anybody ever see Dunk's body? Maybe tales of his death were greatly exaggerated by the unreliable narrators of history? 00:22:45 - verry interesting ... seems like Daenerys might be cut of some of the same moral cloth as King Egg V ... his populist reforms, her freeing of slaves, etc. - and each at least attempted to hatch dragon eggs. Maybe Elizabeth Warren needs to hatch a few dragons if she's going to bring back Glass-Steagall. You should change your names to Azor and Ahaya
Westeros History WRT Telltale GoT gameplay: Yes, I think you guys should stick to what you do best. For those interested in gameplay, I would recommend checking the channel of Phil TheIssuesGuy. He has recently posted a playthrough of Episode 5: Nest Of Vipers. He also does an awesome radio-style post-episode live show during the GoT season.
Kevin Moore There maybe a clue in the sworn sword that may hint at egg having the same reaction to fire as danny, when dunk gets in a bath that egg made to hot and it makes him wince and he has to grit his teeth so he didn't scream and make egg laugh but he then says egg likes his much hotter
A word about technical issues - more light means you will get quite a bit more hot from it - which means sitting there for a long time will become more difficult. Diffusion sheets is a great idea, assuming that you can find clear ones.for general things - but you can use coloured ones for one or two of the LED lights if you want to set a particular mood - you could even use primary coloured diffusion sheets to "create" white light, but giving coloured light for your shadows (just as a fun idea). Webcam quality is generally poor compared to other types of camera - though I assume microphone is separate (which currently sounds great).
acrefray different colors for different topics is a great idea! You are correct that we have a separate mic from the webcam. We want to upgrade both but the camera is a much higher priority since the mic is already good.
Westeros History Don't forget to make sure where your sitting is comfortable, and decide if you need anything to keep you cool (and potentially keep your equipment cool) since with additional lights and equipment will add heat to the room. You could also get a small 4-track sound-desk to run your microphone (and any other additional tracks) through there to really get the sounds you want.
+Westeros History (AA Podcast) Awesome! I have to become patron. You guys have the best podcast & I'll gladly help if that means more episodes frequently
Did they succeed at Summerhall? Maybe they were told sacrifice was required to birth the prince who was promised resulting in Rhaegars birth and therefore Jon/Dany depending on which theory you believe. Did she see the others in a vision? Maybe Rhaegar discovered/was told about their sacrifice when he was young and that caused him to 'need a sword' awesome video though
I always felt it was so sad that The Laughing Storm and Dunc and Egg ended up being at odds, because Lionel Baratheon was kind of their friend. He stood up for Dunc in the first Novella. I'm sure Dunc felt bad having to fight him, luckily it was not to the death, and they had some reconciliation afterword.
ok I know I'm late to this party but this has bothered me since I read the bit in the book if wildfire can consume stone how is sand going to stop it? sand+regular fire=glass if it was already out of control wouldn't everyone be encased in a big blob of glass?
A small amount of sand would probably not do much, but I think the implication is that they use vast amounts, enough to smother the flames. As you say though, I imagine there is glass left behind, probably a lot. Unless it just incinerates it or something.
I have to say I liked the color of the light in the other videos better. I see your point about it being too dark but maybe you can just color grade your video. I think starting out with a neutral white look and then changing it in post is actually the way to go.
"Fire *OR* Blood" makes me think, what if Egg was told that a blood sacrifice would be necessary to hatching the dragons, but he was led to believe that the blood might be substituted for "fire" - in this case wildfyre. Perhaps that's how the Pyromancers got involved, stuck between a rock and a hard place he had to go with what he thought at the time to be the 'lesser' evil. Not fond of the pyromancers, but seemingly needing of their services. Of course, he was wrong. The pyromancers were wrong. And provided it wasn't them who did it, whomever advised him of the ability to substitute fire for blood was wrong.
At the beginning of this video I'm asking this question: Was Aerys complicit in the fire? He had a lot to gain, and grew to have a loving relationship with fire over time, using it to remove threats to his reign. I'll watch and see if you touch on that....NOW
Do we know who's the 7 eggs each belonged to? We know from Egg that every newborn targaryen is given an egg in its cot. So if they each kept them and brought them to be hatched who do you think the 7 eggs would have belonged to?
Bryan Karman We're going to talk about it somewhat in part 2, but it will be mostly speculation since there isn't a lot of info there. Still, the brainstorming will be fun!
Keep it up. Just saying though, Aegon is the One True King of Westeros. The line of succession is clear, the son of Rheagar, born to lead, bred to rule, the only just candidate to sit the Iron Throne.
I know it takes a lot of work to put this together, so I don't want to be unappreciative... but this could use some editing. I found I had difficulty following along and getting distracted... My two cents: make 10 ten minute videos instead of one hour and a half video.
My personal theory is that Jaehaerys was involved in starting the fire. As far as I’m aware, at this point not only has the prophecy come to light about Aerys and Rhaella, but Duncan was being welcomed back to court, and no doubt there were rumors that his rights would be restored. Aegon I’s dream about the prince that was promised spurred him to conquer westeros bc there needed to be a unified kingdom, under his family, resulting (eventually) in the Prince that was promised who would lead them to the dawn. Therefore, Prince that was promised must be on the throne. If Duncan is restored to favor, Aerys would likely not become king, therefore his children would be even further from the throne. Rhaegar being born probably was the spark that lit the flame (metaphorically and literally), as there was now an heir through that line. That being said, I haven’t read all the source material, so I am not the end all be all. If anyone has corroborated or conflicting evidence, please let me know!
The missing reply button thing happens when people don't have their "who can interact with you and your posts" settings in Google+ set to "anyone." And yes, this also always leaves me puzzled when people ask direct questions, apparently unaware that they explicitly forbade the world to talk to them. I wonder how many existential crises were triggered by people despairing over "Whyyyyyy! Every idiot gets responses on UA-cam, however insulting or worthless. Why not me? Why does nobody ever talk to me?! Why do I not even get yelled at by 13-year-old kids who only made it half-way through my question before giving up on the reading thing? WHY?!" I've even seen at least one obvious troll post with the comments disabled. Although writing for the sole reason of eliciting angry responses and then switching off the reply button ... that's kinda genius. Might pass as a nihilistic performance art project.
I just finished reading from Aegon to Robert in the book World of Ice and Fire and are you kidding me?? Aegon the Unlikely is totally still alive. They brought back Rhaegars first Aegon, then revealed Jon was also his son, also named Aegon… then they don’t tell you what happened to Aegon the unlikely?!?! No no no I know game of thrones is brutal but you don’t do Duncan and Egg like that. Everyone had already hated Aegon, his own kids hated him and wouldn’t listen, Egg didn’t deserve whatever it is that happened there and no way he died accidentally playing with wild fire. If he really died that very night of the fire… no that’s not what it looked like, with how long his brother Aemon lived I bet there’s more to his story beyond the adventures to come and the truth of what happened that night
blackfyre would of paid for a hell of allot of kills .Its virtually priceless. The valyrian steel sword of aegon the conqueror .Thats plausible imo. Although it doesn't seem like george would write that . Its too vague. Im sure its as simple as it seems . Someone screwed up.
AegonSnow Could have been Tywin Lannister. He'd been befriending Aerys, perhaps even grooming him, to be King as his younger friend, seeking out to place himself in a more prestigious position of power, given his dad had sent Casterly Rock to shit with his mistressing and such. It could have been the plan to marry their kids together, placing, for the first time, Lannister blood on the throne. They had, after all, been friends to a couple of years by that time.

Why does this only have 286 likes so far?!? That is a tragedy itself!
another thing is that dragons gave wildfire and firemagic in general a boost. Maybe Egg nd pyromancers reverse-associated things
Ahhhh yes. One of the most important mysteries in the books, but hardly ever touched on.

robbers19 Yes, we'll be getting back to Blackfyres at the end of the month or early sept!
It could also be that this event was what made the future Aerys II so into wildfire.
Jonathan Luoto Maybe because he also dream alot about dragons.Like that dude who just drink a jug of wildfire that think he can become a dragon.
Jonathan Luoto definitely, it will be a major theme of part 2.

Good idea.
Could the so-called maester conspiracy have had a hand in screwing up the ritual using some hidden knowledge from the bowels of the Citadel?
***** Even before this video I've thought that the maester's had a hand in keeping the targs from "birthing" new dragons. I mean they basically got rid of them via genetic diluting
Ryan F And by inciting the Dance of the Dragons and trying to form a 7 kingdom alliance before Robert's Rebellion.
***** On a totally unrelated note, how's your neck, Vlad?
***** Good question!
I love Roy Dotrice, he has a great voice to listen to =)
Here's some feedback from a diehard fan of yours, if you can slow down a couple of notches in your speech that would be great. Especially in the podcasts. Your content is so rich and exciting, it would be even better if you can speak slowly so we the Watchners can can take it in without the rush of catching up. (I understand that you have so much to talk in a limited while, just don't belittle your exhaustive research by making it sound like a chore). Keep up the great work, I always shop from Amazon using your referral.
caprico82 thanks for the feedback, we will try to set a more appropriate pace.
caprico82 On the same "speech" note: I loved that you guys put on a voice effect when you were quoting the books. Great idea!
They should cast Ashaya as Lyanna Stark.
Thanhtu Nguyen
Myranda Royce !
Kevin Moore Azor and Ahaya! That's great, we should indeed do that. We certainly don't see any bodies, so it's hard to rule most things out.
Westeros History Just don't rename the cat Nissa Nissa.
He also does an awesome radio-style
post-episode live show during the GoT season.
+TheBigjim1992 dany isnt immune all targs are gear resistant but not fireproof the dragons hatching was a miracle not gonna hapen again
Ashaya, you burn like wild fire in my heart.
When are you guys releasing part 2 for everyone to view and not just patrons? Just curious
elevatedmind A little under 36 hours from now!
+Westeros History (AA Podcast) Awesome! I have to become patron. You guys have the best podcast & I'll gladly help if that means more episodes frequently
I'd love to see Dunk & Eg done as an animated series and have it concluded with Summerhall.
Will your Blackfyre video include considering the possibility of Varys being the last male(!) Blackfyre alive and Young Griff being his nephew?
Is there any talk of what happened to the 7 eggs that were at Summerhall?
hollin220 We will bring that up in the aftermath episode. Stay tuned!
Where is part 2?
here ya go: ua-cam.com/video/kbgMl0LgNn0/v-deo.html
Westeros History ur awesome!! Love the videos.
Thank you. I hadn't seen part II, either! A perfect way to pass a hot hot June afternoon- watching part II and sipping iced nettle tea.
Considering the accusations n beliefs of the maesters could one of them sabotaged the egg hatching
Where do you get that map right behind your head?
www.klaradox.de from Michael Klarfeld!
Did they succeed at Summerhall? Maybe they were told sacrifice was required to birth the prince who was promised resulting in Rhaegars birth and therefore Jon/Dany depending on which theory you believe. Did she see the others in a vision?
Maybe Rhaegar discovered/was told about their sacrifice when he was young and that caused him to 'need a sword'
awesome video though
I always felt it was so sad that The Laughing Storm and Dunc and Egg ended up being at odds, because Lionel Baratheon was kind of their friend. He stood up for Dunc in the first Novella. I'm sure Dunc felt bad having to fight him, luckily it was not to the death, and they had some reconciliation afterword.
John Lanouette With you there. Without that friendship, it is likely enough that the Rebellion didn't end as peacefully.
John Lanouette Its the kind of romantic tragedy that is typical of Martin's writing. It makes for more ambivalent and interesting characters. :)
yes that is very true! Red Wedding being an example. or what happened between and jamie
ok I know I'm late to this party but this has bothered me since I read the bit in the book if wildfire can consume stone how is sand going to stop it? sand+regular fire=glass if it was already out of control wouldn't everyone be encased in a big blob of glass?
A small amount of sand would probably not do much, but I think the implication is that they use vast amounts, enough to smother the flames. As you say though, I imagine there is glass left behind, probably a lot. Unless it just incinerates it or something.
Do you think the children's book ICE DRAGON was in the Westeros universe during the Blackfyre rebellions?
Also, nice 'Stark Industries tankard' Aziz. If Tony Stark could cross universes if Benjen's lost to us, we can hope.
I have to say I liked the color of the light in the other videos better. I see your point about it being too dark but maybe you can just color grade your video. I think starting out with a neutral white look and then changing it in post is actually the way to go.
Nice
At the beginning of this video I'm asking this question:
Was Aerys complicit in the fire? He had a lot to gain, and grew to have a loving relationship with fire over time, using it to remove threats to his reign.
I'll watch and see if you touch on that....NOW
YAAAAAAY!!
Can you speak more on your theory that Illyrio has Blackfyre?
video not working....
finally a decent summer hall vid =)
*Edit Roy Detrice is the man! anyone who says otherwise is wrong =D
Keep it up. Just saying though, Aegon is the One True King of Westeros. The line of succession is clear, the son of Rheagar, born to lead, bred to rule, the only just candidate to sit the Iron Throne.
youngbuck189 if he is the son of Rhaegar, and not Ilyrio's, you mean.
point to note. no weirwood related dreamer or seer talks about or ever sees essos
yes, YES, YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!1
thank the gods!
I know this is 2years old but if danaris can’t be burned how come all these other targaryans are dying by fire
Yaaay Ashaya.
Wildfire is fire made liquid ....dragons are fire made flesh
I feel like we should play a ASOIF Campaign xD
I know it takes a lot of work to put this together, so I don't want to be unappreciative... but this could use some editing. I found I had difficulty following along and getting distracted... My two cents: make 10 ten minute videos instead of one hour and a half video.
OHHHHHHHH YES
23:48 I see what you did there. S+B=M
WHY?!"
I've even seen at least one obvious troll post with the comments disabled. Although writing for the sole reason of eliciting angry responses and then switching off the reply button ... that's kinda genius. Might pass as a nihilistic performance art project.
Maybe Egg wasnt a true dragon like Danny so he couldnt hatch the eggs?? Even Viseries died from molten gold/intense amount of heat.
Dany is NOT immune to fire.
No Targaryans are.
So Spaketh GRRM himself.
Hopefully bran can go back n find out the truth
If Ciara Seastone is Mel . Could she have sacrificed them to her god?
blackfyre would of paid for a hell of allot of kills .Its virtually priceless. The valyrian steel sword of aegon the conqueror .Thats plausible imo. Although it doesn't seem like george would write that . Its too vague. Im sure its as simple as it seems . Someone screwed up.
could a targaryen have sabotaged the attempt? like Maegar?
AegonSnow All the known Targaryens of the era were at Summerhall, so it is possible. Aerys, perhaps.
I just remember you guys saying one of them was skipped over at the great council for Aegon the Unlikely. A "I should have been king" moment.
They had, after all, been friends to a couple of years by that time.
it doesn't affect the original story at all, he need to write the original story first befor we can change it... get it George rr Martian honistly gave up on his story for more money in other stories now the freaking shows going to tell us every thing because he has no time left. sale out piece of work gosh darn him
I think the trdgedy at/in Summerhall was an attempt to forge lightbringer which Danny did.... Drogon
Jon snows sword should b renamed the !!#Big Cat
too bright guys
too much waffle
What's up with that fake laugh
I'm afraid it's real, haha.
Ashaya is so beautiful. This dude is lucky.
