    Nicely done! He is arguably my favorite indirect character, being an insatiable lore junkie that I am. He is an almost perfectly written lore delivery system. In my mind I picture him to be a perfect mix of Maester Amon and Gendry. Maybe a little litteral. Thanks for another great episode; Do not change a thing! .

    ~14:30 Sounds a lot like an emperor in our world: Justinian, who cleared up the clutter of Roman laws and created the Corpus Juris Civilis, the Justinian Code of Laws. Of course he also had help from Tribonian, who would be the analogue to Septon Barth here. Justinian also went on to mend church schisms and rebuild his empire, much like Jaehaerys.

    25:45 The Asshai'i probably didn't drink the polluted water, but imported bottled water. Also, horses can not tolerate foal water better than humans. In fact, horses can't vomit out toxins, so they will colic and die, where humans won't.

    The Aemon/Barth argument for Dany as the Princess That was Promised is no irrefutable, as no one within the story, besides maybe Mel, has even considered Jon Snow.

    Catching up on some of the videos I missed. The Septon Barth book was in the library at Winterfell. Tyrion absentmindedly took it to the Wall with him when he went with Jon Snow, saving it from the library fire. Its arrival at Castle Black was probably quite a surprise for Maester Aemon. He probably had his steward read it to him right away.

    Great job as usual, missed Ashaya though. By the way, I would love to hear a podcast about all the interrupted conversations in the series, the ones where something is about to be revealed by a character and then some action happens. For e.g., when Brienne is with Gendry at the Crossroads Inn and begins with "listen to me.." And is interrupted by Rorge and Biter arriving at the scene. There are multiple such interrupted conversations, I am sure you know what I am talking about, would love to have an episode about those. Oh and thanks for recommending Radio Westeros, they are amazing.

    I wonder if Rodrik Harlaw might have a copy of Unnatural History in the Book Tower, or at least fragments of it. One the one hand, the Faith of the Seven isn't very strong in the Iron Islands, though on the other Rodrik did use septons to help tend to his books, so it's possible they might have purged any Barth texts he may have had.

    Great vid. Looking back im kind of surprised Tyrion wasn't talking to Maester Ammon for hours upon hours during is visit to the wall to talk knowledge and history they've read and seen. I would assume Tyrion knew who Ammon was. And no one has really touched on this but do you think Dunk was actually knighted by sir Arland?

  • @johnlanouette8611
    @johnlanouette8611 10 років тому +4

    Unfortunately most of the Maesters at the Citadel would probably want to suppress or destroy some of those books that Sam may have brought with him (if they refer to the higher mysteries), and wouldn't that make the poor old dears ring their hands!

    • @covenawhite4855
      @covenawhite4855 5 років тому

      Despite not wanting a copy available to the public. The Maesters probably kept one copy and hid it in the forbidden zone of the Library of the Citadel where books are protected by a locked room. The top rung of the Maesters horde forbidden knowledge not allowed to the lords, ladies, merchants and even lower level Maesters the Accolites and Maesters given to unimportant Noble Houses. Because Maesters realize Magic is power and the world may need it in an emergency that could destroy Westeros or the Maesters position in Westeros.

    I love the videos. There is one thing I'd like some clarification on in this video, however. Did Barth believe that the "prince" would be a woman, or did he just point out that a proper translation didn't rule out the possibility? If so, then it's just Aemon who is convinced that Daenerys is the "prince" who was promised. That would make quite a bit of sense if, like others in his family, he was convinced that the "prince" would be of his bloodline. As far as Aemon knows, Daenerys is the only one left who could fulfill the prophecy, and she has awoken three dragons from petrified eggs. It all seems to fit. But, if R+L does in fact equal J, then there is another possible "prince" that he simply doesn't know about. That leaves us with two different Targaryens convinced that two different descendants are this "prince". Aemon comes to believe it's Daenerys, and Rhaegar believed it to be his son...who many believe is Jon Snow. So, was Martin announcing Daenerys as the "prince" that far back, or is he simply keeping us guessing as to the true identity of the "prince"?

    I think maybe humans could be mutated "children"? The children are 'older' and have abilities humans seem to have all but lost. A disaster from mining and fracking in Old Valyria which incidentally created magma channels could have led to tectonic instability and the release of toxic chemicals which could have caused the illnesses endemic to Essos.

    1st of all this is the first and only podcast I've ever bothered with (just discovered it and have been totally binge watching) and have to tell you it ROCKS! 2nd I'm addicted to both the books and the show even though they differ somewhat, apples and oranges right, they're both awesome for so many reasons. 3rd at 36 minutes in you mention blood magic, the beasts, slave pits and half human children and it brings my brain back to Miri , blood magic, her spell in the tent and Danys' baby. Whats your opinion?

    Ive heard tales about a Bloodstone Emperor from the stars, Ive heard tales that when he died, another star fell from the sky to take his place. It has been alluded to and talked about how there is a larger game being played than the game of thrones. One of the best ways for a lord to secure power is through marriage. What if the dragons are the result of some sort of marriage between higher powers and dragons are the result? Something about what is known about ASoiaf and the quote from Qarth about the second moon in the sky, seems to make me think this way.

    Is that black stone the same as the base of the citadel, and asshai? Because i think that stone is used to hide from "Gods".
    Also i can see a parallel with that ancient race that brought magic to Valeria, and the children of the forest teaching their magics to the first men. They didn't conquer with it because they're like the children, just singing songs and living off the earth. Where as men will abuse the power, and the earth collecting resources.

      I think the black stone on 'Battle Isle' is meant to symbolize that dragons once roosted there and Hightowers built their castle on top of that black stone as a boast of their triumph over whatever ancient dragons were there in those days. They continued this vendetta with their neverending proxy-war against the Targaryens and their dragons using the Maesters, Faith of the 7, Faith Militant, and Warrior Sons, which resulted in the death of dragons and the culling of the Targaryen dynasty.

      Felt AWoIaF was the big brake pump for what Aemon said. Dragons have a sex, it's just not thought they did because they were near gods like their masters who married brother to sister, above the rules of man and god's.
