Completely comfortable holding a set of brushes, and content to focus on great timekeeping, even in the quintet that bears his name. We miss you Charlie.
Living in a castle is pretty good for someone who couldn't play a solo. If he had been that kind of player, they probably wouldn't have sold as many records as they did.
Incredible... real musicians, not a computer effect. This is how it's done. Thank you Charlie for your amazing mark on music history beyond the Stones.
One of the BIG items is to note the size (or lack there of) of his drum kit! THIS probably says more about Charlie as a drummer than anything else. I had the pleasure of catching him with his "Big Band" a number of years ago and he NEVER took a solo and seemed to push every member of the band out into the spot light, while keeping himself in the background. Just a classy guy, who will be GREATLY missed in the musical world!
Tasty, tasty smooth brush work by Charlie. Shows the true depth of his ability on drum kit. Nobody will argue his iconic work with the Rolling Stones but his versatility at different genres of music is refreshing to see. He will be missed. RIP.
I have that album and have listened to it many many times but it's a treat to see him playing live like this he was an amazing drummer and will be missed....
A class act and Charlie was a REAL drummer who knew his place and didn´t need tons of cymbals and drums to prove it. A fantastic drummer and a true gentleman completely in my personal taste!
only saw the Stones once, in 1994, but will always remember Mick introducing each of the band members...no lie, Charlies ovation was twice as long as anyone else's...Keith & Ronnie's receptions paled in comparison...anyone who loved that band knows Charlie was the backbone. Kind of amazing he's gone, yet Keith just keeps going and going and going, likely to outlive us all.
The Rolling stones have lost a brother!!! As have we all, but my real love go's out to kieth, mick Ronnie and all the band past and present. He was one of lifes true Gentlmen, who seemed to be happy not haveing the big spot light moments but had alot of wise thoughts if you had tge time to really listen.RjIP Charlie
One more thing! Back in the early 80s, I would ask my sisters this question. What comes to mind when you think of the Rolling Stones. Their answer: Charlie Watts! No joke!!
Never saw this before. Bernard Fowler’s voice was silken. The quintet was on point and there was Charlie as always, in the background quietly anchoring the whole proceedings. Bless you, Charlie. Rest In Peace.
I love seeing Pete King in fine form on alto saxophone - I remember buying the "Warm & Tender" album from a record shop when I was in Iowa, just to get out of the cold. - R.I.P Pete King and Charlie Watts.
Awestruck by that performance. Not only by Charlie's always impeccable timekeeping, but the whole performance by the entire band. I'll be looking more into the jazz that Charlie released. Great clip.
I love this song by most anyone I hear si sing g it. This time I watched charlie watts smiling and looking g relaxed. That added even more to this so g.
As much as Mick's voice and Keith's guitar, Charlie Watts's snare sound is the Rolling Stones. When Mick sings, 'It's only rock 'n' roll but I like it,' Charlie's in back showing you why! 🇧🇷
I'm here for Chatlie. But that singer's voice is really good, the band too. The sound is something new for me. I'll keep looking for Charlie Watts quintet stuff now. Warm and Tender album is wonderful.
Agree. I liked rock when I was a young man. My musical taste started to change to jazz as I was getting older. An album that impressed me a lot is "Charlie Parker with Strings".
Like below, CW looks like this was really where he was meant to be. Possibly sad too, since he never liked the Star stuff but being rich meant he could put together a band like this and possibly pad things when gigs were few. Thanks Charlie, see you soon...
Best Charlie Watts story I've read: A drunk Mick Jagger was calling Watts hotel room to come join a party and asked him "Where's my drummer?" so Watts goes down to the party, opens the door, punches Jagger in the face and says "Don't ever call me your drummer again, you're my fucking singer."
You missed the best part. Apparently Jagger Woke Charlie up. And Watts got out of bed, took a shower and shaved. Then shined his shows and picked the best clothes in his closet. Took a car to the hotel where Mick and Keith were, and as soon as Mick opened the door, Charlie suckered punch him and then said those lines.. I like to think he was taking his time getting dressed up while thinking "I'm gonna F'ed him up..."
@@lorenzoaramirez3915 AND, according to Keith's book, the punch knocked Mick over a tray of salmon, towards an open window, which he nearly fell out of...maybe the best rock & roll story ever.
My favorite Charlie watts story - The stones were on tour around the Voodoo Lounge era. Mick, Keith, Ron and other were down in the hotel bar having a good time with media types and others. A drunk Mick calls up to Charlie's room and says, "Hey, where's my drummer, man?" I believe Charlie showered, shaved, got smashingly dressed, and went down stairs to the bar. He went up to Mick, punch him in the face, laid him out and yelled, "I'm not your fucking drummer, man! You're my fucking singer!!!!"
Its is told by Keith in his book Life, the facts you state are a bit different...but you have the general drift. Of note, it was in a hotel room nearby his, and hi punch knocked Mick onto a food tray of salmon, and almost out a window above a canal.
REST EASY Charlie. Thanks for being part of our soundtrack
He looks so at home playing jazz. Never really listened to this part of his career but I'm gonna check it out right now. Rip
I didn't even know about this part of his career! Love it.
Wow. Same. This is awesome!
I have all his solo work...its terrific.
Charlie *worked* with the Stones, but really *played* with *these* guys.
@@DrDespicable That's a very nice way to describe it! The difference between frowning, and looking relaxed with a big grin. :)

He didn't have the technique to play anything else
@@davidfarrell4286 He said as much in his Bob Costas interview.
He always said he wasn't good. And that Mick was an awesome stage presence. And keef was brilliant at arranging
He personally gave this CD to me.. glorious human being. So special. My heart is aching…
it must have been a thrill ! .... i hate that he’s gone 😞
Wow!!!
You can see Charlie is really in his own element...Smiling, a little head bobbing...Rest in Peace Charlie...
This is some mediocre shit.

Yeah!!! What Pat said... Gentleman... totally cool dude.. Picture him just watching Peter Pan runnin' bout the stage
@@Bartolllo huh ?
Well not really, you just use a smaller kit to play jazz due to the tuning
Smooth as silk RIP Charlie Watts
Bernard Fowler has an awesome voice
God Bless Charlie Watts, such a class act.
A legend in so many ways. He will be missed but his legacy lives on forever.
So happy here, playing the music he loved.
This is such a lovely side to Charlie....smiling...
He really looked in his element. Rest easy Charlie. Thanks for the great music.
So glad I saw them twenty like times, including this quintet. RIP Dear Charlie.
Wow, you got to see the Quintet....I would have loved to do that!
@@eg4449 Nov. 2001, the Blue Note jazz club in NY.
Thanks for this upload, Don. Nice to see Charlie playing the music he truly loved.
I always thought he was the coolest Stone (this performance lends credence to my theory).
Thx for posting, Don.
Agreed
except this is pretty cheezy and he sucks as a jazz drummer
@@juliosanchez8263 We can't all be Buddy Rich or Billy Cobham now, can we?

I'm on my second copy of that particular album of Charlie's. Simply magnificent.

Fun to see Charlie Watts in a different setting. A stressed out world could use to listen to more jazz.

Had the same experience (Voodoo Lounge Tour). Charlie's ovation was loud, long and heartfelt. I looked at my friend and said, "Excellent".
You are right!! As long Charlie kept the pace, he was the backbone of the Stones.
One more thing! Back in the early 80s, I would ask my sisters this question. What comes to mind when you think of the Rolling Stones. Their answer: Charlie Watts! No joke!!
Keith is immortal, like Connor McLeod the Highlander !😉
This is exactly what I needed to start my day rip mr. Watts
Great to see Stones backup singer Bernard Fowler stepping out front.
I hope to see more of these slices of his life so cool
Super!! C'est la première fois que je le vois en concert. Très bien 😊❤
A whole new level of Appreciation & Respect. Thank U Mr. Watts.🥁
He did like Charlie Parker ...Charlie Watts was a legend R.I.P.
Anyone who can appreciate Bird is OK in my book.
So nice to see Charlie relaxed and loving the music. RIP.
Band includes Dave Green (who was at primary school with Charlie), Peter King (alto), Gerard Presencer (trumpet)
Thank you!
And Bernard Fowler on vocals.
Gerard Presencer blew the trumpet solo on US3's "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)." Thanks for the personnel, Oliver.

He really got to show his musical diversity
He always played to fit the song and just what it took to magnify the song and its performance.
