This is how I look for ideas too. I get color cues, shape cues, light cues, etc. from a mix of photos. And I puzzle them together into a painting. Then I look for cues from the painting, and add things here and there ... a branch, a bird, cloud, flower etc. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎨
Usually I'm not a big fan of desert scenes, but the plastic wrap gives this painting so much textural interest that I'm going to try one of my own. The video is succinct yet thorough. I absolutely enjoyed it! Thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing with us. Love the blue apatite genuine sky and the textured mountains. But the windswept tree is the cherry on top. This is beautiful!
i live in new mexico and yes it does look like this in some places, also the sunsets and sky are amazing to look at day or night. Thank you for your videos, you are a wonderful lady!
Such a beautiful, atmospheric painting! I love the way you allow the paint to work, so keeping it fresh. Thinking and praying for all of you in these frightening times. Keep safe! 😘
I love this Jean. You make it look so easy. I hope to use your techniques to représent the beautiful landscapers of Utah. Thx for sharing your awesome painting techniques.
I'm always excited when I see a new video posted by you! Looking forward to experimenting with the red and brown oxides, two colors that appeal to me! I'm hoping those wildfires are contained soon!
Hi Jean, Thank you for another wonderful video. You inspire me. I always look forward to seeing your videos. I have learned a great deal from you about semi abstracts. Be well and stay safe.
Hi Jean…..I went looking for a tutorial on how to paint a desert scene. I happily came across this! I love the cling film effect for texture, but it’s been a few years since I learned how to use it. So, thank you! I don’t have the same colours you have and will have to see what I can use with what I have in my paint box. Thanks again for all you wonderful tutorials.
I cannot wait to give this a go, I wait in great anticipation each week, for your clips on UA-cam, Jean. I love how you explain the steps. Your style of painting keeps me encouraged and looking forward to putting watercolour on paper and I hope the wildfires are under control, sooner rather than later. We here completely understand the situation. Take care.
Thank you Jean I really appreciate this fabulous tutorial. In 1992 I actually lived in the desert in Australia “Lake Mungo” it’s near Melbourne I seem to remember. I have many amazing memories of that time so having your tutorial has inspired me to paint it and bring back many fantastic experiences of living there in my car for months and months on end. Thank you for the opportunity
This is stunning!! I LOVE that tree! I've been painting a lot of water scenes lately but I just might have to switch gears... Thanks for being such an inspiration! I love your work!
Beautiful painting, I love the colors and the texture of it. It’s amazing how you look at some pictures and then create something very unique and with atmosphere. Your work is really inspiring, thank you for sharing :)
How beautiful we live in south australia we have just been camping in our flinders ranges the colours you used are just like the Rockfaces we saw I’m going to try this ....Thankyou for sharing ❤️
Thank you for this tutorial. You get such great results and you make it so understandable the way you explain techniques and reasons why you do each step. I have followed along with a couple of your tutorials and learned so much. My appreciation for and ability with watercolor has certainly grown from watching your videos.
Loved this! BAG is one of my new favorites too. I painted a whole piece with it and a tiny bit of perylene green. I just set up a new palette with trans red and brown oxide-colors I never used so this video was timely for me. Thank you.
Very beautifull Jean, lovely techniques and it looks so easy tot make. I will definitely going tot try this one out. Thank you very much for sharing ❤️
Fantastic Jean. Thank you. I love how you combined ideas from 3 different pics. And thank you for recommending Pixabay. It seems that texture was created the moment you placed the cling wrap down. What would happen if you removed it right away?
I’m new at this so my question is what is the difference in papers 300g to 160 ? I absolutely love your work and your explanation of how you are accomplishing your look. You’re awesome 💖 thank you so much.
Thank you. I’m starting with 300 is that good? To be seen. Afraid to start. Need hobby and I’ve acrylic painted, poured and I love to work with colors. I keep going back to your videos for knowledge. Thank you so much. Not sure how long I’ll be able to hold a brush, Parkinson’s has a grip on me.
This style and setting is right up my alley. Thanks Jean for a great tutorial. Do you have to leave the plastic on overnight to dry? Is there any way to speed up drying when you use plastic wrap?
Hi Jean, Beautiful painting and you do it so (apparently) effortlessly. I’m wondering, do you usually use 140 lb hot press as opposed to cold press or only when you are going for a certain effect, such as more granulation?
Hi Rob. If you purchase watercolors online there is usually a description that will tell you whether the paint is granulating or not. I would also suggest visiting Daniel Smith and other brand sites where they give detailed descriptions on each of their watercolors. They will always mention whether they granulate or not.
Not sure what you mean by 4 0r 5? I cut this from a larger sheet of watercolor paper and the size was 1" x 6.5" It doesn't really matter what size you use but wider horizontally for this composition I felt was better.
Hi Jean, remember me? I'm the guy who talked to you about your notification bell not working. Anyways, I did a bit of web-surfing and found an apparent solution. It's odd that UA-cam couldn't (wouldn't?) give it to you. Seems that sometimes, when a person subscribes, this problem pops up. To solve it all the person has to do is unsubscribe and then subscribe again. I've done that one three different channels where I've experienced the problem and this fixed it each time. Just thought you might want to know in case someone else pesters you about it (grin).
Thanks so much for the updae Larry. I contacted UA-cam about it and got no reply. Now I know how to solve the issue. Really appreciate your updating me.
Dear Jean, when you draw the hills in the background, shouldn't they be lighter? It irritates me somehow...Usually the closer objects are, the darker they get. and the hills are far away.....or don't you mind just for creativity?? I don't want to criticize that, I just noticed it. You are free to do whatever you want...I love your paintings anyway.
It's more of an abstract painting and if I made the hills too light they would not have much of an impact. I took artistic license and made them the same value as the foreground to play the colors off each other.
I adore this painting. Thank you.

Simplifying the subject and expressing your own work so nicely, the one strong tree in the desolate desert is amazing.
I really like these images of deserts and Jean captures their atmosphere perfectly. Thanks
The plastic wrap is a great way to capture the desert landscape, lovely composition
Clingfilm is a great way to create the dunes - it’s a struggle to paint them with the shading. Thanks so much 🙏

I just love the texture of the plastic wrap makes. I use it sometimes. Beautiful

Love the texture used cling wrap on acrylic but will now try with watercolour
Thanks so much for sharing with us. Love the blue apatite genuine sky and the textured mountains. But the windswept tree is the cherry on top. This is beautiful!
That was absolutely beautiful. Now I want to paint the Namibia desert at Sossius Vlei. Thank you.
Love the windswept tree, color palette, & textures!

PS your advice on finding a few photos that include certain aspects to use in ONE painting rather than simply copying the photo, is brilliant!!! 🙏
love your work and the simplistic approach. I have taken a few of your courses and enjoyed them. thank you

Molto bello! la texture con la pellicola davvero interessante, grazie dell'idea
Thank you sharing your knowledge. Was inspired and I was braved enough to complete the dessert painting.
Wow, I absolutely loved this one. My results weren't quite as pretty, but it was so much fun, and I'll be sure to try again.
Another wonderful demonstration...you make it look so easy! Love your work.
So beautiful! Great tutorial and I like the technique with the cling wrap

Beautiful as always!
I like it
Hello it was a wonderful tutorial. Thank you so much. I would like to learn the website where you found the photos?
I’m new at this so my question is what is the difference in papers 300g to 160 ? I absolutely love your work and your explanation of how you are accomplishing your look. You’re awesome 💖 thank you so much.
It's about the weight and thickness of the paper. The thinner the paper the more it will buckle when using a lot of water.
@@lindaehemann9677 Take your time. You. can do it.
That makes sense. I’ll try the 300 g first. Thank you. 💝
This style and setting is right up my alley. Thanks Jean for a great tutorial. Do you have to leave the plastic on overnight to dry? Is there any way to speed up drying when you use plastic wrap?
The painting should be dry within an hour - sometimes less depending on where you are and weather conditions. Hope this helps.
Hi Jean, Beautiful painting and you do it so (apparently) effortlessly. I’m wondering, do you usually use 140 lb hot press as opposed to cold press or only when you are going for a certain effect, such as more granulation?
I'm a newbie at watercolour painting & this might seem a daft question but how do you know which paint tube colours granulate? Love your style
Hi Rob. If you purchase watercolors online there is usually a description that will tell you whether the paint is granulating or not. I would also suggest visiting Daniel Smith and other brand sites where they give detailed descriptions on each of their watercolors. They will always mention whether they granulate or not.
@@JeanLurssen Thank you so much Jean
Did you use ink or paint for the tree?
I used sky color mixed with neutral tint watercolors.
whats the size of paper apparently its not a4 or a5?
Not sure what you mean by 4 0r 5? I cut this from a larger sheet of watercolor paper and the size was 1" x 6.5" It doesn't really matter what size you use but wider horizontally for this composition I felt was better.
Jean Lurssen i meant A4 and A5 paper size but info you gave helps thank you for replying me back ❤️
Hi, your vidéos not in french ? 😞 thanks
