Good morning, Laura. As a retired teacher and novice at seed starting I really appreciate how well organized and informative your planting lessons are. It gives me confidence to go forward with starting my plants from seed. Thanks!
I look forward to these videos and the joy they bring to this dreary time of the year. It is grey and cold outside and I am all comfortable watching Laura and Garden Answer. What a wonderful start to the day.
Ive been seeing a lot of videos on Lisianthus, I’m not sure why I’ve never them before. But you inspired me to order them and try to grow them this season. THANK YOU!!!
I enjoy your enthusiasm about getting seeds started early. My climate is opposite of yours with high humidity and lots of rain. I'm not sure these plants would enjoy our weather without some cover. Cosmos, zinnias and marigolds do well planted in the garden. Rabbits are a big problem for us and ate all but a few of my sunflowers last year. I put up a fence but the rabbits climbed over or squeezed under to eat my beloved sunflower seedlings.
We downsized in 2018 from 6 acres to a 1/2 acre. While I've done everything possible to love it here, there just isn't enough land. Watching you most every day has convinced me the old adage holds true to me, "you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl". We are seriously looking to size up in land, down in house size. You've inspired me to live my dream while I can. Thanks, Laura!!
I blame you for my addiction to seed shopping. I’ve never had luck growing seeds, though I realize quite a few of my mistakes now. That said, we moved to a new house with 3 acres of landscaped yard and most of the flowerbeds are covered with decorative rock so there is a lot of potential for flower planting once I get my husband to move the rock. There are 5 beds ready for flowers and I pulled the black eyed Susan’s and white daisies simply because I”m not a yellow and white flower girl. I have a ton of Zinnia seeds in vibrant colors waiting to be planted but also several new poppies and cosmos and other fun flowers waiting to go in. Fingers crossed I manage to keep the seedlings healthy
This is so exciting! We are expecting -35 windchills in MN today, so it does my heart good to see some flowers getting planted already! Thank you for your show.
Good morning everyone. We are expecting a few inches of snow here in Nebraska today and tonight and the wind is crazy. Planting seeds is so relaxing. Thank you for all of your help and advice, I really appreciate it with flowers. I'm good with veggies, but not so much with flowers.
I ordered my first two varieties of Lisianthus last night! How exciting!!! Thanks for the tips. Snagged some vermiculite this morning. Ready to get my hands dirty. 😊 Gonna edit this to wish everyone a happy Floret seed day!
Thank you for sharing this video Im in Ohio zone 6A and received seeds today finally starting. I enjoyed watching the sweet kitty in the background to,,,, I've adopted 6 feline family members here!!

This is my favorite flower. Can’t wait to see them bloom. Love your videos and start my mornings with you every day. Thank you for sharing your family with us. Much love to you all
Laura, I’m so excited I just bought my first haul of seeds from baker creek heirloom seeds. You have inspired me to try seeding and growing my own plants instead of buy them all full grown. This will be my first time sowing seeds and I’d have to admit im a bit nervous, but watching your videos about how to sow seeds has giving me a bit more confidence. Wish me luck and if I successfully grow them I’ll take a picture and tag garden answers on Facebook!! Love your channel and thank you so much for all the info you provide!!
The snow is absolutely beautiful.❤ A true winter wonderland. We've had zero snow in Ohio and dandelions popping up in our yards.🤦♀️ Can you update the merch store please and thank you? We need more colors of crew neck sweat shirts. Matching sweat pants would be pretty nice too.
I agree about mixing soil and water before potting. Makes things so much easier! I like using a spoon to fill my pots and cells. It's so much more accurate than using my hands.
Lizianthus are native to my North Texas-called “Texas Bluebells” where they grow naturally in prairie black gumbo soils along swales and creeks where the soil stays moist longer into summer. It’s always amazing to find these beautiful delicate blue flowers growing and blooming on blazing hot and dry summer days when everything else is crispy brown. As hard as these are to grow from seeds in controlled environments it’s seems unbelievable that’s they grow so well in terrible soils and in crowed prairie habitats. Nature is amazing.
I live in North Texas! Where have you seen these growing wild, Jeff? This is something I must see! They're not growing my black gumbo. Claiming these as our native own is just another reason to be Texas proud ::puffs out chest and struts around:: ~ Lisa
You help me keep my 88 straight it can get overwhelming and my yard is smaller than yours so You give me courage THANK YOU West Coast Canada I'm in snow too Chilliwack BC
I purchased lisianthus plants last year and was successful growing them here in Zone 7B, North MS. I was encouraged when the plants formed new basal growth in the fall, but after seeing this video, that may not be a good thing! They may possibly survive our winter since I see them listed as hardy to Zone 8, especially if we don't have a freeze like we had in February 2021. I'm ordering more, just in case! I will wait until another less busy year to try starting from seed. I think you'll find the verbascum will be very easy. Mine bloomed the first summer, and they are hardy for us. They reseed, but not aggressively. I have grown Southern Charm and Snowy Spires; both were equally easy. I got a very late start with my seed last summer and they still bloomed for me in the late summer and fall. They also take well to transplanting.
I give you so much credit for planting this lisianthus, I did them last year and will never do them again, I got 3 plants that bloomed well after other things were over, and it was inside in window, I have 2plants overwintering under grow lights, and they look good, granted I am in Alaska and dumb me wanted a challenge, so best of luck, I will watch yours bloom on your channel 🤗
Laura, I just got an e-mail saying you and Aaron and Jenny and Jerry are all going to be at the Proven Winners Grand Garden Show on Mackinac Island! All of you together and only one state away! Oh to go to Michigan in August! Will so be looking forward to those videos! You all together again!
It’s no wonder Lisianrhus isn’t widely grown in Georgia…we get far too much regular rain! They are beauties…sad for us…great for you Laura! We can enjoy yours from afar!
I started the verbascum last year and did have a couple smaller blooms so waiting for this years show, like my holly hocks that were show stoppers last year. Its a nice gift after two yr wait.
I grew lisianthus for the first time last year... successfully. OMG ! They are my all time favorite flower! So GORGEOUS! Definitely need to start with new seed. I tried last month to start a batch from last years packet. None grew. My new batch is growing great! I use warming mats on mine to get them started. Seems to work well. After that they are fine with just lots of light and continued watering (I spray mine generously and keep them on the moist side every day because, inside my house, the winter furnace heat tends to dry them out quickly.) Time to go start batch # 2. These are worth growing successive batches.
It’s pouring rain right now (& has been for a couple days), but in the midst of it I’m getting my first ever sprinkler system installed for my front & back lawns!!! I’m so excited. I’ve been saving for a couple years for this day. 🤗🤗The guys are wonderful (I’d hate to be out working in all this rain), but they’re moving right along. They’re also going to install drip in my flower gardens (I have 6) & in my little veggie garden. They even saved me the work of widening one of my gardens just a bit, moved the border, & flattened out the ground…all ready for spring planting. And then they’ll be hard-scaping around my little dwarf maple trees with slate pavers, crushed gravel, a few small boulders, and some river rock. It’s day 3 of the installation & there’s LOTS of mud areas, but I don’t care…it’s going to be beautiful in the end. Meanwhile, I’m going to get some seed to start now too for that newly expanded area.🤗🤗🤗🤗
Thank you for this! I loved your Lisianthus last year SO much that when I saw some at my local nursery early last summer I got all 3 colors they offered. Since then I've wondered about starting more from seed this year! I've had many adoring and curious compliments on them in my front yard!! I'm in 9b So.CA, and some haven't stopped blooming, even through our mild winter. I love them, even though I've felt much like a new mother with them! The "blue"(more royal purple color) gets the most swoony compliments, but surprisingly I love my "green" ones! They are the prettiest ivory white color with a soft lime green center. I also have "white", and they're so bright white they are beyond pristine! I didn't know about the various blooming times but this seems to explain why two plants slowed down at the end of summer, and the rest are still blooming. Thank you Laura! You always inspire me!
Laura, your excitement and enthusiasm are absolutely contagious! I must have caught the bug from you because I've been setting up my grow lights and propagation area! All the while, I'm trying to resist the temptation of starting seeds early! 💚
I am excited! I just registered for the Proven Winners event on Mackinac Island. We are Michiganders and love Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel. Can't wait to meet you and Kevin and possibly your family in person. Been an avid viewer for over a year and your show gives me great ideas for my own gardens. Let's pray for great weather and a wonderful conference.
I just love how effortlessly you teach… it’s so clear that you are always learning, observing, and thinking through the intricate details of endless things. It’s so fun to watch you work so hard and enjoy what you do!
That little part going into detail about potential issues and how to watch for them was my favorite thing of any video to date! Same with the comment about too-wet conditions causing seedlings to die off. Could you do a dedicated video just focusing on pictures of things to look for, what the problem is, and how to correct them? I find it to be a huge knowledge gap, personally, and that part was incredibly helpful!
Last year I showed a $5.00 packet of Lisianthus from Johnny’s. I was able to put 3 per cell in 18 cells. While all of the cells had germination, in the end there was only one sole survivor, that bloomed for me beautifully. I sowed the beginning of December and saw germination in 2 weeks. They grow so slowly you can never tell whether they are growing. However the roots are growing during that time. I planted them out around April first which was like a month before the last frost. They didn’t mind, however the temp never went below 23 degrees I made many different mistakes that eventually led to their death. Firstly, I am not good at remembering to water. The pots definitely dried out several times. One the leaves begin to wrinkle it’s beyond repair. I also sowed them in sterile soil with no nutrients, these were pots they stayed in for 5 months. When I planted them outside, 2 were dug up by rabbits and a third shriveled and died. The sole Lisianthus bloomed for me around august 1. It stayed colorful until around December 1. This is in 5b, WISCONSIN, by the way. It wasn’t bothered by high 20s frost. However I will not be doing it again! Haha
Aahhh you're killing me with seed starting lol I can't start yet. I have a cold frame. I have heat lamps in there that keep the temps above freezing. But too cool to germinate just yet. I wait until night temps stabilize to around 40° before starting seeds. So at least March before I can start. So yeah you're " killing me over here"😁
Oh Laura I'm so excited to see your Lisianthus grown this year! I'm motivated to get my seed studio cleaned up and organized to start some of my own! Thanks for sharing your tips and experience!
I'm adding a stop on my errand list today to get some seeds! I already posted on the buy nothing Facebook page a request for empty jugs. So slowly and on a much more modest scale, I'm looking forward to having pretty things in bloom too
One of the things I love about GA posting in "real time" (i.e. not with a few week editing delay) is that y'all give me a good idea of what I should be doing right now too. Thanks a mill for helping me stay on track with you! Random question - do you ever feel guilty thinning out your plants? I can't bring myself to do it, the seeds have overcome so much just to bring some green into the world. Cheers from Galway! 🍀
@Firefly I do feel guilty killing a living plant when thinning seedlings, dividing perennials, etc. Most of the time I cut them into tiny pieces so I don't see them trying to stay alive!!
@Firefly I do feel guilty killing a living plant when thinning seedlings, dividing perennials, etc. Most of the time I cut them into tiny pieces so I don't see them trying to stay alive!!
And by not thinning you’re hampering the growth of all of them, so none of them get to thrive. Nature is a lot more brutal than we are. It’s best not to anthropomorphize your plants. 😄
@@GardenKath I wasn't anthropomorphising my plants. I was talking about my feelings.. I just don't like killing them, or watching them die a slow death. I understand the need for thinning or pruning and I understand that nature is brutal. That doesn't mean I feel good about it when I harm living things myself
Oh I had no idea that there were spring blooming Lisianthus! Thanks for the great video. I'm starting mine this week for the first time. It's nice to have a primer. Hooray for flower season 2022!
The pictures of the flowers are beautiful. You do the seed starting with such ease. I so wish I had an area to start seeds. It’s so fun to watch you start them and care for them. Tfs.
After watching I ordered Lisianthus seeds. Hope they come quickly. I’m in zone 5 and should start in couple of weeks so fingers crossed they arrive in time.
You are going to love them. This year I am planting around 800 lisianthus. Last year I did 300. I hope they all do well. They do grow at snail past. 🐌 I have also grown the verbascum southern charm. They are also beautiful. I know they are supposed to be perennial but they are not strong on coming back for me. I have fewer plants each year.
At what point do you take the dome off, and when do you consider them large enough to move out? Mine germinated about a week ago, but are nearly too small to see. Literally--I had to use a phone microscope to be sure they had sprouted. Does the dome come off while they're still that tiny, or later? And how many leaves are enough to move out? Thanks :D I figured given your numbers, you have a good amount of experience, and this is my first time growing these.
@@annadawson5179 I will take the dome off after they have sprouted. Make sure you mist them each morning. You do not want to let them dry out. Once the first set of true leaves appear you will need to start giving them a weak fertilizer once a week. This will help them get some size before you plant them out. They can handle a little bit of cold but wait to plant them out after your last frost date. I plant mine once they are the size of a golf ball or bigger. Hope this helps. Sorry it took me so long to answer your question I did not see it until just now.

Good morning 🌅!
From North Texas 👋
Good morning everyone. We are expecting a few inches of snow here in Nebraska today and tonight and the wind is crazy. Planting seeds is so relaxing. Thank you for all of your help and advice, I really appreciate it with flowers. I'm good with veggies, but not so much with flowers.
Good Morning!
Thank you Laura, I'm so Excited for spring!!!
I was just looking at Lisianthus and was on the fence about trying to plant them! I just bought a couple of packets...you make me buy all the things! 😆 I also bought some cosmos and zinnias...and snapdragons. 🤣
You have the best equipment. So organized, and you make it look so easy!
This is my favorite flower. Can’t wait to see them bloom. Love your videos and start my mornings with you every day. Thank you for sharing your family with us. Much love to you all
Good evening 😊🤚🇵🇭 Russel is on top of the pot 😆🐈
Laura, I’m so excited I just bought my first haul of seeds from baker creek heirloom seeds. You have inspired me to try seeding and growing my own plants instead of buy them all full grown. This will be my first time sowing seeds and I’d have to admit im a bit nervous, but watching your videos about how to sow seeds has giving me a bit more confidence. Wish me luck and if I successfully grow them I’ll take a picture and tag garden answers on Facebook!! Love your channel and thank you so much for all the info you provide!!
the way this video ended really shows a gardeners nature. That “oh and one more thing” way about us 🤣 and of course we planted one more thing ♥️🤫✨
I'm in Ohio too.
You are such a breath of fresh air to everyone. Thank you for your channel.
Oooooh. I had no idea and have lived in North TX my entire life. Thanks!!
You help me keep my 88 straight it can get overwhelming and my yard is smaller than yours so You give me courage THANK YOU West Coast Canada I'm in snow too Chilliwack BC
Your enthusiasm is so contagious Laura! I learned about pelleted seeds today. Your videos are full of “ garden nuggets of wisdom.”
Happy new year love!
Thank you for keeping us winter busy " we need stuff to do till spring now. Yay " heated green house!!!
The landscape is fantastic snow-covered! Lisianthus are so beautiful! We never planted from seeds. Very informative!
Watching you fill the seed trays reminds me of the actions I do when I’m making Italian focaccia bread!
Wow! A wealth of information! You are always so comprehensive in a very tidy quick fashion; very easy to listen to!! Thank you!! 😋
I love these flowers since I have seen yours. They have that soft touch of looking like roses!
Timely video. I am all set to try these this year! Thank you!
The olive tree in the background - making me chuckle remembering you eating it straight off the tree!
These are so beautiful!! It looks like a cross between a poppy and a rose! I’m going to try to grow them myself!
I started the verbascum last year and did have a couple smaller blooms so waiting for this years show, like my holly hocks that were show stoppers last year. Its a nice gift after two yr wait.
I just love that you do all of this in all your beautiful jewelry. I do too!
Good morning ☕🌄 🙏 ☺
"A lot of excitement yet to be had" !! YES!!
Total agree with pre watering soil before hand.. so much better.
They didn’t mind, however the temp never went below 23 degrees
I made many different mistakes that eventually led to their death.
So slowly and on a much more modest scale, I'm looking forward to having pretty things in bloom too
Oooooo can't wait to see all those flowers. They looked gorgeous!
Such joy you bring to UA-cam! Loved learning about Lisianthus!
It's so much fun playing in the mud!! Your videos have really helped me with my gardening. Love seeing your cats helping you
One of the things I love about GA posting in "real time" (i.e. not with a few week editing delay) is that y'all give me a good idea of what I should be doing right now too.

Tfs.
Russel is magic! 😯 how did he disappear like that? I knew he was different. 😁
☮️💟
That apricot color one is really pretty! Can’t wait to see them grow!
I ordered mine today! I'm going to try them. I ordered three different verities. So excited!!!
Enjoyed nerding-out on all the technical information regarding fungus, root stress etc. Thanks for sharing a wealth of knowledge! 💚
After watching I ordered Lisianthus seeds. Hope they come quickly. I’m in zone 5 and should start in couple of weeks so fingers crossed they arrive in time.
Bravo for sticking with this unusual flower.
It’s exciting!! I hope we can see some of these when they’ve bloomed this year 🙏🏼😊♥️
A long-time favorite. Thank you!
Hi Laura, Could you do a follow up on these flowers. My only grew 2 inches in like 5 months!!!
Perfect timing, was thinking of seeding them today. Thanks for the tips as this is my first trial…
Thank you for this. I bought the same seeds from Johnny's and now I know how to get them growing
I have seeds sprouting underneath my grow lights! I’m so excited! Thank you for continuing to post. ❤️
Laura, your excitement is contagious so much fun...today seed shopping.
