I like to take an index card, fold it in half and then open it partially to make a “v” shape. Then I pour my tiny seeds into it. Then I take a lid from a ball point pen and use it to slightly scoot the seeds off the card into the cells. It works awesome! Great video thank you 😊. I have loved traditional snapdragons since I was a child trying to make them "snap". The little black beetles are known as pollen beetles in the UK, I get them on sweet peas a lot. There's nothing to treat them, but they don't harm plants or flowers. If shaking them off doesn't get rid of enough you can leave the cut flowers in water in a darker room near to a bright open window. The beetles are attracted to light so should leave the flowers. I love snapdragons and this is probably one of the only times in watching your videos that I am happy to be in zone 9B. Snapdragon seem to grow like weeds for me. They come back every year and they reseed them selves but I love that gigantic heat mat, I need one of those.

Laura, your seed starting videos have been useful in teaching my sweet students in my science lab the last couple weeks. I have talked about how I love “Ms. Laura’s” videos and have learned so much! We just planted our seeds this week of basil, coleus, and green beans in zone 10b. I am far from an expert gardener and new to seed starting. THANK YOU for inspiring me and teaching me tips that I can pass along to my little gardeners!
Laura, I have never seen anyone get excited over hand mixing their soil, what a joy watching you....lol GLORIOUS! You are definitely in your realm & it is contagious..I love the feel of soil in my hands under my nails, all over my knees. Ahhhh, the love of gardening. 🥰😍🌻🌼🌷🌱
I didn’t even know there was dwarf varieties of snapdragons. Thanks for the heads up - I’m growing full size for my small space and would rather have baby dragons. :)
I love snapdragons! Mine will reseed and come back again and again. Espoma link and site is AMAZING. They have a feature “where to buy”. I now know we have 1 location about 25 miles from me. Looks like they carry a lot of their products. I wish all sites had this option!!! Great job Espoma. I can get the potting soil and vermiculite now. Can’t wait to see those flowers!
I'm in Snapdragon heaven! I've never really paid any attention to snapdragons before last year. My husband (who is watching GA because of Aaron!) told me that they are his favorite. I was at a garden center and found some rockets that looked really sad and got them on a discount. With no hope - I planted them next to my house in a south face narrow bed a little fertilizer when I planted but really nothing after that. They took a bit but bounced back very nicely. So well in fact that on Dec 12th I still had blooms. I just couldn't make myself pull them and decide to leave them in hopes that they would maybe self seed for this year. A hard freeze finally came and killed them off and then the snow hit. Well - a couple months later the snow is gone and it's starting to get a little warmer. I was looking at the bed yesterday (timing is funny) and what do you know - new growth at the base of every plant! What!!!! Is this normal? Yakima WA zone 6B.
Even though it is blizzarding outside, I am getting my garden fix by watching Laura plant seeds, reading another section of The Layered Garden, and labeling plant stakes so that I can mark where new plants will go in my flower beds this spring.
You continue to give me and MANY others confidence and inspiration, now I totally love seed starting because of your awesome videos and great instruction.....and I love to share the seedlings in the spring! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!💗💗💗. AND you are wearing sandals- spring is coming!!!
Good morning Laura and family, I have to admit that I'm not a patient person when when it comes to seeds. But you make me want to try it out. Can't wait to see all the different colors. Have a great rest of the day.
I'm.in the UK and have used vermiculite on top for a while and fine vermiculite added to the potting mix for aeration and moisture retention. I've just started wetting my compost before putting it in the potting trays as you've shown, which normally here, we only water after seed sowing or sprinkle water on top just before. Absolutely brilliant, what a game changer....thank you, I will be wetting my compost first in future. Thank you
I put vermiculite on the top two years back and I ended up with a lot of moss. Last year I just mixed it in with my starting soil and it made all the difference.
Love that you are so real when making your videos! You include mistakes along with the victories. So much better than over the top and over done videos. Not to mention such helpful information with a sweet disposition! 😊 Plant on!
Some of my favourite videos that you make are your seed planting videos. I have a dream of owning a big property like yours and growing so many plants from seed one day so these videos send me off into a daydream about when that day arrives but for now my little yard and greenhouse will do! Thankyou for your constant inspiration ♡
Confession regarding Johnny's Seed... I too ❤️ all the info on the packets. I feel like they're putting their $ into producing amazing seeds instead of unnecessary high resolution marketing. But I'm not as familiar with flower varieties, so when my order comes in, I get my old catalogs and cut out the picture and paste it on the packet in a blank spot/over brand name. Not only a visual, but a fun (for me) winter, indoor activity that gets me really excited for spring! My husband thinks I'm a total garden nerd for this-he's not wrong and I'm not mad about it at all! Lol 😆
Last year was my first year growing cut flowers from seed and my snapdragons did by far the best. I had no idea what I was doing and there were WAY too many in each cell, but they did so good and will be getting a lot more space this year!
No matter what garden thing I decide to search, you have a video on it! You have done so much, it’s crazy. I love your videos and I appreciate all the time and effort you put into making these videos 💗
I purchased a seed warming mat last year and it is amazing how quickly and efficiently my seeds germinate! I do use the Hortonova grid on most of my cut flowers as I live on a hill that can get some crazy winds that can flatten my plants! It worked so well last year that I will continue to use it on all my tall cut flowers this year! I decided to add a few of your different bloom snapdragons this year! I used a mix of traditional last year but love the look of the Azalea style! Thank you for the inspiration! Enjoying starting new seeds, tubers, and bulbs each year that just expands the beauty of our gardens! ❤️
I am going to try snapdragons for the first time this year and I sure find a lot of differences in how to start the seeds. Some instructions say not to use heat mats because they like lower temperatures to germinate saying that heat will lower germination. I got mine from Harris seeds and on that seed packet it says to lower the night-time temperature during germination and when growing them on to keep them at 50 to 60 at night and 70 during the day. Other people recommend putting the pack of seeds in the refrigerator for a week. Johnny's is the only one that says they need light to germinate. Very confusing!
I always use a heat mat to germinate seeds. No issues. Ive had great luck using heat mat vs not using one, they seem to take forever. I remove the tray from the heat mat immediately after germination, also, I remove the dome as soon as a few seedlings pop up. I don't wait for every single cell to emerge. I always end up with a full seedling tray. Best of luck!!
@@lindameeks9711 I also always use heat mats since my house is heated only by a wood stove and can get cold during the night. I was referring to more than one source that say not to use heat mats for snapdragon seeds because heat will reduce germination rate. Evidently, snapdragons germinate better at cooler temperatures.
I was on the fence about splurging for some snapdragon seeds and then I watched this video….. and now i have some potomac berry blend headed my way. 😂🤣 Thank you for enabling me! Haha

I started snapdragons last year for the first time(WS in milk jugs) and they were gorgeous!! Already started some in my winter sowing jugs, and made sure to seed LOTS. Thank you for sharing today, I had no idea there was different groupings. Great info.

Thank you so much Laura ! I didn't know there were so many types of snapdragons. Now I know to get the types that bloom through the summer !! Thank you. Hello to all you fellow gardeners! Spring is just around d the corner.
I hadn't thought about snapdragons for years! I was in the garden area of Wal Mart in January and found 2 inch pots of them. Remembering a video of Laura growing them, I snapped some up. Planted them in a container with - wait for it - Heuchera! I had never seen or heard of Heuchera before this channel. Imagine my surprise when the tag also said "Coral Bells" - now that was a plant I knew about but never grew. Anyway, not sure which type my snapdragons are, just pleased that I am starting my Spring plantings. I am zone 9A (Northeast Florida) and we have highs in the 80s this week!
I have not tried a toothpick but I do use a slightly moistened white cotton swab for those tiny seeds. Just did that yesterday for pink dandelion seeds. Works perfect to pick them up with a bonus of being able to see the seeds laying on the white cotton tip.
I grew snapdragons last year and they were so easy!! And yes totally agree they give back so much. The Twinny dwarf ones were the last flowers showing and didn't even mind some snow!!

Good morning everyone 🌻 🌱🌱🦋💐☕🌅
Good morning my friend Yvencia, and wish you a happy gardeniiiiing!!!
I love snapdragons and this is probably one of the only times in watching your videos that I am happy to be in zone 9B. Snapdragon seem to grow like weeds for me. They come back every year and they reseed them selves but I love that gigantic heat mat, I need one of those.
I planted snapdragons last spring and I had flowers all season , I loved them . I will be planting them again this year as well .They are so pretty. I love looking at your rows of them I your flower garden 🪴🌸
I love snap dragons!! I remember them being my favorite flower when I was a little girl. 😊♥️🌱
Laura, I have never seen anyone get excited over hand mixing their soil, what a joy watching you....lol
GLORIOUS! You are definitely in your realm & it is contagious..I love the feel of soil in my hands under my nails, all over my knees. Ahhhh, the love of gardening. 🥰😍🌻🌼🌷🌱
I will seed mine next week. Great to learn so much about snapdragons plants. I usually grow dwarf ones because i don't have so much space.
Johnnys seeds is a great catalog. I use it in my Master Gardener classes when I’m sharing great information sources.
Love what you’re doing with you hair. You’re so beautiful!
Love your videos and garden inspiration. 🪴
Hi 👋 dear ,how are you doing?
I did the same thing planting the whole tray. Love that you keep it real. Thanks for your videos!
Even though it is blizzarding outside, I am getting my garden fix by watching Laura plant seeds, reading another section of The Layered Garden, and labeling plant stakes so that I can mark where new plants will go in my flower beds this spring.
Good morning! How wonderful for the ability to plant from seed. I wish I had more space to plant outside
Good morning Laura and family,
I have to admit that I'm not a patient person when when it comes to seeds. But you make me want to try it out. Can't wait to see all the different colors. Have a great rest of the day.
Oh I love snapdragons, I have pink and yellow in my garden currently. Even during Florida “winter” they’re still thriving! 😃
Good evening from Australia 🇦🇺
Good morning my friend DONNA, and wish you a happy gardeniiiiing!!!
Good morning, Laura ☕️. I wonder how long before those heat mats will be sold out? In 3,2,1… 😆 I see those gorgeous Hellebores! Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
I was wondering if those were hellebores! They look glorious!!
@@dawnmitchell11 Don’t they!? I just checked on mine out in the yard and I have new buds! 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Boston, zone 6
Love Snapdragons 🌼🌸! Had them blooming all summer long!
You can use that envolpe the seeds are in to tap them out when planting works pretty good. I have to ware magnifing glasses to plant them tiny seeds.
Have you ever winter sowed snapdragon?
Haha
Have been growing snapdragon for decades and never heard of group numbers!?! You never cease to amaze with your wisdom. I have looked inside and out of my snapdragon package and cannot find a group number. 😕. Time to check out Johnny's
I just watched Jenny ( Gardening with Creekside) and saw Laura was on too. 💚🌹💚 What a great morning! 💚🌹💚
You havew wonderful videos! Thank you. You are clear and enthusiastic and delightful!
Laura it looks like you need a sink or laundry tub in your greenhouse. Makes hand washing so much easier. 😊
My tip, I plug a surge protector into the temperature gauge of the heat mats. This allows me to plug several heat mats to one gauge. Thank you for all you do! I’m a zone below GA in 5b so I love that your zone 6 schedule gives me great lead time on planting projects. 🌸Happy gardening!
Really to the point information about planting this variety and super clear tips. Always enjoyed listening to your explanations and tips.
Living in a dry, warm, climate with deer snap dragons are my favorite go to flowers. I confess I generally rely on just the natural reseeding of mine, but maybe I'll give some thought to more planning and start some inside. Thank you for the inspiration. Laura makes me excited to start and plan my garden. I have always been a bit of a hibernator who never really got spring fever but you have started to turn me towards the light. 🥰🌱💐🌞😎
I started snapdragons last year for the first time(WS in milk jugs) and they were gorgeous!! They flowered until November(zone 3) which this year was a long fall but still flowering when we had a bit of snow after that.
Incredible how these flowers just keep blooming and are so gorgeous. Already started some in my winter sowing jugs, and made sure to seed LOTS.
Thank you for sharing today, I had no idea there was different groupings. Great info.
This video had me giggling so much! Your “woopsies” were adorable…. Thank you for another informative, and fun video!
Giggling too. "Oh crap"
Always watch you on Facebook and then turn around and watch on you tube because sometimes you add a little bit to one or the other. Love it!!! Keep on posting Laura you bless our days. Hugs from N.C..
I’ve grown snapdragons for years and ever knew there were groups! 🤦🏼♀️ Now I need to dig through my seeds to see which varieties are which! Thanks for teaching me something new! ❤️
Good morning from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸
I'm a retired florist and love Snaps.
I'm glad to hear there are snapdragons for our heat. I'm going to take your advice. Thanks from the South 💓👍💓
“Oh crap, I just dropped one”. I howled, I love your realness. Beautiful job, can’t wait to see these gorgeous plants. 😂
Me too!! ❤❤❤
I feel like I’m so behind on prepping this year. I just have to keep reminding myself, "you do not have a greenhouse, YET!” I just love watching these videos and taking notes. It’s like your favorite class in school. 🥰
I have two cucumber and tomatoes growing in a bottles made greenhouse, I saw someone doing it on You Tube so I give it a try and it works, I did the same yesterday with some melon seeds just have to wait to see if they germinate too, have to be clear plastic bottles

Thank you so much Laura ! I didn't know there were so many types of snapdragons. Now I know to get the types that bloom through the summer !! Thank you. Hello to all you fellow gardeners! Spring is just around d the corner.
only Laura can say "Glorious" while mixing soil with bare hands... reminds me of cooking shows mixing cake mixture. Lol love her..
These are one of my favorite flowers to cut and bring inside! Great vase life!
Good morning!
Good morning my friend FRASER'S GIRL, and wish you a happy gardeniiiiing!!!
Manhandling wet dirt while saying “Uhhh glorious!” Yep that’s Laura 😂💕🤍🌿🌱🌿
Bahahahahaha I read this right before she said it, bahahahahahaha
I have not tried a toothpick but I do use a slightly moistened white cotton swab for those tiny seeds. Just did that yesterday for pink dandelion seeds. Works perfect to pick them up with a bonus of being able to see the seeds laying on the white cotton tip.
I grew snapdragons last year and they were so easy!! And yes totally agree they give back so much. The Twinny dwarf ones were the last flowers showing and didn't even mind some snow!!
Thank you for your channel ~You could save a bundle on making your own soil 8:59
Potomac apple blossom is gorgeous!
Put the tiny seeds in a small dry syringe! You can push the seeds out slowly and where you want them. This was a game changer for me!
I’ve been following your channel and have been inspired, educated, motivated and most of all, “included”from your first “Hey guys. How’s it going?” I’m thrilled at what you and Aaron have been able to build both personally and professionally and appreciate that you’ve taken us along for the ride. My passion has been unleashed and my gardens are a testament to what I’ve learned from you and been inspired by you. I was hoping that as you move forward with an ever growing, ever evolving landscape, you would continue to guide those of us who are still gardening in small spaces without the benefit of cold frames or greenhouses so that we may continue to learn within the confines of our resources. Thank you for providing detail on the inside vs. greenhouse seed starting which gives me confidence with my humble seed starting setup. Thank you for all you do and especially for bringing us along on this journey to the point where we may comfortably call ourselves “gardeners”! 💚🌱💚
