Could I grow them inside in containers inside? My granddaughter is getting married the last weekend in July. I would like to grow her flowers in her bouquet. We are a zone 6.

@@nitamihlfeld9845 congrats for your granddaughter getting married in July. What a fun idea to grow her flowers, I think these are early season flowers. I think she said they bloom in May and June, so I'm guessing they'd be done by the heat of July. Perhaps look into another variety of if you think these would be done blooming by then. I'm sure there's some flowers you could grow for her

You are correct Pam and I bet there is a nest on the underside of that bench where she was sitting. They are very aggressive when you get near their nest.

Hi Laura- Beekeeper here- that girl is most certainly a young yellow jacket queen. (wasp) I'm sure your greenhouse is a cozy place for her to overwinter. Only the young queens survive after the nest dies in the fall. They slumber in a sheltered place and await spring- when they can rebuild a small paper nest (alone) lay eggs and then begin to build their empire. Her only job is to survive right now- looks like she woke at the wrong time. I found a black and white queen in my crawl space last week I accidentally awakened. Sad advice- but anytime you see one of these gals, take them out with your shoe. It will save a whole lot of stings in the late summer. Yes, they are pollinators and harmless for most of the season, until late summer/early fall when they become a real problem- for your family and also honeybees.

What a lovely and informative thing to write about the sting. I also felt she was very tough to just keep on the show going. Like Roosevelt when he was shot mid speech. I love how you speak about the young queens so endearing. Most people would see them as immediate enemy.
I feel like this is something that would make Aaron chuckle. A few years ago I looked up why we say “knock on wood”. I learned that when we say/do that we’re “summoning the spirit of the tree”. The first knock is for the favor and the second knock is to thank the spirit of the tree for the favor.
Wasp/yellow jacket. Look for the nest so the kids don’t get stung. Love the paper bag idea. I have used mesh bags and the forms catch on them. Thanks for the tips.
That looked like a wasp to me! Might want to check that structure and make sure no one is building a hive in there to take advantage of the extra temp control!

Ranunculus is one of my favorite flowers to design with. The many different colors, the lasting quality, and the elegance it brings to a cut flower arrangement. ♡ I have never grown my own, but you make it seem so easy that I may have to try. Sorry about your bee sting! Ouchie! I love that Cheddar came to your rescue and "took care" of it for you! Sweet boy. ♡ I noticed him over your shoulder, licking his chops and giving himself a bath afterward. Those kitties love their mama!♡
Think that might have been a wasp... might be a nest somewhere close. Bees are not that aggressive to sting for no reason. Love ranunculus.❤️❤️

Ranunculus were my mom's favorite flower but she couldn't have them (way back when) because winters in Virginia were too cold. When my parents moved to CA, it was the first thing she put in the backyard! She would be thrilled you were starting them inside. She started tuberous begonias inside every year like a ritual of Spring. Thanks for a wonderful memory of her -- love your videos, so upbeat and encouraging!
So exciting to get some growth started! I'll be getting started here soon but I'm trying not to start things too early again!

I can’t believe you’re talking about this particular flower! Yesterday I bought some pink ranunculus at the nursery in the town I’m moving into soon here in central Calif/zone 9a. I just wanted to see what’s in bloom in January. And then I couldn’t help myself and bought three plants that matched together nicely like Laura would do and bought a pot to put them in plus soil. But I still live in my apartment and I really don’t have any place to put it but I couldn’t help myself.

That was a yellow jacket, not a bee! It would be a good idea to check the area in and around the greenhouse for nests before the kids or cats play out there again. Yellow jackets can sting more than once!
That is a wasp not a bee. Hope your ok!? Check under those tables and behind that heater for the nest. That one looks young and there might be more hatching.

Ordered some Ranunculus corms the other day, this come at perfect time to remind me what to do with them. Taking down my Christmas decorations and thinking how about in just 10 months we will start to take them out for beginning of Advent 😅
Grew them for the first time last year. I can’t wait to get more in the ground this year. Your video was very informative.
Ranunculus are one of my favorites! Would love to see all of your raised beds full of them!! I actually remembered to put up some (small caterpillar) hoops last fall so I can get them out, protected earlier this spring. It will be an experiment since i have never been organized enough to remember to get the hoops in before the ground freezes! I usually plant my dahlias out as the ranunculus are slowing down, in the same bed. The tuber sprouts are short at first and as the weather warms the dahlias take off and the ranuncs go to sleep. My corms have had all summer to rest and energize and I pull them out once i have cut back my dahlias. Works as a space saver for me. So glad to see all the glorious color from previous years, make me want to pre sprout...must. be. patient!! 😛

In Oklahoma 7a, our spring gets hot so quickly we have to plant ours in late December typically 😅 excited to see this year’s display
I bought corms in Jan 22. Life happened & I never got them planted. While waiting for this year's order I decided to take a look at them. Like you said, they always look dead anyway. I decided to pre-sprout them & see what happens. No way to know for sure yet, but I have high hopes. They plumped up well. Thanks to your videos I'm a lot better at "let's see".

@@susanhorn3910 I started presprouting mine January 25th, potted them up a couple days later, let them grow under grow lights until I planted them into a patio raised garden bed on March 14th (it was a random warm week in the 40s and 50s which ended up being perfect timing). I kept the bed covered in plastic since we still had regular snow and freezing weather except on the occasional warm or sunny day. A few days it was extremely cold (in the teens) so I covered the plants in a bedsheet as a frost cloth, then covered the whole bed in plastic... anemones bloom first so I had my first anemones at the very beginning of May and my first ranunculus bloom May 10th. This year I am going to delay the presprout until February, because even though I had growlights on the plants, they still got quite leggy and they definitely did not enjoy being inside those first few months... they really put on leafy growth when you get them outside in the cool weather, so I'm going to have them inside less and see how they go. Both the ranunculus and anemones were done by end of May because our temps jumped from 50s-60s to 80s almost immediately and stayed there for the several following months..i definitely would have had more blooms if we had a proper spring! Im in central Illinois if that's helpful

Yeah it's currently raining and in the 40s here, which makes me feel like I can act like I'm in a warmer zone and get going on planting now..i just planted sweet peas in nursery containers and set them outside in a makeshift low tunnel I have... just an experiment to see how they go since it's so warm! I was thinking of doing the same with ranunculus to see if i can get earlier blooms with less effort. Ranunculus are so worth it, they are stunning as a cut flower! I got a 2 week vase life on most of them! Anemones too are so beautiful. They're all my favorites only second to dahlias!

As for Ranuculas, they are a big 0 for me. I soaked and planted 20 corms. 4 grew, only 1 bloomed. The ones in the ground never grew, planted late April. They don’t like 7a here.

I’m in the same zone and didn’t have great luck with them the past couple of years either, surprisingly. The ones that did grow got attacked by aphids, so I couldn’t cut and enjoy them 🤦🏽♀️

6a NJ here. I was gifted orange ranunculus for Christmas and planning to start them in the house before moving to greenhouse when weather is warmer. It’s my first time with this flower, but a friend told me she loves them so I want to gift her some plants for her porch pots in spring. I plan on putting all of mine in pots on the back porch for the spring/summer to be able to save bulbs (chickens don’t attach porch pots). 😊 Thank you for any advice! ❤
This will be my fourth year of growing ranunculus and anemones in zone 5a, southern Wisconsin. I begin the process of soaking in late February. After soaking, I put them in moistened soil in 50 or 72 cell packs. I put them in the basement for about 2 weeks until I see sprouts. I take the flats outside on the front porch, covering them as needed. If I can get into the ground mid March ( depends if the ground is frozen or not), I use the same tunnels as you used last year and cover. I love sharing the blooms and got a very nice thank you from our vet's office last year. They are definitely worth the work!

Crazy suggestion that really works for bee stings, I put a copper Penny on the site ASAP then cross with 2 bandages. 5 minutes later you will barely now you have been stung. Love, love, love your videos and social media posts. Thanks

I’ve had problems with slugs and snails for my ranunculus. I use Sluggo to control the snails.
Ouch I hate wasp stings. If you are standing by a table there is probably a nest under it. Here in East Texas we have what we call “Red wasp” and they dive bomb you even if you are walking away. I’m surprised it is out if your weather is cold…must be a warmer day. Oh warm in the greenhouse.

You were moving right along until the sting took you off course, for just a second, then remembered where you were. You are amazing. I would have come back the next day. LOL. This is how gardening goes. I have a back patio and my plants are containers. I bought Ranunculus last year and have the corms. So glad you did this video. I will be filling up my containers this year. Of to get sprouting containers for my garage. Thanks
I haven’t had much luck with them in Michigan-only about a third of mine bloom. I think we go from cold wet spring to summer too fast. Love seeing yours look so beautiful every year. 😊

I dug mine up last season, shook off the dirt and threw them under my potting bench. Completely forgot all about them. I brushed them off, soaked them and they're already sprouting. So much easier than overwintering Dahlias!
Hi Laura, I’m new to gardening since 2021 and learning so much from you. I love it! So satisfying to imagine a space, create and watch it grow. I’m in zine 9 this is my first time planting ranunculus bulbs. I planted in a area that gets full sun most of the day. I’m wondering now if I should of planted them in part sun part shade since we get so hot even in the early spring. Thoughts on that. Thank You
