Spearfishing NY: Stripers are back. April 28

April spearfishing. The small clouds can eclipse the sun. April 1st and 15th, no life underwater. The water still cold for this time of year.
April 28, I was looking for a blackfish or two. Season closes on April 30.
I saw several, but I was not sure if they were above 16 inches, the legal size. I had time, I passed.
Ended up in a school of striped bass. The legal size slot is 28 to 31 inches. Which is really hard to evaluate for someone spearfishing.
Many looked a bit too short. I saw a slightly larger one and I took the shot.
I thought it could have been short. But back to shore I measured it at 28 inch, barely.
One striper was enough. I have to descale it and clean it on the beach, and fillet it at home, as a whole striper is hard to fit in my fridge.
A blackfish I can cook whole in the oven, Much easier.
Anyway, one striper was enough. I forgot to look for the white lips on a blackfish. that indicates mature size.
The water was 12 C/54F it felt a bit warmer on my does than earlier in the month.
Visibility is also not so good, due for weeks of strong winds and choppy seas.
