November striper. Spearfishing New York.
The water is getting clear, as the temperature drops.
Spearfishing right before sunset, is the best time for me.
Fewer boats to worry about, more fish activity.
Two hours in the water, two shots, two fish.
I came upon a school of stripers before I reached the bottom. I took a quick shot and I was lucky. Diving on top of a school of fish always seems to spook them.
No time to pick the right fish. I had a lucky shot, and the striper was 30 inches long, within the legal 28 to 31 inch size slot.
For the blackfish, I got to the bottom, took my time. Too many small ones swam by. i looked around the rocks. I saw a larger one, with the distinctive white lips the adults have. Took a shot, the fish was stoned, the shaft all the way through like a needle, as it happened for the striper.
It was 18 inches long, 2 inches above the minimum size of 16.
Blackfish in New York can only be harvested in late fall and early spring, when the water are cooler, and not many larger ones are present like in the summer.
I attached the GoPro to my speargun with the standard screw, so the camera tilted forward for the recoil when I took the shot.
I should have looked for the high torque screw with wings.
But I was in a hurry to get in the water, as with some people we helped an older guy whose car got stuck in the sand. Probably an hour of work.
