- Foo Fighters interviews over the years (up through 2002). I cut out the videos - you know where you can watch them if you really want to see them.
Also, I have to give props to Dave for his great analogy on people asking him how Kurt's death made him feel. And I'll also give Taylor props for his analogy to changing guitarists every year...
Like him or hate them, daves story is remarkable. starting from the ground up after nirvana, now he has proved his worth and escaped the shadow of his former band.
I kind of have a crush on the young, long-haired Dave. Smexyy.
Shhhh we all do just a little
Me too
Same
How could you not? He was a cute boy.
I can't imagine what it would be like to constantly be asked about your friend who died a year ago by people you didn't even know
i admire the way dave provides consistent reminders of the fact he is an ordinary guy by reminding interviewers that he will not disclose personal information impertinent to the music. his disregard for meaningless aesthetic is a beautiful characteristic as well.
interviewer: "Does it hurt to talk about it?"
Dave: "Yeah, i mean... don't you think it would? Then why would you even ask?"
Just like he said, it's like a random stranger (like how every journalist is to anyone that they don't know) asking you about someone you care about who just passed and subsequently telling other random ass people about it...just have more respect for someone. If anything, journalism has gotten more intrusive than ever.
I respect him a lot. He and Krist have always maintained their dignity and respect towards Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. If he went around blabbing to the media about Kurt, he would just be another Courtney. If he didn't give a shit, he would exploit Kurt's life and death for personal gain but he's always kept it sacred.
Man he really did change, drastically it seems, in the old days didn't really seem to be comfortable doing interviews now pretty much owns them, when you see him back then as opposed to now it's like two different people even though the same guy, but i can relate, my mom died 2 yrs before kurt cobain killed himself , so i understand kinda where his head was at in that first interview, even though it was a year and half after it was still pretty fresh to him and was still trying to deal with it all, now it's easier to talk about it and he does, i do to, but like he said they were more interested at the time asking about kurt and nirvana that what he was doing with foo fighters like it was a btw thing
That was just the punk attitude. Those kind of musicians who came from underground music scenes weren't so comfortable with the media and that kind of stuff. Those guys were up there just to write music and play as loud as they could, not to talk too much or give interviews. Indeed, I guess that back in the day Dave kept in mind the way that the media had treated Nirvana and Kurt, so he didn't preserve so much love for them. Then I guess he just grew up and learned from the past mistakes and realized it's all a big game and you gotta take it as a joke if you don't wanna end up fucked up. If you think too much about it and take it serious we all know how can someone end up. If you just laugh at it and take it easy then I guess it's easier to cope with the media and the fame and all that shit.
"Don't you think it would? Then why would you even ask?"
He is so amazing, such an inspiration
That’s terrible journalists have to bring up difficult things for sensationalism. I’m proud the stance Dave has taken very respectful of what happened and at the same time distancing foo fighters from nirvana
he's hot.
He's Changed So Much, From Now...
@514tv I don't see "total jerk", but he was more guarded, but if you look at it from his perspective, journalists were poking and asking him about things he did not want to discuss publically. As he says in this video, it was nobody's business and he didn't want to discuss it. Completely understandable. Additionally, Dave wasn't used to doing interviews (or at least doing the talking), so this process was new to him. I do agree though - he certainly learned how to handle interviews later.
Man, all these years have passed. Dave is a legend.
he's so young
This is amazing. so many amazing clips
Thanks for uploading! I always look for your page for early Foo Fighters videos
Long hair Dave rocks haha! It's the NIRVANA/early FOO Dave :D
Dave is like the nicest guy and you can tell if he gets PO'ed with the interviewers that they have said something that has genuinely deeply offended him.
Give the guy a break. Im sure those few years after kurt died, ppl wanted to know Daves feelings more than wanting to know about his band. Im sure he got fed up with it.
Foo Fighters is a slang term for UFOs it was used in World War 2 over Europe by the Royal Air Force when they saw these things in the sky that were glowing balls and some people called them crop balls and other people called them foo balls and then some people started calling them foo fighters.
@ 3:18 totally 100% agree to dave!
lol in 0:55 he was really afraid to talkXD
i am very glad that Taylor was not on a 3 year lease!! :)
That's so awesome! People always wondered why I think songs being overdone, mega fast or difficult, doesn't make them a good song. Just how good the song is. Now I find out Dave Grohl agrees!
Songicly is good.
That's the good stuff.
agreed, but then again, dave naturally rocks, whether he has long hair or short ;P
4:47 this is the first time I heard Dave say he was the seventh drummer in Nirvana. I thought he was the fifth.
I didn't know Chris played in No Use For A Name
U learn something new everyday:)
you could tell he was still hurting a lot, he's right though it's none of their business
No, he joined in September 1997. Pat told the group he wanted to leave in May 1997, but stuck around until Franz was available in September, just in time for the MTV Video Awards pre-show gig.
@GuilhermeTB1 He was the sixth, actually. There's a list of them all on the nirvana wikipedia article.
he said people are losing the point of music back in 1999....id like hear his answer to that as of 2011
Wat or were can I find the interveiw with him talkin to the guy with curly hair and all the teens sittin around him?
"Does it hurt to talk about it at all?"
@maxipriest96 thanks :)
dave fetus, ahr
@loveislovepeaceis if you just type in "Dave Grohl Interview 1996" it should come up :)
He doesn't really come off as a jerk or anything.... just really awkward and kinda quiet
All My Life from One By One (or Greatest Hits)
Hope this helped :).
I thought that the first Much Music interview was horrible. Bill Welychka asked him questions that he knew that he wasn't going to answer. I'm thinking that at the time he was still trying to work things out after Kurt died.
No wonder he didn't do interviews. All they wanted to talk about was Nirvana and he didn't want to talk about it. :(
at 3:10 wow that was around the month i was born...but whatever Dave doesnt seem that old to me.
1:56 because of that awkward question this interview hard to find
7th?!
i didn't know that
@FreshAzImIz62 Also, if journalists just limited their questions to things that wouldn't upset their subjects, no one would ever learn anything interesting about anyone. If a subject doesn't want to answer a question-and he's a public person like Dave Grohl-it's important to ask it. Because even if he declines to answer, that refusal is interesting and noteworthy. Journalists can be compassionate, but they're not only supposed to be compassionate. They're also supposed to be mirrors.
What is the name of the first song on video?
All my life
What does Dave say from 2:00 to 2:06?
Please tell me,I can´t hear it.
the interviewer asked dave: “does it hurt to talk about it?” referring to kurt cobains death and dave says in response: “yeah. don’t you think it would? then why would you even ask?” :)
he said some things about his lyrics that were almost word for word what kurt said about his lyrics after in utero. in an interview where dave was right there with kurt. hhmmm.
That is logical. Dave learned how to write lyrics (and write songs in general) from Kurt.
That’s probably was his idol entirely lol
Thx
He´s so pissed off,but that understandable
It could have been. Hard to tell.
what song is in the beginning?
All My Life
@hakonvar
all my life
@FreshAzImIz62 I don't totally agree. It's not Grohl's job to really understand where the journalists are coming from. He sees himself as a normal guy. Unfortunately, he's not. He was Nirvana's drummer. If he agrees to an interview, it's basically the journalist's job to ask him whatever they think is most interesting - regardless of whether it makes him feel like shit. It's also very much his right to decline to answer. That's just how the exchange has to work though.
seems like hes taking the same point of view that cobain did, awesome in my book
Sounded like Pat Smear.
If you look back at some of the early interviews from when Dave was just starting out with the Foo Fighters, he usually came off as a total jerk. Over the years, he's learned to be more laid-back during interviews and take himself less seriously.
correction - 5th drummer of Nirvana
correction 6th drummer for nirvana
its kindad weird dave went straight for a new band as soon as kurt died...and went straight for front man...not asying thats bad or anything...i just thought about it...and i love his reaction to the interviewers
Come on dave, you were in the biggest and greates band of the world, and surely the journalist want to ask you about kurt, itsn not like, you are knowing them only about 5 min. NIRVANA was 6 Yreas around and the biggset band in the world.
Quit asking Dave questions about Nirvana!!!! Everytime you ask him about it, he has to relive it in his head!!!
ya ive always had that thought too. people try way too hard. like, for example...GNR. i mean, ya Slash is good at guitar but the music doesnt mean anything which is why, in my mind, it sucks.
What's funny about that?
